After landing in New Jersey, I was starving and craving a good, filling meal. I came across Cornbread and decided to Uber over for a quick bite, and I'm so glad I did! As a first-time visitor, I had a great experience. The restaurant was clean, had a warm, welcoming atmosphere, and the service was excellent. The staff was especially friendly and even let us sample a few of the sides before ordering, which I really appreciated. I ordered the fried fish with collard greens, plus a side of rice and gravy. Everything was flavorful and satisfying. The only reason I'm giving four stars instead of five is because I don't think the fish was actually catfish, which is what I was expecting. With that being said, it was still delicious. And I have to mention the cornbread...it was absolutely amazing! Absolutely not!!! I order from here today and let me just say they have lost my business in this location. I never go here but this was the closes one to me. They have absolutely no consistency I should be able to come this location and go to the one in maplewood and get the same quality. Ordered the catfish with Mac& cheese and yams. When you think of soul food you think of southern hospitality. At least that is what I tend to think. But we are on the east coast and not the south. I did look at some other reviews and I can agree with a few of them that the service could be better. Some staff members were more friendly than others but a few seemed to have a bit of an attitude. As for the food, it was just okay. I did enjoy their cornbread and yams. The rice and gravy was okay and the fried whitening was okay. I didn't enjoy the fried whitening as much because it isn't deboned so you have to watch out for tiny bones while trying to enjoy the fish. I also ordered the peach cobbler and sweet tea which were good. Cornbread Newark pricing is also pretty fair. It isn't as expensive as other soul food restaurants. read more

As much as I have passed by this location in the past, I finally stepped in to try the food and was pleasantly surprised. We stopped by on a Saturday evening in late June and was greeted by the very lovely and extremely funny NaNa, whom was truly welcoming and helpful when it came to our menu selections. After some discussion with all the ladies, Nana, Kawana and Bernice, whom all offered valuable insight and on-point suggestions. We decided on a Fried Catfish plate with a side of yams and collard greens and a Baked Chicken plate with a side of yams and Mac & cheese. After great debate we elected to wash it all down with the "Manager's Special". The food was very tasty and well seasoned. The cornbread (the restaurant's namesake) was delectable. The protein (main) portions are great, however the side portions are minuscule in comparison. We both had mains to take home but our sides were finished quickly. In addition I wish that the temperature of the food was much hotter. Many of the sides are prepared and resting in a heated serving display however, the temperature wasn't hot enough imo. The service was quick and easy. The restaurant is a grab and go type of vibe, but has a vast section for seating. I got catfish meal with a side of mac and cheese and yams. Each meal automatically comes with a slice of cornbread. The whiting was good but could've used hint of more seasoning. The Mac and cheese were tasty as well. So interesting that on Google Maps Cornbread that thousands of review but on Yelp it is not that big. Came here before a concert and the food was pretty good. I really didn't expect this to be a fast casual but was not mad about it at all. I ordered Catfish with Sweet Potato and I didn't expect them to give me two full pieces of catfish. The catfish was delicious as the outside was extremely crispy while the inside was very tender. I also thought it went well with the sweet potato as it had a bit of carmelization to it. This might be the more authentic way to make catfish but I wish there was a bit more spices to it as it was a bit bland for my taste. The worst part of my experience was the wait, but when I say well worth it....The food was 10 out of 10. Catfish was rocking cooked perfectly, the yams reminded me of home, the collards bangin, and the oxtails amazing. I have been wanting to try this place for a while now and I finally got to try it today. I ordered the three piece chicken w/ two sides, an uptown, and potato salad Chicken: 10/10. Juicy. Flavorful. Well cooked. I'm lucky I took a picture when I did, it didnt stand a chance once I tried it. Mac&cheese: 10/10. As much as I loved it, it may not be for everybody. I dont like an ooey gooey overly cheesy mac. This was perfect. Not overly cheesed but well cooked and flavorful. I'm glad I got it honestly because I almost didnt. Uptown: 8/10 paired well with the food. I dont know if I would drink it on its own. Candied Yams: 7/10 too many spices for my liking but I still ate all of it. Cornbread: I'm not going to rate this one but what I will say is it's not dry. Just wasnt my favorite thing to eat. Potato Salad: I wanted to like it soo bad but I wouldn't order this again. Today I decided to take my mom out for lunch at cornbread (10/16/25) because she always wanted to go. The food and service was good until I bit into a rib that had hair in it. It was a long straight hair. I knew wasn't mine because I have locs and the party I was with had brown hair with blond highlights . When I went to tell the staff I showed them the hair that was in the food but they didn't seem to care. One of the ladies just told me to place the tray in the area on top of the garbage bin and that was it. No one at the restaurant apologized or showed any concern. I wasn't even offered a refund or another plate of food. The workers just ignored me and kept working like nothing happened. I went to the bathroom and returned to my table hoping to be acknowledged or approached about how to rectify the incident. Eventually, my mom got up asked what they were going to do about the incident. The staff member rudely snapped back at her and asked my mom "what did she want, did she want more food?" I then responded no. She snapped again and decided she would refund it. The whole encounter was rude and unprofessional. She treated me like I was in the wrong. I was completely calm and respectful but the staff were rude, dismissive and showed no signs of accountability. They really tried to act like the incident wasn't a big deal and I also don't understand why they couldn't even offer me a simple apology. The whole situation was bizarre. read more

Stopped in here last month while I was in Newark for the day. As someone who spends regular time in Manhattan, I wasn't expecting to be wowed but the food was AMAZING! Cornbread in Newark is an absolute gem and hands-down the single best soul food restaurant I've experienced in at least the last ten years. I am NOT exaggerating! If you check my reviews you'll see I'm from Ohio and have been looking everywhere for traditional and authentic soul food back home but unless I personally take hours to cook it, its nowhere to be found! Unfortunately it took me traveling all the way to New Jersey to finally find a venue with great southern soul food that reminded me of my childhood and hit the spot. All of the chicken pieces were small and needed more seasoning, not salt, but seasoning. The mac and cheese, although cheesy, was greasy and tasted mediocre, at best. The person who ordered the catfish had no comment whatsoever, again mediocre. What a disappointing lunch. Tipping is optional and there is a can on the counter when you pay. They serve the protein in a box with a piece of cornbread, and the sides are in tiny containers--so small, they look like they're meant for toddlers. The portion sizes for the sides don't match the price at all; you could probably hold them in the palm of your hand. They should consider upgrading their portion sizes or using larger containers to create a more complete meal instead of individual small ones. If they combined the small containers into one larger container, you'd really notice the difference. I've never dined in, so I'm not sure what the portion sizes are like if you eat there.
