Got my dogs groomed yesterday and had the basic bath package with low shed add on. The first impression was they did great because my girls coats were so soft and they smelled great. Got them home and my golden retriever has matts behind both ears that weren't brought to my attention by them or weren't taken care of by their groomers. You'd think if while bathing and brushing out a dog you find matted fur you'd talk with the owner or you'd work out the matted hair before sending them home. Have brought my girls her many many times and service has gone way down hill the last 3 times they've gone so likely will be looking for a new groomer. Service quality is going down but their prices sure aren't! $140+ for a basic bath package with low shed added for 2 medium/large dogs is getting too high for the quality office the service! read more

A little unclear on the pricing. Spending $300 for only 4 nights seemed pretty pricey to me. They emailed me a receipt so I was hoping that would clear it up but nope, it's a secret receipt that does not itemize the expenses. They do send a link to a nice report card, however it leaves a little to be desired. He doesn't always eat well especially at new places but I didn't get any food back so am I too assume he ate it all? Would be a nice addition to the report card. Today was our first grooming visit. I can't tell you how difficult it is to go to a new groomer after a bad experience at a different place- Kelly was fabulous! I also have to note that Kelly was finished with a full wonderful groom of Bear in 2 hours less time than our previous grooming place! She's really quite fabulous! I would've given this place 4 stars but after boarding my dog here I realized there were many red flags I shouldn't have ignored. When I picked my dog up, he was covered in feces. I had asked for a report card during the weekend he was boarding and didn't receive one. I was also only given back 4 out of 6 containers of food. I really questioned if he actually ate everything. Lastly, less than 24 hours after picking him up he developed kennel cough symptoms. At the vet, the vet STRONGLY suggested I do NOT come back here due to he had seem 4 cases out of this location in the last two weeks. I'm happy my dog socialized but his health and well-being outweighs socialization. read more

Not only do I absolutely love it here my dog does too! She's the biggest star from the moment she walks in to the minute I pick her up. The staff even greets her by name when we walk in! Everyone there is so kind and you can tell actually cares about the animals--a very important factor to me as this is my family we're talking about. The $25ish price rag for a day of daycare is worth it. My dog comes home exhausted and happy and very well cared for. I wouldn't go anywhere else for our boarding needs! read more

Loved this daycare! I was only in town for a month but I had my dog stay a few times. They were very knowledgeable about leash anxiety and allowed her to be evaluated without a leash. They give great report cards of the dogs behavior during their stay and offer add on baths so they are nice and clean upon return. Facilities were as clean as you can expect for a dog daycare. read more

This is the second time we've picking your shade for grooming at Bark Avenue West. First time was actually like $20 cheaper and they did a great job!! When I picked him up he couldn't wait long enough while I paid and he peed a lot on their floor which makes me wonder did they take him out to potty if he needed to? This time they did a good job but he has a lot of extra fur flying off of him!!??? I asked about boarding services and apparently they didn't have any papers at the desk??!! we're going to be gone for a week in July and we're considering using them for boarding but not now? I've been taking my 7 month old boxer here for about 1 month now and it's been a great experience. She goes to doggie daycare twice a week from 7am to 5pm while I work. It costs $24 per day and is WELL WORTH IT. If you have a active dog or hyper puppy, I strongly recommend doggie daycare. My girl is exhausted and ready to snuggle by the time I pick her up! She is a much better dog since going to Bark Avenue. Most mornings she is greeted by name by staff members. I feel like they really know her and are excited to see her arrive. I don't have any concerns for her safety or that she isn't being well cared for. Another great perk is that they have a large glass window that you can watch the dogs play through. Staff always appears super engaged and keeping an eye on everyone to be sure they play nice. Today I walked in to pick up my dog on one of the staff members was sitting in the floor with a literal dog pile sleeping on top of her! Dogs are great judges of character and they clearly felt comfortable and trusted the caregiver. There are only a few reasons I didn't give this place 5 stars. The first one is that my first day there wasn't informative and I'm still unsure about the schedule, set up, and what all goes on during the day. My puppies nails often appear clipped but, they never told me that was part of the daycare experience. It's a great service and I just feel they should play up all their extras! There was also a girl early on who didn't seem like she cared to be there and was much less friendly than the other staff members. I haven't seen her in a while so maybe they realized the front end wasn't her strong suit. The other thing I would love to see (that several competitors offer) is puppy cams. I would love to watch the puppies play for a little pick me up during a ruff (ha) work day! Overall, a great place. I am completely in love with the report cards I receive. I attached a few to share! I just called to try to reserve a spot for my dog. Online, it says prices start at $21.95 per night. The woman, Kit who answered my call let me know that the pricing starts at $27.95 per night. Fine. Then informs me that there are a bronze, silver or gold play package starting at $18.95 extra and that a minimum of the bronze had to be purchased alongside the nightly rate. All the while repeating the mantra of the company over and over like a zombie robot. $18.95 for throwing a toy for my dog? No. She tried to literally strong arm me into spending an arm and a leg over the phone. I hate when I try to call a local business for a service and they spew rhetoric and can't just talk to customers like real people. I don't care if they're better, they came off as 100% sleazy and aren't getting my business. read more

Kelly does a wonderful job with my 3 dogs who all need regular grooming. The dogs seem to enjoy the daycare aspect of Bark Avenue after their grooming as well. I think they take great care of my 3 fur babies. Front staff is extremely helpful and kind. read more

I took my dog Levi here for a 2nd time for grooming. I was upsold the VIP package which was to include nail dremeling, teeth brushed, a blueberry facial, and a surprise gift. Here are the things that happened... 1) I was told that they nicked Levi's ear, but that it was cleaned up and should be fine. 2) As we were walking to the car, I see that Levi is wearing someone else's collar. We go back in and they say that his collar was sent home on another dog. I could get another one and they would reimburse me. I didn't do that, as we have a few. 3) I notice that his nails were NOT dremeled and barely clipped. I sincerely doubt that any of the VIP items were completed. 4) Later the next day, my dog won't eat or drink. He is shivering. I call the vet and we go in the following day. Levi has an allergic reaction to the shampoo. (Allergy shot given). He has a double ear infection. (Ear medicine given). He has an anal gland issue that requires cleaning out and antibiotics. The vet clipped and dremeled Levi's nails. 5) I called Bark Avenue West and spoke with Troy. He told me to submit the vet bill and they would decide if any would be paid through their pet care warranty. 6) The next day, he calls me back and said that they would give me Levi's next groom free of charge and that Levi would be going to another, more experienced groomer, and that Troy would dremel Levi's nails when needed. I accepted that. 7) That night, my Levi started coughing and gagging up white foam. We went to the vet the next morning. He has kennel cough. On more antibiotics and a probiotic for his stomach. 8) I faxed THAT vet bill to Troy's attention and never got a call back. I've had dogs consistently since 2003. I grew up with dogs, my mom and sister have dogs, and I have never, until now, experienced kennel cough! Their "warranty" is bullshit. The groomer was very nice. Troy was very nice. But I do not recommend this place and wouldn't get suckered in on the VIP package that's for sure. I feel like the groomer should have told me that she noticed maybe that his ears were red or that his butt needed attention, nothing was said so then I feel like this was all due to allergy to whatever shampoo was used. It's been a rough week or 2!!! I have made another appointment at another groomer that comes highly recommended. read more

My dog goes there for Doggy Daycare, and it's incredible! The staff is super friendly and takes the time to know you and your dog. The first day of daycare is free, which is awesome for a trial. My dog gets a workout - by the time I pick him up after work, he's ready for bed! They also send out a "report card" after every visit, showing you pictures, telling you their demeanor throughout the day, and who their friends were for the day! So worth it. read more

My dog has been going there for almost 3 years. I drop her off at noon and normally pick her up by 5:00. I only take her once a week for 1/2 days so she can socialize and get exercise. The last few times I picked her up at 4:00pm, and the dogs, were in kennels in the day room. They don't close till 6:00pm. I expect to get more active time for the money I pay. I am not paying so she can sit in a kennel. When we got home, she was so thirsty that she drank over half her bowl of water. I can't say for certain when the dogs were kenneled. After reading many positive reviews on this grooming salon I decided to take my dog there for a bath and trim. On their website they post a package that includes not only a haircut and a nail trim but a hair trim for the feet face and butt. After I drive all the way to the salon and check in my dog, offer the correct vet records, etc. I am told that this package does not exist. After I look up their website on my phone and show them the package that I was hoping for they then tell me they do not have time to accommodate me for my appointment. I decided to cancel my appointment and only get a nail trim while we were there. You guys should really update your website to reflect the correct packages that you offer in your salon. I am completely desapointment and heart broken for the way BARK AVENUE AT WEST DES MOINES IS MANAGED. They up and ready to take your money first without giving the customer the opportunity to see the end results of their grooming and to examine your dog of any possible injury caused by their groomers. Also, the manager showed not concerned after, I let her know that my two Shitz Shush died after the injuries their groomers did during their grooming. The manager did not even apologized or showed any emotion of compassion or care. Even thought I reported the injuries at the reasonable time, they battle to own redponssbility for it...to take care of the vet bills. I strongly suggest the customers to check and take pictures right before the grooming services and TO DEMAND to examine their furry member of their family for any INJURY, not matter how small it may be, after the grooming services, SPECIALLY if THE pet is a SENIOR, before they pay for the grooming these and tip. It was not worth it to save lil bit money for the grooming and, if any thing, IT HAS BEEN GREATLY DEVASTATING experience. The only thing I can do to honor the death of my dogs is to share this and experience & hopefuly, prevent other pet and parent to go through this emotionally EXPENSIVE & DEVASTATING EXPERIENCE read more

We love having our dog go to Bark Ave West! They have the BEST groomers! The service is wonderful too and you can't beat $24 for a pup tired from playing all day. We haven't had to board our dog there yet but I would expect a similarly great experience from that too. I love getting my dog's report card at the end of each day. read more
