I heard about this tea shop at City Place and decided to go because it's kinda near work. An associate told me that honey passionfruit green tea was his ultimate favorite drink there, so I took his advice and ordered it. I also added a mixture of jellies in with the drink as well. The drink was lovely and refreshing. The honey mixed into the tea was not overly sweet - just enough for me to enjoy the taste. They also have the Boba Boy bottle that is reusable. You can put your drinks in there. The next time when you visit, bring the bottle with you and get a discount. A win-win for everyone. The staff was friendly and approachable. Came during a promotion where they were offering a free regular-sized bubble tea of your choice. It's a nice place. Clean, spacious, decorated. Service is good; they take the time to explain questions slowly and clearly which is something that might be a bit of a different experience depending on where you usually get your bubbletea and proficiency in language... Their drinks come in three sizes: regular, large, and "bottle". If you decide to go for the bottle, the next time you order a drink, you can re-use the bottle and they'll give you a $1 off your drink, which is pretty nice as it is an effective way to reduce waste by offering an incentive to do so. They don't use an order number system, and instead opt to call the order out. This means that if you don't take a receipt, you'll have to remember what you ordered, and if multiple people order the same thing, there's a chance that someone that ordered later might get it first because you weren't paying attention or weren't available when it was called. During the order itself, topping options were offered, but no mention of sugar or ice customization. I will assume it was a simple oversight, which is easy to fix, though it seems none of the others ahead of me were offered sugar and ice customization either. Though asking about it afterwards, the option is there, so you might need to take some initiative if they don't offer it directly. I ordered the regular milk tea with their original tapioca. Normally, the tapioca is included in the price of the drink, but it seems like during the promo period, they decided to treat it as an add-on. I mean, I guess you're getting a free drink so sixty cents for some tapioca is justified. But at the same time, is it really worth breaking the news that you don't get the full experience from that specially prepared tapioca pairing because it's a promo drink? The lack of ice/sugar customization became a problem in the end. I tasted subtle hints of tea, but there wasn't any milk flavor. The drink also tasted really watered down, and then I realized half the cup was full of ice. Again, maybe it's the promo drink, so you're getting as much water as possible. The tapioca had a slight taste of something sweet...but it was too subtle and combined with all the ice it was kind of flavorless as well. While there aren't any bubble tea places around city place, there are a dozen of them just a few blocks north in chinatown with better drinks. People working there are pretty nice, but unfortunately when it comes to bubble tea, I value the drink more than the service. read more

I recently visited the downtown location of the BobaBoy and had the chance to try a variety of their signature drinks, including their taro slush and deluxe milk tea. Located near the Rogers Centre and at the base of a condo tower, it's not necessary the most visible place in terms of foot traffic or TTC-accessibility, but is relatively close to a number of tourist attractions. Boba Boy offers variety of colourful and creative bubble teas and slushes, as well as poke bowls (or includes a Poke Girl inside the shop). They pride themselves of offering fresh, handcrafted tapioca, made in-house, and also note that if the tapioca is not used within 4 hours it has to be thrown away. They also offer a variety of tapioca flavours, including original, matcha and taro tapioca, as well as other unique and experimental varieties (like brown sugar). Taro Slush: The taro slush was decent, and had a really intense taro flavour, was very creamy and not too sweet. The purple colour was also very pretty. In terms of getting my taro slush in their bottles, I was surprised to find that all the powder was just sitting at the top of my drink! So, be sure to shake well before drinking. Deluxe Milk Tea: The deluxe milk tea had a strong tea flavour, though was a little watery for my liking as I prefer a more creamy and milky consistency. The reusable plastic bottles are quite cute and novel, but I do not know how many times it can be washed and reused as the plastic is relatively thin. They just made it without ice. Asked for half sweet but both were still super sweet. The poke bowls were terrible. Way too much sauce. The avocado was hard, not even ripe yet. The seafood toppings were frozen when ordered, they didn't even defrost before cooking. The unagi was just microwaved to heat it up. The mango was super sour. I ordered a hot matcha tapioca milk tea from Boba Boy. They didn't have anymore matcha tapioca, which I was looking forward to trying, but didn't tell me until I got there that they made it with regular tapioca. I wish they told me at the point of ordering. The tea itself wasn't matcha flavoured, so I ended up with just a plain original tapioca milk tea. I chose 0% sugar, and usually other places, the tapioca is sweetened, but this is truly less sugar. I like being able to choose sweetness level. I do like that the milk tastes real and not powdered. The location is convenient, but the tea itself, I don't find it any different and it's quite expensive compared to other original milk tapioca teas. We came here on a late Friday night. The place is quite spacious for a bubble tea shop and was very empty. The store was well lit and clean. To be honest, the bubble tea wasn't anything special. I thought it was quite expensive for what you were getting, the sizes seem smaller than other bubble tea shops in the area. It's nice that you can customize to your liking, with sweetness and ice, but to me, that's standard for a bubble tea shop nowadays. I enjoyed the winter melon flavour as it was subtle and mixed well with the milk tea. My 0% sugar drink was very bland, I should have gotten 25% sweet but most places that I get 0% is still quite sweet. I'm happy that they truly kept it 0% to retain the tea flavours. If you want their signature bottles, you have to pay an extra $1. The bottle is reusable and the next time you bring it in, you can get a discount on your drink by upgrading the size (e.g. pay a medium and get the large in a bottle). The bottle is actually quite hard to use, as the straw barely sticks out at the top - it's just long enough to fit but not long enough to pull out of the bottle properly. Their menu is quite extensive so it's cool to try all the different drinks and options. It feels a little gimicky with getting the bottle so you drink looks cool but I also see the good in that - they're supporting reusable bottles and saving on plastic so thumbs up to them for that! read more

I order winter melon tea with lemon with no sugar, no ice, wherever I go. Most places, even the high-end, popular bubble tea places, still make them too sweet for my liking. However, not at Boba Boy - I like the winter melon tea with lemon here - not too sweet, not too sour, just the way I want it. I am also a huge supporter of smaller businesses. I am not against the big bubble tea shop names, but whenever I can, I prefer to support a smaller business or even a genuinely kind person who makes an honest living in the direct selling business. Came here for the free drink promo, and honestly I'm glad I didn't pay much for anything. They made you pay extra for the tapioca which is 68 cents. I got the Taro Milk Tea with Taro tapioca and my girlfriend got the Original Milk Tea with sesame tapioca. We both agree that it didn't taste like anything and the tapioca is giving the drink the most flavour which is saying something. Basically.. tapioca with water lol So I understand why the promo has to happen, because lots of people don't really enjoy the taste so it has to end up being free. This was our first time at Boba Boy and like the yelp barometer suggests when you select 3/5 stars, it was A-Ok. The location is convenient for us. It is located at the base of a condo building on Spadina and Bremner and not a far walk for us. Considering that we are avid bubbletea-ers, this is the closest option for us without much competition nearby (there's a DQ, a burrito shop, and an asian fusion fast food restaurant next door). They also offer poke bowls inside, right next to the bbt. The price is similar to that of other higher end bubble tea shops. It's not cheap. It came to about $6-7 for each regular sized drink. We ordered the Matcha smoothie with tapioca and the Coconut Milk tea with jelly. You get to choose your sugar/ ice levels, which is pretty standard for most high end bbt shops now. I was pleasantly surprised with the tapioca - rich in flavour and fresh tasting (it was chewy and not that hard stale tapioca you get at some bbt places). But, the flavour of the drink itself was subtle. It needed more matcha. The Coconut Milk tea was decent, but once again, lacking the extra flavour. Boba Boy is a small branch of the bigger and more popular 168 Tea Shop. If you grew up drinking and still enjoy 168 Tea Shop, you will enjoy Boba Boy. Classic bubble tea with differing variations. I thought it was interesting the different types of bottles that they offer. I especially like the ones that were resealable. I also like that there were a variety of non-milk options. I particularly like the fruit juice drinks, although they were still a bit too sweet for me even when I asked for 0% sugar added. The shop is still quite new, so it's very clean. Decor is cute (very Instagrammable), decent amount of seating and tables, and fairly spacious. The staff are very friendly and willing to answer questions and explain things on the menu. Downside is that there's only one person taking orders at the cash, so the line moves pretty slowly. I ordered a matcha milk tea, which was incredibly disappointing. It tasted as if they simply added matcha powder to cold water, making the drink very bitter and missing the rich matcha flavour. It was also not creamy at all, which one would expect from a milk tea. I do appreciate that it was not overly sweet as most other bubble tea places. Before coming to this city, a lot of people didn't recommend getting boba in downtown, but I wanted to be the one to judge that. And booooy, were they right... I first went into Boba Boy with the intention of just checking out the place. From the makers of Tea Shop 168 (imo the OG bbt place but has unfortunately been unable to keep up with the intense bbt competition in the Downtown Core). The tea is okay, not very strong in comparison to other places. But here, it's the tapioca that you're here for. Homemade and flavoured tapioca is becoming a trend and this shop is Tea Shop 168's answer to that. I've only had fresh tapioca made from one other location in Toronto, so that's all I have to compare this place to. The tapioca is nice, only tried the matcha and sesame one this time around. The matcha one is soft and has a light matcha flavour to it. As someone who really enjoys intense matcha flavour, I did not appreciate this flavour as much. However, if you like a lighter tasting matcha, this would work for you. The sesame one was really good as it had actual sesame seeds in it too. The best way to describe it, in my opinion, would be as if you were eating a sesame ball, but without the guilt of the oil and cholesterol of it. While the bubble tea may be mediocre here, the Poké bowls are a bit of a hidden gem. For $11.50, you can get a tuna and salmon bowl either rice or salad, as well as a bunch of fruit and veggies. Great value and a great way to eat healthy when you're crunched for time. read more

My friends and I went here today and out of 6 of us only 1 persons drink was made properly. My friends taro milk tea literally tasted like water mixed with powder. While my other friends milk tea tasted like water with syrup sweetener. The winter melon drink had no winter melon taste to it. I order the peach oolong with grass jelly. We waited for my drink for 30 minutes because they forgot the cup on another table and forgot about it. Mind you it was not even busy. They also added taro tapioca when I didn't even want that. The tea had no peach flavour and tasted of straight black tea. It had a horrible after taste and left my tongue feeling extremely dry. I didn't even finish the drink and was such a disappointing $6. Bought a cold honeydew milk tea with taro tapioca + taro smoothie because I heard it was good based on reviews here..Taro smoothie is good. Honeydew milk tea taste good. However, I am giving it one star based on the honeydew milk tea because 1) it taste like any other honeydew milk tea made from powder, nothing special; 2) it wasn't cold at all, I literally had to shake my drink for 5 minutes for the ice in it to make the drink somewhat cold; 3) the taro tapioca taste like NOTHING + some had weird, hard crunchy bits in it.
