It wasn't until WE called the captain at 6:30, when no one showed up at the boat, that he told us that he's sick and was not coming. Our group was understanding that people get sick but why was it at the time that the charter was going to start that we were told it's been cancelled? We went to the store to get our money back and I have never seen such poor customer service. When we asked why we weren't notified sooner by management, the manager told us he wasn't awake and basically said sorry about your luck. We wasted time, gas money, and a beautiful morning of the one week of vacation we get a year only to be treated like an inconvenience. read more

Showed up at 8:10 pm because the website says that in-season hours (between Memorial Day and Labor Day) are 6:30 am to 9:00 pm. The door was locked. A worker says they're closed through the door. I double checked the website to again find it says in season until 9:00 pm. We needed bait for my kids to do some fishing. I'd just ask to make sure your hours on your website are accurate. Edit: I did go back the next morning and they couldn't have been nicer. Very helpful with getting what I needed for my kids to have a fun experience. Prices were reasonable for sure. I've traveled and fished all over the US and I have never heard of a bait shop that opens after 7am. Prices are generally reasonable for this area and the stock is typical for a tourist area. It's clean inside. I've only met 2 people that work here. One guy was a bit of a D-Bag the other guy was nice. I've also used them to charter fishing trips and they have been good with that. Captain Matt was one of the better inshore captains but I don't know if he works here anymore which is a shame. I'm giving them 2.5 stars because if you're a bait and tackle shop be open at bait and tackle hours otherwise it would be a 3-3.5 star. read more

If you plan to fish or crab in the OBX you need to stop at Bob's. They will have anything you need - crab line, nets, and chicken necks for crabbing; countless styles of fishing poles and line, whether you are fishing in the sound or the surf and bloodworms for bait. You can also get styrofoam coolers to gather your catch and fishing liscense to make it all legal unless you are a child! Last - want to get adventurous and take a half day or day long charter - you can book one here. read more

Tried booking a make up charter through Bob's for the week of 4th of July with my dad. Called 2.5 weeks in advance and was told we were first on the list but never received a call so I called them back and they were unable to set up a charter the two days we requested. However, they mentioned they could set one up later in the week but with only 5 people on a 6 man boat it would be a little more. I agreed, but the day before the charter, I didnt get a call again so I called them. They had no knowledge of the planned charter and said it's not happening. I should have booked directly with the Oregon inlet charters or the headboats. read more

Here for Thanksgiving and wanted to take the family fishing. Worst $500 I have ever spent. 4 hours sitting in a boat trolling with no fish. I would not recommend. Now I am not giving 1 star because we didn't catch any fish, but because they didn't take care of me as a customer. Being from out of town, we don't know what's biting or where to fish, and we're not fishing because we don't have anything to eat but to be entertained. All we really wanted was some action, and it wouldn't have mattered if we had to throw everything back at least we would of been doing something besides sitting and watching the boat drive in circles. It was so boring that at one point or another, three of us took naps. And to add insult to injury, there wasn't even an apology from the captain for not catching any fish. Technically we got just what we paid for "a four hour fishing trip". Look, if you want a fishing trip where they at least pretend to be interested in making sure you have a good time, pick a different charter. But, if you'd like an experience like ours that is so boring that half of group falls asleep and you leave feeling like a sucker who just got taken for $500, then this is definitely the one to book!!! read more

The staff at Bob's are nice enough, and helpful, but the extended half day charter (6 hours) my group and I purchased was the worst. I know they don't own the boats, but they at least should know who the go in business with. Worst charter we ever had. Extended half day, which Bob's says takes you out several miles, NO WAY. Could see shore the entire time, could have even swam back if we had to. We booked this to get out further and catch some big fish. The crew on the Hayden Express boat were not personable and not at all helpful. We caught 38 little, tiny, blue fish which was barely 10 pounds cleaned. Most expensive fish dinner I ever had. Bob's is okay, but if this is the people they deal with, we'll pass. WOULD NOT RECOMMEND read more

This was my family's first trip out. Captain Troy and Mate Watson didn't disappoint!!! They put us on the fish and both were very helpful and knowledgeable!! We've been vacationing to the Outer Banks now for over 20 years. We usually rent a house in either Southern Shores or Duck. One of my favorite things to do while there is to walk to the beach around 5 in the evening or so and surf fish - it's just amazingly relaxing. What's great about Bob's is that they are always unbelievably helpful. they tell you exactly what's biting, what people have been catching on the pier, from the surf - you name it. Then they'll explain anything you need to know as far as tackle, bait etc. They also have great deals on equipment. You can get a great surf rod and reel for 30 or 40 bucks if i remember correctly. They're definitely as good as it gets for great friendly service. read more

We were in town and in need of a bait and tackle store so we found this on Yelp. All the reviews are correct. The service was superb! He was very helpful and knowledgeable. He even helped us rig our poles up with what we needed to catch reddrum. He then gave us all the needed information to get our temporary fishing license. The prices were all reasonable. Won't even go into too much detail about the disaster of a "fishing trip" that me and my group had. I want to mainly talk about how terrible the customer service at this establishment is. For context our trip was sub par and instead of actually going to a spot and fishing we just trolled through about 2-3 spots not stopping during which most of the time spent trolling our poles weren't even down. The captain didn't give us any instruction and instead just dragged us around for over $500. The captain was nice and everything but very disorganized. Here's where things get way worse and I wouldn't even be writing this review if the man at the business's counter handled this professionally. We came inside and were very pleasant when we explained that we did not get the kinda of trip we paid for and explained we were not angry because did not catch anything besides a stingray. We were angry because we didn't get to actually use the poles except that one time and our group mostly napped through the trip. The mans reaction was to laugh at us and treat the whole ordeal as a big joke. He put all the blame on us and did not try sympathizing one bit with his customers. Instead he said we would have to talk to the captain which was fine with us. But while he tried to get a hold of the captain on the phone he spent the whole time arguing with us even though he expressed prior to that he didn't want to fight with us about it because it's all on the crew and not him. When I asked him "Is this really how you do business?" He just brushed it off smiling the entire time. We got the captains number and left. Nice crew but not organized. Guy at the counter needs an attitude adjustment. Better customer service can be found in any fast food restaurant than this joke of a business. read more

Terrible customer service. Make sure you know what you're looking for when you go in, otherwise the older gentleman working behind the counter will make you feel like an idiot. I vacation in Duck and enjoy to fish off the shore with my 10 yo daughter from time to time. I generally try out different bait and tackle shops in the OBX area while I am in the area. I had a terrible customer experience from the minute I walked in the door. I was treated like I was about to rob the place. Like I said, unless you know exactly what you're looking for or are familiar with the process of buying a fishing license for the week, I would highly avoid this place. read more

Not only were the store employees not friendly, they also refused to give our deposit back because there was some sand on the rod that was used at the BEACH (where it's kind of hard to avoid sand). I guess you need to power wash everything before giving it back to them and don't miss one grain of sand. read more

I was in the Outer Banks for a Wedding an wanted to do some fishing. I did not want to bring my gear. I called a different place earlier in the week to ask if they rent rods and reels. When I got to the other place, they told me they don't rent stuff at this time of year. they seemed annoyed that I would ask. I called Bob's and drove over, The guys were super helpful and easy to talk to. They got me what I needed. My son and I had a great time. When I came back to return the gear, I ended up buying two reels. The price was ok, but I like to support the local guys. This is the best place for all your fishing needs. read more

I called Bob's Bait and Tackle the Wednesday before my arrival in Duck on October 6. The clerk was most helpful and courteous. I went into the store last week. It was about the same as the store close to me as far as the fishing equipment is concerned. There is a large selection of rods and reels ranging in price from the inexpensive to the best available short of custom made. A large selection of Penn reels is available. Line, lures, sinkers other equipment is available. I wanted to purchase just a minimum amount of mullet as I would not fish more than a few hours. The clerk-Chuck- took my container and put 3 mullet in it. When I asked the price, I was informed that it was complimentary, and I was wished good success at fishing either from the sound or from the surf.
