This is an excellent service - pickups are never tardy, the buckets are always clean and are heavy-duty enough to prevent kitchen odors, plus it's a service that is fairly priced. We have loved watching our weekly trash dwindle to one small bag for a family of four - quite a feat, and thanks in no small part to Bootstrap! read more

Bootstrap is very reliable, easy and straight forward! If I wasn't moving, I would definitely continue my service. They've never missed a bucket. The bucket's seal well, you can't smell anything and the compost is lovely, it's great for your plants. Highly recommended if you would like to reduce your waste! It also made our trash level significantly lower (thus taking out the trash less). They're great! read more

Great service! I've used Bootstrap Compost on-and-off for a couple of years (off when we compost during the warm months). They provide superior customer service and communications. They also compost pretty much everything, which is awesome! I'm grateful for their service so we can minimize our adverse contributions to landfills while creating a usable product! read more

Basically Bootstrap simply (or not so simply) has its act together! Timely responses to concerns or questions, clean consistent on time bucket replacement, and they are very nice folks to deal with. love that they are so socially responsible and keep us up with amazing progress. Good Job!!! read more

I've been using Bootstrap for a couple of years and they are great: responsive and helpful and consistent. You get really nice compost back if you opt to. read more

Unfortunately the City of Boston still doesn't offer municipal composting like a lot of other metros in the US are starting to do, but enter Bootstrap. I've been with them for several years now and they've been amazing. The buckets are large and have locking lids to avoid odors and you can get soil back periodically if you're into gardening. It's incredible how much food waste can be diverted back rather than end up in a landfill and is very much a worthwhile investment in our planet. read more

Bootstrap makes composting sooo easy. Their bucket provides ample room for our 2-person household with bi-weekly pick-ups. Love that they provide a clean bucket at each pick-up so no need to clean/maintain your own compost bin. We keep the bucket under our sink and smell has not been an issue, and this way we don't have to worry about attracting rodents with an outdoor bin. They recently updated their website to make requesting an annual allotment of free compost super easy and flexible - great perk. Overall, great company and great service, highly recommend. read more

Bootstrap is great for several reasons. Great customer service, free compost, and partnerships with local businesses. If you have a problem (I've only had minor ones) they respond quickly. It's easy to sign up. The website is easy to navigate and get answers. Each month I get discounts from organizations they partner with, too. But, the best things about this compost company are that you can compost a wider range of materials than other compost companies, AND you get 6 FREE buckets of compost each year. Some of the other companies you have to pay for the compost. In the beginning of COVID they had to stop accepting buckets until they figured out how to do it safely. They offered extra buckets to those who stayed customers and so I got 12 FREE buckets!! And, they got their service going again pretty quickly. It sure seems like they care about their employees and their customers. read more

Fantastic service! No hassles - they drop off a bucket, you fill the bucket with foodstuffs, they pick it up. Once in a while, a carton of compost appears along with the bucket. They also help the community by donating compost. Overall, efficient service well worth the cost and reduces the guilt I have over throwing out food read more

Bootstrap is a great company. In addition to being responsive, with emails promptly returned with warmth and clear explanations, and to providing outstanding service, including biweekly delivery, which works great for a two-person household, they are committed to paying their full-time staff a living wage and health insurance. They also support community-building, donating to an annual food drive for the Greater Boston Food Bank and to environmental nonprofits. In return for your food scraps, you can also receive compost for your garden several times a year. It feels greats to finally be able to add leftovers to my kitchen compost bin knowing they are going to soil instead of waste, and to working with a great company. read more

Bootstrap Compost offers a super convenient, low-barrier-to-entry way to compost if backyard composting isn't an option, or if your city/neighborhood doesn't offer curbside pickup. Their customer service is also fantastic; they're very responsive. Although I stopped using Bootstrap only because the City of Cambridge offered a free alternative service, I have only great things to say about Bootstrap. read more

They offer a very reliable service. I'd certainly recommend. I've gotten the compost for my yard, and it's nice quality.

Bootstrap is an amazing service. I tried composting on my own for a few years and even though I was doing "everything right" I had continuing challenges with all kinds of rodents in each type of compost bin. Problem solved with Bootstrap- they provide the bucket, reliably pick it up and deliver a new bucket, along with quarterly compost for my garden, and any time I call or email them, the staff are all very responsive, friendly and receptive. If you don't live in a city that does organic pick up, try Bootstrap- it couldn't be easier. read more

We used bootstrap compost for our wedding. They were great and an affordable and sustainable way to dispose of waste. I would highly recommend using them for any event! read more

I have used Bootstrap for my composting needs for several years. I love the service for a variety of reasons. First, I grew up composting and it comes naturally to me. Next, I want my children to understand the importance of composting and to not underestimate the impact of food waste. Finally, we live in the city where food waste in regular trash contributes to the rampant rodent problem. As far as Bootstrap itself goes, they are providing a great service. Always reliable, on time, conscientious and easy to deal with. My children's school even uses Bootstrap now. Thumbs up read more

This is the second pick up composting service I've used. It's great - great customer service, always clean replacement buckets, never a missed pickup, reasonable rates, can compost almost everything. This has helped me be a better person interacting with the environment. read more

The Bootstrap team sends out prompt communications, transmitted great reminders, and had excellent educational materials for us when we signed up. Like a few others, we tried switching to City Compost, but their lack of communication and shifty service practice wasn't enough for us. We went back to Bootstrap, and we're glad we did! read more

After determining that my location did not meet their policy, the CEO spent the better part of the afternoon harassing me by email (though I have no idea why). Here's hoping they actually refund my deposit. read more

We had nothing but positive experiences with Bootstrap compost. I love seeing their bins around Boston. Friendly staff, good customer service, and a "home-grown, family" feel to the company. Unfortunately we moved away from Boston, but I would recommend Bootstrap to anyone who doesn't want to throw their food scraps in the trash! read more

I've used their services for years now. I'm scratching my head trying to remember any problems whatsoever - grasping at straws maybe they were a day late in pickup during a blizzard, but I'm not sure, I'm thinking aloud, and even if so, it would have been perfectly excusable. read more

I've only been a customer for a fairly short time (less than 2 months) but I have been singing Bootstrap's praises all over the place so far. I love being able to route my food scraps away from the landfill even though I live in a little apartment in the city. My trash doesn't smell anymore and I rarely have to take it out. I like the weekly reminder emails to make sure I leave my bucket on the curb. I've even got some of my neighbors throwing in their scraps. Great idea, and (so far) flawless execution. read more

I've used Bootstrap off and on since 2011 and they've always provided great service and been communicative when I needed to cancel for a while or clear up where the bucket goes. It's worth the expense to me to not have stinky garbage and be able to take plastic bags of it out much less often. read more

I think I've been a bootstrap customer for around three years. It's hard to remember because I feel like they have just seamless become part of my lifestyle. I love the ease, convenience, and happy conscience that comes with their service! I've had to change payment methods, hold service and make other misc requests and found them so chill and helpful. They have made fantastic presentations on composting for my daughter's school too! Composting rock stars I say! read more

One happy customer here! Been a customer for a couple of years now. It's so easy - just fill your bucket, leave it outside before work, come home, fresh bucket. They are also quick to reply if you are away and need to cancel a pick up. Besides being great for the environment they are a local company active in the community. Highly recommend signing up! read more

I'm loathe to give Bootstrap a mediocre review since I support composting 100%, but I have had so many pick-ups missed that it's a nice surprise to come home and find out that it's actually been picked up. Love that they make composting easy and it's important enough to me that I will continue to use Bootstrap unless a competitor presents itself, but the service needs to improve in consistency and reliability. read more

Such a great service! We used Bootstrap for 3.5 years, with biweekly pickup, which was perfect for our household of two people. We never had a problem. Despite going for two weeks, even in summer, our bucket never smelled or got any bugs. Bootstrap made the process super easy, and they were always friendly. The best part was receiving our twice annual allotment of a "pot of gold"compost. read more

Update - I'm still using Bootstrap and now my company is using their corporate service. Working with them is excellent!

Great service, friendly, good communication and reliable. A very cool and important service. Enjoy very much!

I love this service, especially since they've started taking dairy and meat. I throw every food scrap into my bin and they whisk it away weekly. I've been able to reduce my trash by about a bag a week. They're always very responsive and it's easy to get extras added on...like my jack-o-lanterns after Halloween or my burlap when I unwrap my shrubs in the spring. Also once I opened my new bin to find a t-shirt, which I now wear every night. xoxoxo! read more

DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY! This is a horrible company run by an unprofessional and abusive owner. I cancelled my service years ago - the service provided at the time was ok but it was not working for me so I chose to stop the service. I sent a check in for the amount on the invoice given to me when I cancelled. I checked in with the company to see if they received the check...they hadn't so I sent it again and sent an e-mail asking them to contact me if they did not receive it... I heard nothing from them until over a year later at which point I said as far as I knew, it was paid - however, if they believed it had not been than they should send me an invoice for the amount. They never did though they continued to harass me e-mailing, calling and texting often several times per day for months....with a simple request to pay an amount - no invoice, no explanation as to why I owed this money a year and a half later. When I finally did get an invoice it included service for after the date of cancellation so, I went back to the original invoice which it did appear that as they never cashed the check that it was still outstanding so I paid it. I sent an e-mail indicating that I had paid the original invoice; however, as the invoice provided included dates after I cancelled I would not be paying the remaining balance. They changed their tune slightly saying that they had been wrong about the total amount owed and yet I still owed $28. Followed by an e-mail that said that they would begin charging 14/day in late fees for service that I never received or agreed to pay for! This is when it escalated --the owner continued to send me harassing, insulting and abusive e-mails to the point that I have been forced to make a report with the AG's office. It is not on the customer to magically pay a bill - one must first get an invoice or at the very least an explanation as to what read more

It's a great idea, and we certainly support the environmental benefits of city folks composting, but Bootstrap's implementation is not so great. I guess they have so many customers that it's difficult to provide dependable, friendly service. Good on them, but we're going to try their competition. read more

Bootstrap is easy to use and I like that they had options for how often they picked up the compost. They never missed a pickup and made composting so simple. read more

I LOVE Bootstrap Compost! Composting with ease is a joy with Bootstrap. In our busy lives, we've opted to use Bootstrap services instead of maintaining a backyard compost system. Chopping and enjoying produce is made that much more wonderful being a Bootstrap composter, because my kids and I know that we are reusing and recycling our food waste in order to help make new soil. Diverting food waste from landfills -- and avoiding contributing to the harmful greenhouse gases coming from food-waste-in-landfills -- makes my day, everyday. It's tremendously gratifying, helping through composting. Bootstrap is great at communicating through e-mails, and their pick ups are on time, every week. The bucket is easy to move to the front porch on pick up days, and it's big enough for our family of six. I love advertising to our neighbors about the benefits and joys of composting with ease, as the large, attractive lettering on the bucket lets anyone who notices know, that Bootstrap Compost is the way to go. read more

I have been very thankful to find people to take my compost. Try as I might there is no way I compost myself. Too cold during Boston winters! I have been using BSC for 6 months now since the fall. They always come on the day specified (perhaps not as early as they claim) which has worked great for me. I like being able to use them alternate weeks. I have to see how much more difficult ... Or should I say malodorous thus may be come summertime. Weekly may seem a better option then. I can't speak to the reviews for difficulties canceling since I have been very happy! read more

I've always wanted to compost my food scraps but never wanted to get my hands dirty. Bootstrap Compost does all the "dirty" work (collecting the bag of scraps and turning it into nutrient-rich compost) and I receive a bucket of compost at the end of a quarter. Bootstrap's customer service is excellent. I love the pick-up reminder the day before my bucket is scheduled to be picked up. They have made composting SO EASY!!! read more

Phenomenal. Reliable service. Every two weeks a clean, non-smelly bucket is switched out for my full one. I have been using them for the past 8 months in Somerville and love the service! Well worth it, and their emails are relatively humorous to boot! read more
