Shrimp Tacos

So happy we went here to eat for our first visit to Douglas! The staff was so sweet & accommodating. Our food was DELICIOUS! I ordered the ranchero style shrimp tacos & I was shocked at how much shrimp was actually in my tacos. My hubby ordered one of the burros & he absolutely enjoyed it. The restaurant itself has the elements of eating at a good friend's home, open & bright lighting. And the restrooms were SO CLEAN!!!!!! Will be returning!

The name is apt - it's located perhaps two blocks from the border crossing! The restaurant was a little hard to find, as Google Maps put us across the street from where the actual restaurant was located. The restaurant inside is clean and the service was very friendly. We ordered shrimp enchiladas and enchiladas with eggs (under breakfast plates). Both came with 3 enchiladas, Mexican rice, refried beans, salsa and sour cream. The food took a more than average amount of time to come out, but that makes me think it was cooked to order! The food itself was excellent: bursting with flavor, pretty spicy but savory and bright. It's a hidden gem in Douglas!

The location and decor is on point, also clean dining area. I was told that this place has delicious food so we had to try. We ordered 3 burritos and cocido de res (beef stew). We waited 30 minutes for our food. I was just dumbfounded of how long it took since it was a simple order. The asada burrito was just ok, chicken burrito was really dry, and the beef stew was again just ok. No smile or welcome from the staff, it was "what do you want and here it is" kinda experience. However, I would try this place again. I'm a pro small business supporter, but I don't sugar coat my reviews.

Border Taco has a nice spacious dining area with Mexican Decour. The servers are all very nice and accommodating. The portion sizes are good especially for the price! They have everything from caldo de queso to pancakes, chimichangas, enchiladas, Mexican shrimp cocktail, salads..... This is a great place to go if you have a large party - the menu is pretty extensive!

NO Refills!?! : o

**Warning**No refills on drinks** We travel to Douglas a few times a year and the worst part is finding a decent local place to eat. Chatita's was so so but is seems to have closed... we liked the Mighty Sports Grill but it seems they closed too. December 2013 we tried Denny's and Bleh... later on we gave Border Taco a try... Place is nice and clean, bathrooms are nice (that is a must being on the road all day)... Food was good but inconsistent, service is OK but kind of funny... And, don't be fooled by the soda machine... they charge for every cup, and they don't even tell you in advance... they should be called South of the Border Taco just for that... we also had water and they never refilled it... oh well, I will summarize it, service is ok, order food, get food, get the bill, but not much customer service skills. Oh, wait, there was a young girl that was very nice and attentive. We ordered 5 shrimp ceviche tostadas, one big menudo, 4 tacos (cabeza, barbacoa, asada y adobada). We got 5 tostadas, they looked and tasted good, with 2 big boiled shrimp on top each. The menudo was huge, but not very tasty... and we were missing one taco... and the ones they brought didn't have any vegetables or garnish, just tortilla and meat. We had to ask for it and then we got a nice plate with cabbage, cucumbers, pico de gallo, etc. Later a friend joined us and we got breaded shrimp and one more ceviche tostada. Shrimp was good, I didn't taste the rice or the beans. The ceviche tostada was bleh, very wimpy and no big shrimp on top!?! so that was not nice, I ordered an extra one because I liked the first 'batch'... Oh wait, and if you have OCD and want to check they in fact charged you for the right items... they just bring you the total and little notes for whatever you ordered, Anyway... Worst part is we may be back if we don't find a better place : P

Probably one of the best restaurants in Douglas. I have eaten here plenty of times and have never had a bad meal.

Way over priced! $20 for a dozen tacos, it ridiculous. Better places to eat Mexican food in town with better prices.

Two words- REAL avocado. If you've been to other restaurants in the rural desert SW in the past…read morefive years or so, you know why I started with that seemingly simple statement. My husband and I tried this taco cart (a distinctive black food truck located on the D Ave side of Castro Park between 9th and 10th Streets) for the first time today. It was easily the best food we've had in Douglas, and we were blown away! So fresh and generous with both the meat and the toppings. The owner's salsa is also top notch, spicy but very edible even in quantity. The pricing was very good, particularly including all the fresh tomato and avocado slices. We tried two types of tacos, the tostada, and this fantastic loaded type of quesadilla. It was like a quesadilla on steroids (it was more like the type I make at home, packed full of meat and vegetables). My hisband also had yummy curly fries. The cook gave excellent service and he helped us pick a couple dishes when he saw we were new. The ingredients are in Spanish, so this was very helpful. The lettuce and other veggies were very fresh and had no taste of cleaners or disinfectant (like soap, etc) that we have run into at other Douglas restaurants. That comment may sound strange, but we've encountered it more than once at other establishments. We are looking forward to trying everything on the menu! This taco cart would be a hit in any city. If you are used to the desert SW customer ratings, you may have noticed a lot of people rate VERY generously. I think it's the lack of options, sort of rating-by-comparison, "grading on a curve" effect. This taco cart is a real 5 star, an LA or Seattle 5-star.
