In all the years I've been coming here, I've never had this happen before, especially on a bill of around $60 for a party of two. I feel this should be clearly disclosed to guests. As someone who has worked in the service industry, we were always told to communicate when gratuity has been added, as failing to do so can come across as misleading and may result in customers unintentionally tipping twice. I don't necessarily take issue with gratuity itself, but transparency and clear communication are important parts of good service.

I need to say, I have been going to all the Border Cafes in the area and this one out of all of them is my least favorite and worst one. It probably deals with the fact that I found a long black hair as I was eating my burro. I have never felt more nauseous in my life, nor had I ever experienced something like that before while going out for dinner with my husband and daughters. For cheap prices and food coming out so quickly, I would think they would take their time preparing it... but now I clearly understand why that happened. Not only was that a bad experience, but I told my server and they informed me they would get the manager, but no one showed up for a good 10 minutes... you would think someone would have came as soon as possible, but instead that young brunette that was the manager was dilly-dallying with her male co-workers... then happen to attend to my table & I explained to her what happen and saying apologetically she would get me another burro, but I denied because I was done eating at this point, and she had the audacity to be RUDE and just say oh ok as she walked away with a kniving, malicious look on her face. Who acts like that when you're managing a restaurant?!!!??? As if I wasn't mad enough because of the way the brunette manager had acted, I was leaving the restaurant starving, AND as my daughters were finishing up eating their kids meal, the waiter next to us an older man with a bald head, was clearly having a bad night, I could hear him talking poorly about his co-workers, not something I want to listen to while I am out with my family, unfortunately we were sitting close to where all the servers were hanging out. Meanwhile to TOP THINGS OFF this had to be the icing on the cake, I washed up in the bathroom right after because I had it with that place, I over heard one of the waitresses bawling her eyes out in one of the stalls on the phone crying how her GM was being SO rude, unprofessional, and flat out mean to her, WOW did we choose a night to go here?!? No matter what kind of day any one is having, you least expect your managers, mind you your GM being rude to any of your co-works.... but that EXPLAINS IT, if the GM is rude and unprofessional then no wonder why the brunette manager was unprofessional and then the bald headed older male server was extremely loud and talking poorly about his co-workers.... it's all a sad chain. (disregarding the quality of the food) I have noticed the difference and have observed the past year, change of management and change of workers have definitely impacted this restaurant in Saugus for the worst I must say. Who ever dares to try it, good luck. The fat Cactus for Mexican food and experience had a livelier and more professional appearance, at least with their wait staff and managers look to say the least. If I ever decide to go to a Border again, it will definitely not be in Saugus, that's all Im saying!!! read more

I want to start that I used to LOVE Border Café. I've been going there for years. So, here's my story. I stopped in yesterday to get my usual, the Steak Chimuchurri. The bartenders always recognize me and said hello, and when I ordered, the way I ALWAYS have: No rice & beams, just the steak with some cheese melted on the top and the two sauces on the side, I was told I couldn't do that. No substitutions. I said I'd pay for the cheese, I have no problem with that. I was told that ownership didn't want anyone changing the way the food is identified on the menu. The manager came over, and, I honestly don't know how he could say this with a straight face, we don't have a recipe for steak with melted cheese on top, so we can't make that for you. I can bring it to you on the side. Well, that kind of defeats the whole melted on top thing. Anyway, I said, you're joking and he reiterated what the bar staff said about ownership ONLY accepting orders as they are on the menu. NO SUBSTITUTIONS. The lady next to me ordered her lunch and didn't want any rice & beans but would have liked more of the salad instead that's already on the plate, and was also told NOPE! Can't do that, no substitutions. We politely paid our drink (singular) tab and both told the manager he lost two regular customers and he said he was sorry to hear that. I hope they go under. What a ridiculous statement. The people that are going to suffer are the poor kids that wait on these people and say, no, we can't give you what you want. There are plenty of restaurants that will put cheese on something and that's where I went. Bye bye Border Café, I hope ownership likes their decisions when more people walk out. read more

I went there today with my wife. The older brunette hostess Joanne told us it would be about 25 min. wait. Okay we decided to wait... and wait... and wait, now we understand that sometimes you have to do that however we do not expect this. After a while it looks like some people that were there after us were getting in before us and they seemed somewhat friendly to the hostess Joanne. Now this we know, two of Joann's friends come in, how do we know this, by the hello and the personal talk between them, you realize that we are only a couple of feet from them. In only a few minuets guess what, Joann's friends table pager goes off and off they go to their table, while we waited for over 45 minuets. We approach the older brunette Joanne and ask her what was up with that and we get a lame excuse that she clearly made up to shut us up. Needless to say we were both pissed to the point where we could only leave but that's not the end. On the way home my wife decides to call and complain only to get, you guessed it... the older brunette Joanne. My wife asks to speak to a manager, Joanne puts the phone down on the table (we hear the bar noise over the phone) and continue to wait yet again, for just about 5 minuets until someone picks up the phone, someone that wasn't the manager, finally we did get the manager and told him our complaint. Now there are many restaurants on Rte. 1 but we will never go to Border again however we just want to warn you that unless you're on Joann's buddy list prepare to do some waiting. read more

I used to love this place. Been coming here for years and never had a bad experience until tonight. Started with a server elbowing me and almost spilling a hot plate of shrimp on me then pretending she didn't know what I was talking about when I brought it to her attention. Then our order came out messed up and we were told by the manager, Carla Mehilli, it would be comped if we stayed. Despite being in a rush and skeptical that the food would be any better, she convinced us to stay and we ate our meal (better the second time but still not what I've been used to eating here for years). When we got the bill we discovered that were not comped for the meal. We would not have stayed, let alone ordered an extra drink that wasn't in our budget, if the manager, Carla had not lied to us about the free meal she promised us. I'm very disappointed and I will never be back. I will miss the way it used to be. Not sure if it's under new management or what but it was one of the worst eating experiences I've ever had. However our server, Amy was amazing and I felt bad that her boss was so rude to us..if the boss treats customers so poorly I can only imagine how she treats her employees. read more

Amazing Service by Samantha at Border Café! We recently had my sister's rehearsal dinner at Border Café in Saugus, and it was an absolutely wonderful experience, thanks to our server, Samantha. From the moment we arrived, she made us feel welcomed and went above and beyond to ensure the evening was special. Samantha was incredibly attentive, making sure that every drink was refilled promptly and that all our food arrived perfectly timed. Her warm personality and professionalism stood out as she handled our large group with ease, never missing a beat. Not only did she remember every order flawlessly, but she also brought an extra touch of kindness and care, which made the evening all the more memorable for my sister and the entire wedding party. I'm honestly shocked and appalled by the treatment we received at this restaurant - by the manager. The night started off fine, but by 9 pm, we were told that it was the last call for both drinks and food. We ordered our last round of drinks and asked for the check to settle the bill. However, around 9:45 pm, as we were getting ready to leave, the manager, Kaitlyn Curb, came over and started literally screaming at us, demanding that we leave the restaurant immediately. I've never witnessed such an emotional outburst from a person before. Her aggressive behavior and yelling left us all feeling uncomfortable and honestly, scared. This restaurant was once my favorite spot, where I frequently went with friends and family, but after this experience, it will no longer be on our list. I highly suggest that the management provide some training in basic courtesy and emotional control for their staff, especially the manager. It would make a world of difference. read more

UPDATE: The blue margaritas mentioned in my original review below are no longer offered. This is super disappointing as they were a favorite for myself and also the friends I dine there with on a regular basis. Border, bring back the blue margarita!! I'll still come for the food, but I am forever missing my blue margarita fix! This place is great, never had a bad meal or spent too much. The pastelitos are amazing and the blue margaritas are to die for. I always leave full and happy for under $20. Not good if you're looking for something quiet as even during the weeks it's VERY busy and loud. On the weekends, be prepared to wait usually 20-45 minutes for a table. If you don't mind that, it's perfect for great food and drinks at a great price. read more

Really good food, generous portion and extremely reasonable price. A lot of their entree are only $8-10 includes sides and sometimes I don't want the sides they include with a particular dish and I get to substitue with a nice seasoned-grilled vegetables. Their 'blacked' chicken, swordfish is amazing. Their vegetarian options are countless and I recommend Vegetable Jambalaya which has so much fresh veggies like cauliflower, zuchhinni, broccoli. I love the Guocho Chicken with a fresh basil-garlic-olive oil sauce on the side and they have the BEST French fries, period. I never had a bad meal at the Border cafe, and if I have to say where they can improve -- it would be a better choice of mixed drinks and better music(or acoustic). read more

After coming here for about the 15th time this year, I have finally got a compentent server named Sergio to get my order correct & to the way I can actually eat my food. I hate when all of my toppings to my fajitas are mixed together. I've asked numerous times for my chicken not to be loaed with spices because I can't even bear to eat them when they're like that. I finally got them tonight where I can eat them and I'm excited!! Good is great when you get it the way you order it!!! I think the serving sizes are a little small for the money you pay. I really like the food here, but I agree that it is always really, really busy and pretty noisy. If you can get past that, it's totally worth it. The food is great and they stuff you with fresh hot tortilla chips and salsa before you order. They'll even refill them for free! My favorite menu item is the black bean tostada salad. it's really fresh and delicious and this is pretty much all I'll order anymore because it's so good. They have a decent size menu and several vegetarian options and meals for kids, so it's a good place for anyone. read more

The food pretty good at Border Cafe. I got fish tacos. It was three very, very thin pieces of tilapia each on it's own flour tortilla with a half teaspoon of sauce and a thimble size drop of cabbage slaw. My husband said "that's your whole meal". The bartenders were nice enough and helpful with menu but I was getting the vibe that they didn't like each other, which made things awkward. The margaritas were pretty great though. I feel this is one of the best places to have dinner if you like the loud atmosphere. Personally i feel it allows for a good time when you can talk freely with your friends without having to worry about keeping down the noise. They have a great bar and the food is delicious. I love this place, I've been coming here since it first opened (I want to say late 1980s or early 1990s). The food is excellent quality and the menu is a nice mix of Tex-Mex & Cajun. The service is consistently good and the food is consistently well-prepared. In 25-30 years I've only had one order filled incorrectly, and even then it was a minor error (same dish, but with chicken instead of beef) and the error was promptly corrected. read more

The value is still above average, unless you're on a strict budget you're probably better off at temezcal in lynnfield or papa gayo in saugus. I typically get the fajita's which are awesome and I typically can't finish them. Came do the Border Cafe in Saugus tonight after probably 100 times and finally got something other than the chicken fajitas or a salad I got the Chicken Bandera with grilled veggies. So so so good! I've personally been to this establishment on more than one occasion, and would say that the overall experience was quite mediocre. The food was quite bland although some dishes were quite appealing. Stopped going here after the Feb & March 2016 poisoning & all the failed health inspections, not surprised at all about this cockroach, google "border cafe saugus" and read all the repeated failed violations. Not sure what it takes for some people to realize a dirty place so if you don't care, just keep eating there. read more
