I'm not sure why all the reviews for this PetSmart are so terrible because I have only high praises for this location and the staff. Thankfully these reviews have not deterred people from coming here because they are always busy. The services I've used so far are: 1) Grooming- They have great groomers and they always take good care of my pup who is 3.5 pounds and can get squirmish when he gets his nails trimmed. I tried to do it myself and it was too difficult so I appreciate their staff doing it for me. They also were able to accommodate by request for a no scent shampoo for my pups bath. The yappy hours they offer at $5 off are the best! 2) Pet Training- Allison is a fantastic trainer. She taught the 6 week puppy class and she was so friendly, patient and understanding. My schedule made it difficult to attend all 6 sessions and she was so accommodating to reschedule us into a session so that we could continue the lessons without major disruption. The training also affords my pup extra opportunities to socialize and the extra distractions from the other pups help to put my dog in more of a real world environment where he has to learn to listen to me with distractions. In the puppy/beginner class we learned verbal and hand signal cues for: sit, focus, touch, click to calm, loose leash walk (lets go, this way), down (lay down), shake (or paw), sit-down-sit, sit-touch-halter, leave it, wait, come when called, greet when all feet are on the ground, and much more. The other trainer Lisa is super nice and always willing to give me feedback on how my pup did during the day at day care. 3) Petshotel- I needed to board my pup for 11 days. I called ahead of time to make sure I had all the required vaccinations before his stay. I like that they require vaccination of all the dogs that stay here. The staff here did a fantastic job with taking care of my pup. I was able to get photos of him during his stay since he was staying such a long time. One of the photos was nicely photographed and even displayed his name. I loved it so much I got it developed so I could post it on my wall. My pup never got kennel cough or any other viruses from staying at Petshotel I felt my dog was better behaved after his Petshotel stay because he was better socialized (with people), exhausted (from all the fun), and stopped his constant whining (which really bothered me but I couldn't figure out how to stop it). I would not hesitate to bring him to Petshotel again. 4) Doggie Day Camp- I was worried my dog was not getting enough socialization with people and other dogs. I didn't want him turning into a lap dog and have separation anxiety issues so I enrolled him in day camp. Again, I am glad that dogs that play here must be vaccinated. Day camp was one of the best decisions I've made because my dog is now really confident and isn't scared of other dogs. The staff here went out of their way to watch over my dog on his first day to make sure he adjusted well to the other dogs. He is not only a small breed dog but was the runt of his litter (at 3.5 pounds) and staff went above and beyond to ensure my pup had a good experience with the other small breed dogs. My pup excelled from this experience and had so much fun. He came back exhausted and more well mannered (in my opinion). I like how they can feed him lunch (with my food from home) while he is at camp so he is not starving throughout the day. I also really appreciate the late hours the day camp stays open so I don't need to rush over after work. read more

Clive store has a serious problem with BOOKING ONLINE GROOMING. Twice On two different occasions, I booked online and an hour later they call back and say I booked a time NOT available. How is that? Do not use! We brought in our 2 dogs to stay at their Pet Hotel while we were on vacation. We bought the dogs a suite, with calming scent and white noise, and the ability for them to have their toys. Pet Smart did not give our dogs any of the amenities we paid for. They put two dogs weighing in at a combined 170lbs in a 3x5 kennel, and then called us and demanded we travel home because one of the dogs was "aggressive." Their actions riled up the dog. They failed to provide the services that were promised. They failed to rectify the situation. The hotel manager was particularly vial to use and lied that she had returned calls. We will never use them or that store again. read more

I'm very angry , we brought our dog for grooming on the 06/14/24 at 0900 at the Clive location in Des Moines IA. The groomer deep cut our dogs nails to where it was swollen, the right back leg is sore and swollen. Her ears have sores from cutting the hair too deep. We took her to the vet and she said they injured the dog so bad. Our dog has been very defensive and at times bites when you try to pet her. She never behaved like this before. I'm / we are very disappointed and annoyed. I think the groomer was new. We will not take our dog there ever again. Please don't let another dog go through this ever. read more

As usual everyone is short staffed, but I hate it when management or a senior staff person comes to help a cashier and doesn't help checking out and shortening the line. I brought my 6 yr old 17 lb dog in for grooming, I'm new to Iowa & I was told that people are so nice here. When I picked the dog up i held onto their leash because I left mine in the car. Back at the car I saw that the receipt was for $75! I phone to ask about it but hung up after 5 mins & I went in both to return their leash & to ask about what was listed as "Special Handling $10". That person looked over at an older woman at the other register who immediately jumped in as though looking for an argument. Like an old snarling dog she was heavy with nasty attitude and said that he was biting & they needed a second person to hold him. In 6 yrs no groomer had ever complained about biting before, but I didn't doubt her. I just said that I would have liked to know. She claimed not to understand what I meant. I told her that when I paid I would have liked to know about the charge & the fact that my dog was biting. Needless to say, I won't be going back, and I wasn't surprised to see so many 1* ratings. I will never use PetSmart again. I am going to Petco from here on out. 2 reasons why PetSmart not competitive: 1) The grooming salon uses an out of state company to book their appointments. The contractor who schedules salon appointments doesn't know Iowa law. You are not informed when booking your appointment to also bring proof of distemper vaccination. You are misinformed that rabies vaccine is the only proof you need to submit. 2) Pet Smart charges a full haircut, $40, and does not take into account small minor trims. At Petco you can get a face, tail or bottom trim for $10. PetSmart provides this service but at full haircut price. This is a ripoff. PetSmart is being beaten by Petco and they will lose more consumers if they don't change their policies. read more

We used to get our dogs groomed at PetSmart, and would also stop in for nail trims. They always got us in quickly, and did a really good job on grooming. This location is always busy, which can be a little worrisome when you can see the stress in their canine customers and groomers trying to fit in all of their appointments on time. We now take our dogs to get groomed at the vet, since our smallest dog developed IVDD and needs special attention that we're not sure PetSmart is best qualified for. The store itself is always busy and cramped, but the staff is usually attentive. Their prices are generally higher than other pet stores in town, but they have a better treats and natural bone selection than most. There is always someone to help with fish and small animals, but having experience in raising reptiles, their reptile setup makes me ill. Their animals are sickly, living in undersized, dirty glass containers, and we've seen multiple employees wrongly handle them when customers demand to hold them. It's disheartening. From one dog owner and lover to another - if you have a dog that doesn't thrive in high-volume social situations, leave them at home when coming to this store. PetSmart somehow seems to be the hub of undertrained humans with barely leashed untrained dogs, or dozens of children demanding to play with the caged pets, and we've found that it is an incredibly stressful experience to bring the dogs in and let them walk around with such constant chaos. read more

I've never had issues taking my dog to any other petsmart or petco for a nail trim. The guy that checked in my dog was very anxious himself and made my dog feel anxious. My dog barked at him when he bent down to put a collar around his neck and he then chose to refuse to give him service because he didn't feel comfortable working with him. Maybe find a new line of work if you can't handle dogs being anxious around a stranger putting a collar on him. Go to a different petsmart. This one sucks. read more

Just came in quick for one item and I knew right where it was thanks to helpful signage and PetSmarts being laid out about the same. Store was clean and well cared for. Fish section was nice and well kept! Fish were not sick and were properly labeled in nice big tanks. And the cat adoption area right near the check out made me wish my apartment would allow cats!! Scheduled my dog to get groomed through their online reservation option. Arrived and they said they accidentally signed her up for a groomer and she was too big for this particular groomer. She's under 30 pounds which I had selected on the website when making her an appointment. "Best they could do" was offer 25% her grooming at another time. While I waited for them to figure out something, I watched the room and saw how gross the grooming area was kept. Fur everywhere from dogs that were no longer being groomed. An old broom used on the floor then immediately used to wipe off beds the dogs are on during their grooming. Decided to leave and will not be returning. read more

Today we have severed our relations with Pet Smart located at 11101 University Ave, Clive, Iowa. Made an appointment last week for our dog to be groomed before leaving on vacation. When I took our dog in they said we did not have an appointment and we must have made it at another place, I explained we have been coming here for years and as creatures of habit always go to the same place. Now normally we would not dump a business but we have NEVER received satisfactory service so this is the last straw. We have experienced bad cuts, lost appointments (this now being number two) and never calling when our dog's grooming was over. The person at the register doing check-ins was more interested in hiding behind Covid telling me I must leave than she was to admit to their incompetency and fixing the problem. read more

I love Pet Smart overall. It's my local go to store. They're great about helping you find what you need and have a good selection of pet products. Plus I am a big advocate of Banfield and their wellness plans. Wish returns went on your perks account or the app not a card (lost a big one recently). I have friends who swear by their groomers but I'm not a fan. It's dirty and my dog doesn't like being left alone clipped to a table. Which I get it, he's not the best trained dog but they're not patient. Tried trained for a couple private sessions and switched to a different trainer outside of Pet Smart, just wasn't impressed. My pet also went to boarding here one time. A friend was supposed to watch him while I was out of town and had a family emergency. He came back scared and shaking, his new harness was very dirty, and they groomed him without my permission. While grooming him they knicked his leg pretty bad. I'm assuming it was during grooming because he was fluffy to start Abd came home fully shaved. It looked terrible. I was very upset, paid for boarding but refused to pay for the unauthorized grooming. read more

I am very impressed. I had my two dogs groomed here and one is a German Shepherd who has terrible anxiety. I was very nervous the entire time she was there that she wasn't behaving but the ladies reassured me she did a good job and I am very impressed with the grooming both of my dogs received. I have taken them to other groomers in the past who have not done this well of a job and I've paid a lot more for it. It's my first year having a dog so I have nothing else to compare, but the nail trim service is always good, my dog is treated well and the price is affordable. I also really like the variety of toys, treats and dog food available, as well as clothes, shampoos and vitamins. It's good to see that they partner up some days with local shelters to help people adopt. I'll keep coming back! If I could give this ZERO stars I would. Not only is the place a mess, dirty and disorganized, the service is awful! I've brought my two dogs here for grooming for years and had no issues until recently. Apparently they have a new store manager and a new grooming salon manager and new staff. A lot of turn over. They cancelled one of my dogs appointments without telling me until I got there. They said I had to make an appointment with a certain groomer, because my dog is 11 years old and can't stand for 4 hours! That is ridiculous - what dog can stand for 4 hours no matter what the age is? I have always scheduled my dogs online for grooming. When I went online recently, I noticed they deleted one of my dogs information and are making me call before scheduling my other dog appointments. Their attitude's are snippy and rude and they do not care about their long time, loyal customers. I DO NOT RECOMMEND taking your dog here for grooming ever! read more

The salon portion of this facility is a joke. My friend went to take in her dog to have a full grooming service and after not being acknowledged for over 20 minutes, was told that they "normally do not work on rescues." As a company that has several stores that support the ARL, which is a rescue facility, this was appalling news. Why would you physically offer adoptions of rescue animals at your facility, then state that you do not offer service to them? Then to top it off, she was told that the vaccination paperwork she had provided did not have sufficient information because it didn't include the expiration date of her dog's vaccinations. Everything has been administered well within the year mark, and as a facility that has access to this information daily, I would assume that they would know that most vaccinations are good for at least a year - especially since the dog is only 13 months old. I have had good experiences at another PetSmart facility, but this experience definitely puts a new view on where I would consider taking my pets for grooming services. read more

Our dogs have been going to the Clive Petsmart grooming salon since age 10 weeks old, they are now 2 1/2 yrs old. They also go to the daycamp and they LOVE it there. The staff at day camp are very nice. But this person named Amy at the grooming salon is VERY rude and she charged us an extra $22 more for normal grooming on the dogs, WITHOUT letting us know ahead of time! When we told her if this is how things are going to be, charging more money without asking us, then we won't bring our dogs back. She said "That's fine ". REALLY??? That's fine!?? We took our boxers in to Petsmart in Clive, IA on 6/26 for their nails to be trimmed. Both our dogs WERE repeat customers until yesterday! The girl who works the register could only find 1 dog's shot records. We were treated as if our other dog was rabid & it was our fault the clerk couldn't call up the other dog's records. The woman beside her offered no advice on how to call up Athena's name another way. What happened to "Customer Service"? I arrived 11 minutes late for the puppy bath appointment and they refused to take my puppy. Seriously! I have always shopped at this store and the staffs are very friendly and helpful but this lady who refused to take my puppy for bath is pretty rude. She is definitely a liability for this store. This store lost me as a customer. They hold dog for 3-4 hours for bath and they don't want to admit dog who arrives 10 minutes late? I had my puppy there for a bath about a month ago and was told that I will receive a phone call by 8 pm. I brought my dog here to use the Petsmart hotel, which I do all the time in Arizona, and was not pleased. When I first arrived the two staffers just looked at me and after 5 minutes one of them came to help me and I had respinded to the same questions that I answered to on the phone when I made the reservation. Pets hotel is absolutely fabulous! Nothing beats dropping off your dog for the day and being able to run errands, etc without having to worry about his/her well-being. Just be sure to let them know in advance if you'll be cutting it close to the store closing time that evening as they call approximately 15 mins prior making sure you didn't forget your pet! My dog loves going to day camp here & always has a blast!! The grooming salon is also pretty great!! Clean and well laid out store overall as well. read more

To put it simply, it's a retail store who uses living things for profit. They have a good selection, but their employees are usually not well informed. I don't know if it's them or the fact that no one works there long (I've been there many times, and I rarely see the same employee twice except a select few. One cashier even mentioned to me that she was very sorry for the wait, "we have a lot of new employees who aren't being trained propperly. I wasn't even trained propperly, mostly because there was no one to do it.") That's a warning sign right there. Not only that, but the animals there are in care that I would consider neglect, as would anyone who knows the needs of the creatures they carry. They had two Ball Pythons in a cage not even long enough for them to stretch halfway out in long ways and so skinny I don't even thing it was a foot long. Ball pythons NEED a cool side and hot side of a cage to regulate body temperature propperly. It's advised to have AT LEAST 30 GALLONS for a SINGLE SNAKE. While being housed together can work, it causes stress (they aren't social animals like dogs or cats, having a roomy makes for worry about fighting for food and resources). They had 8 (allbiet young) leapard geckos in one cage only slightly larger than the snakes cage, they need 10 gallons to safely house ONE gecko and 5 gallons larger per extra gecko (and more than one male is a danger to them). That means they should be in a 50 gallon tank. They aren't even in HALF that. One had a shrunken tail like it was malnourished, likely from not being able to compete for food against the others. I overheard one gal talking about removing a chewed to death hamster from a cage because they had too many in one cage and they fought. I've seen a clearly sick parakeet crammed in a cage with 7 others, it was panting on the ground and missing feathers on the face as well as crusty on the nose (a sign of lung infection). This makes me sick and desperately sad. They are living creatures that are dependent on those caring for them to live safely and fully. I don't blame the employees, some of those there clearly work very hard and do what they can, but they don't get to choose how the animals are housed and distributed. It still just... It's heartbreaking. They are suffering so some big company can make money without a care in the world to what happens to the animals. Aside from that, it seems either all or nothing. You either go in and people check in with you to make sure you are finding everything, they go the extra mile to help and serve, or you go in and you don't exist. Honestly I prefer the latter, as I don't like being talked to or followed around constantly, but if I do need something (fish, an item from up high, price check etc) it sucks. Like I said though, I don't really blame the employees, I think it's a corporate thing. Maybe some of the managers are to blame too, as clearly someone is in charge of that store and ignores the blatant neglect and abuse of INNOCENT living beings in their care. But staying quiet is easier than risking your paycheck to stop murder! I can't go there anymore because it's too heartbreaking. I get needing a job but I don't see how ANYONE could work there for long without becoming depressed or worse, completely used to the neglect. It was hard for me to not get very upset with those working there about these things, but as I have worked in retail, I know it isn't the individual employees fault (they can't do a thing about it) but the company as a whole. Really sad. Really sick. They could EASILY just sell the supplies and food they have there (everything that isn't living) and still make plenty of money. read more

My daughters and I came to look into adoption since that's all she wanted for her birthday, we found the perfect little guy after going back and forth and everyone couldn't be happier. April is the lady who helped and she was amazing with my kids and super nice. Noah's ark is also a great place to adopt from. Pets are up to date on shots, chipped and fixed so you dont need to worry about doing all of that. Great prices to. read more

grooming service leaves a lot to be desired. Had nails trimmed on my dog and they cut back too much and my dog bled and then was bleeding in car and at home. This happens in grooming, but I watched the person doing it, and my dog was in nervous distress while she was trimming nails and instead of trying to calm my dog down, she just kept plowing along. This person has no business grooming or dealing with animals and shouldn't really be dealing with the public. I have nothing against petsmart but I wont be back to the grooming dept. read more

Walked in and as soon as they saw my puppy i got dirty looks. Went to get her nails done and they were bringing dogs in to get the same thing done and the dog before me eas neer there before and they took him. It was then my turn, i told her my puppies name and then she saw my puppy and automatically declined me because i didnt have the paper that proves she had rabies shots. She wears her rabies tags . ive been to other petsmarts and never needed them. I will never go to this store again. But this is to the customers on the weekend, don't be so disgusting in the bathroom. You can pick up paper towels after yourself, it won't kill you! When I had a meeting in Des Moines for a day, I arranged to have my 6 month old puppy at the Puppy Day Camp at the Clive PetSmart. I called ahead and was told all was arranged. On arrival I was concerned that the store was seemed dirty, compared to other PetSmart stores I have been in. At the end of the day the store was still grungy. For instance the entryway was awash in pet hair. The kenneling area, however was clean. We submitted his vaccination records and were told he was all set. However, when we returned to pick him up we were told that he had been kenneled alone all day because he had not been neutered. Again, he is 6 months old. Had I known that I would have made other arrangements. My complaint was that we were not informed. Finally, while the kenneling staff were business like, there was no friendliness from anyone. That, plus the lack of information beforehand, plus the lack of cleanliness gets this store a thumbs down. read more

We just took our dog in for the grooming. We were initially told it would take 3-4 hours. We went shopping then came back to find "they had a problem and they were letting her air dry. She wouldn't allow the blow dryer. That wasn't a problem, but they could have told us it was a problem by phone. When we came back they told us it would be another 3 hours, so we drove 30 minutes home only to get in the door and they called us saying she was done. We drove back, they were unable to trim her nails, she didn't allow it. Looking at another review it sounds familiar. read more
