Turkey chops in gravy with mac and cheese and yams.
Al'Turik F.

First time eating from this place and will not be my last. Ordered your food in advance if you can. Waited about a good 20 minutes for my order. I had the turkey chops in gravy with Mac and cheese and yams. So delicious Great customer service, only thing is that it's has a small area for seating.

The food was fantastic; I'm so glad I discovered this establishment!!! First and foremost, it is a Black-owned business, which I admire... and love. Second, Customer Service was excellent. The young lady who took my order was extremely friendly and sweet. They serve very generous portions, which is a bonus! Everything I purchased came to a total of $21! Every bite is flavorful, and you can taste the love and passion in every bite. We will undoubtedly return! 10/10 My takeout order consist of: Fried Whiting (4 pieces) Mac & cheese Potato Salad Candied Jam

As the self-appointed Nate Silver of Yelp, I've found that the item listed as the most popular is the best choice 47.2% of the time, but this rises to more than 70% if you exclude the myriad Thai restaurants whose reviewers overwhelmingly opt for Pad Thai. Therefore, when a Christmas miracle placed this faraway restaurant within the Uber Eats radius, I considered classics like fried chicken before switching to the Yelp-approved Hawaiian wings. Sure, this item featuring pineapple BBQ sauce might seem like a Gen Z-themed treat - to use Star Wars fan language, non-canon. But it turns out that Lite & Soul's skill with the sweet poultry dish you never knew you needed doesn't preclude excellence with more familiar fare. The sides were a standout mac and cheese with a hint of pepper, and a fine rendition of collard greens that masterfully showcases the tangy/sweet liquid without erasing the vegetable's natural taste.

Baked tilapia meal with 2 complimentary sides- Mac & Cheese and Candied Yams

Food: 9.7/10 truly hit the spot Ambiance/Aesthetic: family owned business vibes, nothing fancy but in the way you know you're about to get some delicious & authentic food Service: 10/10 staff very kind, welcoming, and attentive Price: 9/10 it's a bit on the pricey side for NJ but they pack it IN that box considering this whole meal cost $14 and I couldn't even finish it (no matter how badly I wanted to), I think it's very reasonable pricing Do I recommend: Absolutely Lite & Soul definitely puts their heart and soul into the cooking. The love could be felt from the moment I got greeted by the cashier to the moment I finished my meal. Very attentive staff, they make sure you're taken care of and satisfied with your meal. They really pack the food in- I didn't realize I had it in me to eat two huge tilapia fillets with those sides but it was so good I just had to. The Mac & Cheese was my favorite thing on the plate- seasoned really well, the right amount of cheese and baked perfectly. The Candied Yams were so soft and beautifully cooked- so sweet I'm counting it as dessert. And the Baked Fish was juicy, tender, and seasoned perfectly. Paired that with the tartar sauce and I think I'm in for the best food coma of my life. Many thanks to the chef and staff, I'll definitely be coming back

I go here often enough and the customer service is amazing. They also have rewards and an app now…read moreso I recommend getting your points. Nice black-owned spot with variety of vegan options and it is clean. There's space to dine-in and they are open on Sundays. The energy is also open enough where strangers will have a convo while waiting. Coming from Brooklyn, I'm happy to have this spot so close to where I am now. Savory: My go-to is the chickpea tuna sandwich. I've tried it on a roll, long sub, and gluten-free... highly recommend the long sub. It's way too messy on the roll for me. Typically get it with the works. The potato salad is also very good most of the time (sometimes the potatoes are a little undercooked). I've also had the macaroni salad and the fried mushroom sandwich which are also good. I definitely enjoyed the thanksgiving special with stuffing (highly recommend that if they bring it back this year). Tip: if ordering a hero and you don't see yourself eating the entire thing in one sitting, I recommend requesting for the sandwich to not be cut so you can cut it evenly on your own For baked goods: the peach cobbler is good and it comes in a cute cup with a little spoon. I've also had the lemon cake & rum cake. Would order all 3 again. Would love to see donuts or cinnamon rolls (hopefully without cashews or walnuts due to my allergy). DRINKS: I haven't had a drink there that I would get again. The teas are overwhelmingly sweet; hibiscus punch was a lot like kool-aid to me. I also don't recommend the matcha if you are a matcha snob. Harper's Cafe is a great black-owned spot for a consistently good latte and they use quality matcha if you want quality nearby. Great spot with lots of options, especially if you're looking for a black-owned spot to support.

I placed a cake order a week before my birthday photoshoot and provided a clear reference photo plus detailed instructions to the baker, Elizabeth, over phone and text. I even came in person to pay a $20 deposit because I wasn't comfortable giving my card over the phone. What I requested was simple: A white, heart-shaped cake with pearls, curtain detailing, black bows, and elegant black cursive writing that said "Chapter 30." Unfortunately, what I received looked nothing like what I asked for. * Photo 1: What I asked for * Photo 2: First attempt -- extremely disappointing * Photo 3: Second attempt -- still not what I asked for When I came to pick up the cake, I was visibly disappointed. The tall male supervisor apologized and told me, "I'll see if we can fix it. Please come back in the morning." I explained how inconvenient it was to come three separate times for one cake: once for the deposit, once for pickup, and again because of their poor quality. He assured me that the supervisor, Corrine, would call me the next morning about the revision and compensation for the inconvenience. That call never came. On the morning of my photoshoot, I had to call THEM to find out if the cake had even been fixed. Corrine sent a photo of the revised cake, and it still looked unprofessional. She said I would receive a refund if I remained unhappy -- yet I never received my apology, and I still never received my $20 refund. I'm sharing this review so others are aware. This bakery used to represent quality, but clearly that standard no longer exists. After showing the photos to friends and family, several revealed they've had similar disappointing experiences recently as well. The most embarrassing part? My mother named me after this bakery because of its reputation and legacy in Newark. After this experience, that association feels more embarrassing than meaningful. Calandra's bakery, do better. Your long-time loyal customers deserve far more respect and care than this.

Everything we had was awesome, from the lattes to the cheesecake. For entrees we tried the vodka chicken parm sandwich, their special pulled pork grilled cheese, and the chicken and waffles but had them switch the buttermilk waffle for the cornbread waffle. The cornbread waffle fell apart easily, but was very good! Blueberry cheesecake was phenomenal. We also tried the peanut butter latte and banana pudding latte. Both had great presentation but I preferred the banana pudding one, the caramelized bananas on top were also well done. All the sides with the meals were great and seasoned just right. Place is small not a lot of seating but we went on a Thursday afternoon. We were able to sit right away but I can imagine it gets crowded on the weekends. Not sure if it was because it was a slow afternoon but the service was rather slow and took thirty mins to get our lattes and never got our water. Towards the end of our meal because it took a long time we needed to hurry up and get out for meter and getting the check settled took a long time too. But I would deff go back to try other things and give the service another try.

The absolute best diner I've been to…read more The place itself is stunning. It's newly renovated but still has a diner feel, just with some upgrades like a live DJ and a solarium-like addition. Parking is also highly convenient. The menu is extensive and I can't wait to go back to try everything they have. There are the classic breakfast items of course, but they also have some innovative dishes or familiar dishes with a spin. I ordered the jerk chicken pasta which was spicy, so flavorful and also a great portion size. Others in our party ordered pancakes, which were so fluffy, eggs, fried chicken, fried catfish and more. Everything was fried to perfection and the catfish tasted like it had literally just jumped out of the ocean. Our waiter was super nice and we had a big party so I'm sure it wasn't easy. My only suggestion is that they make their hot drinks hotter. Other than that, I'd seriously come back every weekend.

READ FULL REVIEW!!!…read more March 2026: First time at this establishment was just ok. Hosted a very small get-together here (5 guest). Atmosphere was nice. Music was wayy too loud to hear the person you're sitting next to. Food was tasty and fresh. Coffee was good with great creamer selection (at the time). Our server was my least favorite part of this experience. He was over the top with his energy and upscale tactics (pushy with getting us to order extra drinks and appetizers despite declining). I was hosting this event and did not need him selling us after already being told "no, thank you" twice. It was awkward and ultimately changed the vibe. He hardly checked on us after that encounter and we constantly had to remind them about request that were never brought out to the table. Staff needs to be trained better. This was just an ok experience. April 2026 : What ultimately lead me to write this review was my 2nd experience at this diner. The server was a lot better than our first experience, but we did run into a few too many problems. First, we ordered coffee and are informed that per managements request, we can only have half-half or cream with our coffee. Previously they had French vanilla creamers and other flavored creamers but I guess management decided to save on the additional cost. This was a bummer especially realizing that they could easily afford creamers. This restaurant easily pulls at least $150,000 per week in revenue, so I didn't understand cheapening out like that. I still ordered the coffee. When it came to the table I added the cream into the cup only to find something floating in the coffee. I send it back and ask for a new cup, which the server politely provided. We order our meals and all goes well. Eventually two of the three meals come out and we wait for the final plate to come out. It's common courtesy to wait for everyone to have their meal before eating, so we wait. We wait about 6-7 minutes and the final plate comes out only for it to be cold. All of us ordered breakfast, so you can imagine trying to eat cold egg, potato, and sausage. We ask for the waiter, but before he could get to us the manager passes by and we let him know the issue. He takes the plate to the back and about two minutes later he comes back with the same exact plate. Before the manager arrived to take the plate away, I saw the guest split the egg half and add black pepper on everything so we knew it was the same plate and food she started eating off of that was reheated onto the kitchen grill where other food is being prepared for guest. The manager informs us that he had the chef heat the food up on the griddle and that it should be a perfect temperature. We refuse to accept the plate because it was reheated and not remade entirely. We were shocked that this was the solution even being offered. Reheating food on the griddle seemed unsafe (contamination risk, diseases, illness, etc) and offensive. No one pays these prices to have reheated breakfast served to them. I could've just made that at home for a fraction of the price. We politely refuse the reheated plate and he apologized and took the plate to the back. The server comes over to see what the issue is and we explain everything. He says that he will look into it and take that meal off the bill. Now I'm frustrated because one out of the three of us aren't eating anything and the experience was off. At this point, I'm not eating my meal but the 3rd guest is eating. So the guest who sent their plate back and myself are waiting for the 3rd guest to finish their pancakes. He ordered a stack of 4-5 chocolate chip pancakes and was happily eating away at layer by layer. Eventually he gets to the last 2 pancakes and before he adds syrup he notices what appeared to be an eyelash or short piece of hair imbedded in the pancake. Picture of the clearly imbedded hair included with this review. He immediately stopped eating and looks sick. He had already eaten 3-4 pancakes by then and the idea that he ate more of whatever that was felt unnerving, to say the least. We both start looking to see what he's looking at and long behold the hair was there. At this point we are extremely frustrated and completely over this experience. Management did not make this experience right even after addressing all of these issues both separately and together. I felt like my money was not valued and my business certainly wasn't. They did nothing to remedy these issues and I will NOT be going back to this establishment. This restaurant may look visually beautiful but the service is not. Staff needs more training, music needs to be turned down, chefs need to wear hairnets and everyone needs to follow safe food handling skills. You're putting your guest and your business at risk ignoring these issues. I really really wish I had a better experience.
