The Space/Concept: Great concept, but it can be hard to find a lot of table top space to actually play board games. Most tables are great for 2 people on a cute date, but 4 or more and you will be one of the groups lingering around. However, it does seem like you can reserve tables if you want to make an event out of things. All of the games are $2 to rent and they have a very large collection. The popular games do get snatched up quick! The Service/Drinks: The beers are all around $8 but during happy hour, some selections are only $4. Its nice to have beers with the social experience. The service is great, the person at the front is very informative. They genuinely just want everyone to have a good time. Good spread of mainstream board games, a few decent beers on tap (bartenders mix sweet), handful of tellies for sports viewing, and BYO food. There's always two main reactions to that last feature, and I happen to fall into the category of "dammit I'm lazy and I want my food the same place I get my beer." By the time I prep some semblance of a picnic, I may as well save money by sponsoring better booze with a board game session at someone's house where the pieces are all intact and we can change games with minimal hassle. And any place nearby with tasty noms may as well profit from my drinking problem. Not the best date night option given the crowds regularly flocking to both levels. Naturally, tables are prime real estate that go fast. Depending on what staff member you talk to, you'll get one of three variants on their game rental rules. More evidence that the fees are being applied to game maintenance would be nice; Mousetrap was tapped out by other patrons, so we sifted through some choices before determining that Battleship was one of the few games sufficiently intact to play. read more

Fun space with great specials on drinks. The mulled cider was exceptional. The Manhattan however was a disaster served in a rocks glass filled with ice. When I stated that the drink was prepared wrong, the other bartender drained the first serving into the correct glass; tasted like whisky flavored water. Not great for $13. Cheap games and garden variety beer! Love suggesting this spot for friendly gatherings. It's a bit of a walk from the DuPont metro station uphill, but TOTALLY WORTH IT! My friend reserved some space for her birthday party here... or so she thought. When she arrived, they couldn't find her reservation even though one of the managers had confirmed with her over email. They had already double-booked the space that was meant for her, but they didn't try to make it up in any way. Luckily, she managed to swipe a couple of tables by the stairs on the 2nd floor. By the end of the night, at least 20 people showed up to wish her a happy birthday but half the group didn't stay long. I think that if we had gotten the larger space she was originally promised, it would have been more comfortable and people would have stayed longer which means the bar would have made more money. When my fiancé went to close out his tab, the bartender kept stopping to talk to a girl (possibly an employee) so everything took much longer than necessary. This was my second time at Board Room. Although I'm a huge fan of board games, I'm not a fan of this place. It gets packed and too long. Did I mention that the management seems poor? read more

I'm fully prepared to be the first person in the history of Yelp to give the Board Room DC two stars. It's not that great, there I said it. I wanted to like this place--no scratch that. I wanted to fall in love with this place, have a torrid one night fling only to realize we couldn't live without each other, and make it a regular hook-up until one of us realized sh*t was getting too real and then break-up via text only to later drunkenly tweet my undying love for them thus making us a couple again. Yes, THAT'S how bad I wanted to be in favor of the Board Room---but in all honesty it should've been named the BORED Room. This place could've been SO much more than it actually was. I went on a Saturday evening with a group of friends. I only trekked into DC because the bartender told me via pre-driving phone call that "We're really slow right now" when in fact they were incredibly packed. So skip the fact that it took me 45 minutes to find parking (which I never did, I just used a $20 parking lot!), and lugged a bag of our own games from a 15 minute walk away. Once inside no one ever checked IDs at the door (can we say liquor law violation?), and we found literally the ONE table that was left. It was a crappy piece of real estate located on the top floor right up against the guard rail but we were desperate. I was stuck in my chair for most evening due to people being crammed up behind me. And getting to the unisex (ewww!) bathroom was an adventure all on its own. We noticed many people taking tables that could've been used for "board games" but instead were drinking or using coats to "hold spots". In a place that has standing room only there needs to be some regulations on holding spots. I don't approve of it in the movie theater and the same goes for crowded bars. The noise level was impossible. Mostly because it was impossible to hear anything. We pantomimed most of the 2 hours that we were there or yelled in each others faces. The little table that we did have could hardly hold our drinks let alone the board games, and food we ordered off-site (yes this place serves NO food--not even some chips or french fries to get some food on all the booze you're drinking). There was no rhyme or reason to the madness at the Board Room. The elevator didn't work, there was no food, I couldn't hear my friends to talk--forget explaining rules to board games, and it was more crowded than a Justin Bieber concert during middle school Spring Break. For the reviews I kept reading that whined about DC not serving alcohol after a certain time...STOCK UP! You're better off staying at home with friends, sitting around your table playing any board games you want, listening to whatever music you want, being able to actually HEAR them speak words to you. Board Room can keep their "board game" collection of Yatzee and Mousetrap---I'll be home playing Settlers, Monopoly, and Munchkin with the case of beer I bought beforehand. read more

There's nothing not to like. I love the atmosphere & the music is perfectly leveled so you can talk to people. I usually go to the Caged Bird bar next door but there music is super loud so when I need a break from that I come to the boardroom for about a hour when I need to have chilled convo but still with a bar environment. I have found this to be one of the most enjoyable board games bars I have ever been to. Even with the stacks and stacks of traditional board game bar games like Cards Against Humanity and Battleship, there are some cool diamonds in the rough. The bartenders are pretty friendly when it comes to the 1 dollar per game rule, especially if you touched a game and find it to be ridiculously boring or missing pieces. The vibe is great and the tables are huge so it is a perfect place to play any size of board game. It feels like this place is never all the way full, especially with their upstairs seating but I find this place to be super enjoyable on a Sunday afternoon. The beer list is a little small, but I never really come here for the beer in particular, but rather to have something to sip on while I play. The BYOF (bring your own food) is nice considering the plethora of food options in and around Dupont circle. My only gripe is that pieces for a lot of games are missing which really ruins it for the rest of us. Overall, I think this is my favorite board game bar in the country just because it doesn't just cater to the casual board gamer. read more

It's awesome to have a place to play games and drink. When you walk in, there is a heavy duty cabinet full of various games to take to your table to play. I've never seen so many copies of cards against humanity in one location, haha. There are two floors of tables, but the biggest size table is in the front by the front window. It's a great casual atmosphere for social drinkers to spend time with friends without having to shout to hear each other. They don't serve food, but you can bring food or have it delivered. The nearby food businesses are familiar with delivering food to the bar. Flippin Pizza will even give a 20% discount for people having pizza delivered to the bar. read more

1. Ambiance: This is a sports bar with board games for rent. Upon entering the bar, there is a huge display of board games on the right side of the restaurant. There is a TV screen at the bar for the customers to watch the Final Four games. 2. Food: I didn't get a chance to dine at this restaurant, and only ordered a beer. There is a large list of drafts that come in a glass or pitcher, cocktails, and wine. 3. Service: The bartender was nice and helpful. She provided the drinks quickly and did a great job assisting me. 4. Costs: The glass of beer was $6, which is appropriately priced around the DC area. Pitchers are priced around $20 or more. Also, it costs $2 to rent a game. 5. Overall Experience: I had a great time at the Board Room. I have never experienced a sports bar with board games and thought that the experience was unique and entertaining. We played the game called Sequence and it got really competitive. And now, at the prime age of 27, I'm currently kicking ass in a game built for ages 6 and older -- MOUSETRAP! I came to the Board Room after attending the D.C. Harry Potter Bar Crawl for approximately 30 minutes. What I thought would be a fun bar-hopping time with a group of like-minded nerds ended up being a hot mess of scantily clad millennial club-hoppers. My friends and I ended up at the Board Room around 5:30 and we were ecstatic that their Happy Hour was on- the drinks were a. large and b. incredibly cheap. We were able to spread out at a large, cozy table which would have been perfect if we'd wanted to do some gaming. We stayed for several hours and had a great time. The ambiance was perfect for us nerds- super relaxed and chill. I probably won't hang out in Dupont much, but if I ever find myself there and needing a spot to hang, this is a solid one. read more

I really liked Board Room when I was here for a happy hour yesterday. It's nice and intimate, which is a great environment for board games! Staff is really friendly, selection is vast, and you can get Flippin Pizza delivered TO YOUR TABLE. (The bar itself does not serve food.) You get a discount if you call it in from the bar, I believe. I don't really have much else to say! I just had a good time and will be more than happy to go back. :) Hopefully I'll be able to explore more of the bar's selection and games next time I come. read more

Let me start by saying I was motivated to search for a board/card game bar after visiting The Royal Palms Shuffleboard Club in Brooklyn, NY (shameless plug). First, this place is just a straight up bar with basic drinks, no food. But you are allowed to bring your own food so that may be a plus for some people. They charge you $2 for every game you want to play and their game selection was not good enough to be charging. It was a Monday so not as lively as a weekend perhaps. The bartender was not inviting or kind at all and customer service is a big deal for me. I felt like I could just host a game night at my apartment. Checked this place out for the first time last week. I was pretty excited because it seems to share a lot of the charm as the place where I used to work for a few years -- the Board and Brew. The main differences being that Board Room has a full liquor bar where BNB has a full restaurant kitchen and coffee/beer/wine bar. It isn't trying to be the same place, though. The BYOFood aspect was actually pretty nice, knowing everyone from your party could get food when they wanted, if they wanted, and beforehand to save time. The bartender was nice but mixed my drinks a little weak for my taste. Rum and comes just tasted like cokes and after 4 (happy hour prices were nice) I still wasn't really feeling much of a buzz. The main downside was the quality and selection of games. I guess I was spoiled by Board and Brew's well-managed collection of over 700 games, but the few that were there (of which there were a few copies each, to be fair) were in pretty terrible condition. It seems like they don't have any interest in maintaining quality, or even ensuring the games had all of the required pieces. If game quality stepped up (and I got lucky enough to have a slightly heavier handed bartender), then I'd shoot up to a 5 for Board Room. Nevertheless, a fun place to head with a group of pals for happy hour. Just don't expect a lot out of the game library. read more

Nothing better than spending a lazy, rainy Sunday evening during happy hour (noon to 7 p.m.) introducing a friend to all that is Cards Against Humanity. It was a chill atmosphere, which was perfect (I can only imagine what happens with drinks + competitive board gamers when we're there just to have some fun). There's no food here, but they do have menus for areas that deliver nearby. We called for Flippin' Pizza next door, and not only did they deliver for free to our table near the back, but we got a discount for ordering from the Board Room! The four of us split the Brooklyn, a salad and garlic knots and it was around $20. What a steal. I was pretty impressed with the number of games that they had, with your staples mixed in with ones I had never heard of. And they had Clue! I love Clue. My boyfriend and I decided to visit Board Room yesterday to spend a few hours before our dinner reservation in DuPont. The bar has such a cool concept - board games and drinks! :D. Pros: -Awesome game selection, even for just 2 players. We ended up going with Scattergories and had lots of fun :D. And the games are just $2 to "rent" / take to your table to play. -Decently priced drinks - I got a vodka cran and house wine and my bf got some beer. -Nice seating area - we found a rather large table and had lots of fun and felt really comfortable. They have an upstairs seating area too. -They're open during the day too. I believe they open around noon. Some of the cons: -They took forever to get our drinks and were more attentive to other patrons when my bf was trying to get us drinks. -They skimped on my glass of house wine. Def less than a usual glass you order at a typical bar. -The Board games can have lots of missing components. For instance, our Scattergories was missing extra writing implements, dice (we used a random letter generator on my bf's phone instead to improvise), and broken time keeper. You can improvise sometimes, but it still sucks that you're paying $2 for incomplete games. Overall, great concept and a fun time! We visited this unique bar on a Sunday around noon and were the only people there for a couple hours. What's so special about this bar you may ask... well first things first: -Board Games! You're able to rent board games for $2 and there's plenty to choose from. Childhood games like; Sorry, Mousetrap, Guess Who, etc. Or check out some more adult games like; Cards Against Humanity, Catan, scatagories, etc. -Drink specials! Sunday drink specials include: $4 rail drinks along with beer and house wine. There's a full bar with random bottles/cans. -BYOF! Since there's no kitchen at Board Room you're able to bring in whatever food you want. We had an entire table of snacks without issues. -Food delivery! Several places nearby will give you a discount and deliver the food right to you. Flippers Pizza is two stores over and gives you a 15%-20% discount. We had a great time and the bartender Beth was awesome. Around 3pm on Sunday it started to get a little loud which was our que to leave. We'll definitely go back and really enjoyed hanging out in such a cool place on a rainy Sunday afternoon. read more

Board Room is definitely a little gem in D.C. Board Room is a bar that has a ton of board games for rent (for $2/ea.). The selection of board games is pretty substantial - they have everything from great party choices (Cards Against Humanity, Apples to Apples) to more intense strategy games (Settlers of Catan). There's no food here but a decent selection of beers and mixed drinks, all priced around what you'd find at other bars in D.C. As awesome as Board Room is, a few caveats apply. Because this is yet another bar in a rowhome, space is available but sometimes a bit limited. Tables definitely seem to go quickly, though there's an upstairs overflow available. There's only one box of Cards Against Humanity, which is definitely a mistake - the demand for that game is way too high. In general, you may find many board games missing pieces, which can be something of a disappointment. Most critically, because this is a bar, the obvious caveat of noise and craziness applies: don't expect a quiet "professional" atmosphere, but rather a moderately busy bar featuring people yelling about board games. With all of those caveats aside, this is a great place, and I'd highly recommend it. read more

Good concept, festive crowd. We were there the Sunday night before Memorial Day to play - obviously - Cards Against Humanity. The whole place was pretty crowded and we only barely found a table for our group of 8, and we had to wait for CAH for a little while. Luckily my friend just happened to be carrying around about a half set of the card game in her purse, so we used that until we could grab a full set. So yeah, we got nice and inappropriate for about an hour an a half up on the top floor. (Note for Cards Against Humanity newbies: The best possible white card (answer card) to the black card (question card) will always be the one you pick up from the draw pile right after you already put down your answer. Always.) But anyway, this place really has to do something about those hand-crafted cocktails of theirs. I was in a cocktail-y mood, so I ordered two: the Icebreaker, which sounded delish: House-crafted hibiscus soda, vodka, St. Germaine and a lime, and the Adult Vanilla Cola: House-crafted cola, vanilla vodka, and a cherry. The Icebreaker was especially disappointing and flavorless. It almost tasted like a vodka and tonic. The adult vanilla cola was fine, but uninspired. Basically, you'd be better off sticking with the pretty good beer selection here. read more
