So probably about four years ago I got to sample this amazing chowder at the North Coast wine event…read morein Santa Rosa. I was blown away, and I never forgot about it.. Now that we're on the Sonoma coast quite often I wasn't quite ready for a sit down, so I decided to take the chowder to go. According to the hostess, the bar staff would take my to go order. So I probably sat at the bar for I want to think about five minutes before I was even acknowledged that's very disappointing. it really gives you a dismissive feeling when other guests are being intended. I'm not talking about a large group 4 down to two people, and I honestly felt ignored. Any way I waited patiently and was finally asked if I could be helped so I said yeah I wanna place it to go order. I'm kind of driving down the road and I just wanna take it to go. That was no problem. I wandered around the property, which is really lovely while I waited for my chowder. My receipt came to approximately $37 for my to go order of only two servings of chowder. I served it that evening, along with a salad and some filet mignon in the comfort of our own accommodations. While the flavor was whatever I remembered, it was a great flavor. It's rich and it's definitely comfort food. However, the potatoes were all raw basically uncooked not at all what I would expect for a seafood chowder. While the potatoes should be not mushy, these were just nearly raw. After the anticipation of looking forward to enjoying and sharing this dish, I feel pretty disappointed. So I can cross this one off my foodie bucket list. Been there done that was just OK. #coastkitchen

TLDR: Nice romantic getaway…read more I don't normally review hotels. But the hotel is special, so I'm doing something special as well! I know I'm going to sound like a infomercial, but this place HAS EVERYTHING. It's got a GREAT restaurant (which I'll definitely review in a bit), they have a Record library (AND every room has a record player), they have board games, they have outdoor games, they have hiking trails, they have an Exercise room!, they have BEAUTIFUL scenery. About the only thing missing, is probably a pool. But given the fact that we came in the SUMMER and it was STILL very chilly, I doubt anyone would be swimming anyway. You can always just drive 15 minutes to the beach and swim in the ocean anyway. All the staff were super friendly, from the housekeepers to the front desk. I also like the fact the front desk guy even knew my name! Every time I talked to him, he always greeted me by name. Unfortunately, I wish I knew his name... but anyway that was a great touch. We chose this place because it was a pet-friendly place. The fee was a bit high, but it included a doggie bed and 2 bowls and some doggie treats. Too bad we have cats... heh. But the thought was really appreciated! It was clear the bedrooms have been remodeled, because even though the exterior looked old... the inside was anything but. Nice hardwood floors, an open bathroom with 3 swinging barn doors. We splurged and got the balcony with an ocean view. It was all soooo Romantic and lovely. Truly a special place to stay. Wifi was excellent, and they had a modern smart TV as well. They even provide complimentary pastries early in the morning, and cookies at night! Will definitely want to stay here again for a nice getaway! Only downside is getting here... involves some hairpin turns. My wife got carsick unfortunately.

Overall would definitely be returning and can't stop raving about this hidden gem.

Wish I had known a couple of details before planning my anniversary dinner here…read more This place is known for epic views, naturally we wanted a table with a view so I called a week in advance to request just that. The woman I spoke to said she would put it in her notes and that specific tables are not able to be held. She assured me we would have a good spot so I took her word for it. This was our first time coming here and its an hour drive. There is very minimal parking. We were lucky to get a spot as someone was leaving. We were seated at the worst table this place has to offer, right at the entrance to the bar and kitchen, in a narrow walkway, there is a window for one person to look out of and the other seat is looking into the kitchen as the table is positioned halfway in the middle of a window, so one side is against a wall and a view of the kitchen. The busy waitstaff was coming in and out quickly from both areas and walking past us with plates and such, it was chaotic at best. It felt almost insulting to be seated here as we had made a request well in advance to celebrate our anniversary which was also not acknowledged. Another party was just leaving so I was able to request to move. We were then seated at a 2 top table just outside of the atrium with a direct view thru a window of another 2 top table on the other side of the glass so when you go to look out the window its like you are staring at the people at the table thru the glass partition. We were so deflated by this whole seating situation. I say all of this to point out that if you are a party of 2 there is barely any tables with a clear view for both people so keep that in mind! If you have a party of 4-6 you have a much better chance of a better table. Really wish I had known that!!! The interior was nice enough but lacking the romance and ambiance I had hoped for, can we get some candles or flowers on the tables? Seems like an obvious detail overlooked. As far as the menu we were a bit underwhelmed by the offerings, there is a prefix menu and a small menu adjacent with minimal options like lamb and elk or vegetarian.... Probly should have looked at that before making this reservation but I had heard how amazing it was so I just took a chance. Although the choices were limited we enjoyed everything we ordered, food and drinks. Our waitress was nice and did a good job for us overall but definitely was more attentive and informative to the group adjacent to us which was a bit disappointing. Again this was a celebratory dinner and it just fell short for us in that way as it was not acknowledged Our tab was a little over 300$ portions were modest although tasty. I enjoyed the drinks and desert the most. To sum it up, I wont be going out of my way again to come back here. If I found myself in the area I might enjoy stopping in for a drink and dessert. Id say a solid 2.5 stars

There were two chairs in the room that didn't quite fit. The room looks as if it may have been recently remodeled but they forgot to decorate it, so they threw a couple of sadly outdated prints up and a horrible image of a sheep's face against a wallpaper print wall. The heater needs work because it makes a noise resembling concrete being swept- all night long. The room had no visible power outlets near beds, where we expected to be able to recharge phones and multiple devices. In order to turn on the lamp between the two beds you need get down on the floor under the desk to find the switch, which was plugged into an extension cord under the desk. The room needs at least one reachable outlet per wall outside of the bathroom countertop which is too wet to act as a charging area. An outlet with four plugs needs to be installed between the beds at top-of-desk level. The bedside lamps are ancient and need replacing. We were very disappointed and found the room unacceptable. Don't stay here.

A full breakfast is offered every morning and you get to select where to dine, such as the River Room (recommended), the dining room, garden patio, or even in your room. The menu selection is extensive and generous. Every evening there is a happy hour with a great selection of local wine and a snack platter that is delightful! They also serve warm chocolate chip cookies. This is an incredible to meet new people. Each night we had stimulating conversation with guests who traveled far and wide. We were late for dinner both nights because of the great discussions we had. Briana was the manager on site and she is incredible! She needs to teach a master class on hospitality. She thought of everything and was so warm and accommodating. We had a special and memorable time. Our room was on the 3rd floor in the main building just opposite the rooftop bar which was classy and offers a nice view as well as a crisp martini. The room was clean, beautiful and had a lovely view of the vineyards off the balcony, which also overlooks the outdoor spaces. The bathroom was spacious and includes everything you need down to the comfortable robe and the wonderful Lather brand soaps and shampoos. Water pressure in the shower was great and the shower area was spacious and clean. Inside the room, we were provided a nice complementary bottle of Chardonnay and some lovely tea and coffee options, refilled daily. We headed to the gym after a long drive and were similarly impressed. All the equipment is new with high end treadmills and ellipticals. The Pilates is a nice touch you don't see often. The water, towels, and even fruits were well stocked. The restaurant Folia is superb all around. Our server was professional and attentive, knew the menu well and was always at the ready. For dinner we opted for the 7 course tasting menu with wine pairing. As a Charlie Palmer restaurant, expectations were high. Folia did not disappoint. The food was delicious. Our sommelier, Tess, was friendly, knowledgeable and professional. We even got to meet Charlie Palmer and his son Reed. After the meal, we were provided with a copy of the menu signed by all. Nice touch! We stopped at the rooftop bar briefly before turning in for an early night. The next day, we left early and spent the day wine tasting. Upon our return, we found the room clean, replenished and in great shape. We cleaned up and headed to Geyserville for a stunning pizza. Buyer Beware - Two restaurants shut down on Mondays and Tuesdays…read more We found out after we booked (and too late to cancel) that for our anniversary trip the two days we are staying do not include the two nice restaurants on property. Both are shut down fully on Mondays and Tuesdays. Hard to believe that they don't have one open for each of the two days. I would not have booked if I had known that up front. We can't change the date of our anniversary, and we cannot cancel this booking without losing 100% of the room rate.

The manager treated us very poorly, saying all sorts of bizzarre things to my 8 year old daughter and I. He refused a refund although we had not used the room at all and had booked last minute, five hours earlier that same day at noon. First he said he couldn't refund without his employer's permission. I requested he ask the owner and he behaved very angrily and asked if "You want to be my boss? Will you pay me? Buy my food, my bread, my roti?" It was absolutly bizarre and such an obvious show. Finally I went and knocked on the owner's door, a nice lady who lives on top of some of the units and she offered a refund immediately. The manager is not doing his job maintaining the property and, when I mentioned there were none of the normal postings about fire safety, hotel licensing, etc., he accused me of using my "big city power to beat up on small business" advising I should go beat up on a corporate hotel. After he finally refunded my one night stay and we were driving away, he actually yelled "Get the F%&k out!", taking a picture of my car while we drove away. I am in Guerneville a dozen times a year and I have never experienced anything so sketchy.

Really old. Also not a problem for us, we loved the charm (which is often just another word for 'old'). It's funky. No TV. No capacious lobby. No concierge. There is a bar downstairs, but there's not a single fern in it. Need to be pampered? We don't. What it's got going for it: Big fluffy towels. Charm. Authenticity. Close to the coast without coastal prices. Filtered water available at no extra charge, BYOBottle. A few cons: The bed was too soft (for us, at least). The check-in process was not clear to us (but the guy at the bar cleared that up in a jiffy). Some of the electrical outlets were a little loose (but not dangerously so), so plugs felt like they might fall out (they didn't). Windows didn't have screens, so a few mosquitos found their way in. The Valley Ford Hotel is right on Highway 1, but we didn't mind any noise from the highway, unlike some other reviewers. We did hear it, but it's not like being under a flight path for a major airport or across from a steel mill. We barely noticed the noise. And the proximity to a pretty good restaurant is hard to beat. Just walk down the stairs, turn left, and you're there. The few cons taken individually are not a big deal, but they collectively bring our rating down one star. I think, though, the most important consideration if you're wondering how we feel about the Valley Ford Hotel is this: We intend to stay there again.
