On the hunt for food as soon as we landed in Newark, and all signs (via Yelp) pointed to Uncle Willie's Wings! And we were not disappointed!! Uncle Willie's is your classic hole-in-the-wall feel-good eateries. Don't plan on dining in because there's only one table, so takeout is the way to go. We did have to wait a while for our order, but that gave us a chance to chat with Uncle Willie himself. Plus we all know that good food takes time. The garlic parm actually had a bit of sweetness to it, which caught me off guard, but didn't mind. We could have done without the fries, but it may have been because it was to-go. We had a craving for wings and decided to check out this place with decent ratings. It's a no-frills kind of spot in Newark. The woman manning the register was friendly and gave us some flavor recommendations. We decided to get 12 wings and the two sauces - garlic parm and bitter ex. It came with a side of waffle fries. We waited awhile for the wings, maybe 20 mins? I thought the wings were fine. Don't expect anything particularly crispy. The meat in the flats was more moist than the drummettes. I think their strong suit is the sauces. They were delicious but I expected a little more from the wings. Not that they were the most important part but the fries were not crispy either, little soggy. Not sure if I would return but I recommend trying the bitter ex sauce. Definitely has a kick! read more

We actually didn't realize we walking in right before closing so what was left on the menu was limited but the man working was welcoming and prepared what he could for us. Willie was great, black owned spot, originally from Chicago so the style and flavor made immediate sense. He danced to classic rap records while he made my food. As a person that does this at home, I felt like it made my food taste better and I could tell he has a real passion for his business. Food: I had 8 wings. 4 Asian Chi & 4 Garlic Parm. Both were amazing choices. Came with a side, I chose fries w/some of the Willies sauce on it. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!! I also had a It Was All A Dream smoothie which was BOMB AF. I was craving wings all day at work and decided to Yelp the best wings in Newark! I always try to support Black owned local businesses! Anyway, we walked in looking bewildered and confused and the owner immediately asked us if it was our first time there. He made us feel totally comfortable. You can sample different sauces before you purchase your meal. While we waited, we enjoyed a great conversation with him about how he started his business, how he gave back to the community and the future leaders of this country. They cook your wings while you are there so expect to wait around 20-25 minutes. It's probably better to call in orders (if you can). Now on top the food: This is a solid 4.5 star establishment. Wings: I got 12 wings (jerk and Asian chi) and a side order of sweet potato fries. The wings were plump and juicy. The sauces were definitely the highlight of the wings. The jerk sauce wasn't overly spicy but it was flavorful and the Asian wings had a touch of heat in them. The downfall for me where the sweet potato fries. When I got home they were soggy but I put them in the air fryer to reheat which crisped them up. However, they just didn't have any flavor. I added seasoning to them but it still didn't improve. My GF ordered jerk wings as well and a side of rice and beans. She absolutely loves rice and thought the rice was very good. She also enjoyed her wings even though she's not much of a wings eater. She also ordered the iced tea lemonade which she felt was very good. She asked the owner about desserts because she felt that would have been a great addition to the meal and he said it's coming! You can tell the owner put a lot of love into the wings, had a chance to meet him and he gave me the rundown of all the specialty sauces. I would recommend the lemon pepper wings because they are better than you would expect. Instead of a dry lemon rub, the owner uses a wet lemon soak and they are super flavorful.
