When my age was in the single digits, I discovered a love for bowling. I am now nearing 30, and my enjoyment of bowling continues - plus I've since discovered 10-pin. Though, in the recent year, life got a little complicated, and thus it's been a while. Not wanting to fight the continuous Boston traffic, I decided to give Boston Bowl - Hanover a try. It was quiet on a Saturday afternoon - it was tax free weekend, so everyone was likely out shopping. I'd brought my own shoes and ball, though there seemed to be plenty of different house balls available (though during busy times, your mileage may vary). The lanes were well oiled, the automatic scoring did not give me any trouble, and there were no malfunctions that needed an attendant. The facility was modern, with large screens (Spongebob was on), and music loud enough to be heard, but not approaching a metal concert (again, Saturday afternoon vs Friday night is likely a different experience). There's just one little thing: a bit of sticker shock. When I was a kid bowling with dad, it cost under $4 a string, maybe $4.25 during a popular time. Here, it was $8.50 per string [Fri. 5pm - Sun. Close]. I fully understand that it has been 20 years, yet, $25 for one person bowling for 15 minutes still seems a bit steep. Consider: if I had brought three friends we'd be be looking at over $100. read more

The facility was good for families; we liked that it had both ten pin and candlepin options as well as some arcade games.. However, I want to warn everyone to read the website VERY carefully! When you log in to the website, right smack dab in the middle of the home page is big "BOOK A LANE" button to reserve a lane ahead of time online. If you choose to do so, then it tells you that the price is $75/hour. Nowhere in the process does it indicate that there are other pricing options or the ability to walk in. So not being familiar with this establishment and thus not sure how busy it would be on a holiday weekend, we reserved the lane and paid ahead of time. However, as we were leaving, we noticed signs advertising a rate of $6 per player per game. Considering that we were only 2 adults and a 5 year old and only played 2 games, this would've been a much more economical option. We spoke with the manager about adjusting the price as we were paying almost double what we needed to ($46 vs $75), but they refused. Apparently if you go to the 3 bars in the left-hand corner of the website, there's a menu option that will show you the pricing. However, we strongly feel this information should be presented on the main page, especially when they're putting a big 'ole "BOOK A LANE" button on it. The current website design is extremely deceptive and could lead to you paying more money than you need to. And the management there is totally fine with that. read more

Not happy with my experience this past Friday, 5 days ago. I took my kids bowling for the last day of school, and in between turns went to the food stand to buy some drinks and a snack. I used my card in the terminal, and then asked if I had to pick the items up or if it would be brought to me, and when told they'd bring it over, that was the end of the exchange and I walked back to my lane. After I returned home, I saw my email receipt and my charge had increased by $8, a 25% tip that I did not authorize. I am familiar with square terminals, but in rushing back for my turn to bowl after ordering, I guess I missed the screen for a tip. That does not make it ok to have a 25% tip added on for 4 drinks and one snack, that was not okayed by me. I doubt the software automatically does that either. So double check your receipts if you go there. I tried to call and rectify it and was told that I must have tipped that and that I had to talk to the general manager - who won't be in for 3 days - to be able to speak to someone about it. It is now late in the day 5 days later, and I have not received a return phone call about why 25% was added on to my concession stand order. read more

I have now, three or four times, come to this bowling alley and been turned away from bowling, being told that they had no lanes available when they very clearly had multiple open. I'd like to be able to rate it higher, but when I drive 20 minutes and it's a 50/50 shot whether or not I can actually bowl, I can't give it more than one star. read more

We love Boston Bowl in Hanover. It's busy during school vacation weeks and yesterday was no different. Luigi was very accommodating and, upon request, moved our reservation to a different time. He was even there to check us in with a friendly welcome when we arrived. We ordered a pizza, two orders of chicken tenders and a basket of fries for 6 kids and it was hot, delicious and just the right amount. Can't wait to go back! read more

I can't say enough nice things about Boston Bowl in Hanover. The staff is gracious, attentive, and it really mattered to them that my group was having a fun experience. The food was amazing, the space was clean, the bowling balls felt clean which I can't say for every bowling alley. I will be a frequent visiter here as will the entire party that I was with. Was very disappointed I came to bowl myself in the morning and the gentlemen told me to come back after 3 because of a league and I said ok I will be back later on tonight and lanes should be free... as I come back later on they get tell me there still not open because of another league I told the gentlemen up front that the previous desk worker told me they were open after 3 and needed to work on there scheduling skills because if he told me that there was a league going on later on in the night I would of came a different day... poor customer service read more

Fun place to take the grandkids. The fact that you can keep the socks made me chuckle. The bowling alleys have bumpers (if you want them) which makes for fewer gutter balls (for youngsters and grandpa as well). The grandkids had fun bowling but also always had one eye on the arcade that had a few games of chance and a few of skill. Overall a nice family oriented place. read more

I came here recently on a whim, in hopes of finding a new bowling place in the South Shore area. In summary, it's a 22 lane bowling alley, including half candlepin bowling and half "regular" bowling. The main problem I have with this place is that there are so many deficiencies with nearly everything in this place. They have made some updates, but in comparison to some of the other bowling complexes in Massachusetts, it's not nearly up to par with their facilities, amenities, or cleanliness. I will say that were very reasonable and since there are very few decent places to bowl in this neck of the woods, I wouldn't avoid this place for convenience purposes. I live in Westwood though, and in my direction there are several more desirable destinations around like Pinz and King's. First off, all of the "real" bowling balls throughout this complex are greasy and slimy. Honestly, gross. Next, each lane has very limited seating. At more modern complexes (Pinz in Milford, Apex in Marlborough, King's, etc) there are full wrap around seating areas or separate tables for each bowling lane. Here it seemed very congested since every two lanes were very close to each other due to the lack of space. And then come the extreme deficiencies: both the actual bowling pins do not work correctly (in lane seven, several times an incorrect amount of pins would come down for someone's turn. While sometimes it worked towards them rather than against, it still shouldn't happen. Even the local bowling alley near my house that is ancient doesn't have this problem. Additionally, the scoreboards are completely broken and do not calculate scores correctly by any means. One person in my party started off with a score of 23 on their first turn (and if you have ever bowled before, you know that is impossible). My party had to manually get out our smartphones and calculate our scores (and it turned up that nearly everyone's was completely wrong). Overall, I was not too happy with this place and would only return if it was convenient since there isn't anywhere else better in the area to bowl. Hopefully in the future, the management of this establishment will look into and modernize or at least correct the issues with the pins and scoreboards, because that's really appalling. 3 stars. Well, took my kids here last night as it's been a while since we have all gotten out together. They ended up leaving the building whispering to me they'd rather have gone out with their mother because the places she takes them to don't have rude employees (um, seriously? Giving my kid a dirty look for falling on the hard floor and not asking if she's alright?) and sticky bowling balls. Not sure what sort of substance was on them but wasn't a pleasant experience and we will not be coming back. One of the female ~40 year old employees, the same one that ignored my daughter, seemed as if she almost didn't even work there when I wanted to ask a question about their automatic scoring system, rolling her eyes and quickly returning to her phone behind the counter. There's plenty of honest bowling alleys in this area that won't make you feel bad for spending your money on their services. read more

Came here the day after Christmas with friends and their families. There were 6 of us. We played a couple of strings. This bowling alley isn't as big as the one in Boston but it definitely has a newer flare. The seating is a little awkward but wasn't too bad. It can only fit so many people in one place. The bathroom was relatively clean and the staff were friendly so that's always a PLUS. We had a lot of fun here and it seemed like a good place to come back to when you're with family or friends, for young or old. Nice vibes! read more

It's hard enough being a parent, even harder during the middle of winter with nothing to do. A group of us decided to meet for a 9am bowl hang between 3 parents 5 kids. The older man working the front made it impossible for us to enjoy ourselves. We had 2 lanes between all the kids and two 2 years olds who had no idea what they were doing. They all needed the ramp assistance. The employee would not let us use 1 ramp assist for each lane and insisted we share bc more people were eventually coming? Yay how fun. I guess he thought the 10 year olds needed it more? After that he proceeded to accuse one of the fathers of bringing beer inside from home (at 9am with 5 kids under the age of 5) when it was a canned coffee. We could not wait to get out of there and honestly I wish I had asked to speak to a manager. read more

A fabulous family entertainment experience as we stumbled upon the annual Bowlapalooza!!! From the crazy contests (um hello? father/daughter victory dance contest ) to the **free** food (the pizzas are out of this world!) we were super surprised and super pleased! I'd highly suggest a pitcher of their special brew... we had the Deadwood seasonal. Delish! Finally, our kids were so incredibly excited and had an amazing time. We were in the middle of the crowd on Lane 17 and between the music and lasers, it was an 8 year old girls dream! That's what matters!!! read more

The bartender with the facial piercings and dark hair styled in a ponytail literally told me I'm too fat to bowl when I made a comment to her about their provided shoes not fitting properly. I know I may be slightly big for my stature, but never did I think just for trying to have a good night of bowling I'd be shamed for being slightly above average weight. I suffer from many health conditions such as Cushing's, kidney disease, and congestive heart failure that have plagued me my whole life. I would not recommend this establishment to anyone who simply wants to do an activity that everyone else does and enjoys everyday. I haven't been able to stop thinking about this interaction since and don't think it will ever leave me. If I had the energy, I would take this up further with their management but I really can't be bothered after such a blatant disrespect of my personhood. Thankfully, Luigi at the Hanover Bowladrome was very helpful and made sure that I was able to transfer my reservation to the proper location and time. We had our daughters 7th birthday party there yesterday. It was perfect. The kids had a blast and enjoyed bowling, pizza, chicken fingers, lemonade, and the arcade! The staff was great with everything from assisting with set up, helping us while we were hosting the party, organizing a group picture and bringing the birthday gifts to our car. Luigi was the best. From setting up the party, constantly checking in with us and the kids, and making sure there was nothing we needed that we didn't have have. He was a great help with the day and made sure to check in all day even though he was extremely busy with other parties. We would highly recommend having a party there. If you look up "major turnaround" in the dictionary, Boston Bowl Hanover will probably be the first thing listed. The Phillips Family Hospitality folks spent a lot of time and money renovating this place, and their efforts really paid off for me when I stopped in there today. The front desk lady was exceedingly friendly and helpful. She assigned me to a lane quickly, and she didn't hesitate to break a $5 bill for me later. The whole reception area has been redone, and the snack bar looks like it's worth one's time and money now. Unfortunately, Boston Bowl's taking over the Hanover Bowladrome meant that twelve candlepin lanes had to go, so the place only has twelve candlepin lanes left. They now have QubicaAMF automatic scoring, which worked perfectly and even told me my ball speed (I was right between 27.5 and 28 MPH). They've completely updated the decorations and masking units, and they've got a new color scheme. This leaves behind virtually no trace of the old Hanover Bowladrome look. There's also no step between the approach and the seating area anymore, which is good for kids and those with mobility impairments. They've even replaced the ball returns. The pinsetters, which were notorious for frequent breakdowns in the old days, worked great while I was there. The scoring was pretty good, and the pins were lively enough for me to average 109 over three strings (games, for you tenpinners). However, two parts of the bowling experience led me to deduct a star from this review. First, the foul line and lane surface up to the lob line looked chewed up and old, as if it hadn't been refinished in a while. It's not clear to me whether these lanes were replaced when the renovations were done. From what I could tell, it looked like the tenpin side had new lanes. Second, the pins looked worn, with some missing stripes and sporting grease stains. The approaching summer might be a good time for them to clean and re-stripe them. This place also had one of the cleanest bowling center restrooms I have ever seen, which is another marked improvement from its previous state. Boston Bowl Hanover was a fun place for me to get my candlepin game on, even for just a few strings. I recommend it, as they've saved an aging house and turned it into a pleasant place to roll! read more

What can I say? It's a clean bowling alley. They do have a bar, and they serve their own micro brew. It would be nice if there was a waitress or bus person to deliver food and drink. They also hand out complimentary socks with shoe rentals. Bonus star! It's not upscale like Kings, but otherwise everything was fine. read more

I signed my kids up for kids bowl free and purchased the family pass only to drive all the way to the bowling alley and have them tell me they don't honor the program the same day as sign up & purchase. No where during the sign up & purchase does it say no same day using. We were a family of 3 adults and 2 kids who were going for lunch & to bowl a couple of games. The manager said we would have to pay again or come back tomorrow. Very poor customer service. We left. Won't be back. read more

This place is absolutely horrendous. I came here on a Thursday night with my girlfriend and her friend. We all pay $10 each for the unlimited bowling. We all wanted to enjoy a night and get some beer while we enjoy our bowling. The bartender was absolutely rude and disgusting. She had a horrendous customer service and didn't know how to treat people correctly. They also said they called last call and hour before last call was supposed to be called therefore they were not serving us any beer. Then an hour later a message comes across over the loudspeaker saying last call. This is absolutely ridiculous and I demand a refund for my whole night because this is horrid! I used to enjoy coming here all the time, but I can promise, I WILL NEVER BE BACK. You guys need a complete makeover with staff who actually are here to help the customer, not push them away.
