So let me take another tack and make sure that this is the place for you. First off, Mountain Meadow Resort isn't for everyone. If you can't be unplugged and off the grid, this place isn't for you. Seriously, there is no wi-fi, your smartphones are only useful as cameras because there is no cell signal, and the generator that provides electricity only runs from 6:30am to 11pm. Bookings typically go from Saturday to Saturday so if the prospect of not being able to check your texts, voicemail, e-mail and social media for a week gives you the heebee jeebees, then this place is not for you. Second, this place is remote. The resort is most definitely in the WILDerness. In the four years that I've gone I've come across black bears and been within spitting distance of a rattle snake, rattle going off, coiling and ready to strike. The nearest medical facility is 2 hours away by car. And that's not counting the fact that you could be half a dozen miles into a hike away from the resort and your parked car when you get injured. If that seems a bit too off the beaten track for you, then this place is not for you. ...Still reading? Then you must be adequately intrigued as to why people go and keep coming back to this wonderful place. And if the you're not scared off then you will likely fall in love with this place as I have. Read on if you want my attempt to add information you might be hoping to gleam from reading these reviews. This is a family run camp. Decades ago a group of families bought the place and ran it together. Their children now run the resort and while you're there you'll likely see the next generation starting to help out as well. Staff all have a direct connection to the resort via family, being visitors in years past themselves when they were younger, or being recruited by one of the first two categories. What that means is that your initial visit feels like you're an interloper at a family reunion, but on repeated trips you begin to feel that you too are part of the family, because you truly are. That sentiment permeates through and is felt not just by my wife and me but by my kids as well. I would love it if my kids worked here when they're older and if I could spend extended time helping out after I retire, whenever that is. Days can be spent on hikes, strenuous or relaxing. Obviously the former will reward you with amazing views. Unlike, say Yosemite, you could do your whole hike and never come across another group. If you do, it certainly will only be a handful. There are lakes to swim in and vistas to take in. The resort is positioned so that you can make a day hike where others will often have to backpack in and out. Sometimes you'll be tempted to backpack yourself and maybe stay over a night or two but what always draws me back is the food - homemade and delicious. Dinners are amazing. Lastly, the kids love it because of the independence and being outdoors. The "kids dinner" before the "adult one" is as much a highlight for the parents as it is the kids. More importantly my tech savvy kids being raised in the heart of Silicon Valley have no qualms with Mountain Meadow being a "screen free" place. And that alone makes our annual trip worth it.

It is a drive to get to, but once you're there you don't want to be anywhere else. We toured the venue, maybe a year or two ago and at the time they were only doing five weddings a year is what Margie said, but it seems like they've really ramped up weddings as more vendors are familiar with the location and from their Instagram. They also updated their website and it's really nice. They supply chairs and tables and helped tear down and clean them. Elizabeth (the facility coordinator) responded to my every text in a timely manner and answered all my questions and even double-checked on things for me, (they had rollaway beds and pack and plays for my friends flying in with children). I do think they could put up lights in the orchard permanently, we had to buy some to hang before the wedding, but they did have a ladder. Luckily Elizabeth mentioned it to me beforehand so we had a chance to buy lights at Costco because once you're up there there's really nowhere to go and you don't have service unless you're on the Wi-Fi. I really don't mind this though because I really wanted to be disconnected lol. They turned over the bridal cottage for us the night of our ceremony and reception and they put rose petals and made the bed look so fancy and gave us champagne and I thank you card. It was very sweet and special and I really appreciate them cleaning up everything. I know it was probably was very messy. I don't know if they will offer this in the future instead of but I would love to be able to just book the bridal cottage for future anniversaries instead of booking the entire home, we love the main home but it is too expensive for just a couple. Even just renting out a room would be super sick. I don't care if there are other people there. My husband's one request for our venue was to have a cigar bar, a lot of venues do not allow any form of smoking so it was great they have designated smoking areas. I would probably add smoking area signs but I get not wanting to impact the aesthetics of the space. We designed our rehearsal dinner around the venue. Very cool saloon, and it was such a fun place for us all to gather and play music and watch movies and have games going so that was very very special. When I needed a break I could go sit on the very comfortable couches in the living room. Also for anyone concerned, the venue is very modernized and I don't think we had a single thing we needed or would have wanted that they didn't have on site. Our guests staying on property could not believe how nice and maintained the house was. Pictures don't do it justice!

Anyways, the cabin was clean and everything you would need for a nice relaxing stay. My biggest qualm was that the hot water did not work so we were not able to take a shower (unless it was ice water cold). And the Internet did not work - not for browsing or streaming pleasure but simply for cell phone service in such a remote area. All in all, a decent spot to stay in the Shasta Lake area.

This year we unfortunately damaged the boat (entirely our fault), and the marina handled the situation professionally and was I think very fair and reasonable in the amount that it charged us to cover the necessary repairs. We also ordered a large caesar salad that we all split and the lettuce was warm like it was sitting in a window soaking up the sun, plate was not chilled and even if it was it couldn't have cooled down hot lettuce, salad was light on dressing , the halved petite romaine was very bitter, i've purchased this lettuce at costco a couple times and stopped buying it because the petit romaine tends to be very bitter, i love the consistency of the smaller denser heads of lettuce but the bitterness is unpleasant .....hopefully the chef is tasting his food and can see what he thinks. My wife ordered the pasta with shrimp and loved it! My dad had the rib eye and said it was pretty good but maybe not 57$ good. The pasta dishes were 10/10 amazing , reasonably priced and generous in size , the warm wine and salad is an easy fix, it was a nice treat after a week of camping and cooking to not have to , so highly recommend giving them a try for dinner during your stay!! Mountain scenery was incredible from the campground!! The pool was a little crowded at times but we enjoyed a couple hours of pool time both days. We've been going to railroad park resort since the 1990's and eating there every time we come through town - 2-3 times a year. They used to make a great steak, with a deep dark sauce with mashed potatoes and veggies. I recently ordered the steak - $58.00 - making it the most expensive entree in the area (including the high end places in Mccloud, etc) and it had no sear. was under cooked. Had no seasoning. No sauce. The potatoes were rubber and the veggies were gross. The pork chop was similarly under-cooked and had the same sides -so same feedback. I looked for a manager to talk to and couldn't find one. So I messaged them on facebook and they told me I could come by any time and talk to the cook. Where was the cook the night I was there? I was told there was no manager to talk to. I only eat their when vactioning and can't just pop in. I live 5 hours away. If they're going to raise their prices from $40 to $60 for a steak - they need to up their gave. Instead they dropped the ball. The food isn't worth it and they don't care.

I see a lot of reviews had a problem with cleanliness and honestly, we did walk in to a musty smelling cabin and dead, flying things all in the bathroom, but after doing a black light inspection of the mattress, I was reasonably assured that bedbugs would not be an issue. This is a major sanitation concern. IF the property thoroughly cleans and sanitizes the kitchenware between stays, this chore is an unnecessary burden on paying guests. If they do not reclean them, then the health and safety of incoming guests relies entirely on the honor system and the cleaning habits of previous occupants. It is incredibly unsettling to think the dishes we used may not have been professionally washed or sanitized. The cabin itself clearly got a "landlord special" French doors were stuck and wouldnt open. Had to call maintenance to get them fixed. The refrigerator and cabinet drawers overlap so tightly that opening the fridge makes the drawers to open, and vice versa. The fridge door is already dented, clearly from this problem. The blinds are old, broken, and don't close all the way. So we had to wake up with the sun every morning, spiderwebs in the ceiling corners throughout the cabin. For the price charged to stay here, guests should at least be guaranteed professional cleanliness. Unfortunately, this property missed the mark on all counts.

Room 10 in the tastefully restored midcentury motel was our choice because it offers arctic AC! Seriously, this small LG unit is quiet and effective! The two queen beds were perfect. We pushed them together to make a giant family bed for our two enormous beasts. Don't worry, we are seasoned travelers and brought king sheets to put on top for the dogs. The mattresses are memory foam! We love them as we have a tempurpedic at home. The train is far enough in the distant from this room that it's quite pleasant to hear the sound across the river. Make your coffee and stroll over to view Mount Shasta from the benches provided in the morning, but the really photo op is just after sunset when the mountain glows. Note, the pine tree sap will drip on your vehicle if you park in the designated spot for room 10. If you back in, it gets on the windshield. Nose first, not so much. We travel with windex and microfiber cloth, so we were prepared. What's nice is all the options for a stay at this resort. If you want a cabin with a hot tub it's available, or an Airstream, the have rows of them. It's a nice walk down to the botanical gardens and the river. This would be an ideal location for a group event. Many folks recommended coming back in the Fall, so hope to return again.
