There's a war happening in Old Town Monrovia. A boba war. Between Sharetea, Tpumps, and Cup of Cha all within a one-block radius of each other, it can be difficult to stand out amongst the many boba options available. Perhaps wisely, Boba Box is camped out on the north side of Myrtle Ave, just across from the Vons shopping plaza, away from all the competition. We found Boba Box through Yelp's #LocalAdventureChallenge, where we stopped by for a free drink, but we've been back to buy our own drinks, too. As the name suggests, the drinks come in these tall, boxy, rectangular bottles. The shape isn't very ergonomic (they slide around in my cup holder), so the theme is a bit of a gimmick, but it helps create a memorable product and a unique experience. We've had a few drinks: the wintermelon tea, the honey yuzu green tea, the Oreo matcha latte, and a classic brown sugar black milk tea. Of these, the wintermelon tea and the honey yuzu green tea were my favorites. There is a delectable sweetness to these drinks--not too much, but just enough--and the flavors of each ingredient really come through. The space inside the shop is bigger than one might think. There is a wide enough waiting area for social distancing. Street parking isn't much of a hassle since it's further away from the crowded businesses to the south. If nothing else, you can park in the aforementioned Vons plaza and use the crosswalk. To me, Boba Box has become the frontrunner of all the boba places I could possibly visit in Old Town Monrovia. I asked a friend of mine if she was down to accompany me to this new boba shop that's approximately 36 miles up north from us. Of course she accepted the offer and we went in with high expectations. Once we arrived in the area, you'll see that Boba Box is located on the corner of some streets, so no adjacent parking lots here. There were plenty of street parking down the way and a little strip of restaurants and stores directly across. When I try a new boba place, I like to get multiple drinks so I can write a fair review, so here's what I ordered for myself: **Strawberry Matcha Latte (Reg Sugar, Reg Ice, Boba): Since this is their #1 drink, I had to get it. Who doesn't love strawberry and/or matcha? Definitely not me! For this drink, make sure you shake it up really well because the strawberry portion on the bottom has a really thick consistency, much like jam, so make sure you mix it up well. The drink was really good and reached my expectations, however, the boba was heavily coated in honey, which made it really sweet as well. The sweetness of the honey and the strawberry jam like consistency overpowered the rest of the drink. Luckily, the base of the drink wasn't too sweet. Besides that little hiccup, great overall taste. I had requested less ice for this one since I was taking it back home to drink later in the evening. The bits of the watermelon were floating up top so make sure you mix it nice and well and request for either less ice or no ice to ensure it doesn't water down the flavor too much. The green tea that came with it was absolutely delicious. The tea wasn't too sweet or bitter and definitely had a fresh flavor. (4/5) **Honey Yuzu Green Tea (Reg Sugar, No Ice, Chia Seeds): There isn't much I have to say about this one. The green tea was spot on and you can't go wrong with honey yuzu flavor. To words, well sort of one word twice...say it with me..YUZU YUZU! This drink is soooo refreshing and yuzu is my favorite flavor ever, which is in the Japanese citrus family. Yuzu yuzu has honey, yuzu green tea, and yuzu bits. My recommendation is to add aloe vera or crystal boba and 50-75% sweetness. The watermelon green tea used real watermelon blended with the tea! It was so refreshing. I got 50% sugar and I thought it was great, not too sweet! Would definitely recommend this boba shop if you're in the area. I also feel like they use really quality tea! Another solid boba spot in the 626! But this one is different from your typical boba shops. I like the concept of this place with their boxed cups and the lid is pretty cool as well. Not sure if they have their own parking lot, but I've been parking on the street and haven't had a problem finding parking at all. They have an aesthetic back drop with the green grass and LED light, so there goes all the IG posts. I've been ordering their wintermelon milk tea with boba which I think is the drink to decide if a boba shop is good or not...and yes, this place passes. This new boba shop just opened up, and it did not disappoint! Here is my thorough and honest review on my first visit. (Disclaimer: the owner is a friend from high school, but I do not receive any rewards or services for this review. Everything I say is 100% honest.) Atmosphere/Location: It's right on the corner of the block, allowing for ample natural lighting. There is lots of space, which will allow for group hangouts and study spaces in the future. The cute little kiosk in the middle to take your order is a vibe. There is free street parking in front of the store and around the block, but I didn't see any nearby public parking lots. There are social distancing markers on the floor, and the tables are spread out. I think it could use a bit more decorations to spruce it up and make it feel more lived in, but it's super new (and limited by CDC/FDA guidelines) so I'm sure it will get there eventually. Service: Good service, the cashier (Henry) was nice. He confirmed the order before charging and again when my order came out. He gave me a to-go carrier for my large order without me asking. Drinks: All 50% sweetness Wintermelon Green Milk Tea Brown Sugar Milk Box + Boba Brown Sugar Milk Box + Cheese foam + Boba + Pudding Brown Sugar Oolong Milk Tea + Boba My sister who is a sweet tooth would have preferred if it was 100% sweetness, but unfortunately I didn't know and just ordered all 50%. I think 50% was the sweet spot for most people, but sweet tooths might like it sweeter. According to those that tried my drink (milk box + cheese foam), mine was the sweetest one and very rich. It was still quite sweet for me (I'm not much of a sweet tooth) and will take it down half a notch next time, but I liked the cheese foam. I was very happy with mine. There was a comment that the wintermelon was a bit overpowered by the tea, but still good. The boba itself was delicious, sweet and perfectly chewy. Pudding was perfect too. Packaging: I feel I have to talk about this because it's very unique and it's even in the name. It comes in a super cute plastic PET container (I believe it is recyclable) with logo and lid with a hole in the middle for the straw. There is a lid liner inside the lid for you to mix and shake before removing. The design is lowkey kinda genius. I can definitely keep reusing the bottle for other drinks after cleaning it, or maybe potting a plant . Price: Currently, drinks mostly range from $5.00-5.50, with 50c add-ons. These boxes are large, exactly 24 oz full capacity, with more of a 22-oz fill capacity. Compared to so many other boba shops that are half the size, more expensive, and not as memorable, I'd say this was actually a really good deal and a quality purchase. I gotta say... Boba Box was actually one of the better boba places that I've been able to try during this pandemic. There are some boba stores that are purely aesthetic and the tea and boba is trash. They managed to do both which nowadays seems hard to accomplish. The interior is simplistic yet photogenic, the cups are fun and unique, and the drinks were actually good! As always, I continually am on the hunt to try new restaurants and boba places. If someone asked me what my favorite hobby was that would probably be it. It's fun to make new discoveries especially during a time like this when all seems so grim. Places that turn out to be good is a shining light at the end of the tunnel. As a general consumer, I am not one that cares too much for fancy cups. To me, it's mostly about the drink quality. That's the thing that I am ingesting and ultimately paying for. If the cup is fun and has a nice design that is just the icing on top. At Boba Box they serve up their teas in a tall and skinny plastic box with a lid that has a hole for the straw. I don't think that they are the first ones to have this box design, but they executed it well. Even the straws were thought out. I noticed the straws were in some thick plastic which kind of gave it a more premium feel. Definitely a waste of plastic but you can't save the turtles here. The boba straws seem to be designed specifically for these box cups. They're longer than normal straws so your metal boba straw won't fit and will sink into your drink if you try. Enough about the cups... let's talk about the drinks. They have a pretty decent selection of menu selections and different ways to create your own drink. The employee pointed out the screen that showed their Top 10 drinks since it was my first time. Ultimately, I decided to go with my own choice of a Brown Sugar Oolong Milk Tea and a Green Tea with Cheese Foam. I was afraid that the Brown Sugar Oolong would be too sweet because most places that have a brown sugar flavored drink tend to over sweeten it. I got it with 75% sugar which was a perfect amount if I wasn't feeling something too sweet. On a normal day, I feel like the regular sweetness would have been good as well. For both drinks, I loved that I was still able to taste the tea. A lot of places sell watered down milk teas where you only taste the milk with just a slight hint of tea. I appreciate that the tea was present in both of the drinks I ordered. The green tea was strong and paired well with the cheese foam after shaking it up. It was a refreshing tea and had a light sweet/salty vibe from the cheese foam. I found it perfectly sweetened at the normal sweetness level. The boba's texture here was good as it was in line with my preference. Boba Box's boba was on the softer side with a little bit of chew. If you prefer a more firm and QQ boba texture you might not like the boba from here. One thing I would have to knock them on would be the flavoring and sweetness. At first I thought that maybe it was a fresh batch of boba so the pearls didn't have time to soak in the syrup, but I came about an hour before their closing time so I doubt they would be making new boba that late. Definitely think they can work on the flavor and ensuring that it absorbs the syrup properly. The oolong milk tea would have been perfect if the boba had the extra sweetness that the overall drink needed. The service was pretty nice. The employee was engaging and pointed out their list of popular drinks. One thing I found disappointing was when two customers came in without a mask. Their sign said they needed a mask to enter but they didn't come in with one. The customer only put one on when going to the register, but the person with her stood there with no mask holding a dog. Luckily their store is pretty big so there's room to get away from those that aren't considerate. As I first pointed out, the store is definitely modern and simplistic with a plant wall being their main photo op and attraction. When simple is done right it's very satisfying. The store is located on the corner of an intersection so I'm not sure if there's a parking lot but there was street parking along the side. With all of the things going on in the world it's great to find something enjoyable even if it's for a little bit. I'm happy to have found Boba Box and would recommend others to try it. If they are able to open up during a pandemic and create a great product, I think they are worth your time and money. read more

COVID-19: Social distancing is enforced at this establishment. All of the staff wears a mask. All customers are expected to wear a mask too. The staff also wear gloves. There are some hand sanitizers available for customers to use. This place is available for take outs and has no outdoor seating available. They are also sanitizing in between customers. While I was grabbing my drinks from this establishment several days ago, I asked if they had any special offers and they weren't offering any at the moment. They currently don't have happy hour. They also do not allow pets in their establishment. Parking: I did not see any parking lots. I just parked on the street, which was fairly easy to do because of COVID. Life is definitely like a Box of chocolates and one never really know what you'll get until you try it. So with that said this spot has good drinks don't get me wrong but, there's that ugly but. Walking inside the shop I felt like something was missing, like maybe the other half of the shop that wasn't decked out all cute like one side was and it felt really really empty. Does that really matter? Well if you want to hang it does. The service was, and I'm going to be nice, it's like seeing someone who really doesn't want to be there and they have to so they can pay bills or their tuition. And that's that. Not once but twice, maybe it was the wrong times to come on both occasions. Green tea to die for! Green tea here is not too bitter, just the right amount. They have a yuzu one too if you like citrus. The popular strawberry matcha latte here is also very balanced and delicious. Drinks come with cute bottles (my gf loves them) and the location here is top notch! A great new location opened up for another boba shop. It has fresh ingredients and uses a non dairy creamer to make their milk teas. It comes in a plastic box shape that can be reused. I'm not sure if they take back the bottles right now due to the coronavirus, but hopefully one day, we can reduce our carbon footprint one drink at a time. It has a lot of space in their shop. I can see it as a good hangout place in the future or for studying on a weeknight. It has a lot of windows so it won't be a gloomy study night. They now also offer waffles at their shop.
