In my opinion, the best Tex-Mex food I have ever had because I'm partial to Marquette, MI restaurants, and it really is the best Tex-Mex food I have ever had. Two locations in Marquette, MI- same great service and food quality at both. Most people either love it to death or avoid it. I suggest drinking the Border salsa (addiction joke). I eat at Border Grill more than any other restaurant, and I am never disappointed! For quick, Tex-mex food (usually no more than 10-15 minute wait at most), I am consistently impressed with the deliciousness of the food (veggie burrito is my go-to). It is also reasonably priced for what the amount and quality of food you get. I recommend Border Grill to anyone who is looking for "Mexican" based cuisine! I grew up loving Border Grill, and now living across the country I still crave it all the time, and love it just as much. The food is delicious and fresh, and the staff is always friendly. The new building isn't bad either, I like the soda-machine-on-both-levels thing they have going. I would HIGHLY recommend the veggie quesadilla, and lots and lots of Border salsa (what is IN this stuff??? ADDICTING). The downside: parking can be a pain. I would recommend forgoing the front lot if it looks busy, it always seems like an accident waiting to happen (but there is plenty of parking in the back). Also this place gets CROWDED. The congestion has been relieved somewhat with the expansive new building, but it can definitely get loud and stressful at peak hours. Anyway, nothing beast Border Grill the morning after a late night drinking (or after a day at the beach, or in the evening for dinner, or even when you're not hungry but love it so much you try to shove it down anyway...). Quite disappointed. Never going back. I travel quite a bit for my job so I rely Yelp to point me in the right direction for excellent food or even good food. I LOVE Mexican or even Tex Mex food. I ordered the gourmet burrito w pork. I wasn't disappointed in the burrito but the side of guacamole was browned on top ( clearly out of a cooler) and the Queso and chips made my stomach turn and I paid for it the next day(see photo). The chips were obviously from a food service company and not fresh and the queso? Well let's just say it had the consistency of expired cream of something soup. Absolutely disgusting. It had the color of baby poo on a bad day and tasted worse. I of course thought "well maybe that's the way they make it?". My mistake, it was obviously microwaved and not all the way through. I threw it out but not before it made me sick. Ugh- even if you are a semi fast food place you need to pay attention to every detail of a meal. Not just the burrito. Never going back. read more

They really are a great business overall! They have grown so much mostly because they truly have 5 star service in a casual setting. I am very happy that you can now Veganize your food when you order to make sure no meats or cheeses are included in your food. Fresh tasting ingredients and both MQT locations have an awesome atmosphere. It's the closest thing you'll find to Tex-Mex in the UP! Don't expect too much "heat" in their spices though! I will also say the freshly made tortilla chips are always a winner! My main issue is personal preference, I'm not a huge fan of anything on the menu. I usually order sides and put together a meal for myself, because nothing is close to what I would want without paying full price for a menu item in which I'm going to leave 5 ingredients out. anyway. read more

Went to BorderGrill with a friend from Oaxaca, Mexico on the last day of a 3 day trip and wish we would have discovered it sooner. We travel extensively around the Midwest, always looking for good Mexican food and usually disappointed. We had 3 items, carne asada, border burrito and chips with fuego salsa. All were impressive and my friend gave his (Mexican) thumbs up to everything. He's usually the first to track down the manager and complain. Not bad, not great. Better than Taco Bell, that's for sure, but if Chipotle comes to town, it'll probably put this place out of business.

The good: prices are low (a few cents lower than comparable items at Chipotle/Moes/Qdoba), and they serve beer and margaritas. The building is one of those newish angular steel and glass two-story numbers, with lots of metal chairs, if you like that sort of thing. The not-so-good: the process. You walk in and it kind of looks like Chipotle, but there's no menu board or assembly line, so you're not sure if you should seat yourself or order at the counter. There are like 6 employees standing around, who will direct you to the couple of folded menus hanging in a pocket on the wall. You order and they give you a pager, but bring your food to your table before it goes off. You get your own soft drinks and napkins, but they bring the food on real plates, with silverware. The food was OK but very bland; I drowned mine in the Tapatio that was on the table (only sauce option?) to make it taste like anything. I got the Border burrito, which came with a cup of an orange sauce that kind of tasted like French dressing--I'm still not sure if it was for the burrito or the tortilla chips that come on the side. The floor was not too clean, but with the type of food they serve, and their predominantly teenage clientele, I guess it gets dirty quickly. As Mr. F observed, "It feels like a cafeteria in here." All in all, it's an OK option for the price, but probably shouldn't be the highest-rated restaurant in Marquette on Yelp. read more

It's not the worst place in town, but it's not the best. They use the term "Mexican food" pretty loosely here. It's more American wrapped in tortilla than anything else. Their use of cilantro is pretty staggering, so if you're not into that, steer clear. They do have good burritos and a tasty queso. I'd avoid it if you're looking for a great taco though--they come off as rather tasteless. Overall, I hit it now and again, but don't make a habit out of it. read more

If you're looking for truly good (or authentic) Mexican or Tex-Mex food in the U.P., you'll likely never find it. However, when you have a yen for something in that vein, the Border Grill is a decent option. Their foods (wraps, burritos, salads) are flavorful and fresh and served in a clean environment. I still can't get over their bizarre idea of "salsa," though, which is some sort of semi-creamy whipped tomato gorp. Whenever I visit Marquette I try to stop at the Border Grill. I've only had one item from the menu before - the Mahi Mahi burrito, but I get it everytime because it is that good. The chips also come with a free dip that is very flavorful and reminds me of a bisque. It was unusual but definitely makes me want to go back. read more
