Loved the ambiance and the fact that you pay first, no one is pushing the bill onto you at the end of you meal but this could be my first and last time eating there. It is very expensive to get sick. All 3 of us came home sick after brunch over there - it was our first meal that day so no doubt it came from that octopus & mozza sandwiches. Nicely decorated spot with friendly staff. But I was there for the pizza and it was just okay. Dough is firm and well done but not airy or anything to rave about. My pizza had little sauce and the mozzarella was also nothing special and got cold pretty quickly. I was hoping for a better pizza but alas, this is New Jersey where you'll have dozens of patrons walk into this place and claim it's the best pizza they've ever had. Oh well, I beg to differ. The staff were great and I didn't have anything else on the menu, which looked good. Maybe I'll try something else next time. Again, a nice little restaurant with nice people running it; but you're looking for a "home run" pizza, this place is not going to get you there. It's good but not great. Both experiences I've had here were great. The owner/manager is very kind and helpful when it comes to ordering and the setting is the perfect mix of nice date night and casual dining. I recommend their pesto pizza gnoccho fritto but I look forward to trying new stuff because everything coming out of the kitchen looks great. And of course, being BYOB is always a plus! read more

The day I was there it was raining. The tiles on the floor were wet and dangerously slippery. No one can afford to fall and break bones. I had to hold on to tables and chairs in order to get to an empty table. When I asked the waitress to dry the floor or put another runner down she said it did no good bc people would just come in and make the floor wet again. A little boy fell twice! She refused to help and the manager gave me a hard time the next day when I called to complain. Food was mediocre. Service was non-existent. I stood in line to order and pay. The food was delicious. Meatballs were perfect. The pizzas I'd give an 8/10 but the crust / bread was arguably the best I ever had. It's a nice setting in there. It's fast casual. You find a seat available (we got lucky because we got the last table) and then order your meal and pay at the counter. They give you a number to bring to your table and then once your food is ready, they bring it out to you. It's the perfect place for me because I like to get in, order, eat and get out in a timely manner. No waiting for the check here! Highly recommend!!! read more

This place is my go to when I'm craving pasta. Their bucatini amatriciana is definitely a must try as well as their vongole pasta dish. I think they know me already as I order the same thing every time lol. I took off one star because the 3rd party delivery service they chose can be unreliable sometimes and their fees is basically the same as DoorDash. read more

Dining this way with delicious food, is my favorite way to experience meals. It's efficient, quick, and it just saves a whole LOT of time. As much as I love waiter/waitress service, I actually see how much I dislike it when I dine in this way - starts to feel like a lot of time is spent waiting on my waiter or being interrupted by them. I love dining in this manner: figure out what you want, pay, take a number, find a seat, and after your meal is completed, you get up and leave. I'm just always on the go, thankful my office is so close, walk to and front. I've been to several dining establishments like this out in the west coast, but fresh to see it finally making it's way here to this area. Elevated dining, beautiful décor, and they have fresh cleaned hand towels in the bathroom. Everything I want, with no wasted time. A full on dining experience with less BS, less pressure on the norm of restaurant expectations - just great simple flavorful food in a great location. The pasta pesto was slathered with pesto (good if you really like pesto), Shrimp with polenta very nice, the Vitello tonnato ok - the veal very chicly paper thin (probably a cost saving as much as aesthetic choice). Very hip atmosphere but, in a way, like a VERY upscale Fazzolis - ordering at counter, then find a table. We went on a wet cold night, only table was near the door - very cold whenever the door opened. We've been to Boschetto twice in as many weeks, three times if you include yesterday's pizza takeout. It's a very casual, yet modern and charming restaurant. It's the gemstone in a small arcade of unique small shops located at the corner of Walnut and Grove St in Montclair. We have had the pleasure of meeting the owners Ryan and Robert - and even Robert's mother, who is as friendly as she is justifiably proud. We have ordered the octopus, pork chop, seafood risotto, different pastas - Amatriciana and Vongole, Gnocco Fritto (bread fritters) Bistecca (steak), Panzorotti Nocciola, 2 different pizzas and gelloto. To describe the culinary nuances of each dish is beyond both my ability to explain and my patience to write, but suffice it to say, each and every dish is made with the finest, freshest ingredients, uniquely prepared and perfectly presented. Just a few examples - if you think you've delighted in grilled octopus before, the "sauce" that surrounds it will make not ordering it again on your next visit almost impossible. Think a breaded pork chop is banal? This one, with summer berries will dissuade you. Gelato? Try their Italian made offerings; you may want - as I did, to get seconds. As mentioned, this is a casual dining experience by design; they have elected not to be a white tablecloth, candle lit, type eatery. It is very family/child friendly, especially at this time of year when the outside is open. There is no wait staff to take your order, rather you stand at the counter, gaze intently at the menu atop, order and pay for your food, get a placard with a number on it and grab a table. In a timely manner, your server will bring your food out in proper order. The establishment itself has a large outdoor eating area, more than ample parking and of course, like most Montclair restaurants is a BYOB. Hours now will be 12pm - 9m, with everything available on the menu from opening, no lunch/dinner variations - as of now. No reservations needed/accepted. The vibe is modern, background music not too loud and the total sound level more than comfortable for this boomer's ears - damn I hope it stays that way and doesn't change into another Montclair "place to be seen, not to eat, can't hear yourself think, food is an afterthought" joint. But I'm guessing even if they were to be so tempted, Robert's mom, who like any good Italian (I'm guessing?) mom, would set' em straight in a hurry. I'm kind of selfishly hoping that Boschetto doesn't get so popular that our choice for dinner will be limited to the slower, late afternoon times. If you are a person attuned to a finer level of culinary art, there is also another sensory delight to be had and that is experiencing the beaming and justifiable pride and confidence that Ryan and Robert (in a town replete with excellent restaurants) exude in having created their very own masterpiece. There's a reason this restaurant has so many 5 star reviews, including this one. The pizza was so fantastic, but the owner (guessing he was the owner) takes so much pride in his product. My wife's pizza came out first and mine was slightly delayed. When he came out with my pizza later, he apologized for the delay and refunded the cost. I explained that it really wasn't a big deal and it was hardly that long of a wait. He told me the first pie was not up to the standards of his restaurant and he refused to serve it to me. Stopped by in the late afternoon and had a great experience. Parking was easy as there is a few spaces in the strip mall. The rest has a nice bright atmosphere with good seating. You have to place your order at the counter though which makes it feel less upscale. For the prices they charge, it would feel a better experiment to have waiters take the orders at our table. Anyway we had the pulpo octopus which was cooked perfectly and the accompaniments were perfectly suited with the octopus. The pasta pesto was excellent , very minimal just pasta, pesto and pine nuts which was well balanced. $31 for the pesto with no proteins is a bit much. I had the ciopinno risotto,m which had 3 shrimps, 3 mussels and 3 clams. Excellent flavors but again a bit overpriced for the portion. We also had their pizza which was good but not great. Maybe Montclair has high rents that command higher prices but I'm on the fence about returning. The food was very good and unique which was what we were hoping for. Not like your typical Italian restaurants that serve the same flavors. read more

A few months ago I walked into Boschetto to meet and greet the incredibly welcoming partners in this new venture, Rob and Ryan. I distinctly remember sarcastically saying to Ryan, "This is just what Montclair needs, another Italian restaurant." Some eight visits and several sumptuous meals later I came to realize that Boschetto was precisely what this town needed. A reasonably priced Italian restaurant with an ever-expanding menu featuring some tremendous non-traditional dishes, excellent pizzas and pastas, and extremely welcoming hosts. I've sampled much of this wonderful fare, and have yet to be disappointed. From the luscious Pomodoro salad, to the Porchetta, broccoli rabe and provolone sandwich, on made to order pizza dough, to the savory pastas, this casual, cozy spot is now my go-to-often place for all things Italian. I admit to being a bit skeptical at first blush, but Rob & Ryan are doing it right. Ciao for now...but rest assured I'll be back again. And again. And again.
