Somehow only just made it to Botanas for my first time. A few friends and I were craving good Mexican food and this place seemed like the right pick - it was! To my surprise, this restaurant is massive. As you walk in, you'll find a good size bar along the left size, two huge dining rooms on the right, and it also stretches so far back into yet more dining space. Despite this, there was still a 30 minute wait for a table! Clearly people love it here. While we waited, we ordered a few margaritas from the bar. I must say they were really good! I'm always weary about margs because so often they're made with an icky, too-sugary mix, but they get them right here. No shortage on chips and salsa once you're seated. That probably could have been my whole meal, but I shared a taco plate with my husband and loved everything that came with it. Can't go wrong with a rice, refied beans, taco combo. Overall really enjoyed it here! Wouldn't say it's high end by any means, and it's maybe even a bit outdated, but great eats nonetheless. read more

Food was ok. Guacamole was very good and lunch specials were tasty. However, we were charged $2.00 for about a tablespoon of diced white onion that I requested for my enchilada! The irony of it is the waitress forgot to bring the onion that I requested when I ordered it. After I asked a second time for the onion she brought it after I was halfway through lunch AND then I was charged $2.00 for about one tablespoon of diced onion. Very disappointing! read more

It took about 30 mins after being seated to get a drink order in, but the margarita pitcher was strong af, and everyone was happy, Getting green chile cheese enchiladas was a risk, and so so so much cheese, but I managed to finish half of one and was stuffed! Chimi combo was perfect, the big chimi was delicious. Had 2 orders of mexican tacos with steak. I will say we spend a lot of time in Arizona and hit food trucks south of Tuscon. This food was amazing. Lived in MKE 25 years ago and my go to Mexican spot is now long gone. Looked to Reddit for recs and landed at Botanas. I had the vegetarian special, which consisted of a chile relleno and a chile espanol--both amazing, GIANT, and tha relleno was the best I have ever had anywhere. My daughter had the Mexican tacos, also excellent, with tender (not chewy or fatty) steak. The house salsa is delicious, and just a touch kicky. The place is huge inside, with different rooms everywhere. The chips are warm and homemade. The salsa is delicious with a mild kick. The steak is good but not the best. Entering their designated parking lot, I asked where to park, park attendant just grunted and pointed towards the other cars. Arriving on a football weeknight with the Packers, I was impressed at the number of Packer fans watching the game at the bar. There are two sections, a bar side and the restaurant side. I choose the restaurant side, requesting a table with a view of the game. The clientele was mix of family and middle age couples although the bar side seemed younger. The menu was typical Mexican with emphasis on margaritas. I ordered the bistec ranchero which was a large portion. The steak quality was mediocre and cut up in pieces (I prefer Mexican steak dishes with the steak cooked as a whole piece). If you are looking for authentic Mexican fare, this is not it. I had a minor request for this dish but it was not followed by the cooking staff. The server never checked up on my order or asked if I want another drink. It was semi busy but I saw her chatting up the hostess several times. Going back to my car, the park attendant started waving his hand asking for the ticket he gave me earlier. At least, have the courtesy to say good night or hope you come back again. Suffice to say, I will not be coming back especially with all the other Mexican options available. read more

Botanas serves up solid Mexican eats, has above and beyond wonderful service, and a pretty kickin' patio to boot. Was in the mood for Mexican and wanted to try something new, so came to Botanas. Nestled in Walker's Point, this spot is so much more than it appears from the storefront. First of all, they actually have a really large space (looks small from the front)! They told us that they could seat us immediately outside but it would be a bit of a wait for indoor dining (they're pretty popular). I had noticed some sidewalk tables out front, so when they said they could seat us outdoors, I immediately began walking back out the front door. My error! They actually have a lovely, secluded patio out back. We were seated and our drink order immediately taken. My dining companion and I both wanted Don Julio margaritas. We blinked and our margaritas were placed on the table as well as tortilla chips and salsa. They took our dinner order and less than 5 minutes later, steaming plates of food were at the table. The service is spot on and seriously swift. I ordered their chorizo quesadilla. It was packed with chorizo and not overly cheesy (definitely more meat than cheese). It was good! The margaritas were lovely (plastic cups for outdoor diners) and the guacamole was some of the best guacamole we've enjoyed in Milwaukee (definitely get the chunky, worth the bit of extra cost) . I feel like this would be a great spot to dine with a group since they're service is so quick and really dialed in. I'm definitely planning on more evenings on their patio this summer. Had not even been here before the pandemic. There's lots of space inside so I imagine it could have gotten pretty busy in the old days. But that also means it's ideal for social-distanced dining. There's usually a decent-sized crowd by "new-normal" standards but the employees and customers respect one another's space. I'm a fan of the combo plates and the chicken mole is good. The salsa is decent, the rice and beans are adequate if not anything to write home about in particular. The portions are generous. I try not to waste food and I've left feeling full whenever I visited. The service has always been pleasant. They take care of your needs but don't hover. That's always what I look for, but given the circumstances I think they're doing a great job. It will be interesting to come back when things are more normal and festive. My family & I always love the service & food. We have been to Botanas so many times & always try to come back when we have taste for Mexican. When you are seated you get free chips & salsa & water right away which is great. Then a few minutes later the server comes over to take your drink orders. Our only suggestion will be for all servers to know that the alcoholic's drinks comes w/ sugar & salt by request only. We have tried the beef big chimichanga, steak big chimichanga, combination platter w/ mini chimichanga, enchilada, taco, corn tortilla's steak tacos & beef flour taco's which all comes w/ beans & rice. The drinks are delicious & can not wait until they start back selling pitchers instead of single drinks only. Our only suggestions will be to make sure the shrimp is fresh & cleaned properly because we ordered the shrimp taco's before & had a very fishy smell. My boss recommended I try Botanas and I was definitely not disappointed. The wait was a little bit long, but that was understandable on a Friday night and even more understandable after trying the food. Unfortunately, it was raining, so the patio wasn't open, which I think contributed a little bit to the wait. All of the food was really great and authentic. There were tons of different options and the food came out very quickly! We both got margaritas - strawberry and traditional. The strawberry was my favorite and was definitely not as strong as the other one, which I preferred. Our meals were definitely filling, as there were plenty of sides included on the plate. The chips and salsa were included and the chips were great and didn't break whenever you dipped them, which is not something you always see.
