They had 2 people sitting down with an iPad to help with people's orders, you they just wait in front of their door for your order. My first time trying bagels in Cali! Growing up in NJ/NY area, I didn't have too high expectations for Bolchik Bagels, but I was pleasantly surprised. Stopped by around noon on Saturday, and the wait was probably about 20 minutes. We ordered a daily special of toasted everything bagel with lox cream cheese, sprouts, and tomatoes. The texture of the bagel wasn't the same as I'm used to, but the fillings were delicious. I'm honestly used to a lot more cream cheese in my bagels, but I'm sure this is much healthier haha. I also saw they had some pretty unique cream cheeses like a hatch chile one that I would come back for. Overall, these are solid bagels and reminded me of the ones back home. They are a bit smaller and much pricier for bagels that I'm used to (I would get a dozen for $13 vs here is a dozen for $33), but I would make a trip out here if I'm ever missing a good bagel! read more

New York Times said this is the best bagel (better than bagels in NYC) so I just had to check it out! I was here at 12.30pm (they close at 1pm) and there was such a long line! Good thing the line moved fast and took only about 15min and I was at the front. Loved the bagels I got, definitely tastes like bagel in NYC! Although the line was pretty long, it took roughly 10 minutes from line up to getting to the order register. This is definitely one of the places that made me fall in love with Berkeley and brings me so much joy HIGHLY recommend!! Food: 9.5/10 I have never been to new york, but for now the bagels here are the best i've ever had! Before coming here, I had never tasted a bagel that had such a chewy yet soft texture (and doughy but fluffy at the same time?) and great flavor. I have tried the salt and pepper, everything, pumperthingle, eggything, and cinnamon raisin so far, all were bæ and goals. The eggything is an egg bagel with everything seasoning and has a softer texture than their other bagels and a super subtle egg flavor. I also love how they use extra flaky sea salt on the pumperthingle and it adds a nice crunch. I always get spread+fillings: the veggies are always super fresh and the cream cheese the perfect temperature and creaminess. also they give a respectable amount of cream cheese! The appropriate amount is when you can see bite marks The lemon and thyme cream cheese is so flavorful but is seasonal (i had it in the spring). I honestly opt for the plain cream cheese (which is salted) a lot because the other fillings and bagel are so fresh and tasty already. Only taking off 0.5 points because i have found the amount of filling can sometimes be inconsistent, but it is always sooo delicious nevertheless. The price can be a little high for bagels, but I think the quality and experience is worth it and the bagels are really substantial, especially if you get it with a protein. Ambiance: 10/10 Located on college avenue right before oakland in a really whimsical and pretty area! It's always pretty lively (a lot of cute dogs) and really nice vibes, especially with the trees and gardens thag you can walk by in the surrounding neighborhoods. Finally had my first Boichik Bagel today. Wowwww. I grew up in LA with no shortage of excellent bagels. And when I'm in NYC, Ess-a-Bagel on 3rd is my first and last stop. When I moved to the Bay Area I was disappointed in the lack of good bagels places! Wise Sons always leaves something to be desired. They have all different bagels and cream cheese and a popular item is The Classic that has lox and capers. I also tried the everything bagel with onion and chive cream cheese which was good too. A popular cream cheese to get it called "the pink label" which is their version of plain whipped cream cheese. I didn't try it but they sell buy the tubs and looks good. I'm not going to lie. These are REALLY good bagels, and I will venture to say they are the best bagels in the Bay Area (the NYT also seems to share this opinion). But, I'm not sure if they're worth 15.50 for a classic Nova Lox sandwich. I believe that's still up for debate. Regardless, the bagels (while pricey) are still amazing; the bagel itself was not dense and had just the right amount of chewiness with no rubbery texture and the salmon was extremely fresh. Will I be coming back? Maybe if I'm in the area, but I'm perfectly fine with the decently priced bagels they serve at Noah's or Bagel Street Cafe. Also, the line may seem long upon first glance, but it doesn't take more than 15 minutes to get through the whole thing. Came here on a Saturday morning to grab bagels for breakfast. Waited about 15 minutes to order and receive our bagels, which was not bad at all. Tried their most popular item - The Classic, which consists of lox, chive cream cheese, capers, onions, and tomatoes on a poppyseed bagel. Bagel was nice and soft, chewy with a nice crunch from being toasted. Lox portion and cream cheese was generous. Lox wasn't salty, unlike some other places I've had where it overwhelms the bagel. I probably could have gone without the capers as they were too salty for me. Service was quick and staff was nice. Social distancing with masks in place. Ordered 6 feet away and tapped my card to pay. Would recommend trying if you're craving bagels as you can't go wrong with Boichik. I ordered the Classic on a sesame bagel, which consisted of a ton of smoked salmon, cream cheese, and capers. The Smoked salmon had such a nice flavor to it, and the bagel was chewy and soft. The bagels were pretty good and chewy. You could definitely taste the flavor of the sesame in it too. Boichik had a lot of different types of bagels - I really wanted to try the egg ones, but they were sold out so quickly in the morning! The line is pretty long, so you'll want to get there early! It also closes at 1 PM, so make sure to get there by at least 12:30. Some of the bagels may be sold out nearing lunch time, so try to get there before the lunch rush. read more

Simply AMAZING!!! I am in New York bagel heaven! As a native New Yorker who craves delicious authentic bagels... this is it. I have tried all the competitors in the Bay Area and many in LA and trust me, these are the best and outshine all the others for quality, texture, chewiness, consistency, flavor, crust and taste. I have followed this business and opening for some time, and the recent NYT article was spot on; they are even better than most New York bagels while still retaining truly authentic quality. The hype is justified! The prep and cooking process is vital and they have it down. I decided to finally try them out after depleting my supply, and ordered online for a delivery two weeks out. It was simple and they communicated very effectively, both by email and text. I had a window delivery for 7am to 12pm and got a text early confirming between 9:45 and 10:45. It helped knowing that. As the deliver truck approached I got another update to "get the coffee ready' which I found clever and cute. They apparently have a broad delivery area depending on specific days of the week. Delivery was convenient, yet I would also go for their order ahead drive thru too. I got a dozen bagels- sesame, poppy seed, everything and "pumperthingel" + some Bialy. Although I have only had the sesame so far it was delicious and heavenly, best ever, and the others look equally wonderful. The Bialy was scrumptious, and a delight of flavor and texture, much different in consistency than the bagel, similar to pizza dough. It has an onion filling in the center. YUM! I warmed and ate one while carefully toasting the bagel. I also got three cream cheese spreads (chive, horseradish cheddar & scallion, and Pink Label)-.and tasted each. Absolutely fresh, delicious and just the right spreadable texture and consistency, not too fluffy or heavy. The horseradish was mild and quite tasty, not overpowering or harsh. And the Pink Label is uniquely good, with a slight pleasurable tartness. Finally, I got the Nova lox, again top quality. So in the end I made my toasted sesame bagel topped with horseradish cheddar & scallion cream cheese, capers, sliced onion, a slice of heirloom tomato and a good amount of lox! Absolutely a taste treat that satisfied every craving and longing for a quality New York bagel I ever had! The last time I had a bagel even close was at a bagel shop in the lower East Side of Manhattan about two years ago. Yes, it is pricey but you get the value and quality of what you pay for. Yeah the bagels here are pretty good but holyyy $13 for the classic!! That's insane. But the bagel itself was pretty good considering the lox was nice and Smokey and the tomatoes and onions tasted very fresh. The bagel had a nice chew and thickness to it and the chive cream cheese wasn't too heavy and whipped to a nice consistency. My only real issue with the bagel is that it tends to drift to the saltier side and my friends everything bagel with cream cheese was also a little salty for her. Also, I was pleasantly surprised but whatever almond butter they use here; it's so smooth and delicious! I blame *Tejal Rao* from the NyT for the sudden increase in wait times. Ofc, it's still an honor to bump New York off the top spot for best bagel in the US, but flattering praise from a NyT article, the OG influencer, would surely bring crowds. And it did. Opened in November 2019, this little-bagel-shop-that-could rose to fame rather quickly. To put things in perspective, Berkeley's Boichik isn't even 2y old! The first time I tried the "best bagels" in the country, I was fortunate to have a coworker wait in line for me. She waited 2+ hours which I expected for 2 reasons: 1) it was on a weekend morning and 2) it's still hyped. But worth the wait? Hard to say because I didn't wait for them. "The classic" in all its chive cc glory tasted pretty damn good even after sitting for an hour waiting to be eaten. But the second time around I decided to line up for these chewy, yet not overly dense bagels. This was 7:30a in the morning, mind you. But there was already a line. I didn't have to wait 2h but still don't people have jobs to go to?! I waited 30min and I have to say that's my cutoff. Any longer and I'd be like welp, I live 10min away, I can always come back. Luckily, that wasn't the case this morning and I ordered the classic on untoasted (the default) everything bagel and the daily special on toasted everything bagel, which had avocado, tomato, sprouts and cc. I split them both with my bf and I couldn't really tell the difference between the toasted and untoasted tbh. They tasted the same to me. I feel like the toasted was just warmed and not crispy. And i LOVED the sprouts in the daily special! That being said, I definitely will be back but at a time when the wait is more reasonable, whenever that happens. read more

The hype is real, people. I've driven by the line before and felt intimidated by the looooong line of people wrapped around the block. But today, on this beautiful sunny Sunday, I decided I was going to be one of those people. The line is actually surprisingly quick. It helps that there are menus every few feet to help you prepare your order. I probably changed my mind at least a few times before I saw "fennel". Oooh, limited time spring onion and fennel cream cheese? WINNER. I was also set to get an everything bagel (always everything) when I noticed their "eggything". Whoa...mind blown. I sure love me a good egg bagel too. Eggything it is! I loved watched the workers through the big window making the bagels, slicing them and putting together the sandwiches. As a former Noah's Bagel worker, it gave me the flashbacks. Our order took less than 10 minutes - not bad at all. I waited a while longer until I was home before eating it and it was still toasty and oh so good. The cream cheese wasn't overpowering with the onion and there were actual bits of fennel scattered throughout. If I had it again, I would add fresh tomato and a sprinkling of salt but it really was a delicious sandwich as is. I would definitely recommend this for any bagel lover and especially a NY style bagel lover! read more

The last man standing had a sign on his back that said "end of line" and no one else was allowed to go behind him. I highly recommend the pickled onions they have much more flavor and bite than regular onions. Everyone says wonderful things about the bagels at Boichik. Yes, those bagels are good. However, not enough praise is given to the spreads. I am not sure what they put in their basic cream cheese spread but it is so unbelievably rich and delicious. Its also "airy". Its light in that it appears to have been whipped a bit. So good. If basic cream cheese doesn't do it for you, try the sun-dried tomato cream cheese. It gives the bagel a more savory vibe. A little more flavor. But not too much. My favorite bagel is the cheesy asiago. They use a high quality asiago so it has a lot of punch. Love it. read more

Fast forward to now, and I've had the luxury of trying them again but on somebody else's dime. My employee's husband dropped by with some bagels and cream cheese for us. This time around, I was able to try multiple bagels and really examine them for what they were. They were super soft and fresh. Delightfully fluffy and chewy. For a gal who places bagels on the bottom of the carb totem pole, I was actually quite impressed. I was so impressed that I almost made a return visit to get more but then... I saw that line. Whew chile'... these people do NOT play about them bagels. A word to the wise; you need to get there at the crackus of dawn if you want to avoid that line. They sell out pretty quickly on some days too, so I'd make sure they actually have inventory before you even step foot in that line. But anyways, the bagels are yummy. Are they worth $5 a piece? Not sure about all of that but... I ain't no NY bagel fiend nor am I an NY bagel aficionado. But if YOU are, it might be worth getting in that line to try one of those $5 bagels. Absolutely must visit if you want to try the best bagels anywhere! 5* LOVE! We heard about this place having the best bagels in the country (sorry NY!) and had to try it! There is always a line outside and they close at 1pm so plan to get there in the morning before they run out of food. The cool thing about this place is that their daily special bagel changes everyday so every visit you can sample a unique combination of ingredients put together by their talented team. You have to line up and order outside. They call your name when the order is ready. All orders are to go and the menu can and should be scanned on your phone while you wait. Do not go up to the counter to order and then see the menu as its so overwhelming because everything sounds soo good and you have to be quick so the line can move :P The day I went the special was 'Lox spread with cucumbers and sprouts' ( $7.50) and it is now my favourite combo 12/10. The cream cheese is extremely flavourful accompanied by the fresh cucumber and sprouts. I got the toasted everything bagel and it is now my favourite bagel. It is perfectly chewy and full of flavour .. soo good that you can eat it as is or with only butter too. YUM!! We also tried the Egg salad bagel 10/10 which just excellent as well. Tip - Add avocado for the extra goodness to this one! ($9 approx). I also got their decaf coffee with cream which is really good 8/10 because they use great beans. Tip- if you ask for cream they will add it and give it to you. Eg. My last visit the coffee was perfect but the latest visit had a-lot of cream added for my liking so just a heads up on that! Finally we ordered the Classic bagel ($16) which is their lox with capers and cream cheese special. This was a hit with my family but for me personally it was a little too salty. It was a bit expensive for just a veggie bagel at $8, but that's just Boichik for you. Also got a poppy seed bagel with pink label cream cheese and egg salad, which I've never had before, and it was a surprisingly yummy combo. Overall, Boichik bagels, I think, do taste more fresh than a bagel from an average place, but I'm not quite sure if it offers enough of a difference to be worth the cost increase for me, hence the four stars. I had been craving a darn good bagel for a while and it so happened I was passing by a legit looking spot during my longer morning walk on College Ave. I stepped in a line of about 4 ppl and browsed the menu. Ah! The Classic looked like it had everything I wanted, but wow- at a whopping $15.95 thanks to the lox! I took my takeout order to the nearby Philz outdoor seating area and dug in. It was really delicious and reminded me of the bagel shops in NY. I had gotten the Everything bagel and each component of the bagelwich - cream cheese w/chives, red onions, capers, tomatoes and of course the fancy tasty lox came together so nicely in the first bite. I am so happy they are delivering now! These bagels are authentically New York style bagels. I am always looking for the perfect bagel and I don't know if there is such a thing, but these bagels are heavenly. I ordered four bagels to sample, including a pumperthingel, which is an everything pumpernickel bagel. I have never had one before, but it won't be my last! It was dark brown & dense as one would expect, but light & crunchy on the outside. The everything topping was scrumptious; the hint of caraway with a bit of a malty sweetness made it my favorite. I also got a regular everything and two poppyseed bagels. They were all very good. I ordered the pink label cream cheese and some of their nova lox. The cream cheese was very light & airy and the lox were of a very high quality. I got it all delivered Sunday morning. I ordered an Eggything bagel with the Modern Kitchen vegan spring onion and chive cream cheese, lox, tomato, and cucumber. It came out to $15.50, but had generous layers of cream cheese and lox. The bagel was chewy, but a bit dense, and had a lot of flavor. I'd order the Eggything bagel again - but they did have a couple varieties of Pumpernickel which made me curious to try them next time. When my friend and I arrived at the store, they were taking orders outside via two cashiers. I stopped by this place after my morning Pilates. I built my own bagel. The toppings were all great, but the bagel itself was on the dry side and a little salty. This could be because I asked for a toasted bagel. But I'm used to having fluffier New York bagels in general. read more

Saw this on tiktok as "the best bagels on the west coast." Ive had at least 2 new york bagels so i am definitely qualified to say this bagel was pretty amazing. I got The Classic Sandwich with Everything bagel. Tons of lox which is my favorite, but surprisingly the bagel stood out in each bite. Well seasoned, bussin chive cream cheese with capers. Only criticism was the whole thing was too fat to take a bite through the whole thing and the filling squeezed out the sides. I ordered on the website ahead of time because I saw a lot of reviews saying theres often a line. I went on a Wednesday around noon and there was maybe 4 people in the line? My order was ready for pickup and I was able to grab it and scoot home to monch. The store is pretty small, no seating area you just get the goods and go. 10/10 would recommend read more

Not the biggest bagel fan, but I really liked the bagel sandwich I got from here. Was just walking around the area and wanted to try it. Weird set up of how to order. It seems like this was something developed in the COVID times and they just stuck with it. The procedure is you order from a worker sitting at a POS and then wait for them to call your name with your order. I got the daily special with the pumpernickel bagel. It was pretty good. I do not remember what was in the filling but it was delightful. Packed with filling though I was looking for more crunch. The pumpernickel is now my new favorite bagel flavor, usually get plain or just eat a cinnamon raisin if offered one. No available seating, but located on College so a lot of other businesses there to take up seating near Peet's Coffee. Street parking or can park in the Safeway parking lot (Yes, located on the top of Safeway). Fair pricing, would definitely go back if in the area again. read more

Customer service needs an overhaul. Been here on college ave 3 times and each time it was less than satisfying. First time, i ordered an everything beagle with lox and cream cheese. The order taker questioned my order, possibly confused, so i repeated and saiid thats it lox and cream cheese. Then they told me to read the menu to figure out what i wanted. I repeated, but had to raise my voice a little for them to believe me. 2nd time- coffee tasted like water and was luke warm, 3rd time - today - ordered with same order taker as the first time. Ordered and gave my name. As i waited it was taking a while, so i asked, anything ready for Martin, the said no, so i waited, but then couldnt wait anymore so i sternly asked them to look for my order. The found a bag with my name written as Martino, i know how you say my name and i dont add an o at the end. Is it because im brown? Maybe maybe not but i will not be going here again and will never recommend. The location on gilman has no issues so my family will never go to college again. read more

I've had some yummy bagels in my life. Nothing beats a toasted everything bagel with cream cheese and smoked salmon. They absolutely nailed it, everything was spot on and left me licking my lips. The way its packed and cut makes it easy to dig into. Only complaint was that they are currently operating as take out only and the outdoor seating was blocked off. read more

I'm not even a bagels person, but I saw the line and had to try.. lives up to the hype! I think this place turned me into a bagel lover. I tried the seasonal sun dried tomato pesto cream cheese. Sooooo good - the only thing I'd do differently is ask for less cream cheese. I added sprouts, wish I also added cucumbers. Everything bagel is the most popular so that's what I got! Next time, I want to try the cinnamon raisin one :) read more
