If I weren't in Washington right now, I'd definitely be at Bob's! It is such a gem. After a week of being dragged to chains and "name-brand" restaurants, the boy and I were dying for some local food! Thank you YELP for navigating me to Bob's! Bob's serves up traditional Hawaii bbq grub out of a trailer-like building structure with a crappy parking lot with a fabulous view of McDonalds across the street while sitting on picnic tables. And my was that grub good. (I'm tearing up writing this now since I'm an ocean away). We were able to come here a couple times and had the mixed plate, chicken katsu, and kalua pork. I tried the latter two options in the small size. All the food was fantastic and the mac salad is perfect. The prices are very reasonable. Don't let the exterior fool you. Whenever I drive by Bob's BBQ in Kalihi, the smell of the barbeque smoke billowing from this eatery makes my mouth water. Popular items on their menu include grilled burgers; barbeque pork, chicken and beef; and baby back ribs. Since I was in the area one early evening, I stopped by to order their beef rib (kalbi) plate. My rib plate was heavy from the thick pieces of ribs which made it impossible to cut with a plastic knife. With no patience to cut it with a plastic knife and hunger pain building in my stomach, I immediately picked up a piece of rib and took bites out of the meaty ribs. It was so good. Although it was slightly chewy, these were tasty ribs. The ribs were marinated in a flavorful sweet barbeque sauce. But it ended up being a mess to eat. I must say that the portions are good as my plate of ribs, rice and macaroni salad was very filling. read more

I think food here is a hit or miss depending on what you order. My husband got the korean beef and teriyaki chicken plate and I opted for korean beef and shrimp. Shrimp was what I thought it would be, sort of prefab and fried, but I was hungry so it was ok. The beef wasn't the biggest portion but they do give you plenty of rice and macaroni salad. We're avoiding access carbs so we probably should have asked for salad or veg substitutions.. Only I read the sign AFTER we had already paid and were sitting a while. I used to come here often with my photographers when I worked in news. My husband and I stopped off on a Sunday. He got ribs and I got the mahi mahi. Bummer! Such a disappointment this time. My fish was overcooked, tasted VERY BITTER. Maybe they used old oil and just overcooked it. Not tasty at all. Icould only eat a few bites despite my hunger. I closed up the plate lunch package and took it home thinking it was "just me". Tried the mahi mahi later and it was still bitter, it wasn't me. Husband got the ribs. They were HUGE.They looked ono! Since I live in the area and was starving, I figured, why not give Bob's a go since I've heard good things. And boy was I...glad I did!! I mean yes, Zippy's is everywhere and they serve all the local food you usually want at any time of day...but come on now, with the price of a Zip-Pac upwards of 9 bucks, forget it. I would much rather pay more than that and get a delicious rack of ribs...which is exactly what I did, now onto the food. Ordered the Baby Back Ribs and a Giant Cheeseburger. Total came out to $17. Yes, this is a lot for just one meal. But I can eat a crap ton, so this is what I'm used to paying and I'm totally okay with it. Plus, I got enough food to last a normal person 2.3 meals. Food came out fast and smelled amazing. Took a bite of the Cheeseburger, tasted almost exactly like W&M's. Now I'm a big W&M fan and have been for a while. Bob's burger tasted nearly the same, but was bigger and juicier. Came with the same condiments and also had the same burger sauce they put on the bun. At $4.30 plus tax, and considering the size, I might just go here if I want a classic Teri-burger. As for the ribs, their BBQ sauce is pretty good, not the best, but decent for what you pay. I mean come on now, $12 for a half rack of ribs, 2 scoops rice and mac salad...can't go wrong. The ribs were tender, not fall off the bone, but still succulent. And the mac salad wasn't half bad either. I will definitely be coming back here whenever I'm craving local style BBQ food and don't wanna pay out the ass at Zippy's. I grew up in Hawaii and love a good o'l bbq plate lunch any time of day. I now live in the mainland and miss the local kine grinz just like any other Hawaiian I've met here. Bob's was one of my favorite fast food places to eat. Every time I go home to visit, I make a pit stop at Bob's before I get to my destination. I just made a trip back home in April, and besides my husband, I brought (6) other friends home with me. They new the plan and was happy they agreed to try it because they loved Bob's as much as I do...even purchased the famous teriyaki sauce to take back home with them. I guarantee you won't be disappointed, the prices are great and the portions are huge! Maybe some day Bob's will branch out to the east coast so people here can experience the ONO bbq we do back home. read more

I'm a bit torn about reviewing a place I haven't actually eaten at, but I'm disabled (paraplegic) and use a wheelchair, so when I find a place totally inaccessible to a person in a wheelchair, I feel compelled to comment. So I'll rate Bob's right down the middle, three stars, to minimize the effect of my vote. I mention Bob's in my review of Sizzler on Dillingham because we were looking for a cheap, air conditioned, sit down lunch. Bob's prices looked okay, but seating choices are a couple of picnic tables or in your car. Strike one on our lunch preferences. Strike two, as mentioned already, was the place is totally inaccessible to a person in a wheelchair... totally. Can't even get within 10-15 feet of the order window. Strike three? I'm guessing they don't have a restroom for customers as one diner relieved himself standing next to the roll-off garbage receptacle for anyone/everyone to see. Neither the sight, nor the smell of urine on hot pavement, is appetizing in the least, I must say. So... Bob's may be an okay burger and fries joint, but if you're mobility impaired or need to use the rest room, pass on by. read more

Bob's BBQ has some good local food. The prices are very reasonable and the portions are good. I like the plate lunches as well as the burgers. This is my favorite place to get mahi burgers and BBQ chicken. They also have huge "giant" fries that are very tasty. The mahi burger has a good slab of breaded, deep fried mahi with tarter sauce. The deluxe version has lettuce, onions, and tomatoes and you can add cheese for a little extra. The BBQ chicken has awesome flavor. I like to get the combination plate that comes with fried shrimp. I've only eaten here for lunch and used to come frequently when I worked in that area. It gets crowded but the food comes out fast. There is a good amount of tables to eat at. My husband and I ordered a plate her right before our flight back to the main land. It did not disappoint us. You get a huge portion for the amount you pay. There was a lau lau special going on when I ordered our food and I had to jump on that. It came with kalua pork, rice, and mac salad. Everything was good except the pork was dry. The lau lau wasn't the best, but it hit the spot. The chicken katsu was very good. They give you just the right amount of sauce too. read more

This plate lunch joint is located right across from McDonald's and adjacent to Taco Hell on Waiakamilo Road. Parking can get pretty tight, so I've seen a few people park their cars in the Unlimited Wireless lot right next door. The shrimp burger is basically three pieces of shrimp tempura, cabbage, and tartar sauce sandwiched between a white bun. The tartar sauce can be pretty heavy at times, but I like it. ENVIRONMENT: This is not your nice restaurant or even a Yummy's BBQ like dining in. The seating is out door and on bench table type of eating area. The tables can get sticky of people not knowing how to eat nicely...but just wipe it down and you'll be ok. NO PUBLIC RESTROOM. This place has been here for awhile so expect fine dining cater to you kind of style. They have recently expanded their parking which is great now because before parking was a pain in the behind (if you know what I mean). FOOD: This is the main reason for this review. Duh! I try to order different items on the menu every time I come here but I tend to migrate back to my fave. HIBACHI CHICKEN . Something about that hibachi sauce that makes BBQ chicken taste better than ever. They have daily specials so take a look at that because once it's sold out...it's SOLD OUT. I tend to come for lunch and dinner but from time-to-time I'll come for breakfast if I wake up early. Their Loco Moco is less than $4 for breakfast. Score! But another big plus for this place on food is that they serve their side items on the side! No joke. You know some places put their mac salad in the same take out plate with rice and whatever else you ordered...Not here. They literally put the side in a different container. No more mixing of different food items. For those who don't like to mix their meat, gravy, salad, rice, etc this is the place for you if you're looking for BBQ food. Bob's malnutrition shack in the house. Stay away from the beef ribs; untrimmed, tough, and all around bad. Hit the baby backs if you're not much of a bbq person, and you'll like them. Don't bother with the salad as it is 100% chopped iceberg with some dressing on the side. As I wasn't a native and don't eat 500 lbs of fatty meat and rice at one sitting, I didn't have space to hit the short ribs. Everyone in the universe can throw down some teriyaki, so I didn't think of it. If I'm having teriyaki, it'll be from some more asian place and not a permanent roach coach staffed by pissed off people. read more

Let me just start by saying that this place looks absolutely adorable. From the large light up sign in the corner parking lot to the quirky and aged tables and benches, this place definitely has character. The food is good and price is fair, but portion wise, I was a little underwhelmed which was a surprise to me because I heard they usually are very good with their portions. I'm usually a small eater and at other plate lunch places, a mini is more than enough for me and so I purchased a mini chicken katsu for just under $7 here (a little more than L&L or comparable restaurants, but still not considered overpriced I would say) but to my surprise, it wasn't enough food for me. The mini portion was, well, definitely miniature. Maybe the other mini plates that they have offer a little more bang, but I wasn't very satisfied with my order and I probably should've ordered the regular had I known. Overall, it is a cute establishment and I received service with a smile. I definitely recommend checking out this cool joint but it might have been a good idea to check their portions before ordering! read more

I've eaten here for over 20 years. This is the first time that I was disappointed. I ordered their famous Giant Cheeseburger. I had taken it out so when I got home, I opened the container and I picked up the burger, the bun was super hard and dry. You could feel it as soon as you touched it. I took one bit and the entire bun fell apart. I couldn't even enjoy the sandwich, the dried out bun just killed it. How can the cook even put this giant cheeseburger in the container and serve it to a customer? Would he have eaten it if it was served to him? What a bad experience, I didn't feel like driving back to Bob's to return it, I just threw it away. read more

Upon getting out of my car, I noticed that this place looks semi rough. Dare I say, borderline real life! I ordered the BBQ chicken plate which turned out to be pleasantly mediocre. The plate included; rice, mac salad (also blah blah blah), and BBQ chicken which was good. Very moist and tasteful. However, I just expected more. Like I totally hyped up my taste buds for some juicy BBQ chicken drenched in some killer savory sauce. And yeah, the wow factor, totally missed the boat. Total let down. Portion wise, very healthy. No complaints in that department. Ooh, the giant fries are wicked tasty! Fat, crispy, potato wedge goodness. Total nom nom style. I need to definitely come back and try something else from the menu. Bruh, BOB's is a must go to! The potatoe wedge slices are perfect, fried and nice and soft in the middle just how i like it. Usually like to order the loco moco, I've ordered baked beans with polish sausage once and baby back ribs. Everything on the menu looks really good, I will try something different in the future. Try the pulled pork sandwich (without lettuce...who puts lettuce on a pulled pork sandwich, anyway?) Make sure to flip the sandwich over ASAP (while its still in the container) the lower half of the bun will disintegrate within seconds if you dont, because of all the freakin juices. Grabba fork...you'll need it. Hint: If you get indigestion easy, better take a Zantac about an hour before you get here, or you'll need like three tums later. I just thought the place looked dirty and run-downed (no offense!). But today, I was like "What the hell..." Of course I had to do my Yelp check first, see what was the "must have" dish. I soo love how Yelp has the Review Highlights section, it's my way of deciding what to order. Of course you can't go wrong with what everyone likes! Anyway, the Review Highlights said the Hibachi Chicken was good... So I went with that. Place serves standard BBQ lunch plates. Don't get it mistaken for Korean BBQ places... cause it's not! The Hibachi chicken was prepared on a flame grill, chicken served tender and drenched in the BBQ sauce, the sauce kinda taste like McDonld's McRib! Best way I could describe it. Lol Served on a bed of lettuce, two scoops rice, and mac salad. First thing I noticed was where the heck was the Mac salad! (cause other reviews said it was good) The plate didn't include it, and I was like... Oh maybe that ran out, but it was served separate in a tiny Styrofoam cup (thought it was extra BBQ sauce) Opened it up... Duh it was my Mac Salad haha... In all chicken was good... something different from teri chicken. Other reviews said the Kalbi was delish as well so it'll be my excuse to visit this place again. Not in the near future tho... I only come here for their LOCO MOCO. It's not that their other food is not good. I actually haven't tried anything else. It's just that the only times I find myself coming here is before work and so I'm always in the mood for breakfast. What I like about their loco moco... Is the gravy! It's not like any where else I've tasted and it has a sweeter taste rather than a salty one compared to others. I'm not big on Teri burger but got the Teri burger and it was good!! My husband had the giant burger and he was happy with it. Mmmmm, barbecue sauce. Mmmm, mmm, mmmmmmm. Oh and the baby back ribs? Yah, they were pretty good. Not as tender as I'd like and not as meaty as I'd like, but I LOVE THE SAUCE! Oh and the mac salad! If you don't like it oniony, you will love Bobs' mac salad. I ate half of my "snack"-sized plate and I was stuffed. I had a teri beef plat and a saimin. The food was "okay"--nothing special--nothing I'd crave to eat again. The portions were just "average," and actually seemed a little small for the price. The saimin was a rip-off because it was the little S & S plastic container with a lid that you add water to.
