Boat Drinks is a gem of the lakefront, in Burnham Harbor. In such a small footprint, you can enjoy the solitude of a water's-edge table, the "in-the-mix" action of the bar area, or big-vibe, with the various live music performers, in the "stage" area, all-at-once, according to what you're up-for that day/evening.
If you are taking-in a concert or sporting event at Soldier Field, but don't want to "tailgate" in the South Lot, this is the place to do all that, without the cleanup.
Food-wise, I always go for the Mahi-Mahi sandwich (with cheese, please), and an Italian Beef quesadilla, for the table. Friends have had great luck with the polish san, and the Hummus appetizer.
Last time, I wanted the burger, but could not get-past the FOMO on the Mahi. Next time, definitely (maybe).
We opted for some BBQ, for the table, last time, and the line was much shorter (as the BBQ is in the "stage" area, so first-timers don't seem to know about it). Canned beer and soft drinks only, I think. Aces for the falling-off-the-bone ribs (trying more next time).
Drink-wise, if I'm driving, I go for the Arnold Palmer, or an Iced coffee (black; they don't have the actual heavy cream I require).
In "tailgate" mode, I have also asked the bartender for her recco, and loved the Mai Tai that was served-up. Also their "Chicago Light" beer, which has an interesting story behind it (if it's not too busy, ask for the backstory) has been on our table more than once.
All served in a "souvenir cup," to commemorate the experience.
Service can be slow for ordering, at the bar (no table ordering...though they will run it out to you); they get MAJOR lines (like any great place does), but in all the times we have been there, the food was consistently on-point, no matter how busy it was = worth the wait.
SO... if you are going to Soldier Field, or running, biking, walking the Lakefront Path ( which cuts-right-through the place), or live in the South Loop and want a uniquely-memorable experience, do your crew a favor and check it out.
PRO TIP: If you are working remote during the week, and want some lakefront time, bring your laptop , a backpack, and your bike. Sit waterside for work, and watch the Burnham boats go-out...Then mount-up, and head north or south to either Diversey or MSI, respectively. Don't have a bike? There are TWO Divvy stations nearby. read more
