This small, worn place keeps hanging around, so it must be doing something right, and I think it is very much a neighborhood place, a convenient kind of place, staffed by very friendly folks who, in almost all important aspects, do not share your sense of urgency, your need for speed! The area has little to attract most local residents not living close by, the menu will have limited interest to many not blessed to be born and raised in the South, but culturally, and from a culinary perspective, there is value here - it is mom & pop local, it is under the "chic" radar (there are no tacos or small plates here), but it is most certainly, real food. The Chopped Sandwich with Slaw is a huge dude - sloppy, gonna come apart on you messy, but it works. It is not the freshest pig, but it is righteous pig, especially when properly dosed with hot sauce - cuts the fetters from your culinary mind, and let it soar. The Hot Dog here is a teasing, conflicting anomaly for me, a life long seeker of the "perfect" dog - it should not work - the chili is thin, more BBQ sauce than anything else, it is small, and comes wrapped in TIN FOIL - but, somehow, for some reason, I really like this sloppy dog - perhaps tomorrow I repent, but today I like this dog. read more

Hello everyone reading this review. Let's get right into the review... for me it was average. Nothing special about the food, decor or service. As a first time patrons, we were not greeted before being asked "you ready". Smh After ordering our food we find out its a CASH ONLY restaurant. Thank God we had cash on us to cover our order. (UGH) The cost for our meals were average for the type of restaurant it is. The quality of food was plentiful. After a 30 min wait we received average tasting food. We will not be returning to this establishment because it was not up to our standards, but I do encourage you all to go and taste it for yourselves. Thats the beauty of these reviews, its just a persons opinion. I wish the owners well on their food endeavors. read more

You wouldn't know what to expect when pulling up to the restaurant. Its not in a good place but the business keeps up. I am not a fan of the wait game but it didn't necessarily take long, it took only 30 mins to get my food. every time i would order, I would do a call in order despise the waiting at the restaurant. takes awhile to do. But who wouldn't want to wait for some fresh hot food. Boss hogs fresh fried chicken wings, mac & cheese, and cornbread is amazing. Oh cant forget the pork BBQ sandwich which is the bomb. I've been eating at boss hogs since '08 that is a while back isn't it. if you want a chili dog thats the place to attend as well. Just know you eat here, you def wont want to leave. read more

Okay, this place does not get ANY style points but they are friendly and patient with newcomers and food is good. I had the ribs, BBQ, collards and pinto beans; my son opted for the Mac n cheese and baked beans w/ hush pups. The BBQ was lightly seasoned purposely and you are given Xtra sauce on side, ribs cooked and dipped in sauce vs. cooked on as I like. Pups were undercooked and baked beans can like, but the Collards, mac n cheese, and pintos were great. The 2 meat/side meal ran $12 with a good amount of bbq and about 5 rib bones. Went back again for lunch Wednesday, 11/23/11. I got there just a little after 11:30 and I was the only diner this time. By and large, this experience was very similar to my first several months ago. On this visit I ordered a repeat of the pulled pork sandwich but went with the sausage instead of the hot dog. The service was as polite as last time but the turnaround to get the food was quicker. Both items were steaming hot when I unwrapped them from the paper with the sausage being too hot to bite into for awhile. The all-the-way pork sandwich was both spicier and more moist than the last visit and I need no extra hot sauce. The sausage was also all-the-way with mustard, onions and slaw. I'm not sure what kind of sausage is used and I wish I had asked. This version was more dense and drier than I was expecting and the texture was more firm. The color was a dark brick red and reminded a little of blood sausage. The flavor was good being both smokey and peppery. It was priced at $2.25. Overall, I enjoyed it but I'm still curious about what it is/how it is made. The one other thing about this visit that was different lands on the negative side of the ledger. There was a strange, somewhat unpleasant smell throughout the restaurant this time. I'm not sure what it was but I hope they can get rid of it. read more

I have been stopping by since this place opened. They are good sometimes but the quality is going down. The place looks the same as it did 30 years ago. The last fish plate I bought there tasted like fish oil. While prices have gone up service and quality are down. I may never go back. read more

I had read Fred B's review on Yelp and thought I should give Boss Hog's a try. Let me say, I believe Fred summed things up well. Everything here works, except there was something about the Q just a bit off. I imagine this place looks the same as it did when it first opened, just a little more worn. UNC basketball and other posters fan the walls, and a projection TV sits in the middle of the floor, mostly for the staff to watch when things are slow I think. The people are friendly and very generous. You feel at home as soon as you step up to order. "Boss Hog" was in the kitchen, smiling. Yes, the name apparently comes from the old Dukes of Hazard television show according to "Boss". Not the fastest service, but surely some of the friendliest. The BBQ sandwich with slaw is huge and impressive. It comes with a fork because the sandwich will likely not stay together, again it is big. The meat was very moist with a hint of smoke, pepper, vinegar, pretty simple flavors. The slaw is mayo based but not overly so. The roll soft and not enough to hold so much Q. It made for a good sandwich, but maybe "not the freshest pig." There are no thicker tomato-base or vinegar based bbq sauces here, but they offer ketchup bottles of basic hot sauce, much like Texas Pete or Frank's Original. I added a good amount of hot sauce to cover the freshness factor and it helped. The hush puppies are large and not too sweet. Just a good pup, nicely browned outside, moist inside, and a little more dense than most. The sweet iced tea comes with lemon mixed in, so I am not sure if it is brewed or just a mix. It tasted like a mix, very "lemony" and I did not care for it at all. But as I got up to leave, one of the staff thanked me and wished me well and offered to refill my tea to go. How could I refuse. Nice folks. The prices are very good, downright cheap for the amount you get. There was a steady number of people coming in to pick up orders, so they have a good regular customer base. As I always say, try any place at least twice unless there is something critically wrong with with management or cleanliness. So I will try Boss Hog's again soon. For 11 people walking in last minute for lunch this place was the best for bbq. We ordered at the counter and the counter server was very pleasant. As we waited for our food there were many locals that came in. It was obvious they knew where to get the best food. We ordered ribs, chopped pork and wings. All were delicious but the original wings were crispy and one of the best we have had. The ribs were fall off the bone. We also had 5 sides. Everything was home made and good. I love their rack of barber q babyback ribs. I don't eat in there, I always order before I get there and never have to wait once I gets there. But, I must say , "that I do order there a lot so, they do know me now." and so my extra bbq sauce and hot sauce are already to go too .I don't have to do anything but, pay and leave. read more

I love Boss Hog's Bar-B-Que!!! It is the best Soul Food Restaurant in Greensboro. They cook the food after you order it so it will be fresh and hot (call 20 mins.ahead). They give you very large portions and the meat is seasoned well, just how I like it. My favorite is their fried chicken and potato salad!! It's a small Mom and Pop Restaurant that has cozy and comfortable seating. I usually get mine to go. read more

I totally agree with the last reviewer (Fred B). This place is in a small, old and un-kept strip mall which is normally ok with me if the Q is good. I and a friend dropped in a few days ago and each ordered the Q sandwich and a hot dog. The waitress at the front did not seem to happy to see us. No smile but...."what you want". The place was very clean but well weathered. The Q sandwich had the identical tomato based sauce as the hot dog. The BBQ was spicy but not real hot. Very good. The hot dog was pork, not beef but we both got it all the way. Quite good, anyway. I'll return later to see if I get a better greeting. Probably get it to go. I recommend you call before you come as all orders take 15- 20 minutes. Don't come if you are in a hurry or if you expect a smily face from anyone at the cash register! This was some of the some of the sloppiest food I've had in awhile. I ordered chicken wings with cabbage and fries. Just because I got the cabbage all my other food had to be wet and soggy like. The chicken wasn't crispy at all because it had got wet and it was rather bland. I did like the customer service and the wait wasn't that bad. I do not plan on going back to eat there anytime soon. read more
