Waiting in line at 5:40 prior to 6:00 opening.

This will probably be my most difficult Hong Kong review. Expectations were sky high for La Vache, and for the most part those expectations were met, but there are several caveats. First off, my wife and I decided to go to La Vache two days after New Years. Hong Kong is very slow this time of year. A lot of expats are back home for the holidays and the SoHo area is about as dead as you'll ever see it. But even with all that, there was a line of people 25 deep 15 minutes before the restaurant opened at 6:00pm. Luckily, we jumped in line and got the last available table. So you don't need to read between the lines- this place is popular and extremely busy. The only reservations they accept are for parties of five or more, so you WILL wait to eat (and forget about waiting at the bar- all of those seats are occupied by diners as well). We noticed that you are rushed through dinner so they can get the next party in your seat. But the wait is completely worth it. You start with delicious French bread and a salad that whets your appetite nicely. Then they bring your steaks, which are are cooked to perfection, and the fries which are crispy and tasty. For a price of $278 per person, I also thought the value was great for such a popular place. Tango is still my favorite steak in HK, but if you can accept the wait and the rushed service, La Vache is a must try for steak lovers.

La Vache is pretty straight forward. No need to spend so much time figuring out what to order over a huge menu with so many options. During dinner, it's $288 for a set course that comes with a salad with walnuts, steak and "bottomless fries." They don't take reservations unless you have at least 5 or more people. This saved us plenty of wait time and we were able to score a table around 7:30pm from booking just the night before. It's not the best steak around but at $288, it's a good bang for your buck considering the setting and ambiance. They use USDA grade beef and the portions are decent. You'll probably get plenty of leftovers from friends to finish off if you've a big appetite like me. We all chose rare to medium rare. All the steaks come served on a single platter based on the how it's cooked so we practically shared everything easily (worked to my belly's advantage). The steak was quite tender and didn't really need any sauce to make it taste okay. The servers will make sure your plate is full of fries every few minutes. One can only consume so many fries in a single sitting but when you've got tasty protein combined with greasy carbs, your belly and taste buds will thank you for it. Grub out until your belly is content!

Had a great birthday dinner with my parents here last night! The reason of choosing this place is simple - there is not much choices on the menu, saving the old people a lot of headache in speaking English. Cos it's just steaks and fries here, all they need to say is medium / medium rare etc. Also save me the hassle translating menu ha ha. It's my second time here. I saw some couples and smaller table this time, which was not allowed as earlier bookings have to be at least 5 pax. Maybe they have laxed the requirement.... The chargrilled steaks were juicy and beefy. Since the steaks are all cut into strips, again make it convenient for my parents. And feels kinda local Chinese as the steaks can be easily shared across, so my parents are happy and enjoyed the atmosphere. The free refilled fries is addicting, cannot stop once started eating... Another great thing - they could write nice calligraphy! On request, they helped writing happy birthday on the strawberry tart we have ordered. Cheering up my dad a lot! Overall, it's a nice casual dinner with friendly staff and great service.

La Vache! is a restaurant locating at the SOHO area, if you are looking for some middle-ranged steakhouse with high quality, this is it. If u are a lazy person, your gonna love this place. There's only one item on the menu, that is their set course: salad, steak and fries. What u need to do is to tell them how well do you want your steak to be cooked. Fries are all you can eat, good news for big eaters haha, and what is more, they are garlic fries! What on earth is better than garlic fries! I can't stop eating.. they are crispy and golden! Nom nom.. Luckily me and my girlfriend still have room for desserts. We tried the two recommendations from the chef: Paris Brest and banana pie. They both are so good! Paris Brest is a little bit better than the banana pie :P So if u are too full, still order that single one to share.. You won't be disappointed :D

    Steak! Those fries though.

Service: Good! Very helpful despite all the demands my friend had. Food: Steak was a little bit chewy. Fries were super good! Sauce that went with it was verrrrrry good. I would almost return just for the fries. At the end of dinner there is a dessert cart that comes around with an array of options. Environment: They were mostly couples there. Lights are quite dim. I get the vibe of it being a date spot.

Walking into La Vache, I realised this was the former residence of Makumba (a dingy African bar with a band most weekends that served the best plantains in town). I was pleasantly surprised that La Vache has brought a totally different feel to the space. Considering it's technically the basement of the building with no windows, the restaurant felt bright and airy. The layout is open with a contemporary French decor. La Vache is part of the chôm chôm / chachawan group and is the latest craze of "trendy walk in dining". Fantastic for us, we were a party of five and able to reserve a table (La Vache allow reservations for tables of five or more). Now, I'm on some crazy protein fuelled / no oil / no carbs / no alcohol (no fun) kind of diet and I was delighted to opt for a steak frites place. Funnily enough, I ordered a steak (medium rare) and happily chowed down on their house salad (which they kindly served me without the dressing). The steak was delicious. Perfectly cooked, not too fatty and hit the spot. I can only tell you that the fries are great by the reaction of one of my pals who popped one in her mouth with a "mmm" and closed eyes (followed quickly by a sorry Lizzie). My favourite part of the evening (aside from scintillating table conversation) was watching the pudding "tray" come wheeling by. Now, by tray - it's more a cart stacked full to the brim of cakes and tarts. From fresh cream cakes to coffee tarts it was a treat to see. The servers also make up each sweet plate at your table, topping it off with fruit garnish. Although I can't comment on whether they lived up to the expectation, it was a joyful moment to help select the sweets. My only complaints are that they amped up the music half way through our meal (our booking was at 7:45) which made it a bit hard for us oldies to continue our group catch ups. Secondly, we ordered coffee with cake - the cakes came before the coffees, which also came out one by one. Perhaps they're not used to coffee drinkers as opposed to wine drinkers, but it meant our timing was off to finish dinner at the same time. On the whole - yes, I would totally go back. I love the ambiance, but in a smaller group so we can hear each other better and I'd be prepared to wait. Très Bon!

Wow! Super surprised there is a yelp entry for this restaurant!…read more This place I feel is not in the most ideal area. Personally, I don't like coming to LKF to have dinner or lunch or whatever. Still, I can't fault them too much for the location, and many people have actually done the same since there are a number of good restaurants in LKF area. This place is primarily a steak place, though they have a few other things to choose from as well. I believe lunch times they offer a AYCE sort of option, where you get a main and then the salad bar is buffet. I've been to it before and it's pretty good. I've heard however since COVID they have changed it somewhat. The other night I came and got the seafood guazzetto, which is about $300 HKD, and has a bunch of different things such as fish, octopus, clams, etc. Lots of seafood essentially. Other things I tried included the sides of brussel sprouts, mushrooms, bruschetta, some of my brother's sirloin steak, some of the fish of the day (halibut?). Overall, the food is quite nice. I will say, they tend to use a bit too much butter/oil here. I know this is kind of true whenever you eat out, but here it is definitely noticeable. I would recommend them to tone it down just a little bit, since there are always ways to spice up your dish without going overboard on the fats

They also brought out some veggies and dip before we ordered (which I had never seen done before) along with bread. The highlight of the night was the steaks of course. We shared the florentina (aka the porterhouse. A 32oz wagyu beast) and a filet. The meats came on a cutting board already cut, so the sharing was easy. They were perfectly seasoned, tender, and flavorful. We had roasted veggies and creamed spinach as sides. The latter was addictive! Chef Todd was around to explain their meat selection when I walked around to check them out in the case. We didn't get to send our regards to him, as we stayed late and were the last to leave. Todd, if you're reading this, hail to the chef! We went without a reservation and were seated right away. It was a Thursday night, but we had gotten there around 9 which might explain the vacancy. It's a great option for groups and celebratory dinners :)

A few places I've been in Asia usually aren't willing to cook a steak or anything else for that matter, than medium. While I was afraid that it would be the case here I was glad to hear my call for medium rare, then just 'rare' was taken without a blink. The steak was cooked perfectly, tender, moist and even though they brought out a few sauces but honestly they're not needed. While steak is obviously the centerpiece of a good steak house, the sides shouldn't be neglected. The creamed spinach was really good. I'd definitely recommend it and I usually don't like creamed vegetables.

But, this is Argentinean steak, so we're experiencing something imported and exotic! I learned that this isn't really in reference to the way it's cooked, but actual pieces of meat from Argentina. So was it as exciting and mind-blowing as one might think? Well...nope. Gaucho is a fancy Argentinian steakhouse located in the fancy expat-y part of Central. So of course, that comes with fancy prices. During Restaurant Week, they had a prix-fixe lunch menu for about HKD $200. Glasses of wine were available for an extra $60. The choices weren't bad, you get appetizer, entree, and dessert with free iced tea. Each course comes with 3 options, with 1 being an upgrade for a certain price. 1) Appetizer: I chose the Provolone and Onion Empanada. Pretty tasty start! The cheese was nice and gooey and spilled out of the single empanada. The pastry was flaky and warm. 2) Entree: The entree is what we looked forward to the most: Argentinian steak. I was the only one that stuck with the default 150g sirloin, my co-workers upgraded to the 180g rib eye for $50. Verdict? We were all slightly disappointed. The piece of meat was tender and juicy for sure, and a perfect medium rare. But...there was no fire. But that I mean, there wasn't any of that nice char I associate with a well-grilled steak, no distinct flavours. It was a beautiful piece of meat, but it just wasn't as tasty or memorable as I thought it'd be. 3) Dessert: Well things just went downhill and crashed with dessert. I just don't think it's Gaucho's forte. Some of us got the caramel creme brulee (extra $10), some got the rice pudding. Both were far too sweet. The third option was fruit, which might have been the best option. Overall, the meal was fine, especially for Restaurant Week. The service was great, as expected of a high end restaurant. I left on a full stomach but not a wow'd stomach. Maybe next time, Argentina, I will experience the full beauty that your cows have to offer. (63/100) - 2017

I had nothing to celebrate this time but I just hadn't been to one for a long time. I initially booked for another one, but then realized Gaucho had just opened and didn't think about it twice. I called but got the answering machine, then emailed but no answer. That was in the morning...so decided to give it another go in the afternoon and I finally got through someone at the restaurant and made a reservation for 7pm. I had been to two of the outlets in London when I used to live there and it was an experience every time. So, I was really excited about this opening! When we got there by 7pm there was barely anyone around. The space is very 'Gaucho' style...modern, stylish, dark (really dark), fancy (the music was great by the way!). But yeah, let's just get to the point: the steaks, mmmm. I ordered the 'Ancho' (rib eye) medallions (225 grams - 298 HKD) and a side of broccoli (68 HKD). My boyfriend got the 'Churrasco de Chorizo' (sirloin), that he ordered rear (300 grams - 318 HKD) and a side of sweet potato mash. They first serve some bread with butter and chimichurri. So good! And they bring the different cuts on a wooden board to explain where each of them come from (they usually ask if you're vegetarian too...). When the food came there was silence in the table between the two of us almost until the end of the meal. Yeah, it lived up to my expectations. It was just great. The service was also really good, although you can tell there's a little bit of work to be done since it's just been opened. Our waitress was super sweet and attentive and she did a great job explaining everything to us. I'd just wish the staff didn't push us to have some drinks. One of the reasons why I picked Gaucho yesterday night over other options in the city was the fame it carries and the price being slightly cheaper. So I can only conclude, amazing value for money: great location, excellent food, good service...gosh I cannot wait until the next one!!

It's one of my favourite streets in Hong Kong to explore with its shady trees and eclectic cred. Basically, I was already in a happy mood and I walked into the most gorgeous restaurant with a cool atmosphere. If you're like me, and have a thing for all things kookie, you'll love the tiles to the hand drawn artwork on the walls to the toilet doors. I made my way upstairs, thinking my pal would already be there, he wasn't ... But the waiter was... And he spoke wiz ze French accent. *heart melt*. I adore an accent, and it just made me appreciate the restaurant even more as it offers French cuisine by French people. Hells yes. I was really after eggs today, and boy was there a selection. I opted for the poached egg with wild asparagus and Parma ham. Bon oeuf, they were spectacular. The eggs were perfectly runny, maybe even verging on scrambled yet poached (we have coined the phrase scroached) with a salty flavour from the Parma ham that hit every tastebud and sent it tingling. The asparagus was fresh and crunchy, adding another layer to the dish. Served alongside the meal is a basket of the bread baked fresh in the kitchen with a dob of salted butter that is out of this world. I mean, butter is butter right... Sadly the server didn't know, but I think it's a ruse to keep us going back (although I was offered some for takeaway). Finally, I have to make mention of my ice latte.
