Went back here for a group dinner and tried the shrimp ceviche appetizer and the steak chiles which was a huge meal so shared with my group. I tried the mango daquiri and piña colada that had me laughing throughout dinner and enjoyed the rest of my food and company. Nachos Supreme was a good start. The staff were very friendly and prompt. Went there many times with a friend. My friend tries various combos and enjoys them. I do like Fish Tacos. Somehow only just made it to Botanas for my first time. A few friends and I were craving good Mexican food and this place seemed like the right pick - it was! To my surprise, this restaurant is massive. As you walk in, you'll find a good size bar along the left size, two huge dining rooms on the right, and it also stretches so far back into yet more dining space. Despite this, there was still a 30 minute wait for a table! Clearly people love it here. While we waited, we ordered a few margaritas from the bar. I must say they were really good! I'm always weary about margs because so often they're made with an icky, too-sugary mix, but they get them right here. No shortage on chips and salsa once you're seated. That probably could have been my whole meal, but I shared a taco plate with my husband and loved everything that came with it. Can't go wrong with a rice, refied beans, taco combo. Overall really enjoyed it here! Wouldn't say it's high end by any means, and it's maybe even a bit outdated, but great eats nonetheless. read more

Once I find something I like it's hard for me to try it at another restaurant. That is the case here. A couple summers ago , we went on a quest to find the best fajitas and Botanas came out up on top. My wife and I always order a single order of steak fajitas well done. In my opinion , a single order is enough for two people. The service here is excellent. Bartenders always recognize me when I walk in and greet me with a handshake. When I don't eat at the bar table service is always very efficient and polite. The chips and salsa are solid. I never leave here without also ordering the fried ice cream. It's not chi chis but it's darn good. This place is always genuinely crowded but still runs efficiently. Love the tropical theme of the inside. Food was ok. Guacamole was very good and lunch specials were tasty. However, we were charged $2.00 for about a tablespoon of diced white onion that I requested for my enchilada! The irony of it is the waitress forgot to bring the onion that I requested when I ordered it. Quick and friendly service. Chips and water came out asap when we sat. I am kicking myself for not getting food pictures but the food was so dang good and plentiful! Chimi combo was perfect, the big chimi was delicious. Had 2 orders of mexican tacos with steak. I will say we spend a lot of time in Arizona and hit food trucks south of Tuscon. This food was amazing. Lived in MKE 25 years ago and my go to Mexican spot is now long gone. Looked to Reddit for recs and landed at Botanas. I had the vegetarian special, which consisted of a chile relleno and a chile espanol--both amazing, GIANT, and tha relleno was the best I have ever had anywhere. My daughter had the Mexican tacos, also excellent, with tender (not chewy or fatty) steak. The house salsa is delicious, and just a touch kicky. Came for my wife birthday lunch. Service is really fast. So plan place your orders at the right times otherwise you will get all your food at the same time. The place is huge inside, with different rooms everywhere. The chips are warm and homemade. The salsa is delicious with a mild kick. The steak is good but not the best. Botanas serves up solid Mexican eats, has above and beyond wonderful service, and a pretty kickin' patio to boot. Was in the mood for Mexican and wanted to try something new, so came to Botanas. Nestled in Walker's Point, this spot is so much more than it appears from the storefront. First of all, they actually have a really large space (looks small from the front)! They told us that they could seat us immediately outside but it would be a bit of a wait for indoor dining (they're pretty popular). I had noticed some sidewalk tables out front, so when they said they could seat us outdoors, I immediately began walking back out the front door. My error! They actually have a lovely, secluded patio out back. We were seated and our drink order immediately taken. My dining companion and I both wanted Don Julio margaritas. We blinked and our margaritas were placed on the table as well as tortilla chips and salsa. They took our dinner order and less than 5 minutes later, steaming plates of food were at the table. The service is spot on and seriously swift. I ordered their chorizo quesadilla. It was packed with chorizo and not overly cheesy (definitely more meat than cheese). It was good! The margaritas were lovely (plastic cups for outdoor diners) and the guacamole was some of the best guacamole we've enjoyed in Milwaukee (definitely get the chunky, worth the bit of extra cost) . I feel like this would be a great spot to dine with a group since they're service is so quick and really dialed in. I'm definitely planning on more evenings on their patio this summer.
