I went back to Beasley's Chicken & Honey one last time as they close January 25th. Even on a cold,…read morerainy morning, there was a line outside before opening. I understand as if you aren't seated when they open, you can expect a 90-minute to two-hour wait. I was hoping to get the Chicken Pot Pie this time and thought my prior visit was just off. I was thrilled that most of the menu was available. They were just out of the banana pudding. So I got to try the pecan wings I read about with the white sauce. It was so good. Then I got the chicken pot pie and biscuits. The pot pie had old biscuits for the topping, but the creamy mixture with large chunks of chicken was delicious. My biscuits came with honey and were served warm. I left with a slice of the chocolate-caramel-coconut cake, a side salad without onions, and a fried boneless thigh. The salad was made correctly, and the dressing was included. The salad was full of veggies, and the cake was rich and moist. Service was friendly and as soon as I finished my iced tea, another appeared. My wings were brought out first and it was a while for the rest of the meal as the restaurant was full. But they didn't rush me at all. I actually liked the space between the dishes, as I might not have been able to eat it all otherwise. I couldn't finish both biscuits and was even provided a container for the honey. I am going to miss Beasley's, but I'm glad I got a positive experience to remember the restaurant.

We started with the fried green tomatoes, which were served over polenta with a reddish sauce drizzled around them. The tomatoes were fried nice and firm--they didn't fall apart and held their texture well. I enjoyed the appetizer. For our entrees, we tried several things: bourbon meatloaf, breakfast potatoes, fried chicken, fried okra, roasted Brussels sprouts, and grilled harvest chicken. The food portions were generous, and everything was well seasoned. However, this meal was more of a "just okay" experience for us. The bourbon meatloaf was okay, although you definitely have to be in the mood for meatloaf. The breakfast potatoes, fried okra, Brussels sprouts, mac and cheese, green beans, and grilled harvest chicken were all decent but didn't really stand out. The fried chicken was very well seasoned--perhaps a little too well seasoned for my taste, as it leaned toward salty. Our drinks were good, and I still enjoyed the atmosphere. Our waitress was also friendly and attentive, which helped make the experience pleasant. Overall, this visit didn't quite live up to our first experience. My husband was especially disappointed. That said, I wouldn't completely rule Tupelo Honey out. Sometimes a restaurant has an off day, and I'd be willing to give it another try--especially since we enjoyed our first visit so much.

The only flavor present was charred meat and it was the most dried out chicken we have ever had (unfortunately I tried it). The collard greens were bitter with little flavor and the black-eyed peas still had crunch to where they weren't cooked all the way. To say all this, to have a $100 bill was HIGHLY unappreciated as it was one of the worst meals we have had in a LONG time. I definitely could see why they were not busy. The food was cooked terrible. The green Formica countertop dates back to 1945, when the space served as a midday lunch counter. You can see decades of history etched into its surface--the wear from generations of elbows leaning on the counter. It's the kind of patina that simply cannot be recreated. That's what makes Poole's so special: it preserves the character of an old Raleigh diner while elevating the food, cocktails, wine and service to a very sophisticated level.
