Sigh. It's never a good sign when you pick it because it's the last place open. They gave us our soup dumplings eat in even though we said carry out. They were oversteamed or something...all of them had no soup in them. Then the soup was leaking out of the bottom of the bamboo steamer. We waited 30 minutes... they gave my partner the dumplings first. Then we waited longer... and instead of giving him the other part of his order (some steak bowl) they tried to give him dumplings again. Then the cashier was hesitant to give a refund when we didn't want to wait another however long for them to make the dish that they were supposed to have been making. Management trying to make more money by staying open late but not staffing appropriately. Two people to take orders from literally everyone walking in, and one person in the back making everything. It's not right.
Bold Dumplings is one of the many restaurants located at The Block - an Asian Food Hall. We were pretty hungry and wanted to sample a few things on the menu so we decided to order the Family Platter. Well, the name didn't lie - this meal is DEFINITELY for a family! The platter is probably enough food for 3-4 adults to be satisfied, with generous portion sizes and enough of each item that everyone can sample everything from the platter. Overall, the food was good, but we weren't expecting everything to be fried. Besides that, I would say Bold Dumplings is worth checking out and if you're coming with a big party then try the Family Platter.
The bold dumpling is inside the block of annandale. Love love their bao's! The pork is crispy and the sauce was perfect. The bao was soft and the meat fits perfectly. Great portion. Each portion comes with 3 baos and it works great as an apetizer! The service was quick! Not typically crowded until late night.
Would give this a 3.5 or 3.75 if I could. Went here yesterday around 7:15p. For a Sunday it was normal busy for The Block. Greeted promptly, and took about 15 minutes to be ready after ordering. They give you a buzzer so you know when to go back to the counter. I just ordered the 8 piece vegetarian dumplings for $12.99. I wish the menu had more details rather than just saying "vegetarian dumplings, 8 pc, steamed" to include details around the components of the filling - if the wrapping wasn't green I would have thought Jayne these were chicken dumplings bc I think there was tofu and the texture almost gave off ground chicken. I was expecting some veggies with a tiny bit of crunch after steaming like carrots or something maybe, but I believe it was tofu and cabbage. Nonetheless, the dumplings came out hot with a dipping sauce and were delicious and comforting. Besides the vegetable dumplings, vegetable and shrimp tempura, and vegetable egg rolls, there aren't alot of vegetarian or pescatarian options, and I only eat halal (which this place is not) , so I wouldn't go out of my way to try this again, BUT would come back if I was in the area looking for dumplings.
Meh to good. The location is awkward; it's part of a busy food court, with lots of tall chairs and group tables. It reminded me of a smaller version of a mall food court, which doesn't exactly conjure memories of fine dining. I ordered the dumpling combo; 3 beef, 3 chicken, 3 deep fried kimchi. The meal was ok but mostly forgettable. Not much else to say for a quick trip.
Found this place while walking through the Block. I saw the menu and right away knew that this was a Mongolian owned place therefore most of the dumplings are actually Mongolian and less other cultures that they claim to be. I think this is the reason many of the reviews are low stars because they came and expected other Eastern Asian dumplings as advertised on the menu. If the Bold Dumplings owners advertised it as Mongolian dumplings I think it would be more accurate and the people expecting the dumplings would understand Mongolian food tends to be meat heavy and with light seasoning. The service was great and they were very sweet. Food was okay considering I knew what I was expecting, but if I expected Chinese dumplings, I would have been disappointed because it simply isn't.
Ohh boy!! What lovely dumplings!!! Stumbled upon this place while I was attending a Yelp event at the neighboring Snowcream. As I am always on a lookout for some amazing dumplings, I had to try this out as it looked like they were making it fresh. Ordered a plate of vegetable dumplings and I have to say they were one of the best I have had!! Very flavorful and loved the soy sauce dip with it. Although I do feel they are a little expensive given the quantity they serve. It wouldn't serve as a meal for me hence taking a star off. Maybe 10 dumplings instead of 8 would be a good ratio!
Not the best food I had. Great location inside the block but the egg rolls were almost inedible for me. Tasted bland and had a lot of breading. Sauce wasn't great either. The beef pancake was also just ok. The steak hibachi had decent flavor and good sauce but the ratio to veggies was way off and I felt it was overpriced. Also waited a really long time for our food when it wasn't busy.

Today I tried the chicken and noodles, which is what I was expecting, but not really, I asked for spicy sauce and the Woman behind the country gave me the remaining kimchi juice (which I had no problem with). Honestly if I don't have the sauce, this wouldn't been the blandest meal I've ever had. The chicken as like a basic stir fry. I would pass on the entree on the visit. The vegetarian spring rolls were delicious, they came with nothing, but I ate them with fish oil. Delicious!

This time around, I placed an online order for soup (pork) and pan fried (chicken) dumplings. I got there about 5-7 minutes after receiving the notification that my order was ready for pickup. There was one person in front of me, so I waited for him to pay before moving closer to ask about my order but the lady at the register just walked away. She saw me, but instead walked away without saying a single word. Once she decided to come back to the register, I told her I'm picking up an online order and I gave her my name. She once again walks away - to the side this time where they keep the to-go orders - without saying a single word. I see her put food in boxes and then bagging them, but not telling me anything. I ask her "so is my food ready?" (I mean that's what it said in the email), she gives me a bad look and then hands me a bag and walks away. Whomever trained this person or told her that was acceptable customer service, clearly doesn't know any better. To make matters worse, I saw her and other employees touch everything around them and then food with NO gloves on. Totally unacceptable in a good establishment. Needless to say, I will not be going back there.
The Bold Dumpling and several other eateries are located in an eatery called The Block. We had originally gone there from a former experience with some Thai food which is no longer there. We thought dumplings sounded good for some eats. We ordered the pork and shrimp soup dumplings and chicken dumplings. They make your order fresh and give you a pager to use when your food is done. The food was done quickly. The pork dumplings come out in a small bamboo steamer. They were hot and juicy. The other dumplings were fried perfectly and the chicken inside was tasty. While hip in feel, It's very noisy in there. Conversation is difficult to have inside. In retrospect we would have liked dumplings with rice and something else. Shared parking. read more
Nestled in a food court in Annandale they offer a selection of hand rolled dumplings steamed and fried. Nap as well. Service was friendly. We ordered 20 minutes before closing and were made to order dumplings. We ordered the special which came with 2 kinds of fried dumplings and bao and it was pretty good. I was pleasantly surprised by the quality for a food court place. There's lots of tables and a few seats outdoors. It's a great spot to hit for a reasonable price. It takes a little bit of time so if you're in a hurry this may not be the best place to eat because of the amount of time it takes to prepare the food; however if you have time, this is a good place to get your dumpling fix. read more
I had a few items from Bold Dumpling when I was in the area on Sunday evening and decided to stop by The Block (a food hall - Bold Dumpling is inside). Their menu is large with more then just dumplings - ramen, hibachi, veggie tempura... I order the chicken soup dumplings, the vegetarian dumplings, and Youtiao (a sort of fried dough/donut they serve with sweetened condensed milk. The chicken soup dumplings were my favorite bite - on the small side, but definitely had some soup inside, and were very flavorful. The vegetable dumplings were a little bland (they tasted like steamed cabbage), and I used all of the sauce I was given to give them a little more flavor. The Youtiao was good, but maybe a little dense and it got stale quickly. It was a fun way to end the meal though. I really loved that they serve your dumplings in steamer baskets. My dumplings were steaming hot and easy to eat right from the basket. I'd definitely order the chicken soup dumplings again if I'm ever back at The Block! read more

My go to is the pork soup dumplings! Perfect for cold nights and boy was it a chilly night. You can order online or place an order in person. It does get packed so I would recommend going during "off" hours. There is plenty of parking and plenty of sitting area as well. . read more

Stopped by Bold Dumplings (inside the Block Food Hall) for a quick snack earlier this month. I got a combination of dumplings that came with beef, chicken, and Kim chi dumplings along with a side of pickled veggies. After ordering, you get a buzzer that'll light up once the order was ready. There were 3 dumplings of each flavor. They were on the bigger side and looked like empanadas which was different. The chicken on was ok, the beef was also ok, but the Kim chi one was very good. So good that I stared at the filling, wondering if there was any meat inside because it was packed with flavor! If there's a dumpling to try in a unique flavor, this would be it! read more
I have been meaning to try Bold Dumplings but I always end up near Pokeworks when I step into The Block. I'm glad I finally got to try them as it was delicious! We ordered the Fried Kimchi & Beef dumplings. I loved the dumpling dough (not too soft and just the right amount of thickness- sometimes you feel like you're just eating dough but I think this was perfect ratio of dough & filling). As an extra tip- the side of cabbage goes EXCELLENT stuffed into the dumpling. I would nibble an opening and then stuff in the shredded cabbage- HEAVEN!! This added a whole other level to the dumpling. read more

Not sure if their dumplings is good or not but their Ramen is terrible. I often come to the Block but never try their venue, and it was a mistake. I ordered spicy Ramen with chasu. Broth is salty, no taste of miso or pork broth, 1 of the chasu has only fat, and they pre boiled their noodle and it sticks together. Not a first time experience and will be my last. Maybe I'll try their dumplings to see but as for their Ramen is a NO NO. read more
My friends and I were craving some quality dumpling specifically XLBs and Bold Dumplings didn't disappoint. This place is so good I went twice in a month. I've tried everything from the pork soup dumplings, pork/shrimp XLBs, beef pan fried dumplings, fried kim chi and beef dumplings and the combination dumpling platter. Food quality is always in point as the dumplings come out piping hot and they definitely pack each one with plenty of vegetables/meat. The platter is a great option to sample everything. The soup dumplings are really popular and may not be available all of the time. First off, Iv'e noticed some of the reviews mentioning a long wait time. Just remember this is a small kitchen with limited staff. A minimum of 15-30 minute wait for your food. Its best to order, sit down get some snacks or drinks. I'd also recommend eating there as the dumplings are fresh vs the soup spilling out in your plastic containers when you order to go. read more

This review is for their DC location at Bryant St Market in NE DC. Super delicious soup dumplings. The handheld buzzer system provides a very organized way to wait for your meal so that you can pick your table at wait for it to be ready rather than hovering around the counter. The food is not pre-prepared so there is a little bit of a wait, but it comes out hot and super duper fresh which is worth it in my opinion. read more

I've been wanting to go here so bad for a long time now, and finally had the opportunity to go during my day off from work.The place has spaced out seating indoors, and some seating outdoors as well. It is required that you wear your mask at all times inside, unless actively eating/drinking. The Block Food Hall has a few vendors with many options of foods you can choose from ~ several asian traditional and fusion meals! YUMM! Pork Soup Dumplings - I just love the moment when they pop in your mouth with the pork and soup filling! The soup was very flavorful and the pork was moist and tender. You have to eat these with care because the dumpling breaks easily, and well, it's HOT haha. My only critique is that some of the dumplings didn't have soul in them, or were broken! Vegetarian Dumplings - My mom ordered this! The filling had a blast of flavor, and were nice, steamy, and soft ~ My mom enjoyed these! Slightly salty. Bao Buns with Pork Belly - The buns were very soft and smooth, and the pork belly was tender, juicy, and delicious! This was my first time trying bao buns! My fave dish! The service was really good and the people were really nice to me and my mom haha. I can't wait to come back to try more of their menu items! read more
Please press and hold pic to see the caption above the pic, I was really disappointed. I came allll that way to get a Bao bun and all I got was a dumpling with more dough than meat. The beef had all of these ingredients that was probably used as filler to have less beef than flavor. Please take it off the menu because it's not a Bao bun that most folks are looking for. I really liked how clean and natural taste they have. The beef soup was hearty and tasty. The broth was obviously well prepared. Three dumplings had different tastes, which was ideal for having different flavors in just one meal. Again, I really liked that the seasoning was nice and balanced without overpowering the ingredient's natural taste. The guy at the register was polite, quick, and had great customer service. Planning to go back to try their hibachi. read more

I come to The Block occasionally and it seems like there's a curse at this spot because it keeps changing food vendors! Well, this place ain't no Din Tai Fung. I mean it ain't bad, but they could really improve. To be real honest, even 3 stars is being generous. I tried the pork soup dumplings and they were dry and didn't have a lot of soup in them (none really). Furthermore, the taste just wasn't that amazing. They're decent enough to finish them (8 pieces per order), but they aren't mind-blowing. And, for $11? I don't think it's really worth the price. I wanted to like this place a lot and maybe they're still working out kinks, but they fall short of the most important thing, a well-made delicious soup dumpling ready for nibbling and making a gloomy/rainy day better. I get it, a perfect XLB is hard to make, but a place that specializes in it and it's not even that good? Oh well. I am willing to give this place another chance next time I'm here. Bold Dumpling? That's a bold statement and in my opinion there's way better places in the DMV area. They need to up their game ASAP if they want to survive this cursed corner of The Block! read more
Service was horrible, no one was there to attend to their customers to order. It doesn't take much work when all you are is a little vendor inside of a food hall. All you guys have to do is smile, take order, make our food, and hand it to us. You're not serving us or anything, DO BETTER. It took about 10 minutes for the cashier girl to acknowledge us and finally take our order rudely... and about 30+ minutes for the soup dumplings to come out after we ordered it. It took way longer than we expected or that I ever had to wait for some soup dumplings. Pork soup dumplings came out extremely hot so we had to wait a little bit to bite into it. I will say that the soup dumpling wasn't bad at all, I'd give it 8/10. Not as good as Joe's Shanghai in NYC or other places that I have had it at but not horribly bad. Honestly wouldn't go back though because of the workers & wait time for 8 little dumplings, smh... read more

The pork soup dumplings here are AMAZING!!! I read a lot of bad reviews for the soup dumplings here and had low expectations. But am so glad I tried it...it is SO GOOD. Highly recommend!!! I LOVE SOUP DUMPLINGS and am always looking to try it at different places. My favorite locally was Bob's Shanghai 66 in Rockville. That is a bit far for NOVA. Bold Dumplings is my new favorite! Pros: thin dumpling skin, amazing flavor, lots of soup, good price point (about $1.50 per dumpling; about $1.90 per dumpling at Bob's Shanghai) Cons: like a 30 minute wait after you order (makes me think they wrap it fresh which is kind of crazy but also super fresh), the plastic spoon they provide is too small to hold the dumpling and catch the soup (I learned and brought my own Asian soup spoon from home and it was great) Several bad reviews mentioned no soup or very little soup. I will say, YOU MUST EAT SOUP DUMPLINGS RIGHT AWAY - plenty of soup! I would never carry out soup dumplings from anywhere. We had 5 people and first ordered 3 soup dumplings (the pork, the pork and shrimp, and the chicken). We ate it quickly and it was awesome! The favorites are either pork versions. The chicken is noticeably not as good, flavorwise. Then we ordered another 4. It took us longer to get to the fourth order and we noticed less soup in that one. So even dining in, the soup will start absorbing into the dumplings if you don't eat it quickly. In summary: order either of the pork soup dumplings for dine-in (don't carry out), bring your own larger soup for the best experience! read more
This place was kind of a disappointment all around. I went with a group of friends and will include their comments on the dishes they got as well. From the outside it looks like a decent place. A majority of the staff are making dumplings and that always gets me excited, knowing I'm eating dumplings made specifically for the restaurant, not mass purchased frozen ones that you could get yourself somewhere. A closer look shows dumpling prices that are a bit steep but if they're delicious then it'd be worth it. Other items on their menu seemed pretty comparable for their price. You're given a buzzer after ordering to let you know when your food is done allowing you time to find seating (the restaurant is located in The Block and has communal seating with the other establishments). The food... did not hit the spot. What we had: Soup Dumplings (Pork) - 4* - these were the best soup dumplings I've had in Virginia. The flavor was there. The delivery could use some improvement. There wasn't as much soup in the dumplings as I'm used to, in fact a few of them felt like they couldn't even be called soup dumplings, but the flavor made up for that. The dumpling skin was also a bit off. I couldn't tell if it had been overly steamed or if the skin was just too thin, but something was off. Once again, the flavor made up for that. I've been craving good soup dumplings and am glad I got to eat these, though I don't think I'd pay for them again, the price was in the stroller end for the classes mentioned above and the taste can't make up for that. Half the fun of soup dumplings is the soup and if you're not making your dough strong enough to keep that soup in, or if you're not making enough soup to put in the dumplings, then you are making good enough soup dumplings for me to continually purchase. Youtiao (chinese dough) - 5* it's hard to get fried dough and a sweet dipping sauce wrong, so it doesn't surprise me that this was delicious. Spicy Ramen - 3* overall it lacked flavor. The two dumplings that came with were good, that was probably the best part. The noodles were anything fantastic and the meat was just so so. They're really expected better. I've had Korean instant noodles that were better and those don't come with all the extra add-ons that this bowl comes with (dumplings, boiled egg, meat slices, a white thing that I think was tofu). Noodles (with Chicken) - 2* this was downright sad. After my first bite I regretted my choice. The sauce was delicious but it was mostly on the bottom and I didn't realize that till I was halfway through. The meat wasn't anything special and the noodles once again were boring. I don't know if I don't like the recipe they use to make the noodles, or if they just don't know how to cook their noodles well. All the vegetable sides were just meh. What the friends ordered (I did not try any of these, so these are their comments): Mini Bao with pork belly - they said this one was their favorite of what they got and that it was really good. (If I'm ever back in The Block I would personally give it a try.) Spicy Pork Wonton (8) - really lacking flavor. My friend actually went around the other stores to ask for salt to season it. They said that helped exponentially, but also expressed surprise that dumplings could be so bland to begin with. Scallion pancake with pork - while the concept was good the delivery failed. Both friends commented that the stallion pancake was too tough and very hard to bite into. One friend liked the stuffing, the other friend felt like they were only eating carrots because there was not enough sauce to balance the amount of carrots. read more
