I thought I could do a bit better. I found James G Grant and figured I'd give it a shot. It's a bit intimidating at first given the visuals-- heavy machinery everywhere, large piles of all different materials, etc. but folks were happy to help. This is one of the places where all of the commercial junk removal businesses bring their materials and then do a healthy up-charge for the convenience. I went in to the office, asked for what the process was and was told to drive on to the scale. Once the weight registered, I got a thumbs up and then followed the One Way signs to the dumping area for construction materials. I backed in, dumped everything, and then back to the scale. Drove through the scale again, another thumbs up, and then parked and went to the office for payment. The price was very reasonable. Only about $60. The entire process took maybe 15 minutes. I was very happy with the experience and highly recommend if people in the Boston area have to dispose of larger materials and have a means to transport them.

The truck drivers are friendly, and hard working. My main issue with them is their billing practices. They never tell you this, but they will charge $100 for a failed drop. If you need to tow parked cars, $100 an hour. If you tell them to come back after you have cleared the space, $100. They will just charge your card without another word, which is a very frustrating business practice.

I really like how they are locally owned, When I have a need to reach out to them about something I can talk to a real person, which makes life a lot easier. For example, today I had a building issue and needed to get the trash picked up a day early. I simply emailed Save that Stuff and they took care of the early pick up no problem. Another time, we forgot to put our trash outside and the truck driver came in and asked where the trash was. In today's day and age with lots of big national waste management companies, it's nice to have a local, friendly company like Save That Stuff here in the Boston area. I highly recommend them.

There's a "swap shop" of sorts just to your right as you arrive. Rules are, if you leave something, you can take something. Most people just take. Your garage-sale leftovers will find their way here and there are people of a certain nationality who will swoop them up and re-sell them at their stores state-wide.... It's expensive to be allowed to use this place - something like $175 per month for your car to be allowed in. But it's worth it so you can dump your stuff and forget about it. There's a lot of recycling going on here these days. Didn't use to have that. If you're one of those tree hugger types, you'll appreciate it. Separate places for old monitors and air conditioners, yard waste, metals, and donated clothing. Hours: Sunday Closed Monday Closed Tuesday 8:00am - 3:00pm Wednesday 8:00am - 3:00pm Thursday 12:00pm - 7:00pm Friday 8:00am - 3:00pm Saturday 8:00am - 4:00pm There is no municipal trash pickup in Winchester. The town operates a refuse transfer station and recycling center off Swanton Street on the edge of town. Residents currently pay $175 per family annually for a permit to deposit their trash at this spot, which is colloquially referred to as "the dump." The facility is actually a transfer station because trash is not disposed of at the site; rather the town pays to have it trucked away for incineration or dumping. Although it costs as much to operate the conveniently named "dump" as it would curb-side trash pickup, the Selectmen decided that the social interaction of citizens at the site outweighed the convenience of a more conventional trash service. Local political candidates even make occasional appearances at the dump on Saturdays, shaking voters' hands and handing out literature.

The transfer station is well worth the money. You can just put all of your recyclables in a few bins mixed together (paper, small metals, glass, tin, magazines, newspapers, bottled water, etc. in one or two bins and just dump it in. It used to be time consuming to have to go to a separate bin for the different items. Now it's one stop recycling! Totally awesome. I just hope they never go to pay as you throw per bag of trash. That would be a bad idea and would lead to dumping in the fells and other woodland areas, and less recycling. Pay as you throw would be a bad idea I hope they keep the current system of the fees. which work well for the town as well. it basically comes down to around $15 a month for a whole family (1 car). - for the transfer station sticker. - $175 total They also have a hazardous waste day - where you can drop off your hazardous waste for disposal. the ABC - A better chance program which has inner city kids attending Winchester High School which is a great program does an annual bottle drive at the transfer station by the K of C hall every spring as well. You can drop off your leaves and bags of leaves, off to the right as you exit the "Dump" --pssst. don't call it dump,. the town select board wants people to call it the "Transfer station" because everything in Winchester has to be upscale and hip, even the town "Dump." :P The guys at the transfer station are all nice guys and will answer any questions. They work long hard hours to keep the transfer station operational. The Swap shop isn't bad, my only complaint is I wish people would care for it more. Stop throwing dirty diapers, used potties, and broken crap in the swap shop Also please think before you leave paper, old magazines, books etc. If it can be RECYCLED PLEASE RECYCLE it. I volunteer to keep the swap shop organized and have taken out at least five boxes full of stuff that could easily have been recycled. Please try to keep the swap shop organized and not just leave stuff everywhere ...it should be more like a flea market than a place to just dump stuff. A little more organization of the swap shop would go a long way. Why not hire some people to watch the swap shop and take stuff over to the recycle bins and such when people drop off obvious stuff that is in need of recycling. Anyway the overall concept of the swap shop is awesome but it would be nice if the townspeople cared for it more. I hope they dont end up closing it down due to abuse. Overall the transfer station is a great place. Its open later on Thursdays. So if you want to beat the Saturday rush go on Thursday. I never go on Saturday because its always too crazy . They could use a smart traffic light on Swanton Street which would hep slow fast high speed traffic on the road there. as well either that or a 3 way stop sign.. Overall the "Dump" is a good place. oops I meant "transfer station.." No one tell the selectmen I called it a dump okay? XD

Don't trust them. They're a scam business. Highly recommend weigh your stuff at home prior to coming to them and weigh in "your own bins" not theirs. Otherwise you're at high risk of falling into their scam. Avoid them.

We live about 30 minutes away, so it's a little bit of a hassle getting there... There is generally a line of trucks out front, but it moves quickly. Once there, if your materials are sorted, it will make it easier for everyone involved and for them to pay you cash. We went this morning and my husband was hoping for around $75 for our truck full of metal. We were pleasantly surprised when the grand total came to just under $240. Obviously if you clean and separate your copper pipes, you're going to get more than if they are lumped together with other materials. They even took a whole bin full of random cables and cords that I probably would've thrown in the trash had my husband not set them aside. We will continue to use this business for years to come.

Scrap it was the closest yard to me and it looked like it had a pretty good review so I decided to load my car and drive over to see how much I can get. The entrance to the scrap yard is on a street with actually other scrap yards. The entrance is highly visible and all you have to do is actually drive in and they have someone to help direct you to the right location to stop. They can pretty much tell if you need help so they walked right up to my window asked a few questions and had me popped the trunk so that they can take a magnet and start checking out my metal scrap. He identified which pile goes where and told me where to park the car but he first had me drive over the weight scale, to take the initial weight. He then basically told me to park in front of one pile unload, came back to weigh in again and then went to the second pile unload and came back to weigh in again. He printed me a receipt to bring to the pay office. I also had a big box of miscellaneous scrap metal, which he said I can just put inside a bin and cart it into the facility for a manual inspection. Overall, it was actually a pretty easy process. The workers they were actually very professional courteous and they were not condescending at all like they knew I was not familiar with the process and just guided me the whole way. Definitely will come back again when I accumulate another pile of metal junk.

But that's exactly what happens here. People do the right thing, and it helps the town and the environment. Also, there's no city trash pickup in Wellesley, so if you don't use this facility, you have to pay for private home service. You can also dispose of household and construction and garden waste, paint once a month, and there's a sort of "swap" area for old toys and other small items, like a yard sale, but free. There's also a book exchange. Be careful, it can be dangerous for kids with all the glass and plastic and cars around. Open to Wellesley residents with the appropriate car sticker.

But in the end, the extra work and expenses we incurred, including renting furniture to cover for late items, and then having to pay for items that were 3 months late and we no longer wanted because we had already purchased replacements from a new vendor, helped us re-learn, you get what you pay for. If you roll the dice and do business with this firm, make sure you have a delivery commitment date that allows you to cancel with no penalty ... but I recommend going elsewhere.
