They started to fall apart within the first 30 days, so took them back and Mr. Bodell tried to them several times! He used black thread on blue shoes! What a joke! He didn't even send them to a shoe-repairman! I will never step foot in this place!! Sadly, I can't even stand to drive by the place! He refused to refund my money or exchange the shoes! Recently had surgery on my foot and my doctor recommended a few different brands. Went online and discovered Bodells shoes in Long Beach. When I arrived I was greeted by a very nice young lady, I believe her name was Shawni. I told her the problems I was experiencing with my current shoes, they just didn't feel good on my feet, so she measured them. Wow, I haven't had my feet measured in probably 50 years. Nowadays you go in to a shoe store and your on your own, or order on line. Bodells is an Old School Shoe store where you are fitted properly with different shoes to choose from. I ended up purchasing a pair of New Balance, one of the brands my doctor recommended and they fit perfectly. I was very happy with the price also, and even checked online to compare prices and Bodells price was the same as all the on line shops, but the difference was the personal service that you don't pay extra for. I hate to write bad reviews. Check my ratings. I will never visit this store again - never. I looked hits place up on the Internet. Their website showed decent Florsheim shoes. I wanted a pair and drove to their store. FYI, parking can be a problem, as many business are stuffed into close quarters. The older man promptly dismissed me and let the young fellow who wasn't familiar with their products tried to assist me. As it turns out they don't stock Florsheim shoes. Internet only - meaning they simply drop ship to you or the store - That Sucks. I can buy the same exact shoes on line for less. FYI - the young guy trying to be helpful was wearing cheap shoes. The only leather sole shoes they had cost about $400 out the door. The only reason they got two stars instead of one, is that the inexperienced guy who tried to help me was truly making his best effort. As for the Manager/Owner, well let me put is this way. Whoo hoo! I am one happy girl today because I found a pair of shoes that fit my nearly-impossible-to fit feet. If you have a really hard time finding shoes that fit, I highly recommend Bodell's. I've been to more wide shoe stores than probably anyone else on this planet and a lot of them didn't even have a pair of shoes in my size that were wide enough for my little feet. Put it this way, I've tried on shoes that were EEE that were still too narrow. If I ruled the world, I would just wear New Balance shoes every single day of my life but unfortunately, I don't, and I have to look somewhat respectable when I go to work. As a 40 something, I remember a time when you would walk into a shoe store and the seller would crouch next to you and measure both your feet, then bring you multiple pairs to try on. The seller would then press his or her finger on the shoe to see how it fit and would make recommendations on that basis. Those days are largely over as mom and pop shoe stores have been replaced with a hellscape of corporate chains. I stumbled into Bodells with a few friends of mine while we were getting coffee in the area. A true blast from the past in terms of customer service. Mr. Bodell helped each of us, took his time, measured both feet, made solid recommendations, and really knew the story behind each shoe manufacturer and each shoe he was selling. He actually recommended against an expensive shoe I was looking at given that he was concerned regarding the fit. The prices were on par with the internet or perhaps a tad more--but you pay for experience and time. I ended up buying a pair of Birkenstocks and an Allen Edmonds pair of saddle shoes and then doubled back a few weeks later for a pair of loafers. This is where I will buy all of my shoes from now on. Resist the urge to go to the mall or chains. This is an old school shoe buying experience. Couldn't be happier and I hope they stay in business for another 50 years. read more

This store should not be doing business online. I placed an order on September 26. It is now November 13, and it was NEVER SHIPPED, even after MULTIPLE PROMISES for shipping, and not one apology for the 7 WEEK delay. If they did not have an item in stock, there should have been a note on the item's page on the site to indicate an approximate availability date. I'm not sure that I would have ordered to begin with, if I had known that they didn't actually have the item in stock. After ordering (and providing my credit card info), the transaction appeared to be like any normal website, like Zappos, etc. Then I received an email indicating that the item would not be available until 10/15. Okay, I'm a pretty patient person. I inquired on 10/16. I was told (untruthfully) that "the item will ship within 72 hours." Nothing shipped. I inquired on 10/28. I was told, untruthfully, that the item will "ship/charge on Monday 11/3/14." Nothing shipped. I inquired on 11/6. I was told, untruthfully, "We received in our warehouse your shoe. As such, will ship no later than Tuesday 11/11/14." At this point, I've requested a cancellation of my order, and fingers crossed that my credit card will not be charged. I am now concerned that I gave this business my credit card info. I can't believe that this business would actually LIE to customers, telling people that their order will ship on certain dates, for weeks on end, as if that can pass as customer service. Never was there even an apology for the delay. I'm disappointed in this experience to say the least. read more

A great shoe shopping experience! I was looking for some comfortable shoes that fit my feet well. I have difficulty finding shoes my size since I have larger feet. I felt like I went back in time when service was extra special. My feet were measured and my needs took into account, and I got a variety of shoes to try on. I loved that the shoes were taken out of the box and actually put on my feet. All I had to do was walk around the store in them to determine if I liked the feel and fit. They had many to choose from, which is never the case for me at other stores. They knew exactly what would work for my foot type. It was painless, easy shoe shopping like it used to be 40 years ago. I had to go in since my mom was taking forever "browsing" for shoes and was pleasantly surprised. Mostly high end comfort type shoes as well as kid shoes too. There's a trolley inside the store! It kept My 2 year old occupied while my mom spoke with the well educated salesman about the shoes she eventually bought. It was packed with elderly but the guys there work fast in tending to customers. I noted one guy was respectful to one old lady's looooong story about how they used to make shoes back in the day. I picked out the red pair with the stars in the front. the size fit well. the staff helped me try them on, and I even walked around the stor for a while to make sure I would not get blisters. I found this store listed as a local retailer on the website of a brand of shoes I was looking for. Of course I checked yelp, and I admit I was scared to go in here after reading all those reviews about "a grumpy old man." That's often code, and in mom and pop shops you never know how "people like me" will be treated. Well, I got my answer as soon as I walked in. The owner, Richard, was the kindest, most courteous sales person I've met in a long time. Truly from a different era, but in a good way. He was so patient and helpful bringing me a gazillion different shoes to try on because I didn't really know what I was looking for. My feet are uneven, but he had all these strategies to position those little grip inserts in different parts of the shoe to make it fit right. That was complimentary. He was working solo, and took care of me and 2 other customers who walked in while I was there (of course I took the longest!) with a smile and absolutely no high pressure sales tactics. I left with a beautiful and comfortable pair of boots that Richard fitted for me. The best part is that their prices are exactly the same as msrp on the websites of the shoes they sell. That makes it a total no brainer to buy from them and support a local shop. Plus they sign you up for a rewards program, so you know I'll definitely be back. read more

If you shop here, make sure you really love the shoes you buy - they will NOT take returns or exchanges! Never mind the fact that the receipt says "no returns or exchanges after 30 days". This is not Nordstrom. The owner thinks he knows everything about what you need and doesn't listen to a word you say. The customer may be right, but NOT at this store! I paid $165 for shoes that make my toes go numb, the veins on top of my feet pulse, and I can't wait to take off! Yet he refused to take them back or exchange them after I wore them twice. I recently purchased a pair of a well known brand of high quality athletic shoes from Bodell's and after a short time I found that the fabric was becoming unstitched. I took them back to Bodell's and they professionally gave me a replacement. When the replacement also had the same problem, the owner of the store gave me a full credit and told me he was going to contact the manufacturer to arrange for a free pair of shoes from the manufacturer for my inconvenience. I happily received the new shoes at my home yesterday. I came in about a week and a half ago to buy my first pair of Birkenstocks. I wanted to support a local business rather than some big-chain retailer or through the website. The gentleman who measured my foot was very kind and professional and was able to find the last pair in the color I wanted after checking the back a second time. However, as I walked around in the shoes over the next week, they felt loose and I could see a definite space between my feet and the walls of the footbed. Not to mention they *looked* big on my feet, not like how they looked on others I have seen wear them. Unfortunately, I, who usually keep boxes and receipts months after they're needed, already threw away my shoe box and my receipt somehow got faded with water. I do remember that the receipt said no exchanges or refunds after shoes have been worn, and these had definitely been worn--they'd already molded to my feet. And I hate to be *that* customer that comes in, unprepared and against the clear policies of the store. But I just had to give it a shot to see what they could do for me, since I LOVED the shoes, they just felt and looked a little too awkward for me to look past. So I went in this morning, and fortunately for me, Mr. Richard Bodell was there. He was SO nice and kind and accommodating and apologetic for the incorrect fitting. Even though they were out of stock of the color I had originally wanted, he was able to order my second-favorite right away. I bought 2 pars of shoes from young Mr. Bodell. This is a real shoe store, they measure your foot and wait on you! All done with polite, professionalism. They had quite a selection of comfortable shoes. I bought a pair of SAS Mary Janes and a pair of NAOt. Shoes. Both are fantastic, so comfortable and stylish too! I purchased about a month ago. Please tell old Mr. Bodell that young Mr. Bodell is carrying on a great tradition and doing a great job! Oh, notice the antique Buster Brown behind the counter. He is real too! I feel bad for the employees who have to work for such a rude and unhelpful old man who barks at the customer unintelligibly from the back of the store and then throws shoes at the younger guy waiting on me, that I can't even wear.
