Me blissed out after my fantastic birthday massage today.

I have been going to Body Bliss and Beyond for several years now and I highly recommend it! I always have an amazing experience. Today I had an hour therapeutic massage with Kim, who was such a great healer: wonderfully skilled masseuse, kind, incredibly welcoming. I can't wait to go back!

My Mom had purchased a deal on LivingSocial and gifted it to me for a 1 hour massage. The location is off of Bladensburg Road and if you aren't paying attention and driving at night it's easy to miss. The sign on the outside is dark (black) with white writing. The inside provides an inviting and relaxing ambiance. Although my deal was for a regular massage I opted for a prenatal massage which would normally be an additional $30 but because the receptionist failed to mention it to the massage therapist, she let me know that next time it will be an additional fee. I don't remember the name of my massuese but she was the absolute best! I was so relaxed and the meditation music was perfect, I think I dozed off a couple of times. There was another masseuse there and she was very rude to customers and had an attitude because they were late...oh they allow a 15 minute grace period after your scheduled appointment time. I purchased 2 more deals for this place for myself and my Mom and we'll be back after the holidays, I wouldn't dare book an appointment with the rude chick though. ***UPDATE 3.24.16*** Second time around Mom and I had a great experience thanks to our masseuses Cody and Ali. Get the deal on Groupon / LivingSocial and treat yourself to an invigorating experience that you won't forget! We will be back soon!

Firstly, the area is Not a high crime area (I'm a Washingtonian) it's just not A "commercial area)!!! I got a 1hour massage as a gift for Vday, from living-social! When you walk in the aroma alone puts you in a relaxing mood, the lights was low & the decor is nice! The inside looks nothing like the outside, not that the outside is bad, if it was in a more "modern" area it would stand out more! I was sent to room quickly! My therapist was Jessica (Jess) & she was Awesome! I left feeling like I was walking on Air! I told her my problem area & she worked on it! I will be returning! You can't beat the prices with or without a voucher!

I went in for a colon hydrotherapy session. I had done my research for months and decided on this location based on my research and their positive reviews. The ambience of the spa is very relaxing, and the staff was very accommodating and professional. Since this was my first ever colon hydrotherapy session, the owner thoroughly explain everything to me and the entire process. My session lasted about an hour. I can definitely say that I will be back for more sessions!

I booked the appointment online and put down the necessary deposit. They were running a special for the month of January- 10% off during weekdays and it included aromatherapy. The 10% off did not automatically apply and I'm pretty sure I didn't get the discount. Parking- street parking if available. We lucked up and got a spot right in front of the spa. No paying a meter was required. My massage therapist was Mike and my husband's massage therapist was Kimberly. The couple's room was tight so I could feel, see and hear every time my husband's therapist talked to him or when she moved. My husband felt that Kimberly just couldn't get the pressure right even though she asked. He also felt like she took a break after every touch so there was awkwardly long waiting periods. He said her touch was often too soft even though he told her the pressure wasn't enough. She was pleasant; notwithstanding, she just wasn't the right therapist for him. Mike also asked me once about the pressure and at the time, it was okay. As the massage went on, it became uncomfortable. In all fairness, I should've spoken up. The elbow and forearm down the back and around the shoulders was the most painful. We got the massages on Monday morning and I'm still in pain on Wednesday. This is the first time I've asked for a male massage therapist and boy could I tell the difference. The pressure alone was intense. The best part was the scalp rub and the lavender scent (although there was something mid-massage that smelled like mildew). When asked what areas of focus before starting, I mentioned that I wanted my mid-back and arms focused on because I have carpal tunnel. Those areas weren't paid any special attention--they were simply apart of the regularly scheduled program - upper left, then upper right, then lower left, the lower right, then flip and repeat and end with scalp. This was the process for both my husband and I though he was flipped front a lot sooner than I was. Overall, I wouldn't mind returning if I'm in the area and trying another therapist.

PRE-COLONIC: -Do not eat 2 hours beforehand -Avoid gassy foods day before and day of like: cauliflower, cabbage, beans, broccoli, onions, cucumbers, raw apples, melons or unripe fruit -Apply abdominal castor oil pack for 1 hour 3 days in a row before (I didn't do this) COLONIC: -You will be lying down, undressed from waist down, and completely draped at all times. -Warm alkaline water (about 20 gallons) flows through a small sterile one use disposable tube that is inserted into your colon. -Occasional gentle massage aids in the release of accumulated waste and toxins. -She explains everything very thoroughly (super interesting to hear more about your body) and answers all of your questions. POST-COLONIC: -Right after you will want to go to the bathroom and empty all of your fluids and it takes awhile but after you're done you feel amazing...the only thing I can compare it to is when you wake up in the morning and brush your teeth and your mouth feels so fresh and clean, that's how my gut felt after! -Avoid gassy foods for 2 days -Avoid strenuous exercise -Eat laxative foods: salads, vegetables, fruit, juice, soup, fish, chicken, turkey -Drink several glasses of water with lemon juice CONCLUSION: I've read the other Yelp reviews and I can understand their concerns with the appearance but that's just aesthetics. I mean when you think about some of the best food you've ever had it's typically in a low key, hole in the wall spot. What's important is the end result and I highly recommend if you're looking for an effective cleanse this the place to go! I was so shocked at her nastiness and snarky attitude that I almost walked out twice, but went ahead- thinking she "cant" be this way the entire time. But- I was wrong.. she got worse. To begin ... she was late and left me at the door outside ... for 10 minutes. We she arrived she didn't even introduce herself.. I thought she was a front desk person. But she was slamming around clipboards and no eye contact .. just over all rude. She attempted to charge me for a consultation ... but I told her there was NO place where a $50 fee was attached to this appointment. The paperwork does mention a consultation ... but there is no mention of money . I told her " of course I assumed you would consult with me before sticking a hose up my backside .." she agreed to continue without a fee.. but from that point on was like a used care salesman.. or timeshare.. Pushing products and upselling with every word. When I questioned her about anything ... from the amount of water being used, or what was in the fluid of the "green coffee mugs" she was adding ... she blew me off and said "its a basic colonic that you asked for" there was no explaination of the service... no step by step sharing of what would happen before or as it was happening. For someone who has never had it done... that would be the least she could do ... It went south from there. I told her I was full, and she added more... told me to tell when I had enough and was full and I told her I already had a few minutes prior and she continued to add more. As she told me to roll to my side, I told her fluid was escaping and I could feel it on the table and on my buttocks.( in fact i had to raise my body and l lift my shirt, so it wouldn't get wet . When she told me to get up and walk across the hall to the bathroom - fluid came out ( as expected.. right :?) and she got furious. Told me I did it on purpose. While I was in the bathroom - she was banging doors etc... When I exited the bathroom she told me that she has 2 mops .. I just looked at her.. and say "excuse me" Her reply ? yes, I have 2 mops, get one and help me clean up your mess" I told her absolutely not - I was not about to do that. Would you clean up blood if you bled on the floor of the lab during a blood test ?? she told me to go out the back door ... ( my car was in the front parking lot. As you can imagine... I will not be sending any referrals her way . I would never go back and wouldn't send my worst enemy to her. She obviously needs more customers or she wouldn't be advertising with Groupon, but with this attitude - and demeaner - its no wonder she isn't doing well .

HOLY SMOKES. So I…read morehave been a fan and an enthusiast of massage my whole life. Almost studied it, get them as often as possible, etc etc. After a week of hard work in DC I was just dying and needed good work ASAP. I spent the entire morning doing research and came across Meridian. Now I tend to love, enjoy and support questionably legitimate Asian massage parlors- they're inexpensive, you can usually just walk in, and they have amazing technique / will work HARD. I signed up for a two hour full body: I wanted my head and scalp 30 min; feet 30 min and body 60 min. (Most places won't even do 2 hours anymore). I did call ahead and "schedule" though the lady didn't ask for my name or anything. Hehe. It's in a beautiful neighborhood, but when I walked in i noticed 1) wow! Only 3-4 tables aka place is small and INTIMATE 2) no curtains for privacy of ANY sort 3) you cannot take your clothes off for lack of privacy- SO if you're going, make sure you wear loose clothing that's comfy or yoga pants or just keep this in mind. For example, I wore a long skirt that day... luckily, I had shorts underneath and removed my skirt or else my guy wouldn't have been able to massage my legs and buttocks well. They have a small bathroom. Only one man spoke English well enough to feel confident in basic communication/instructions/ feedback. They use timers. I think this is a good thing. And okay, THE ENTIRE TIME I was getting my MOST AMAZING MASSAGE EVER I was thinking about how I was going to write this man a letter thanking him and telling him of my experience with his skills and effective techniques. He did some stuff no one else has ever done! In a good way! His name is "PETER". The total for my TWO HOUR MASSAGE was quoted on the phone as being $100. It was $93 or $98 and I left Peter- my masseuse- a $100 tip. Why you ask? Because IT WAS THAT GOOD. Because people who often work in these specific style Asian/ Chinese "illegitimate" massage parlors don't charge or make a lot and because HE DESERVED IT. Not all people like this ambiance let alone the type of work they do here. This is for people who like deep and intense work and are ready to breathe through the pain (which is oh so good) and not for people looking for privacy, no barriers to communicating extensively, and want a "relaxing" Swedish massage / spa like experience. Of course one can ask for less pressure but this is not a spa experience. This is deep work done by hard workers for people who really need a reset or boost from pain and aching, etc. That being said, I go to Relax Station #9 on Mott & Hester (Little Italy) in NYC and have for years. That's one example of another similar establishment I have been a loyal patron of for years. I don't go to DC often, but you best believe I will be coming back to Meridian and hopefully booking with Peter! Oh yeah, the gentlemen who were working there barely spoke while working on people and amongst themselves (sometimes this happens at these establishments)- even once I was the only guest in there- and Peter at least, did not smell of cigarette smoke or any other odor, which is something that has happened before at other places. I recommend booking especially if it's Thursday- Sunday in advance or be ready to wait. They have a nice waiting/ seating area. But I went in a Friday morning and there were 2-3 walk-ins for quick 30 min tune ups. I am so thrilled with my experience that I will be writing Peter a letter in his native Mandarin and snail-mailing it to him. He deserves to know that his hard work is appreciated and not forgotten. I wish this place and Peter worked where I lived or vice versa. I would be a weekly patron, if even for 30-minute refreshers. If the above sounds appealing, stop looking and get your bum over there! Too bad the business isn't claimed on Yelp by anyone, because it's phenomenal and I hope they know it! Please consider "over tipping" as prices are so low, we don't want to exploit these individuals. They take cards (I think for a small fee) and can tip there but I think they prefer cash. UNTIL WE MEET AGAIN PETER... P.S. after my massage I felt DRUNK/INTOXICATED for a good 30-60 min. This happens sometimes after massage when toxins stored are released from muscles and released into your system for detoxifying. Hadn't happened to me in a long time. Make sure to drink plenty of water and sit for as long as you need if you're going for a longer, more intense session versus a 30-min tune up. Plan for it. The end.

We stumbled onto this place randomly and saw that their prices were really reasonable. So we have…read moreit a shot. One advice is that they reeeeallllly go into the deep tissue. So if it's too strong, just let them know to go medium or lighter on strength. Other than that, I had a super great masseuse. The morning before I slept wrong and had a neck and back ache. After the massage...gone! lol he cleared up the knots. There's also no private rooms so don't expect luxury. Just expect a really thorough massage. I'd go back again!
