Potential new customers should be aware that Boston Solar customer service is deteriorating fast. They seem to be focusing on new business while ignoring the needs of existing customers. I had an electrical service upgrade at my house about four weeks ago. To this end, my solar system had to be disconnected. Unbeknownst to me, Boston Solar was needed to reconnect the system to preserve product warranty, a very simple procedure. I called them right away to request their service, only to be told I should have let them known way ahead of time that I was going to need their help. Never did they alert me back when they installed my system over 5 years ago that their help would be needed for this. I have since contacted their service department numerous times, to no avail. They don't even have the courtesy return my call to set up an appointment. It's been almost 4 weeks now, and I'm completely in a bind. Customer beware! read more

We hired Boston Solar to install solar panels on our home last year. Like others have stated, the sales process is fantastic. Unfortunately, that's where the fantastic service ends. We had random men saying they were from Boston Solar showing up at our house asking other workmen who were there to be let in (we weren't home and had nothing scheduled with BS). When I called Boston Solar, they told me it wasn't their tech... then they called me back 10 minutes later and said it was... There were several other items that were just a complete sh*tshow, like the final inspection, which took several MONTHS past the time we were paid in full. Oh, and Stefan from Boston Solar made it pretty clear that passing inspection doesn't matter to them. When they finish the install, not pass inspection, is when your money is due. All-in-all I spent way more $$$ with Boston Solar expecting a premium experience, and they failed spectacularly. Would not recommend. read more

Boston Solar has a great presentation and are extremely knowledgeable. However, they are by far the most expensive and I don't see the added value in their inflated prices. They pride themselves on customer service yet, price gouge more than the other 4 companies I met with. The rep I worked with also belittled other companies in an unprofessional manner saying the other quotes received were laughable. They also say they offer a Veteran discount but it can't be applied to any other discounts so essentially the answer is no... they do not provide a Veteran discount. I was hoping to move forward with them but unfortunately was extremely disappointed. I highly advice others to shop around so you don't end up paying thousands too much. read more

I just had Boston Solar install panels on my house. This company does a good job of setting expectations and communicating throughout the entire process. The job included an upgrade of my electrical, structural support, installation of the panels and was capped off with a guy who walked me through use of the portal at the end. i was getting estimates from several other national and local companies for my solar panels. Boston solar was the last ones i talked to. they quoted me 4k under the price of the cheapest competitor. they took a while to get the paperwork done... maybe 2months, the state had some tax credit paperwork that had to get approved first... once all that was done, they called me and scheduled it within a week of the approvals. the guys showed up on time at 8o'clock, got the project done in 6 hours. guys were friendly, and communicated well. 45 days after turning on the system, the electric company owes me 475 kwh, which I'm banking for the winter when the days are shorter. definite recommend them! read more

I signed contract to let Boston solar install solar panels for my house in the beginning of May 2022 after talking with the sale person who was pretty honest and provided my a lot of useful info. The whole process was smooth in general, though every step took a few weeks in the approval process, Boston solar could start the next step right after passing the current step. They finally got the permit and installed the panels in late July 2022. However, there was one panel which does not work after the installation and they just started to operate it after getting approval from the electricity company. It took another month or so for me to communicate with the project manager back and forth. The problem finally got resolved after they replaced the micro-inverter for that panel. read more

He answered all my questions and took my concerns about taking down trees into consideration and we came to a final plan that worked for me and the predicted solar production. We had Boston Solar install panels this past fall. The people who work for the company take pride in what they do. A representative assigned to our specific case has been very helpful in explaining situations and answering specific questions that I have had along the way. If you have Mali, she is quite helpful in explaining the solar process. We had Boston Solar contract out our roof to be done before doing solar. We received a good price, and the quality of the roof is excellent. The installation of the solar panels was also done very well. In terms of price, we contacted several companies and found that Boston Solar was the best option that also had high customer reviews. The pricing stage was a bit intimidating because you have to also look at the quality of the panel that you are ordering when comparing companies. The satisfactory reviews were important to us, considering this is our first time getting solar in any way. Above all else, I like how this company gives a straight answer and tries to communicate with customers as openly and directly as possible. This helps with people who are not necessarily "tech" people and need some help understanding what is going on with their roof, panels, electricity, meters, the electric bill, etc. If we were to ever have to put solar on a house in the future, our first call would be to Boston Solar. read more

I have had the system for about 4 years. Never really had good communication from Boston Solar. Have had many issues with system and all have been installation related. I can not get Boston Solar to respond to any of my calls, emails (at least not timely - right now have been waiting for 2 weeks for a call back due to a fault on inverter). No one answers phone when I call. Leave message but still no call back. Over the last year, I have had to teach myself all about the system and developed a relationship with actual manufacturer of equipment to resolve multiple issues. When finally got to root cause, I was so disappointed in Boston Solar because all the issues were all a result of poor installation. Essentially I am doing Boston Solar's job by troubleshooting and repairing the system. I am technically capable of working with manufacturer and understanding the system, but I do not think the average consumer would 1) be able or 2) have the patience to do what I am doing. When Boston Solar shows up, its typically unexpected (no call or email just giving a heads up) and the people showing up have no idea why they are there. Through very simple questions, it quickly becomes apparent that I know way more about the system than they do - even basic electrical knowledge. So disappointing. They might offer a great price, but when something goes wrong, it will take a long time to resolve and will take multiple visits (each visit creates new issues). If you have some technical knowledge and ability, you may survive (although I suspect will get very frustrated). If you have limited technical knowledge, I suspect you will find that you spent thousands of dollars on a system that is not producing any energy for periods of time. Not a very sound financial outlook. Their website says they are the best in the Boston area. If this is true, I would not go solar at all. I doubt this is true thought. I have neighbors that have experienced 0 issues with their solar. Shop around, check others out. read more

I was researching Solar Power for a long time and eventually stumbled on reviews of Boston Solar, I was happy with what I saw and I booked an appointment. I also booked appointments with other companies in the past and was not satisfied with them, however, with Boston Solar, everybody was straight forward, no scare tactics such as other companies tried to use on me. They took my power bills and drew up estimates based on them. The estimates looked very good so I went ahead and had the system installed. Now that the system is installed, I am very, very happy with them! I produce more energy on average than I use every day. Even on some partially cloudy days, production is more than usage, and it is winter! So my production should be 2/3's more during the summer. The quality of the install was very very good, being in IT, I like to be neat and clean with wire management, and these guys, while installing the Solar System and installing my new home power panel, did a very neat job. It actually looks really good on my house too! I literally have no complaints, they were quick, built the system very quick, and answered all my questions. After doing my research and talking with Josh, we decided to move forward with Boston Solar even though I had lower quotes from 3 other companies. Thanks to Josh, Mali, and the rest of the Boston Solar team! The process was super informative and stress free from the initial meeting with Josh to the install of the system to going live. The only 2 issues we ran into was Mother Nature being uncooperative and so many people signing on with Boston Solar which pushed our original install date back by about 6 weeks. So far our electric bills have been about 1/3 the norm. Can't wait to see how the rate of return is over the long haul. This is the first year that I am actually looking forward to filing my taxes so I can recover the additional 30% federal incentive to finish paying off our solar loan. Big shout out to the other solar company who came knocking on our door to get us thinking about going solar. The process was pretty straightforward. I met with my sales rep for an in home consult in July and by September, everything was installed and up and running. They do a great job of communicating everything to you throughout the process via phone,emails etc. so you are always in the loop. I had some concerns with placement and they were able to schedule a tech to come down to my home and meet with me for a walk through prior to install which was helpful in easing my mind. Negative/Zero Stars for Customer service 4 Stars for Installation I have never received such terrible customer service from a business and they don't care. Here are the details: 1. Signed contract in May - 75 days to complete 2. Panels installed in August - 96 days after contract signing, what are the legal implications of this? 3. During installation, some marketing yee-haws from a branch of BS in CT filmed the install using a drone. They didn't really know what they were doing as the drone ran out of power and hit my house. I heard it and I have two separate witnesses that saw it. No apology from marketing group, no knock on the door telling me what happened. Can someone say incompetent? BS customer service apologized, but questioned whether it happened because I didn't see it - nice, I thought the customer was always right!?! 4. Installation wiring mistake held up inspection approval for 2 months. BS knowing inspectors are dolts and drag things out should make them super careful about installation. 5. Started going through paperwork noticing lots of mistakes on the permit, applications for the SREC, etc. The SREC mistakes and non-submittal of paperwork have held up approval of my SREC application - not sure I will get credit for power produced since Dec. 6. I have asked multiple times for manuals for the items installed. Some you can get online, but some companies say you have to get them from the installer. I need them in case BS goes out of business, which judging from the way I was treated isn't so far fetched. 7. I received a forwarded email from my salesperson where a previous negative comment about me was included, use email much!?! = poor professionalism. 8. Still haven't received my rebate from State of Massachusetts, probably due to some as yet unknown BS application screw-up. There are probably other things I missed. Any new screw-ups that come to light in the future, I'll be sure to update my review. read more

We got a free energy assessment from Next Step Living and had a representative recommend that we install ductless mini splits. Boston Solar installed the mini split system and it was a disaster from the get go. The condenser has had issues every season since being installed. Every summer it does not cool, every winter it does not heat. We had to call Next Step Living and/or Boston Solar to service the unit over and over. The Winter rolled around and the units were blinking but not blowing any air. Checked the condenser and the fan was not operating not even spinning. We reset the system - nothing. The warranty from Boston Solar is up and we are stuck with a non-operating mini split system. This is the kicker - Boston Solar never registered our product so when we went to Fujitsu for warranty info, they had no record of our products. read more

We were skeptical. We wanted the panels on the back of the house only, and weren't sure we got enough sun to make it worthwhile. Boston Solar did an amazing analysis of the location of our house, panel capacity, etc to give us a very complete return on investment scenario. To top it off, they guarantee a minimum production. They handle all the paperwork, really hold your hand and walk you through the installation, complete with training on how to monitor and the tax forms you'll need to file. Boston Solar installed a 8.5kW ground based system at my home in Boxford, MA in Oct. 2016. Going solar is a significant investment so while the economics made sense from the very first meeting, I needed to take the time to ensure I was understanding everything properly and to really weigh the pros and cons. This is a process that took weeks and my representative, Todd M., patiently answered all of my questions/concerns. I never felt pressured to make a decision I wasn't ready to make. Once the decision was made and the contract was signed they provided the necessary support to secure the financing through Mass Save. When that was done, Boston Solar took care of everything else. Everyone involved in the installation were very friendly and professional to deal with and always communicated what was being done and when. Any time I had a question or concern throughout the process, someone was quick to respond. I really could not be any happier with how the whole process went. It was a pleasure to work with the team at Boston Solar because they all seem to genuinely enjoy what they do. I would highly recommend Boston Solar to anyone. read more

I'm really frustrated and angry by my experience with Boston Solar. While I never needed convincing on the value of renewable energy sources, the big deal breaker was always the cost. Boston Solar completely oversold what their product was capable of and what my out of pocket expenses would be. In my situation, they should have discouraged me from moving forward, and in light of my experience, they should be compensating me for all my out of pocket expenses. I was promised that the system would cover almost all of the energy consumption of my two-family home, that the SMART energy incentive from Eversource would cover my monthly loan payments and one Boston Solar rep even told me that as an added incentive that homes with solar systems are exempt from property tax increases (total lie). In the 12 months prior to going solar the average combined electric bill for my unit and the public electric meter was $97.35/month. I don't have access to my tenant's bills but estimate that they average about $80/month. Since September 2018 I've paid an average of $44.92/month for electricity and since October 2018 I've been paying an additional $270.88 for my solar loan. The two SMART incentive checks I've received in May ($98.18) & June ($114.13) of 2019 don't even cover 50% of the monthly solar loan payments, so my out of pocket expenses for my first year of solar are over three times higher than what I would have paid had I not been scammed. Until the summer, my tenants did not notice any difference in their monthly electric bills. Going forward, EVEN IF I never get another electric bill, and EVEN IF the SMART incentive payments reach 50% of the solar loan, I'd STILL be paying more than I would have if I hadn't gone solar. I paid off the balance of my solar loan in July in an attempt to avoid the high-interest payments which are compounded daily. This was a serious hit to my savings as I wind down toward retirement. Boston Solar makes a lot of promises and they pressure customers to post positive reviews long before they have a chance to see if the system works as promised, so readers of these reviews should bear that in mind before getting scammed by a bunch of sweet-talking salesmen. I've reached out to them several times over the year and they are quick to try and diffuse my frustration, and then they forget about me. A system that only works in the summer months just doesn't cut it. read more

Since my solar system is a year old I did some math and after factoring in the purchase price, interest, increased insurance costs, tax rebates and solar electrical savings it looks like the payback period on my system is over 8 years. I signed my contract in January, 2017 and as of today's date (Feb 15th, 2018) I still have not gotten a single penny from SREC. The projected payment is half what I was told I'd get by the salesman from Boston Solar. This was the worst investment I have ever made in my life and I deeply regret spending the money on it. If I sell my house within the next 8 years I'll be giving thousands of dollars away. Right now the system still is in the Red for over $14,000.00 Also the snow and ice do not clear from the panels unless it is warm (well above freezing) and sunny. It is snows and then gets cold the panels are covered in snow and ice and do not produce anything. Boston Solar did a nice job on the installation but the figures they presented me were very inaccurate and greatly overstated the payback time for the system. Read the project summary VERY carefully; those little asterisks and the disclaimers about "financial estimates" and those "projected" savings are carefully worded but very optimistic in favor installing the system. read more

I had a solar consultation on 7/18/16 from Bill and I never heard from him again. He came by to provide the information which is similar to other solar company. He showed me a system of similar size that another customer installed. He said that if "you're not paying at least $5000 in tax at the end of the year then it wouldn't make any financial sense to go solar". Right off the back he sent a "Solar Financing Application" and stated I have to get approved for financing before they can proceed with the design. Why would I apply for financing when I have no information??? At the end of the consultation, I mentioned about the Mass CEC program and he said he'll look into it and get back to me with a system design. Never heard from the guy again. I would not recommend this company at all! 8/10/16 After the one star review I finally got a follow-up call in regards to the consultation, so I'm adding a star for their effort for improvement. I'm scheduled for another appointment with Bill in two weeks so we'll see how that goes. I'll add more comments based on that appointment. read more

A couple of months ago I helped my parents get solar panels installed on their house. After looking at several different installers in the area, we decided on Boston Solar because of all of the positive reviews they have received and because of the courtesy and professionalism of the sales agent, Josh, that came out to meet with us. From the very beginning to the end of the project, they were great to work with. We got in right at the end of the SREC2 program, and there was a slight chance that we would not get in because of the huge interest in solar power rihgt now. Boston Solar went above and beyond and even personally guaranteed that if we missed the cut off they would pay us the same rate that we were expecting to receive. We ended up making it in, but I can't imagine any other installers taking this extra step to ensure that their customer is 100% satisfied. read more

My husband and I just had the ductless heating and cooling system installed in our new (but actually 100 year old) house. We are enjoying the air conditioning and had a terrific experience with Boston Solar so far (we're still waiting for the solar panel installation to be scheduled). Our installer, Matt St George, spent three long days at our house, working 12+ hours on the third day to finish up. He was courteous, friendly, and efficient. He was understanding of my pets and ensured that no cats escaped and that my rodents cages were protected from dust during the installation. We couldn't have asked for a better installation, even though he had to come back a fourth day to tweak a couple things. No complaints, we highly recommend their services. DO NOT USE BOSTON SOLAR TO INSULATE YOUR HOUSE. this company sucks. they schedule appointments and then dont show and dont make any attempt to say sorry for not showing up and making you wait for nothing. also they schedule the work to be done and then DONT SHOW UP. so i went to their offices in woburn to get a straight answer and was told they hadnt included my house in their work schedule and denied ever talking to me about doing the work. they flat out lied about our conversation about doing the insulation in my house and they lied about the fact that they confirmed the dates for when the work was to be done.
