They use only lactose free whole milk! When she served me through the p/u window, she made sure to encourage me to mix the drinks up a bit before tasting and reiterated that Bopomofo wants each customer to be happy, so they have a 100% guarantee. I appreciated that, but a quick couple of stirs and sips later and I was sending her an enthusiastic 2 thumbs up through the window. The added boba was fresh and chewy and perfect! The black sesame cookies & cream is HEAVEN! Such a treat! The brown sugar pudding milk tea was a perfect after lunch refresher! This is an order and go cafe, located on the 3rd floor of Ovation, facing the main courtyard. No tables inside and you are directed to wait for your order outside by the p/u window. I was excited to try this place, but the drink was a little disappointing. This was my first time trying a pear drink, the lychee pear blossom, but I only tasted pear and some bitterness but no lychee flavor. I ordered it at 25% sweetness but it was not sweet at all oops. They offer unique drinks like beet milk taro and unique food options. This location is their newest location to date. However, I found the quality of drinks and food from this location seemed lacking. They also have far more food options at the original location. Perhaps, it is because they are in their soft opening stages? I cannot comment on the service as I got it DoorDashed. 1. Honey Oat Blended Espresso (3/5) Love the concept of this drink, which combines oat milk, honey and 2 shots of espresso into a blended drink. However, it was way too sweet to be enjoyable. 2. Jin Xuan Oolong Milk Tea (3.5/5) This drink uses Bopomofo's own Jin Xuan oolong tea blend, which is listed to have a delicate floral aroma and a distinct, naturally milky flavor. I definitely tasted the strong tea flavor, but did not taste the floral aroma nor the milky flavor. It seemed watery and over-brewed as it had the bitterness of tea to it. The fresh taro topping was very good; truly fresh taro chunks with the right amount of sweetness to it, not the fake powdery stuff. 3. Egg Salad Bolo Foldover (3.5/5) Think Japanese egg sando, but instead of in a sandwich, the egg salad is served in Bolo bun (aka, pineapple - it's not actually pineapple flavored, just shaped like a pineapple). The egg salad is mixed with their house-made honey mustard mayo and topped off with chives and tomato relish. Sadly, the bolo (pineapple) bun was dry, but at least the egg salad filling part was good. Overall, it's a nice small snack/treat to try, but it's nothing super mind-blowing. 4. Ba-la Matcha (3.5/5) Matcha mixed with guava nectar and layered with lactose free milk. The guava nectar has a nice tropical flavor and was surprisingly not too sweet. The matcha part was so-so. I do wish I had visited one of the original locations first, but I was excited to stumble upon this one while checking out the LINE Store at the mall. The supervisor who helped us seemed to be rushing us. When my family member ordered the Strawberry Lychee drink, she rolled her hands and said, "Okay... The vibe I got was that the cashier and server just knows their drinks, like they knew what was good and the confidence that Bopo has quality stuff. So I was pretty excited to try. I got the dirty matcha...and it was good. It's not overly sweet and you can taste both the matchs and the coffee in the drink. My family ordered other drinks too and they liked it. Overheard while sipping my drink: "Boh poh moh foh. Mofo?!". There's no mofo here I assure you. It's "buh puh muh fuh," the Mandarin phonetic system mainly used in Taiwan to teach children Chinese characters. I kept that to myself though and resumed sipping my Black Sesame Matcha Latte (upgraded to L because it's never enough). The drink was smooth and full-bodied with the rich, nutty taste of black sesame paste. I was craving their famous grandma's braised pork belly rice bowl but there's no kitchen at this Bopomofo Cafe location. I guess we're not in San Gabriel anymore, Dorothy. So I ended up with the PEAR AND LYCHEE FRUIT TEA per his recommendations. I personally don't like lychee in drinks so I might be biased (I like the fresh fruit but I can't stand the canned, concentrate, etc version). The boba was not good at all. It was soft, mushy and some bits still had hard inner bits. I asked for less ice and half the cup was ice. I requested 25% sweetness and the cup tasted full of sugar. AMBIENCE: hahahaha there were folks prepped and ready to order until they met the service staff in which they left without ordering and with disgusted looks on their faces. Brightly lit. Modern decor. Nobody stayed which made me not want to stay so I can't say much. Located in West Hollywood / Ovation Hollywood building. Getting from point A to point B was slightly confusing with the numerous escalators and very slow elevators. Don't know if bopomofo validates parking because I utilized 4 hours of parking for $3 thanks to D&B (must spend minimum $15). Would I come back? 626 represent!! I've visited their OG San Gabriel and their Cerritos location, so it's pretty cool to see how they opened one up in Hollywood Ovation. I'm glad that they also VALIDATE here! They validate on orders $15+, which is like two large drinks. The shop is pretty small, it's basically just the concept of grab & go since there's not much dedicated seating around. It was pretty empty when I first ordered, which we got the Jinxuan Guave Oolong Tea, part of their Summer Menu. Luckily it didn't take too long, so service was pretty good here. Taste test, the tea overall is pretty nice! I thought it would be more of a 'cleansing' type of tea, but definitely something more fruity. I'm a fan of their San Gabriel location and this is a mini quick stop one if you want boba and you're in the area. Because of this, I wouldn't say this is somewhere you want to travel out of your way for. There 3 food options here. My boyfriend got his favorite drink, the Diet Sprola which is an espresso with diet Coke. Easy to make, he loves it, I think it tastes like gasoline, but it did the job. Very efficient and quick order to pick up timing. There's a painted boba photo op next to it. The cafe itself is super narrow and I feel like it's more to serve crowds for pick up than anything. This location is more of a small shop/order window setup--no full café vibes like their San Gabriel spot, but still convenient for a quick stop. If you're new to Bopomofo, you should know: this is not your typical boba shop. You won't find Thai tea or generic milk tea here. Instead, their menu features unique, house-crafted drinks that might seem intimidating at first--but are definitely worth trying. While we waited, we saw a few people look at the menu confused, ask if they had Thai tea boba, and walk away. Others asked for recommendations and gave the creative drinks a chance (which we always recommend!). We're frequent customers of the San Gabriel location and have our go-to orders. Personally I wouldn't come back for the food though. We tried their Hollywood exclusives. I was walking around Ovation Mall when I spotted Bopomofo Cafe on the second floor. I got so excited because I was researching Bopomofo Cafe locations and both were both far away from central LA. I was very thirsty so I was not looking into a milky drink nor a strong bitter drink, but BA-LA Matcha hit the spot. The matcha is strong, but not too strong as it's well balanced with the milk and guava flavor. I wanted to try another drink and was recommended the taro or the orange. I got the Orange Wang and it tasted like an orange creamsicle. Creamy but not too milky where my lactose intolerant will kick in. Both drinks were very refreshing. We finished both in one sitting right outside of the shop and wanted to order another! Beautiful view of the mall with chairs and tables outside.
