Groovy Southern food meets refined semi-upscale downtown. What do we get?…read moreBreaded okra. Kiss my grits, but we aren't always talking BBQ when we're in the South. I've had me some soul food in Mississippi and 'Bama, though at a fraction of the price you get up North. Look, it's a Montclair thing. Pluses: Black owned restaurant serving cultural staples, plus foods for people who don't want Southern. Ambiance featured soul music, and at one point was playing Shaft! I can dig it. You're not left wanting for food quantity or quality. Plenty of shrimp in the grits, for example. Server was very pleasant to talk to with a little Southern twang to her voice. Why not five stars: Flavor needs deepening. For example, in the South I'm used to seeing okra chopped and breaded before being fried. Maybe more oily that way, more carbs... but more flavor as a result. I had the pulled chicken mac, which was a bit smaller of a dish overall (a bit intentional on my part) - and while the cheese flavors run deep, the meat did not. Shrimp and grits, I took a quick sample of my friend's grits and... I bet you can guess my finding there. Still, a very nice change from the usual Northern selection of foods. I would not hesitate to say Sweet T's is authentic and a nice visit if you're in town. You'll be paying a pretty penny wherever you eat, so you can tag this one on your list.

Finally I did!…read more We started with the corn bread and sodas, I had the pulled pork Mac and my partner had the chicken and waffles. We were very hungry and excited! The wait staff was fantastic in waiting on us as well as offering us a seat immediately upon entry. There were many servers on the floor, availing if anyone needed anything. We mentioned it was our first time, the quality of explanation of the menu lacked. We didn't really understand or enjoy what we ate. Think it's important to mention we are both black women from the American South. Maybe we ordered wrong (which I don't believe in but .... I'll digress) Maybe it was a bad day Maybe I'll try again!! We'll see.

As a first-time visitor, I had a great experience. The restaurant was clean, had a warm, welcoming atmosphere, and the service was excellent. The staff was especially friendly and even let us sample a few of the sides before ordering, which I really appreciated. I ordered the fried fish with collard greens, plus a side of rice and gravy. Everything was flavorful and satisfying. The only reason I'm giving four stars instead of five is because I don't think the fish was actually catfish, which is what I was expecting. With that being said, it was still delicious. And I have to mention the cornbread...it was absolutely amazing! Overall, I'd definitely recommend Cornbread if you're looking for tasty, comforting soul food with great service.

They have absolutely no consistency I should be able to come this location and go to the one in maplewood and get the same quality. Ordered the catfish with Mac& cheese and yams. The Mac was tasteless, the catfish tasted as if it was soaked in grease. The yams were flavorless as well. And that cornbread was very soggy. Very disappointed!!!! This is not soul food.

They serve breakfast all day and have a vegan menu. The restaurant is connected to an apartment building so be careful not to pass when looking for it. It has a black & white striped triangular umbrella hovering over it. The staff were kind and the atmosphere was extremely down to earth, but not ghetto. This is a great mom & pop shop that you should fed check out. Be sure to try a flavored lemonade or iced tea. They are tall and one was more than enough. I didn't notice any ASL speaking staff, it wasn't needed, but there is space for wheelchairs. There is also street parking so be mindful. Only downside, our table wasn't exactly clean when sat down, but it was obvious they were busy. Overall, this is a great place for brunch or Sunday takeout dinner.

Food: chicken was very good and flavorful, grilled cheese was good and toasted golden brown. Waffles were bland thick and hard to swallow even with syrup still bland . The worst thing about my whole meal was my drink there was something floating in the bottom of my drink that no one could identify.

The restaurant wasn't busy, yet the food arrived cold, unseasoned, and completely disappointing, especially for a bill totaling $110. After waiting 20 minutes, our server returned to tell us there was no pulled pork... at 5 PM... during dinner service. How does a smokehouse run out of pulled pork before the evening rush? It didn't stop there. We ordered corn on the cob, but was served cornbread instead. When I asked about it, I was told the cooks "it'll take to much time," so we substituted mac and cheese for an extra $2. What arrived was flavorless, watery, and honestly it was embarrassing for a place that used to pride itself on BBQ. Between the cold plates, missing menu items, lack of flavor, and the overall indifference from the kitchen, this visit felt like a complete waste of money and time. But wait it gets better! After receiving the check, it displayed happy hour! Happy hour? We weren't informed upon entry, as we exited I told my partner I wanted to inquire about happy hour. Would have changed our dine-in experience. I'm sad to say it, but after this experience, I won't be coming back.
