I highly recommend Lite & Soul Eatery ! It is a small spot, but the food is absolutely worth the wait because everything is cooked fresh. The staff is warm and welcoming. I even met the owner, who was taking orders and cooking, and she was so personable. I had the ribs(falling right off the bone), Mac & cheese, greens, and a bean pie for dessert. Let me tell you, I had a full on itis ! Even the next day, the leftovers hit just as good. You can tell this place has loyal following, with people even coming from New York just to eat here. The food is excellent! But..the wait is rediculous. No matter how good it is, nobody wants to wait over 2 hours for food. There are plenty soul food restaurants where the wait is just long enough to maybe fry the chicken or fish. I was there twice and ordered for 3 angry people. We traveled a very long way to get food from this establishment. They ran out of almost everything we were ordering. And didn't even have some menu items. The ribs were over-cooked, macaroni and cheese was tasteless and cheese less, the turkey chops were very flavorful and well cooked but I ordered smothered and there was less than a drop of gravy present lastly the corn bread was very small-thin and left much to be desired. Apologies followers! I forgot to take a photo and I should have! For starters, I've NEVER seen fried salmon filets before. They didn't offer baked, poached, or grilled which I found surprising. I suppose frying the salmon equates to soul goodness. I decided to go for the unhealthy adventure. [lol]. It was huge which is a plus! Well cooked though more greasy than seasoned. The yellow rice was bland dot bland but thank God the yams were yummy. The oxtails were on the sweet side but good. The potato salad was actually good and warm. We ordered via UberEats which took 2.5hrs. I'm giving them 3 stars instead of 2 because I thought fried salmon was cool and an item that sets their menu apart - totally worth a try. Not to mention it was giant so totally worth the price! Finally, because overall the food was decent. I won't go back but I say give it a try at least - your tastebuds may love it. I had the whiting, yams & greens with a side of potato salad. My husband had the Hawaiian wings, mac and greens. I did not receive corn bread. I believe they ran out but from previous reviews I see that the platters come with cornbread. My husband went to get the food so he wasn't aware. Nor did the staff say anything. Now the reason I believe they ran out is because they ran out of mac & cheese. The guy serving the platters told my husband that he only had a corner left. This man took half of the corner of mac and gave it to my husband as a side. He might as well gave it to him for free. How do you consider half of a corner a side. This is why I DO NOT like to support African american soul food businesses and rather make my own damn soul food. Who does that? The portions are extremely small. I don't know if they were being preservative this particular day but no once wants to pay FULL price for half of a damn platter. Fish was mediocre (flimsy pieces of whiting) Hawaiian wings taste decent. Anybody can buy sauce to pour onto their chicken in other words. Mac was dry no flavor. They didnt have fries as a side, they ran out of shrimp so we couldnt order that, and they had no Hawaiian sauce. For it being a Monday afternoon, there is no reason to be understocked which is why i deducted stars. ( i love french fries) Now for the food, it was good. The wings were a bit small but they were not greasy. The mac was eh, the rice needed a lot of salt, and the yams were on point. The whiting fish was THE BOMB! They were big, fresh, juicy, and full of flavor. Defiantly worth the $1 per piece (3 piece min). I wanted to order cake but they didnt have that either. I ordered on Uber eats for pickup they marked my food as ready for pickup and then when I got there. Only had one ordered prepared. I told them I had two they had me wait about 30mins for my order. A lady came out didn't greet me but instead yelled I need to put on a face mask. The staff is in the back congregating, then they're not acknowledging you or keeping you informed of your order. Then they came out and told me that there was a mix up and they sent the order out if I want to take more Uber orders i can and come back then I told her no this is my food to take home for dinner. Then all of a sudden its coming off the grill. After waiting for 30mins the owner then wants to come out and apologize when I feel that should of been done when you first realized there was an error 30 mins prior not just have me standing there. I felt it was bad customer service and the owner said she doesn't care because its her business and she can operate it the way she wants too. And I can get my hostile ass out of her restaurant.... when I told her that she needs to train her staff to have better customer service skills and interaction her excuse is because they are new.
