After seeing the stretchy ice cream videos online, I was excited to see one in Houston and even more excited to try it. I came into the shop with my boyfriend and while the shop wasn't completely empty, it wasn't busy either. We were not greeted and went to the check out the flavors ourselves. I watched as another person get the full spiel about what booza is and how the stretchy ice cream was made. I waited for our turn to be talked to and have our orders taken but that didn't actually happen. We eventually just ordered our ice cream and sat down in an attempt to marvel at the stretchiness. I really wasn't impressed by the ice cream overall. The ice cream tasted good, but nothing really too special to me. And while the stretchiness if fun to play with, the novelty wears off eventually. For the price we paid to have this, I would have found more joy in another dessert. Overall, the shop is clean and brings something different for you to try. Interesting that everyone says they are friendly but I guess you have to share their cultural background to receive this type of welcome. We are mixed, Black and Mexican, so we did not. We were given at best a lukewarm "hello" and it seemed like a task for them to serve us. Since we had never been there before and we'd never had "stretchy" ice cream, naturally we asked for a few samples. This was met with a snarky "I start charging after 24 samples" from the man that was helping us and the woman behind the counter chimed in as well stating she start to charge after 10 samples. We maybe had 6 total between the 2 of us. We proceeded to check out, took a seat and watched as several other customers were treated more friendly and warmly than us, again because they shared a common culture. Be more tolerant and culturally aware if you want others to frequent your business. But maybe you don't? Ice cream was okay with muted flavors, much different than what we are used to. The very first Middle Eastern style ice cream shop in Houston, Texas is owned and operated by the Palestinian-Christian Rukab family from Ramallah, West Bank, Palestine. I know for example, there are a lot of Iranian ice cream shops in Los Angeles. The Rukab family is famous back in Ramallah for Rukab's Creamery, established in 1941. For the last 4 years, they have also had an ice cream booth every year at the Houston Palestinian Festival and Houston Lebanese Festival. My grandmother when she was a teenager used to take the bus with her friends from her village Birzeit so they could have Rukab's ice cream in Ramallah and go to the cinema. I went to Booza late this past Friday night for their soft open with my husband and we were promptly greeted with great service from the family business of owner/employees. Eager to give out samples like a typical ice cream shop would, and explain the history of their shop to anyone who doesn't know. By the way, "Booza" means "ice cream in Arabic. They offer a range of flavors, including dairy free fruit flavors, so great for vegans and those lactose-intolerant. I didn't notice any sugar-free flavors for diabetics, but maybe there will be soon. Their ice cream is known for its unique stretchy texture, from the ingredient "mastic" or "Arabic gum". We chatted with the owner and found out he also owns the Houston chain Brookstreet BBQ, which my husband goes to often for lunch with his coworkers. I recommend the ice cream flavors ishta, strawberry, vanilla, almond with salted peanut, and mango(dairy free). The also have an espresso machine and offer espresso drinks(lattes, cappuccinos, etc), but I think they should also have Turkish or Arabic coffee too! We will definitely be back. Hopefully I will bring my 85 year old Teta (Grandma) so she can experience Rukab's ice cream once again, since she hasn't been to Ramallah in so long. Her favorite flavor is strawberry. read more

Our family didn't really like the ice cream. We tried 6 flavors, only pistachio was good. The place is extremely stinky from sanitizers that it's impossible to stay inside. To sit outside wasn't an option too - the owners were sitting outside and smoking non-stop. read more

On a whim as well as good reviews tried Booza today. They offered a nice asst of flavors including a handful of dairy free options. While it was good, it wasn't over the top, gotta have it again. The place was clean but we arrived at 345pm so not peak service. My only real complaint is that both employees were sitting on the patio at a table by the front door smoking. Upon entering Booza, the stench of cigarettes entered with us. If it wasn't for the great reviews we would have left due to the cigarette smell. Tried out Booza a few weeks ago and very glad we did. We're new to Houston and wanted a sweet treat after dinner so I did a quick google search and decided to give this place a try. Seems to be a family owned business which I really appreciated and every person serving the customers was extremely friendly and accommodating, especially with selecting flavors for some of my pick family members.
