This was the only food place I went to in the Munising area that I actively disliked. The only good thing was the view of the lake, but don't let that trick you for coming in. I took a risk and got the burger at a mainly Mexican place, my friend got the fish burger. They both were awful and you can tell the burger patty was frozen, the fries were great though, and they give you a lot. My other friend got fish tacos and the tacos came out with no fish on them. My partner and I traveled to Munising this past summer and decided to try Border Grill on June 17, 2026. Based on the reviews and website, we expected food quality somewhere between that of Taco Bell and a high-end authentic Mexican restaurant, which was fine and perfect because we had driven quite a way and were starving! Pulled into the parking area; it was dead, maybe one or two cars parked in the lot. Upon entering, it was not as expected, as this was not a standard restaurant; was set up like fast food; required to look over a menu posted on a billboard and order at the cashier's counter. Fine, no biggie. Looked over the menu for a few minutes while being ignored by staff and then were ready to order. The two of us stood there like idiots at the register and continued to be completely ignored by an inattentive zombie employee who was not even busy, refused to even look in the direction of the register, just bumbling around aimlessly while proceeding to ignore us for another couple minutes. When he finally lazily shuffled over to the register, there was no greeting; I had to initiate communication and even ask if he was ready to take the order and how the process at this establishment worked. With about as much energy and enthusiasm as a rock, he proceeded to reluctantly convey that you place your order here, seat yourself at a table, and the food is brought out. We placed our order: 2 Grande Burritos (one Steak, one Chicken) with Mexican rice and "Border" salsa, 1 Nachos with Queso, ground beef, sour cream and pico, and 2 fountain drinks. We got our own drinks and found a table. After waiting a considerable amount of time, another employee with about the same level of energy and enthusiasm as the cashier delivered our food. The nachos did not have the Queso as ordered, they put the wrong cheese on the nachos, so I asked for a side of Queso and a side of salsa. He said they don't have regular salsa, it's "Border" salsa and points to the orange liquid ooze in a 1 oz. plastic cup in the nacho basket!! What?? Haha no real SALSA at a Mexican restaurant?? I said do you have anything that resembles salsa here? He said he'd be back with the queso and a salsa-like thing they had. I also asked for extra sour cream (which were in cheap packets). After waiting a long time, I had to get up to check on them because I thought maybe they went back to take a nap instead. We ended up receiving the Queso in a small plastic ramekin cup with a plastic lid; the swill inside they call Queso was like COLD PASTE! This was not Queso! The nachos were cold, and the Mexican beef atop was like something you'd make at home with an Ortega seasoning packet; actually no, Ortega or any store-bought seasoning mix made at home is way better than the swill placed atop the cold, cheap nacho chips. Even store-branded chips in a bag from any grocery store are way better than the cheap and cold chips they served. Now, on to the burritos... It was a bunch of cold, low-quality swill stuffed into a cold burrito shell. The chicken nor the beef was seasoned at all; plain and cold and of very low quality. Like, after a bite or two, you could tell the experience would just get worse. The rice was like something your mother made from a packet on the stove but didn't read the directions. Honestly, I don't know what was worse: the customer service or the food. I decided to approach the front and ask for a manager to see if they had any idea why the food was so cold and terrible. He offered to make another burrito with fresh beef. I decided to give him a chance. Nope, received the same terrible quality beef, same cold terrible quality bland rice, and same bland low-quality, tasteless, cold ingredients. At this point, my guest and I were so turned off by the employees and food, we lost our appetites and just got the heck out of there. I worked in the restaurant industry for 17 years; was a kitchen manager for 10 and ran a café and catering business and know there are ways to train this staff and improve the food quality here and hope one day someone steps up at this establishment to do both. Until then, I do not recommend this restaurant to anybody, nor would I subject any other living creature to the pernicious and pestilent customer service. This is NOT a Mexican restaurant. They don't have salsa!! Their queso is cold paste and comes in a plastic cup!!! Their customer service from the staff is almost as cold as their burritos! STAY AWAY and get a pizza!!! read more

All meals come with chips and salsa. Chipotle salsa is the best one, IMO. Burritos are large and they have a variety of "flavors." We haven't tried the tacos. The place is clean. BG has become one of those restaurants I craved between visits to Marquette. The orange salsa is weirdly addicting. Glad they opened a few more locations so we can get it when visiting other parts of the UP. This one is clean, new, with a lake view. Food is the same as the other locations. 4 stars not 5 because they're stingy with the napkins and plastic ware, and you have to wait in a long line to get back to the counter to ask for more. My son asked for no sour cream on his bowl and it was smothered in it, he had to scrape off. I am sure this location will do well despite these flaws. read more

Breakdown: Food was overpriced and bland at best. The chicken tasted like it just had salt and pepper. Definitely overpriced, especially with lettuce being an up-charge (lettuce is most certainly cheaper than pico de gallo-- the lettuce was romaine). Fountain drinks cost $5 for 2 large drinks. For a couple 10 mLs of syrup mixed with carbonated water, that's insane. The meal total was around $30 for 2 entrees. We then got asked to tip. For $30, the owner can pay out a decent wage to these workers. Remove the tipping option from the tablets. It makes the customer feel forced to pay a tip. I've worked in restaurants and seen the income sheets and cost breakdowns. The owner is definitely making bank on these locations with tourism. The service was adequate, but the tables need repair. TLDR: Food is expensive for what you get, the food needs to be seasoned better, this is not authentic Mexican, this is a tourist trap, and spend your money elsewhere. read more

We were very disappointed by the Whitefish Basket - it came with three small pieces of fish and lots of fries, for $17. Asked the server, but was told to speak to the manager. The Whitefish Burrito does have much fish either. We don't mind paying more, but the quantity of fish is grossly under represented. Not a good way to make customer happy and writing good reviews. This is a great place that is similar to Chipotle to stop at for a lunch or dinner. I got a veggie bowl and could tell that all the ingredients were very fresh. The peppers were perfect on it, not too sautéed or seasoned. The bowl comes with a side of chips so I ordered a cup of guacamole, and that tied the meal together perfectly! The staff was amazing here and fixed any issues immediately. There is plenty of seating and I enjoyed my meal there as well as packed up my good amount of leftovers. I asked for a plain steak taco for my daughter with only lettuce but was told by the cashier I had to pick a taco on the menu. I picked a taco off the menu and removed everything except steak and lettuce and they brought it out with everything on it. After a back and forth, we got another taco with still tomatoes. The food was unfortunately not the best quality and lacking flavor. With the prime real estate this spot is in, the potential is great. To the owner: instill customer service in your employees, upgrade the meat used, focus on flavor (especially for the price charged), or change up the type of food you make. We stopped in for a patio lunch today. I have to admit we had low expectations just because it's a small town. The building is nice and modern and they have a good size patio with a view of the water which allowed us to eat outside with our dog. We ordered a rice bowl, a kids chicken taco, a gourmet burrito with chicken and a tostada bowl. Everything was really good! we ate every bite, even our kids. I got food to go. I waited right by the counter for it, and the person who waited on me, handed me the bag and told me to have a good night. When I got back to the hotel, the food I was given was not the food I ordered. Because I didn't want to travel back, I decided to try what was in the bag. I had some tacos with maybe a spicy chicken that was deep-fried, a really good chicken burrito, and a kids grilled cheese, or some kind of quesadilla grilled cheese. It wasn't what I ordered but it was all really good! The only thing I wish I had gotten was my salad ha ha. Will someone explain that orange sauce? I'm from the South and I've never had TexMex or Mexican like this. There was nothing wrong with the food. It did the job, but was bland. And why the bad country music? At least play good country. But it was nice to have seating overlooking the dock and saw the tour boat come in. I would love to write a review on the food here, but I wasn't able to taste any of it. My wife and I stopped here after arriving from out of town. We just needed a quick place to grab a bite after a long day of traveling. It was about 7:00pm and it seemed to be steady with 3 or 4 people in front of us waiting to give their orders. After about 15 minutes of waiting, we were next in line, the cashier come out from behind the counter, looks at us and says, "sorry....but I just clocked out." We hung around for about 5 more minutes waiting to see if anyone was coming to replace him at the counter. At that point we just decided to leave. I don't know if I should start with the boiled steak with no seasoning on my tacos as the worst part or the fact it took 30 minutes to screw our order up the first time you brought them out. The fact you charged me $5 per taco is highway robbery. Another issue you may want to address is your guacamole could use some lime juice and salt. The food here is just... strange. It's like an attempt at Mexican food from someone who has never actually had Mexican food. It wasn't bad, but just not at all the Mexican we were expecting.
