In an era when big impersonal chains dominate the landscape, indy supermarkets that have stood the test of time are rare and valuable. Bob's is one. It truly reminds me of the one my parents liked, Food Circus, back East where I grew up. We went every single Saturday, knew exactly what was where, and there were friendly faces who we could turn to with questions, to get a knowledgeable answer. Bob's has a big, open parking lot, a huge inventory of all the usual things but also a deep supply of specialties including exotic spices, ethnic foods and gourmet imported and domestic wines. I especially appreciate their baked goods. Every so often, I want to be catered to. I want to find something new and surprising, and I don't want to have to worry about where I am going to park to get it. Also, it makes me feel good to support a family store like Bob's and not just worry that I shaved the last penny off of every item on my list. Charlie, our cashier was the soul of cheer, the entire place is clean and bright. We found everything we wanted and even some things we didn't expect (like the freshly made olive bread -- see my photos). If you are anywhere near Bob's, stop in and remind yourself of what the "super" in supermarkets was supposed to stand for.

June 6, 2025 | Santa Monica | My neighbor introduced me to Bob's Market on Friday & treated me to lunch to go via the deli! She's been going to Bob's Market for years and speaks highly of the market! Market: Neat, organized, and also filled with specialty items throughout, which the price reflects! Deli: Popular, as there were several people in line in front of us! People here were Immediately friendly while we were ordering! Thanks again for your kindness & plenty of smiles! Salmon: I immediately said yes, when asked if I wanted butter and capers added... Delicious & wildly flavorful! I love capers!! Mac & Cheese: Yum! Cheesy and tasty! Lemon Cake: Tasty, incredibly lemon-y & very fluffy! Haha! Located in the grocery part of the store Personality Plus: Customer service is friendly throughout! Parking: Free & plentiful! Overall: When I'm looking for a specialty item and/or wanting a delicious and on the go meal while in Santa Monica, Bob's Market is a wonderful option! Their deli is awesome! Score!

This friendly neighborhood store sits in Santa Monica, along Ocean Park. It is a short walk where I often have get-togethers, and I sometimes walk here to get some food from their deli. My personal favorite from here is the grilled salmon, which I usually couple with steamed corn, veggies, mashed potato, and/or potato wedges. Their chicken is pretty decent as well. The food is good quality, tasting great and coming in pretty generous portions. The workers here are always attentive in their work, and check out is quick and seamless. Other patrons are usually locals to the area, and the surrounding neighborhood is safe and calm. This is a neighborhood gem in this part of Santa Monica, I'm glad to support this place. If you find yourself in need of great quality food, come check out their deli. Cheers!

PROOF THAT I AM A PAYING CUSTOMER

I work just down the street and used to stop by this place somewhat regularly, but after my most recent experience, I will never return. I went in on my lunch break, bought a Coca-Cola and a bag of chips--spending over $5--then sat at one of their outdoor tables to eat the rest of my lunch, which I had brought from home. Despite being a paying customer, an employee told me I wasn't allowed to sit there because I had outside food. Let me be clear!!! I paid for items in their store moments before sitting at their tables and I was polite and quiet, simply trying to enjoy lunch during a busy workday. The staff's response was rude, incompetent and unprofessional. There was no courtesy, no common sense, and no customer service. This place clearly doesn't value its customers, especially locals who support them regularly. Avoid this establishment--there are plenty of better options nearby that won't treat you like a nuisance just for sitting at a table.

Salads all look so fresh and delish!

It's so easy to get in and out, and since I temporarily live a 1/2 block away, it's especially convenient for me. This Santa Monica Trader Joe's is easily one of my favorites. The store is clean, well organized, and easy to navigate, with everything you'd expect -- pantry staples, fresh produce, and their famously affordable (and beautiful) flowers. What makes ALL Trader Joe's locations stand out, though, is their staff. The teams are always friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable, and they make every visit pleasant. The only downsides are: 1. The store is underground, there's basically no mobile service inside -- so definitely screenshot your shopping list before you go in. This makes looking up recipes impossible. They need to get store wifi for customers, like Vons. 2. It's a bit smaller than most other TJ's, but it still covers most of what I need. And if they don't have something, there's a newly opened Vons just two blocks up Broadway. Overall, this is a gem of a store in a fantastic location -- truly one of the best grocery spots in Santa Monica.

It's usually been an older crowd that's wanted whatever health products were popular 10-20 years ago. At one point during the late 90's and early 00's, it was tremendously popular with the celebrity class of LA, and it was Erewhon before there was Erewhon. It has since drifted into a more relaxed, slightly frumpier incarnation now in 2026. As you can see from all the 1 and 5 star reviews, it's a place that inspires both stubborn loyalty and intense frustration in equal measure, and I think that about sums up experience for the uninitiated. You'll see that I've split the difference with this 3 star review in an attempt to capture reality. This is far from a perfect grocery store -- the prices are high, a lot of the produce is not looking so good, the milk is always about to expire, the aisles are poorly organized, they're missing lots of things you want. But it's also a real co-op and not a chain, it's possible to eat healthfully from here, and they are extremely responsive to their member's (numerously and frequently delusional and extremely SaMo) requests. The angry reviews about bad service here are overblown; I've been here dozens of times and never had a problem. And as long as it's member-owned, it can always change for the better very quickly, which I've seen happen here before, and may happen again. Personally, my reason for not shopping here is just the poor organization of the store overall, selection of dry goods which are widely second-rate to me, and shabby, soon-to-be-expiring produce and perishables attached to a luxury price. I see no reason to shop here when I have the SaMo farmer's market AND better organized specialty stores like Erehwon or McCall's right near by -- which are, despite what numerous reviews here desperately proclaim, the exact same price point as Co-Opportunity. I hope this clears up why the reviews here are all-over-the-place, it's because the store is too!

So that takes up more room with two bodies standing there where it's literally where I can't maneuver or move and then the other customers are trying to maneuver and move through this maze as well. It makes me not want to shop there because it's a lot of stress just to be able to maneuver and squeeze around these crates and then the to employees that are supposed to unpack those or just standing there and talking. The sandwiches are solid and very reasonably priced. Two things stand out for me here: their weekend barbecue and the tamales. Someone in their kitchen makes delicious Oaxacan tamales (which are not always available). These tamales are chock full of chicken mole -- perhaps the highest ratio of filling to masa that I've had -- and are neatly wrapped in banana leaves.
