There are restaurants with great food, and then there are places with great people behind the food. Boriqua Kitchen is both. One afternoon in Hayward, my family and I showed up right at 6 PM, exactly at closing time. We had just left a family party but purposely held our appetite because our favorite Puerto Rican food truck was finally back in town. My wife and I were married in Old San Juan, and Puerto Rico will always hold a special place in our hearts. We even travel back to the island with our kids whenever we can. When Chef Darren saw how disappointed we were that we had missed them, he didn't turn us away. Even though they were already closed, he fired the grill back up and blessed our family with an incredible meal. That level of hospitality, heart, and genuine Puerto Rican warmth is rare. The food was absolutely amazing as always, authentic flavors that instantly take us back to the island, but the kindness and service meant even more to us. We'll always support Boriqua Kitchen. We came across Boriqua Kitchen outside of the Lucky's parking lot when we were about to do our grocery shopping.  I am always up for Puerto Rican food so even though we already had dinner, I had to at least try a couple of sides like their empanadas and garlic tostones.  Both were full of flavor and the garlic tostone had the perfect crunch that is offset by their addictive dipping sauce.  I definitely need to follow them on IG to see when they will be back so I can try those entrees too. read more

I was out running errands and saw where they were going to be for lunch and the times. The Universe was working with me that day because I found a park and was 4th in line before they were taking orders. Please be mindful that there was only one person taking the orders and cooking/prepping the food. I don't know if it is always the case, but he got it done. Of course, there was somewhat of a wait. Ok don't get me wrong, I may not know left from right on what is authentic PR food, but when I put something good in my mouth - I know, nuff said. I enjoyed it a lot. The only con is the portion size. I was able to get a plate in Alameda. Nice area to just walk across and enjoy food in the park and find some tables around. The grass is nice too. The menu is pretty straight forward, either a plate or a la carte items. I went with chicharrones de pollo. Very nice and crispy. The inside of the chicken very tender. The rice and beans are in good flavour as well as the plantains. Plenty of plantains which were yum. The rice had nice seasoning; tangy and flavourful. I was excited to see this food truck across the street from the hospital. I ordered the chicken wing plate and two empanadas. Unfortunately, it wasn't until I arrived home that I saw I'd been given a pork chop. No harm done. There were two people ahead of me. The wait was a little long (had to extend parking meter from 10 to 15 minutes, but I'm assuming that's because they cook everything fresh. Service was friendly and apologetic for the wait. Everything was delicious--including the pork chop, and for deep fried meat? it was not greasy at all, and though I like my pork chops, a little less cooked than most, it was a perfectly seasoned cooked medium, and still tender enough for the flavor to come through. Would I rather have gotten the empanadas? Of course, but anyone can make a mistake, and I might have been unintelligible. Delicious arroz con gandules, too. The cost for everything was $35, including $5 tip. I enjoyed the food very much. I love Puerto Rico and it's really hard to find food of this quality around here. I ordered the (chefs special) which was the deep fried pork shoulder with a side of arroz con gandules, maduros, and habichuelas. Also ordered the ground beef empanadas, and the BK wings. Finally got to try Boricua Kitchen and it did not disappoint. Got the Chicharonnes De Pollo which was fried perfectly- tender but crispy and so flavorful! Apparently this is also Bad Bunny's favorite place to order from when he's in The Bay. The portions they give is good enough for two meals. I'm looking forward to trying the fried rockfish meal next. IYKYK listen up east bay you need to track this food truck down and get yourself some while they have them and they run out fast. i've had them bookmarked for years and finally saw from their instagram stories that they were in hayward last weekend so we stopped by heritage plaza park and gave them a try! was lucky that there was no wait cuz even with only one person ahead of us, the food still took maybe 20 min to come out. the meal overall was satisfying, but the meat was a little dry so nothing to rave about. the thing i did love were the maduros. those i would definitely come back for and maybe try new entrees next time. i got the carne frita special and my husband tried the empanada which he liked. read more

I have followed this food truck to three different locations and when I saw it in Alameda at the beach across the street from where I just moved to I was excited. UNTIL I got the poor customer service that I got. I waited at the order window for 10 minutes wondering when Darren (the owner) was going to turn around and greet me and take my order. I made some obvious noises hoping to get his attention but no luck. I finally had to say " are you taking orders?" When he turned around it was very apparent by his tone and body language that I was annoying him. He didn't even say hello. I ordered two pork chop dinners at $19 a piece which comes with one pork chop, rice, all of 5 beans and plantain bananas. How do you only give 5 beans for a $19 order that comes with rice and beans??? I will never spend my money there again. He was extremely rude and so was the girl working with him. Why do you only give 5 beans for an order??!!! Don't waste your money, it's not worth it. His customer service and lack of portion sizes are not deserving of your money. read more

Got the Clemente plate when they were in Hayward. The chicken, tostones were good but the rice was not up to par, it seemed like it was from the day before nor did it taste like it had any sofrito. I love to support other boriqua's all over the country, however, unfortunately I cannot write a positive review. I traveled to the Bay Area to spend time with a friend. Bragged about how tasty our food is. We went 30 mins out of her way to get plates. I spent $64 bucks on 3 plates. Neither me, my friend or her mom enjoyed the food. Rice was hard and under cooked. Pastelios were underwhelming, beans were way too salty and the plantanos were burnt and super small. What was more embarrassing for me was that my friend's mom was complaining. Her words were "This isn't Puerto Rican food". Please please do better. There are very few places in both SoCal and NoCal that serve our food. Being a West Coast Boricua comes with the challenge of finding Puerto Rican food, but come here and look no further. Yum. A few months back I came here after a trip to Costco. I saw this food truck and suddenly wasn't in the mood for Costco pizza. I've followed Boricua Kitchen on Instagram for about a year and finally seized the opportunity. When I came in the first time the daily special was cat fish - or maybe just friend me fish - arroz con gandules, beans and plantains. Everything was cooked to perfection. I heard singing from the starving pit of my stomach when I started eating. Yum. The wait time wasn't long for me the first time I came. When I came, there wasn't anyone in front of me so the food didn't take long to be made. It took about 15 minutes and my food was hot and ready. The second time I came it took only about 10 minutes. I ordered chicken and rice - not sure what it's called on the menu. My only gripe with the last time I came here (Sunday) was everything was perfect except for the rice, which was noticeably undercooked. That was a real bummer. It's incredible. The chicken was succulent yet crispy, piled so high it looked like two servings. They were my first time really digging into PR cuisine in the restaurant/food truck scene, and it was so good I wanted to try out more places locally. No matter where I went, Boriqua Kitchen has remained the Number 1 spot for me. There's just something about their #21 (you'll see it on the menu). I don't use social media much. Don't like it. So when a food truck is so good I install Instagram just to be able to follow them and keep track of where they're gonna be next... that's literally never happened before! Their maduros are big chunky pieces, sweet and savory, soft and chewy, and blew my freakin' mind when I paired it with their BK Sauce. I wait about 10 minutes for my order, and it comes out so heavy with food I'd be nervous putting it in a paper grocery bag. Luckily, Boriqua regularly sets up shop at this Costco every Saturday between 12 and 7pm. Today I ordered the Roberto Clemente ($15) - marinated fried chicken thighs with rice, beans, and plantains. The chicken tasted tantalizingly savory; the smell taunted me as I drove home to eat this takeout. The chicken cubes had crisped up as well. The rice and beans, having soaked up some stock and tomato?, turned this meal into a veritable cornucopia of umami that compels one to return. Really disappointed in this place. The food and the behavior of the owner. Ordered the chuleta (pork chop) and the pork chop was cooked well but was just a terrible cut that should've never made it out the kitchen. One half was super dry because of how badly trimmed it was. It was also smaller than the palm of my hand. The beans and rice were flavorful and moist but the included squash was ALL rind. My friend tried to order alcapurrias (which they do serve regularly to my knowledge) and was greeted by the owner who exclaimed "where the F$*c! do you see that on my menu?!!" I guess they weren't serving them that day. That's no way to treat a customer who's patronizing your business. Especially when you're always preaching about "mi gente".
