Wonderful people and very knowledgeable. Appreciate all the advice in a cornfusing world of dog food. Excellent experience.

Wholesome Pet Essentials

(30 reviews)

Fair warning, this is a long review, but if you're looking for a quality pet supply store and…read moreyou're on the fence, please read the full review. I'm embarrassed to say that I've lived in Ankeny for 2 years and hadn't found Wholesome Pet Essentials sooner. I told them that when I was in the store too! What a gem. This is exactly what every small town or neighborhood needs. Sure we have a big box pet supply store to shop at, but that's not what most enlightened, wise, local-loving, conscientious pet owners want. Some would consider me intense, and admittedly, I have very high standards. When it comes to anything for my dog, only the best will do. Wholesome Pet Essentials has the best! I found Wholesome Pet Essentials because I had been making my dog's food at home for the last few months, but just in the previous couple of days, she started eating dirt from my houseplants. After a quick search on the internet, I gathered that she was likely missing something from her diet. So even though I had been having decent success making her food from scratch, I figured if I messed it up this one time, it was time to hand it back to the professionals. I think I searched for "fresh dog food" or something. Unfortunately, I do not remember. But Wholesome Pet Essentials came up in my search, so I poked around their website a little bit, and I found a brand of raw food that I hadn't tried before and ordered online to pick up in-store later. When I came in to get the food, I browsed around. I saw some happy pups getting groomed in the back. The selection for both cats and dogs is astonishing! An employee asked if I was looking for anything in particular. I told her I wasn't sure how to explain what I was looking for, but I told her my dog had recently taken to eating dirt, and the employee knew what my dog needed! She knew she was missing some essential nutrients, and she suggested a small pouch of Flora4, which is a raw food topper that I hadn't heard of, but I'm so glad the employee suggested it. It has been 3 days since my visit to Wholesome Pet Essentials, and my dog stopped eating dirt, and she loves the new food! Shifting gears a bit. I'm pretty sure the woman who fetched my online order for me (not the same person who suggested the Flora4) is an owner, and she mentioned that they are expanding into the vacant space next door. The Textbook Outlet moved, and Wholesome Pet Essentials will be taking over that space. I am so excited for them, and I am thrilled that I found them! This is now my go-to spot for anything my dog needs. If you made it to the end of this review, you must really love your pet, too, because I know this is quite long, but I can't help it; I have lots of lovely things to say about the knowledgable and friendly people of Wholesome Pet Essentials!

This is actually how I ended up there, and I left with some goodies and a resolve to adopt another puppy from Hope Animal Rescue. I HIGHLY recommend for anyone in Ankeny with cats, dogs to get your stuff here! Also, they have a DIY bathing station. Sweet!

Thankfully these reviews have not deterred people from coming here because they are always busy. The services I've used so far are: 1) Grooming- They have great groomers and they always take good care of my pup who is 3.5 pounds and can get squirmish when he gets his nails trimmed. I tried to do it myself and it was too difficult so I appreciate their staff doing it for me. They also were able to accommodate by request for a no scent shampoo for my pups bath. The yappy hours they offer at $5 off are the best! 2) Pet Training- Allison is a fantastic trainer. She taught the 6 week puppy class and she was so friendly, patient and understanding. My schedule made it difficult to attend all 6 sessions and she was so accommodating to reschedule us into a session so that we could continue the lessons without major disruption. The training also affords my pup extra opportunities to socialize and the extra distractions from the other pups help to put my dog in more of a real world environment where he has to learn to listen to me with distractions. In the puppy/beginner class we learned verbal and hand signal cues for: sit, focus, touch, click to calm, loose leash walk (lets go, this way), down (lay down), shake (or paw), sit-down-sit, sit-touch-halter, leave it, wait, come when called, greet when all feet are on the ground, and much more. The other trainer Lisa is super nice and always willing to give me feedback on how my pup did during the day at day care. 3) Petshotel- I needed to board my pup for 11 days. I called ahead of time to make sure I had all the required vaccinations before his stay. I like that they require vaccination of all the dogs that stay here. The staff here did a fantastic job with taking care of my pup. I was able to get photos of him during his stay since he was staying such a long time. One of the photos was nicely photographed and even displayed his name. I loved it so much I got it developed so I could post it on my wall. My pup never got kennel cough or any other viruses from staying at Petshotel I felt my dog was better behaved after his Petshotel stay because he was better socialized (with people), exhausted (from all the fun), and stopped his constant whining (which really bothered me but I couldn't figure out how to stop it). I would not hesitate to bring him to Petshotel again. 4) Doggie Day Camp- I was worried my dog was not getting enough socialization with people and other dogs. I didn't want him turning into a lap dog and have separation anxiety issues so I enrolled him in day camp. Again, I am glad that dogs that play here must be vaccinated. Day camp was one of the best decisions I've made because my dog is now really confident and isn't scared of other dogs. The staff here went out of their way to watch over my dog on his first day to make sure he adjusted well to the other dogs. He is not only a small breed dog but was the runt of his litter (at 3.5 pounds) and staff went above and beyond to ensure my pup had a good experience with the other small breed dogs. My pup excelled from this experience and had so much fun. He came back exhausted and more well mannered (in my opinion). I like how they can feed him lunch (with my food from home) while he is at camp so he is not starving throughout the day. I also really appreciate the late hours the day camp stays open so I don't need to rush over after work.

The owner didn't care sent me a note 7 days later and put the disclaimer in my face. She sent me the disclaimer that I signed and said this can happen if a dog goes longer than 6 to 8 weeks without a haircut this is unacceptable. It's one thing to make a mistake, but it's another one not to admit it. Thank you for your delayed response. 1.) She did not have any issues before her grooming appointment. 2.) Vet sheet attached. They said she has wounds from being buzzed in two places under her butt and tail. As we knew. Her tail $ butt was red, inflamed, chunks out of her skin and miserable all week. They said her glands were also irritated from it and expressed them while we were there. 3.) She now has: Some medicated wipes B. A prescription cream C. two pain & inflammation pill prescriptions : Gabapentin & Carprifen for cuts on her bottom & under her tail. 4.) She has stayed in her kennel without wanting to come out for 6 days. 5.) For the last 7 days she has been shaking, twitching, sleeping and not wanting to see any of our family members and needs help eating & drinking. I'd watch the part of the tape when they are grooming her underside, butt & tail. She is red, raw under there and goes bananas when we apply the cream to the wounds. They didn't let me watch the tape, nor care if I brought her in to show them. "No comments." If you'd like me to bring her in to further show you, I'd be happy to. This definitely happened at Shaggy Chic by her groomer(s). Please refund our visit. This is unacceptable. Or pay our vet bill, reimbursed to us. $123

I simply had to come here today and share what I experienced with Bone-A- Patreat. I am immunodeficient, so this whole COVID-19 situation is scary for me, and I am doing my best to social distance. I was floored when I heard what the folks at Bone-A-Patreat are doing during this time. They are delivering orders of dog food, free of charge, to those people who cannot leave their homes during this time, instead of having them come in and risk exposure. It's things like this that show the dedication to their customers that will have me as a repeat customer for as long as I live in the area. Aside from their phenomenal customer service, their food is fantastic for your dogs, their treat section is diverse and keeps dogs guessing and their toy area- let me just tell you. My dog, Sadie probably has a good 20 toys from in there and enjoys them all. Bone-A-Patreat will always have an amazing selection of products, but will also be here treating their customers like good neighbors. I'm lucky to call myself a neighbor of theirs, here in Beaverdale.

I looked for a product and the sales person said they have never had that item. But I think I got it there originally. Then the sales people behind the desk at waukee seem to ask one guy all the questions. He seems overwhelmed. The last time I went in I told them it was so stressful I wasnt sure I would be back. Then I was told that the company-name-and image of original owners was sold and they were having issues with the computer system. So no longer a shop local store. So sad.
