The service was quick and delicious! I got a choco malt coffee as well as an eggything (egg bagel with everything seasoning) bagel with cream cheese!

Loved the classic bagel w lox n cream cheese. It was loaded with so much more. I had to save half for later until my mom wanted it. Now I gotta go back.

I am such a big fan of lox bagels, and Boichik gets it right. Thick slices of salmon, crunchy red onions, juicy tomato slices, and lots of schmear made for a perfect classic sandwich. I work around the area so I frequent here often, and sometimes I can't get a near $20 sandwich all the time, so I just get a bagel with lox spread and add red onions and cucumber and it still is so good. (That runs for less, like $10-12 I think.) Great spot for some solid bagel sandwiches and good spreads, I haven't tried the coffee here but I bet it's just as good. Great people working inside too!

Got the lox bagel and it was so yummy, only note is that it can be kind of messy but overall so yummy

I really wanted to love this place. After all the hype I'd heard, I was excited to finally try the bagels. I ordered The Mensch, and... it was super salty. Like, had-to-stop-halfway salty. The bagel itself was solid, but the sandwich was overwhelming. My partner went with a vegan option, which was better, but still didn't leave much of an impression. That said, the service was great: friendly, quick, and helpful. But it's definitely on the pricey side, and honestly, the quality didn't quite match the cost. I might be back to try a plain bagel or something simpler, but next time I'll lower the expectations a bit.

Boichik Bagels on College Ave near Rockridge has become my go-to spot for real New York-style bagels in the Bay Area. The bagels are exactly what you'd hope for--crisp on the outside, chewy on the inside, and always fresh. I've tried both the plain and everything bagels, and both were excellent. What really stood out for me, though, was the strawberry cream cheese. It's seasonal, so not always available, but if you see it, definitely order it. It's so light and fluffy with just the right amount of sweetness--by far my favorite. I also tried the salmon lox sandwich, and it was just as impressive. The salmon was fresh and paired perfectly with cream cheese, capers, and red onions. Simple but balanced and satisfying. That said, the service wasn't great. There was an older lady taking my order, and honestly, she didn't seem happy to be there. She wasn't rude exactly, but she came across as unfriendly and condescending, like she didn't want to be helping customers. It took away a bit from the overall experience, which was disappointing. The coffee was also a miss. It was very acidic and just not enjoyable at all. Definitely not something I'd order again. Despite the service and the coffee, the quality of the bagels themselves makes this place worth visiting. Boichik nails the classic NY bagel texture and flavor. I'll keep coming back for the bagels--especially when that seasonal strawberry cream cheese is available.

Quite good! Not life-changing, but I thought it was worth the price. I ordered online and good an everything bagel with hatch cream cheese, lox, cucumber, red onion, and avocado. If you think about it, most deli sandwiches are $10-15, and if you count an upgrade with avo, the bagel sandwich was worth the almost-$20 price. I'd order again.

Wow~ This place has the best bagels I have ever had and it does not disappoint. We got the garlic bagel with garlic and herb spread and it's delectably soft and scrumptious

A Berkeley staple! Delish bagel sandwiches. Come early before they run out of egg and everything bagels. The best NorCal bagel I've had but doesn't come close to east coast bagels. A tad bit pricey for a bagel, but worth the splurge once in a while. Lox is great and so are all the fresh veggies!

Ask the Community - Boichik Bagels

Are the bagels boiled before being baked?

Yes. Their website FAQ says so.

How long would it take to order and receive a bagel on a weekday morning? Are there ever long lines to order like on weekends?

The line is much much shorter on weekdays!

NYC cream cheese is robust, like if you get olive cream cheese, there are giant chunks of olive. Anybody know about the CC here?

Hi! The cream cheeses at this place are not as robust as in NYC. The whitefish spread is good as are the bagels. Everything is $$$$ and not as tasty as in NYC. Still, this is California and one can't be too picky. Enjoy!

How long can you keep the bagels for? (1 week?)

Freeze any bagels not eaten that day! You can slice them first, so they can go directly to your toaster.

How early do I need to get in line on a Sunday?

I'm always in the area on Sunday's and would say aim for anytime before 9:00am as early as when they open. Everything should be available and it's early enough that the line won't be ridiculous.

What are there store hours? Are they open now?

Yes, they are open Wed-Sun in the mornings and little into the afternoon. Day ahead ordering is available online for both pickup and delivery in the greater SF area, or brave the line and go to the store for same day pickup (and watch them make… Read more

Pizza bagels are served from 11 am on. I was greeted as soon as I walked in. You walk to your right when you come in and order and then go to the opposite side to pick up your order. There's a menu to look at on the counter. Lots of different bagels to choose from. You can order it toasted or not. And there's plenty of toppings and don't forget to ask what their daily special is. They have catering options (see the attached menu). The seating area is small & there's spots to sit outside. Parking is only on the street and they do have 1 handicapped parking by the front entrance. The fresh-frozen bagel is perfect once thawed and then toasted. I had mine with butter and it was great. I can't compare it to a NYC bagel (since I've never been there) but I enjoyed it. It would have been cool to see the factory pumping out bagels, but since I came by around 11, I'm guessing it was clean up time.

It's conveniently just off of San Pablo and Marin, with plenty of street parking. The small shop had every table taken, at 11:00 on a Saturday morning, and a line - almost - out the door. I brought home a half a dozen sliced bagels, a green onion and horseradish smear, a chai iced tea and a "Bougie" bagel. As bagels go, these were the quintessential perfect, chewy and soft, fragrant bagels. The cream cheeses were delish and perfect for family to build their fav bagel meal. The Chai, was what will keep me coming back, however! It was perfectly sweetened, versus the sickening sweet of many shops, with a nice oat foam on the top. Don't forget the cinnamon sprinkle, which added the fragrant element. I had to wrestle my 20 yo for it when I got home. Now I'm left craving more.

Naturally, I sought to sauce it up. I grabbed a handful of ketchup packets - eight ketchup packets to be exact - unaware that I was actually raiding the store's 401 (k). Enter: The Ketchup Guardian. Apparently, at Poppy's the staff isn't paid in local currency, but in Heinz ketchup packets. In pursuit of a heist, I was promptly confronted for my excessive looting. I foolishly assumed that my $16 bagel bought me the right to adorn my bagel with ketchup. I stand corrected. By taking the ketchup packets, I was cutting directly into this woman's livelihood, one ketchup packet at a time. The Audacity of...Condiments? The experience shifted form annoying to satirical performance art when... The Gossip Session: After the initial confrontation, the Ketchup Guardian decided to debrief the greatest heist since the Louvre while I was standing within earshot. I didn't realize venting about customers in front of them was the new gold standard of customer service. Since I was the guest of honor, I joined the conversation. Of course, the Ketchup Guardian doubled down on complaining about my thievery. She then weaponized her power by threatening to call her boss. The energy was purely, "I'm calling the authorities because you took too much tomato paste." In a city like Oakland, you'd expect a business to have a shred of awareness regarding the policing and micro-aggressions. Instead, I was met with an employee monitoring my ketchup consumption, weaponizing her manager as if he were a high-ranking official coming to discipline a wayward child. If you are the owner off Poppy's, please do reach out. I'd love to know if your business model is truly so fragile that eight packets of ketchup necessitate a call to HR. Pro-tip for future patrons, bring your own ketchup bottles from home. Better yet, find a bagel spot where sauce policing isn't the top priority. I wanted a bagel, not inspiration to write this review. To the employee who gets paid in ketchup, sorry for stealing your wages. One star for the bagel, zero starts for the Ketchup Guardian.
