Tried to stop in for some good grub around Christmas (2011) but was unfortunate, they had sold out all of their barbecue earlier in the day. On a whim we decided to try our luck on New years Eve and were happily surprised. The place was dead by the time we stopped in so we had the full attention of the staff in their cafeteria styled food line. I'd like to special mention their staff that day. Something I found profound was the attitude of their staff. When asked what meats we would like, bro replied that he'd had ribs earlier in the week. Both ladies responded, "not these ribs you haven't" going on to talk about their meats. They took ownership of the product they were promoting and spoke of it highly. It's a marvelous thing when an employee speaks highly of their foods. For argument's sake one could bring up the fact that Bodacious is a family owned and operated business.
Two guys eager to try some good barbecue. We both opted for the combo platter because it allowed us to try two or three portions of meats with two sides and bread. I got pork ribs and pulled pork, bro got a trio of brisket, pulled pork and ribs. Before getting to the nitty gritty, I'll tell y'all that we both wished we'd opted for full slabs of ribs. The ribs were like candy, the rub on them almost sweet. Typically I could care less for burnt ends and usually chuck them. These were perfect, whatever rub on them was perfectly fused into the meat, you could say it just sung to me, sweetly. We both got bowls of warmed sauce but found it almost unnecessary when the meat was just.. perfect.
Back home in Chicago I'm used to eating meats drenched in sauce. Since we don't have the facility to smoke meats all of the time, that's how it's most always served unless the place specializes in smoked meats. As far as BB's brisket and pulled pork, we both felt the brisket was better than the pork. Since meats are smoked and prepared daily, of course their taste could differ on different visits. Brisket was good, pulled pork was just okay. (Later we took both to go and during reheating warmed them up tossed together with sauce, it went well together). As far as sides go, the beans looked tired and runny so I skipped those. Bro got'em and didn't care for them. BBQ beans are an integral part to good barbecue so I hope one day they opt to change it. Pasta salad was subtly sweet and was winner for me. Potato salad was meh and boring like plain mayonnaise usually is, I think the stuff you buy in bulk at a grocery store is better. Drinks are sold in bottles and Styrofoam cups and ice are available on the line. No fountain soda, though they could save some cash doing so and also win more of my favor by offering glassware or cups made from corn oils.
The place is decked out with olden day Texas cabin motif. Peep the photos I've uploaded for a better idea. Much of the time in Arlington one can find many restaurants of this type with cafeteria style in a vintage or Western age, wood inspired setting top to bottom. Tables, chairs, handicrafts, wagon wheels, etc. I've been to some others that were dilapidated and unnecessarily run down, the decor and atmosphere here is a good mix of touristy and homey for all. Bodacious bar-b-q should not be passed up. read more
