Chicken, yams and collared greens I've
    Natalie T.

Man this place was SO good. The best collared greens I've had in a long time, they're a must get. The catfish was fried perfectly and so flavorful, Mac n cheese did not disappoint, and the sweet tea was delicious. I want to try every side here - finger licking good.

When you think of soul food you think of southern hospitality. At least that is what I tend to think. But we are on the east coast and not the south. I did look at some other reviews and I can agree with a few of them that the service could be better. Some staff members were more friendly than others but a few seemed to have a bit of an attitude. As for the food, it was just okay. I did enjoy their cornbread and yams. The rice and gravy was okay and the fried whitening was okay. I didn't enjoy the fried whitening as much because it isn't deboned so you have to watch out for tiny bones while trying to enjoy the fish. I also ordered the peach cobbler and sweet tea which were good. Cornbread Newark pricing is also pretty fair. It isn't as expensive as other soul food restaurants.

As much as I have passed by this location in the past, I finally stepped in to try the food and was pleasantly surprised. We stopped by on a Saturday evening in late June and was greeted by the very lovely and extremely funny NaNa, whom was truly welcoming and helpful when it came to our menu selections. After some discussion with all the ladies, Nana, Kawana and Bernice, whom all offered valuable insight and on-point suggestions. We decided on a Fried Catfish plate with a side of yams and collard greens and a Baked Chicken plate with a side of yams and Mac & cheese. After great debate we elected to wash it all down with the "Manager's Special". The food was very tasty and well seasoned. The cornbread (the restaurant's namesake) was delectable. The protein (main) portions are great, however the side portions are minuscule in comparison. We both had mains to take home but our sides were finished quickly. In addition I wish that the temperature of the food was much hotter. Many of the sides are prepared and resting in a heated serving display however, the temperature wasn't hot enough imo. Overall we enjoyed our food and I must admit we thoroughly enjoyed the service we received from the trio of ladies on duty Saturday 6/21/25 @ 5:30pm Just A Note: Every plate comes with cornbread, I suggest you order extra. Thank me later.

Whiting with a side of Mac and cheese and yams

The service was quick and easy. The restaurant is a grab and go type of vibe, but has a vast section for seating. I got catfish meal with a side of mac and cheese and yams. Each meal automatically comes with a slice of cornbread. The whiting was good but could've used hint of more seasoning. The Mac and cheese were tasty as well. The yams were good but i personally like my yams on the sweeter side so they weren't my favorite. My friend got the bake chicken which she throughly enjoyed. She even took an order to go home, which told me all I need to know. Overall, if you are looking for a quick bite without the hassle, check out this local soul food spot.

The oxtails were tender, flavorful, and cooked perfectly The yams were soft and sweet, the cabbage was seasoned well, and the cornbread was delicious as always. The drink was cold and refreshing, and the staff was friendly and accommodating. Definitely a spot worth coming back to.

    Catfish with Sweet Potato

So interesting that on Google Maps Cornbread that thousands of review but on Yelp it is not that big. Came here before a concert and the food was pretty good. I really didn't expect this to be a fast casual but was not mad about it at all. I ordered Catfish with Sweet Potato and I didn't expect them to give me two full pieces of catfish. The catfish was delicious as the outside was extremely crispy while the inside was very tender. I also thought it went well with the sweet potato as it had a bit of carmelization to it. This might be the more authentic way to make catfish but I wish there was a bit more spices to it as it was a bit bland for my taste. Overall, if you're looking for a quick and solid eat, would definitley recommend coming to Cornbread.

OMG so delicious!! I'm already dreaming of the food and I just ate there! Everything made you go WOW when you put it in your mouth! Baked Turkey wings - Huge and so tasty!! Meat just falls off the bone. Absolutely delicious. Baked bbq pork ribs - geeez so tasty!! Tender soft meat with most perfect tangy sweet sauce. YUM. Cornbread was amazing!! So moist and more like a soufflé? Incredible! Really enjoyed the cabbage and the collards, though a tiny bit salty. Can't wait to be back in Newark to eat here again! Very nice staff too.

I have been wanting to try this place for a while now and I finally got to try it today. I ordered the three piece chicken w/ two sides, an uptown, and potato salad Chicken: 10/10. Juicy. Flavorful. Well cooked. I'm lucky I took a picture when I did, it didnt stand a chance once I tried it. Mac&cheese: 10/10. As much as I loved it, it may not be for everybody. I dont like an ooey gooey overly cheesy mac. This was perfect. Not overly cheesed but well cooked and flavorful. I'm glad I got it honestly because I almost didnt. Uptown: 8/10 paired well with the food. I dont know if I would drink it on its own. Candied Yams: 7/10 too many spices for my liking but I still ate all of it. Cornbread: I'm not going to rate this one but what I will say is it's not dry. Just wasnt my favorite thing to eat. Potato Salad: I wanted to like it soo bad but I wouldn't order this again. Just wasn't my preference but maybe you'd like it and I do like a more mashed potato salad. The veggies in it is where it lost me.

The food was delicious! The collard greens, mac&cheese, fried chicken, cabbage, and turkey wings were all full of flavor and cooked perfectly. THE CORNBREAD was TOP TiER, love me a cornbread that still has corn bits in each bite! Definitely will be making the trip out here again!

This was a STELLAR experience! My friends said that we should all try this place out before the Brandy & Monica concert, and I couldn't be happier that they did! This place felt like HOME! First off, the service is TOP TIER! There are many places that need to take note because the service I experienced was unmatched! It's a lovely set up with the full menu on display. I ended up ordering the whiting fish with a side of mac n cheese, and it was absolutely divine! Soul food at its FINEST! Don't call it soul food if there's no soul! The fact that they call it farm to soul is spot on because I tasted the love! The fish was so nicely seasoned and crispy! The Mac n cheese got me ready for Thanksgiving! Perfectly cooked, cheesy and flavorful! I also tasted my friends yams, and collard greens, and they were NEXT LEVEL! Those were the best greens I've had in my life! The cornbread was also amazing! The woman who took our order was thee absolute kindest! I believe her name was Na, or something like it. She understood hospitality, and my friends and I all greatly appreciated her! All of the staff were just so helpful and friendly, and I couldn't have asked for a better experience! I can't wait to get back!

Stopped in here last month while I was in Newark for the day. As someone who spends regular time in Manhattan, I wasn't expecting to be wowed but the food was AMAZING! Ordered the catfish with Mac and cheese and collard greens with a piece of cornbread. Some of the best fried fish I've ever had. Both sides were delicious and if I wasn't so full, definitely would've gotten another piece of cornbread. Will definitely go out of my way to stop here again. 5/5

Came here for lunch one day with some friends and it was amazing as always. The service was fast and you could smell the food as soon as you entered the door! I got the chicken and waffles which was super filling and delicious. My friends got the turkey wings with cornbread and Mac n cheese while my other friend got the po'boy sandwich with Mac n cheese and yams. The food all around was amazing. They don't accept tips by card so make sure to bring cash

Pluses: Black owned restaurant serving cultural staples, plus foods for people who don't want Southern. Ambiance featured soul music, and at one point was playing Shaft! I can dig it. You're not left wanting for food quantity or quality. Plenty of shrimp in the grits, for example. Server was very pleasant to talk to with a little Southern twang to her voice. Why not five stars: Flavor needs deepening. For example, in the South I'm used to seeing okra chopped and breaded before being fried. Maybe more oily that way, more carbs... but more flavor as a result. I had the pulled chicken mac, which was a bit smaller of a dish overall (a bit intentional on my part) - and while the cheese flavors run deep, the meat did not. Shrimp and grits, I took a quick sample of my friend's grits and... I bet you can guess my finding there. Still, a very nice change from the usual Northern selection of foods. I would not hesitate to say Sweet T's is authentic and a nice visit if you're in town. You'll be paying a pretty penny wherever you eat, so you can tag this one on your list.

As we entered the restaurant, the floors were "crunchy", sticky and tacky. I assume they mopped the dining room with the same mop they use to clean the greasy floors in the kitchen. Had my husband taste it, and he immediately agreed that something was wrong with it. The plastic utensils were such a turn off. We're dining in, is it too much of a hassle to give your customers actual silverware?? Got fish and grits. Potatoes, toast and eggs. Honestly, the only flavorful item on my plate was the potatoes and eggs. Was upcharged to add cheese to my grits, but the cheese never melted. Pre shredded bagged cheese is what they have on hand it seems. My husband ordered shrimp and grits and asked for a side of eggs, but that arrived 15 minutes after we all received our food. Not sure why it took so long so cook up 2 eggs for him. He was also disappointed in his brunch. It was obvious they used frozen bagged shrimp. Probably the 26-30/lb because the shrimp were really small and had the nerve to be overcooked. Workers just seemed disheveled. Not sure what happened to Vondas but it fell off for sure. We're not from Newark and would travel here for years. Not anymore. This is the end of an era, definitely won't be back. Absolutely don't recommend.

My drink was missing, and when I called to resolve it, I was put on hold five separate times, waiting over 10 minutes each time. When I finally spoke to a host, she hung up on me mid-explanation. Subsequent calls went straight to an 'unavailable' recording. As a culinary student, I make it a point to support Black-owned businesses, but great food must be matched by great hospitality. Shortly after, another couple came in and were told about 20 minutes. We were the only two parties waiting. When a table opened, the waitress began seating us, and the chef stopped her and asked the other (AA) couple if they were there first. He then told the gentleman, "I see you with family, and I'm not trying to start any problems." This was said while we were literally being seated, and nothing was said to us. It put us in an awkward and embarrassing position, as we would never intentionally skip ahead of anyone. As a Hispanic couple, the interaction also left us wondering if we were being treated differently, even if that wasn't the intention. Then the drink order added to the frustration. I ordered a hibiscus lemonade and my boyfriend ordered a regular lemonade. The waitress repeated it back incorrectly as strawberry, and I corrected her. About 10 minutes later she brought a strawberry lemonade anyway. When I said that wasn't what I ordered, the chef took the drink and handed it to the other couple who had just ordered a strawberry lemonade , saying it was freshly made and "they didn't want it." That was uncomfortable because I never ordered strawberry to begin with. Overall, the interaction felt dismissive and awkward. Mistakes happen, but the way this was handled -- especially the comments made -- left us feeling unwelcome. I hope this feedback helps improve communication and customer experience moving forward.
