This was my second visit here. I knew more of what I wanted this time. They have the best selection of freeze dried treats for my babies. I hit the clearance shelf right inside the door and got some unique food for my dog to try and then went and snagged the healthy dried fish treats for my cat. They have a points program so don't forget to get signed up. I got all done and then found duck wings on the counter. The woman said her older dog eats then with no problem. Perfect. I bought a couple and was all set. Both times I've been here they are very helpful and kind. There is grooming in the back for your pretty pooch. I'm embarrassed to say that I've lived in Ankeny for 2 years and hadn't found Wholesome Pet Essentials sooner. I told them that when I was in the store too! What a gem. This is exactly what every small town or neighborhood needs. Sure we have a big box pet supply store to shop at, but that's not what most enlightened, wise, local-loving, conscientious pet owners want. Some would consider me intense, and admittedly, I have very high standards. When it comes to anything for my dog, only the best will do. Wholesome Pet Essentials has the best! I found Wholesome Pet Essentials because I had been making my dog's food at home for the last few months, but just in the previous couple of days, she started eating dirt from my houseplants. After a quick search on the internet, I gathered that she was likely missing something from her diet. So even though I had been having decent success making her food from scratch, I figured if I messed it up this one time, it was time to hand it back to the professionals. I think I searched for "fresh dog food" or something. Unfortunately, I do not remember. But Wholesome Pet Essentials came up in my search, so I poked around their website a little bit, and I found a brand of raw food that I hadn't tried before and ordered online to pick up in-store later. When I came in to get the food, I browsed around. I saw some happy pups getting groomed in the back. The selection for both cats and dogs is astonishing! An employee asked if I was looking for anything in particular. I told her I wasn't sure how to explain what I was looking for, but I told her my dog had recently taken to eating dirt, and the employee knew what my dog needed! She knew she was missing some essential nutrients, and she suggested a small pouch of Flora4, which is a raw food topper that I hadn't heard of, but I'm so glad the employee suggested it. It has been 3 days since my visit to Wholesome Pet Essentials, and my dog stopped eating dirt, and she loves the new food! Shifting gears a bit. I'm pretty sure the woman who fetched my online order for me (not the same person who suggested the Flora4) is an owner, and she mentioned that they are expanding into the vacant space next door. The Textbook Outlet moved, and Wholesome Pet Essentials will be taking over that space. I am so excited for them, and I am thrilled that I found them! This is now my go-to spot for anything my dog needs. Oakley is a 5 month old Golden Doodle, he had his first grooming a couple weeks ago and it turned out amazing! I was worried because you hear of Doodles getting shaved and I didn't want Oakley shaved. I showed the groomer a photo and when I picked up Oakley he looked just like the photo! Prepare yourself for a bit of a book but for those of us who appreciate an honest and thorough review will be grateful for the read.. First, the staff are incredibly knowledgeable and kind, taking the time to listen to your needs, explain products, and offer suggestions, all with your pets best interest in mind, not making a sale. Second, the products in the store are top notch. They carry only the best natural products, so much so that I feel safe giving my baby boy Frankie, anything and everything in the store. Third, the prices are more than reasonable and in most cases less than those delivery pet services, and that's saying something. Now- let me tell you a bit about some products I've gotten from WPE that I wouldn't have known about without the staff's knowledgeable assistance! Plaque Off - I cannot day enough amazing things about this product. It is a dry powder type product that you sprinkle on your pets food (dog or cat!) and it changes their saliva to help break down the plaque on their teeth! What?! I know, amazing. My only regret with purchasing this product is not getting before and after pics! Frankie had just the beginning of tartar on his back molars and it has disappeared in mere weeks of using this. 3 of my friends have also gotten this for their dogs after hearing me rave about it and all of our pets love the taste...even Frank, who can be a picky one! This product is so ridiculously cost effective that it doesn't seem right, thinking about what you'll save in a trip to the puppy dentist makes me think this product should be 10x the price that it is! Earthbath Grooming Foam Cat Shampoo - oh my word. Cat shampoo. Seriously. May not be something those of you need for your younger kitties but my Casper will be 20 in June and he's not as able to bathe as he once was. Using this foam shampoo combined with the Kong kitty rubber brush fluffed him up like a baby lion. Absolutely incredible! Earth Animal No Hide "The Feast" Chew, Large - I will start by telling you that my Frankie is a German Shepherd/Lab mix at just under 60 pounds and an aggressive chewer. Like hollow out a huge split elk antler in an evening. This chew has lasted thru an hour of constant chewing and there's barely a dent in one of the ends. Are you joking me?! The toy selection is second to none, with babies of all shapes and sizes for pups and kitties! There's rough and tough toys, snuggle toys, balls, floaty toys, just so many toys! One of my favorite things about WPE is their Canada Pooch selection of outerwear and harnesses for all sizes of dogs but mostly because they actually carry outerwear for larger dogs! Big dogs with thin fur absolutely need coats too!! Frankie has numerous winter coats, a spring jacket, and the most adorable raincoat! They are made extremely well and stand up to everyday wear! Lastly, they have sales, all.the.time. which is vital to those of us crazy pet parents that spoil our babies to the point of extreme craziness. Like we need our own support groups but we'd end up talking about our pets and buying more stuff! We have taken our 2 bichons there twice now for grooming. Cathy does a great job and really listens how we want them groomed. We started buying treats there. They love the turkey and cranberry. The store even was able to order a bigger bag for us. We just started them on some new grain free food and they love it. People are friendly and prices are reasonable compared to any other pet place we have been. Plus the stuff they sell is good for our fur babies. We have been customers for about 1 year and just love this business. They have a ton of high quality and hard-to-find pet food, treats, and supplements; and they're always willing to help you find the best solution for your pet. Also, I think their products are really reasonably priced compared to the big-box pet stores. We take our dog there during the winter for a weekly 'self-wash', and the tubs are always well stocked, clean, and OPEN! The clerk is so nice and has a ton helpful information. He's able to recommend the right food/supplements for our dog's particular 'condition'. And he's just a good guy in general. For example, my car battery died outside the store tonight, and the clerk came out (with the new owner?) to help jump my car before I could even go back into the store to ask for help. Zen our GSD loves this place. They have the best toys that he cant destroy and did I mention that they have a self wash for grooming if you want to just get the funk off your pup after the dog park. I also had a custom leash made to my liking, for a very reasonable price. This is the only place I will go to get my food now too. I love this place, it is like Disney World for my Dog. I always leave with great natural treats and dog food. I have an Italian Greyhound so no real grooming is necessary, but the nail grind is awesome, quick and not too expensive. The staff are very knowledgeable and care about what is best for you and your pet. There is a good variety of natural dog foods and treats along with toys and dog accessories. I recommend this place to all of my friends who have pets. We recently took our dog to get groomed. After seeing the haircut they gave our dog, I would never take him back or recommend a friend to go and experience that. They also let us know that our dog was a " underweight and unhealthy", I'm sorry but do you have a vet on staff to tell you that?!
