So, was very excited to go find a place to play some games and relax. Being a bit of a board game nerd, I was expecting to find a well curated and cared for set of games to enjoy with my family. The games are just jammed on a few shelves by the door and very beat up. Played Azul, Ticket to Ride SF, Qwirkle, Llamas Unleashed. All were missing pieces, direction books either missing or just completely torn and disassembled. The tables are really too low for games and you play hunched over and have to yell at each other as the place gets very loud. Good selection of local beers and a full bar. No food, but bringing your own is fine. Good for casual gaming/party gaming. They have some bigger games there that I can't even imaging fitting on the tables they have. Lots of TVs with general sports on them. Mostly a board gamed theme sports bar. But it must be working for them as at night they will charge you $3 per game. Not sure if you get a discount for missing pieces. read more

While I have not tried the bar here, I found this to be a very affordable option for groups of friends. There is a wall of board games near the entrance, along with staff checking IDs. During happy hour, games are free, and outside of those hours each game costs $3. There are tables both downstairs and upstairs that can accommodate groups of different sizes, though the bar is only located on the lower level. The board games were not in the best condition, though the selection itself was solid. Most of the options leaned toward casual games like Werewolf, Exploding Kittens, and Avalon, but there were also longer titles such as Betrayal at House on the Hill and Catan. I do wish there had been a clear list of available games and a way to track what was currently checked out. We played Pandemic, and the cards were worn, with several pieces missing. The restrooms were also not the cleanest. There was visible residue in the drains and noticeable grime on the floors. Overall, cleanliness could use improvement. That said, the pricing across the board is reasonable and significantly cheaper than many other entertainment options in DC, which makes it an appealing choice despite its shortcomings. read more

Met up with a friend here in early October during my stay in Arlington. He suggested this spot as it was near his hotel room. Once he mentioned the name of this place, it reminded me of a location in the Clarendon area with the same name; one that was about brews and board games. I wondered if this place would be identical to that. Well upon entering, it hit me that it is similar but with fewer tables due to the size of the building. All the tables were packed with people playing board games such as Scrabble and Sorry. My friend was at the bar area since tvs were blaring there and we hung there. We sipped on beers the entire time and chatted it up. Beer selection does have a few locals and some domestic favorites; we switched between some IPAs and the Porter (forgot the names/types sadly) which were tasty. The bartender made sure our beers were always filled up which was attentive of him. The interior has some side tables at the front and more in the back along with some shelves of board games available for the choosing. Not sure of the rules regarding picking your game but this is a great concept in the DC area; especially if you don't want to drink alcohol and only want games for socializing. If you don't want to game and just drink, the bar area is there for that too. There's a good amount of seating at the bar and I'm glad my friend got a spot for us there. It's a clean joint that serves a good purpose. We enjoyed our time and then started getting hungry and realized they don't serve food. That's when we decided to saddle up and head out for grub. As we walked out the door, we talked about meeting up here again when I'm in Arlington/DC; maybe next time we'll do a game of Monopoly for old time sake! read more

We first stopped in here about 1am, after finally arriving at our hotel down the street. From what I found in my searches, this place was the only place open late in the immediate area. We were just interested in having a couple of drinks to decompress from our long drive. There were not many patrons here when we arrived and the bartender did not seem too excited to be there. Hubs went simple and just ordered beers. I ordered fancy cocktails and they were delicious! The Mulled cider definitely hit the spot. I wish we were able to spend more time here. There were so many games to play and the space was massive. I definitely will stop in again if we are in the area. read more

Board Room is a great place to gather with friends for beer, games, and sports! There are plenty of large tables, but they have a chess tournament upstairs on Mondays so just be aware! The service was fast and there's a wide selection of beers- lots of local as well. It's bring your own food as well, which I did not research before hand, but there are plenty of restaurants nearby to order from. Would definitely come back for a chill night of gaming. read more

I hadn't been to Board Room in a number of years, so I didn't know that there was free game play during happy hours. I was there with a group and we'd spent all day in a workshop, so it was perfect to play simple games like Sorry with a drink before our dinner reservation began. This spot is perfect for a chill evening with friends!! They have a big assortment of games of all types to play while you chat and/or drink. It is solely a bar without any food but you are allowed to bring in outside food which is great. I loved spending time here, playing games and talking. The Board Room is a great place to chill and play board games with your friends. The bar has a great variety of beer, wine and cocktails. The area is large enough for groups and also provides cozy spaces for couples to hang out. They host recurring themed game nights and other events. My husband and I only had time for a quick stop before going to dinner at a nearby restaurant, which is another good point, they do not serve food at the Board Room, but there are plenty of nearby eateries. Pretty packed for a Saturday, we came in for a bit of gaming and sat upstairs. They definitely could keep the place a little more clean and organized (Mismatched chairs, some tables with no chairs, empty glasses) but had a huge selection of games. Been to Board Room a few times over the years. It's a large place with long bar area, good beers, and prices comparable to other DC bars. I have met here for birthday parties, events, etc., and we've played games. They have an upstairs area as well as downstairs where the bar is. People can rent games or bring their own to play. Service was always relatively good, but it can sometimes be crowded, so you might have to wait a bit for a drink, but I've always observed the staff hustling. The one negative is that they don't have food here, but there are plenty of restaurants nearby in Dupont Circle, and they don't mind people bringing in food. There's also a newer location in Arlington, which does have a food menu, but I haven't been to that location yet. Overall, a cool place. read more

We went to board room last year during the whiskey walk! We were excited to return and try another game ! This time we played guess who. The same bar tender was there from last year- we remembered her smiling face ! We didn't have any food but we enjoyed a few beers (last year) -they always have different flavors and concoctions! This year there was a cute spike hot cocoa and the whiskey was different than the original flavor on the card/website. I actually liked this whiskey the best- something with apple.... The ambiance was friendly- everyone grabbed a game and a drink just had a chill vibe! Side note I won the guess who game ! I wasn't a fan... the drinks were expensive and not good. I got the strawberry basil lemonade and it was so tart/sour that it was undrinkable. I literally took a sip and the bar tender didn't offer to remake it or replace it or anything even after I said I didn't like it (and still charged for it, even though I didn't drink it lol). I will caveat that I prefer the location in Arlington which I feel has a better space and isn't quite as loud. They get 4 stars, this one gets 3.5 :) The biggest detractor on a Friday or Saturday night is the noise level in this space which makes it hard to play any games where you need to communicate (pandemic legacy is out). Plus the tables are small so Ark Nova is out (which needs like 10 tables to setup), but smaller games with less setup work perfectly. Whether visiting the location in Arlington or DC though, the concept is great. Especially if you are like me and have a teeny tiny apartment where your coffee table doubles as your dining table and there is no rooms for extra bodies to play even the simplest game. The space offers tables, chairs, beverages of the alcohol variety and food -- even better, at the end of the game night, no clean-up! I get to return home to a tiny - yet clean! - apartment :) I enjoy these nights out so much that I have opted to do this for two of my birthdays and am planning to do so for my next in April (at the Arlington location) - so I guess that says something... Finally, I cannot speak to the actual games they have on prem -- I always bring my own, which you are also permitted to do, so I can't say whether or not their selection is good or not... Hosted an event for my partners birthday party. It was for a large group of approx. 20 so I had to go through the process of submitting a request for space which turned out to be pretty seamless! I was initially concerned that they would only give us a couple of tables given the celebration was during their peak hours but they blocked off the perfect amount of space. I came here for a date on Saturday night and the place was very busy. It is two floors and both floors were extremely busy. It definitely caters to a young crowd so I was one of the oldest people here for sure. My date and I were able to snag two bar seats and we played Backgammon for a few hours. The bar service was good. We only had a round of drinks and grabbed 3 games, which they charge you $3 for each game you take off the shelf and you either pay the guy at the door in cash or the bartender by card or cash. The bill was around $35, to you figure $26 for two drinks when you subtract the board games. It was a decent night overall. Came here with my nephew to play some games, have some drinks, and just catch up on life. The place is essentially a bar that provides games you can play. They have tons of games, but charge for using them. There is no food service but they allow you to order food to be delivered. I like the concept of hanging out using a board game as an excuse to get together. I was indeed able to catch up with my nephew and we had a great time. My one complaint is lack of communication/signs to prepare people for reserved areas. We arrived around 3 pm and sat on the upper level. Around 3:55 an employee asked every table that was upstairs that we needed to leave the floor as they had an event at 4. Prior to this notice there wasn't a sign anywhere when we arrived at 3 to indicate us that there would be an event and to plan to move at a certain time. Give the Board Room some love! It's a fun place to hang out pre-covid and my friends and I enjoyed it as a casual place to grab a drink and play games like Ticket to Ride, Jenga, and more. I always thought that it was nice that they let you bring outside food in because they don't serve food. We always brought in pizza, Thai, or Chinese food with Flippin' Pizza, Thaipoon, City Lights of China, and more restaurants pretty much next door. For the time being, it's a spiked lemonade stand. They have hot drinks now like boozy hot chocolate which they make in-house and it is DELICIOUS! They are super friendly too and are extra grateful for the support during this difficult time. Stopped by this place the other day after brunch because it was the highest-rated bar within walking distance. They have a daily happy hour from 4-7 or 3-7 and drinks are super affordable. I liked the many games that they had and that the bar felt like a place where people could really connect since the music was low and there were tons of things to do over a drink. Love love love this place. Four of us went on a Saturday around 2 PM and it was not packed at all making it so enjoyable to grab a table and pick whatever games that were available. We found out happy hour was 12 to 7 so for our duration of the time we spent there, we were able to get great drinks and play fun games for free. I do know after 7 o'clock the drink prices increase as well as a three dollar rental fee for games, but to be honest that is very reasonable because they use it to replace games in case they are broken/lost. I definitely recommend this place. It is a fun place to hang out even if you don't wanna play board games or even if you do wanna play board games and don't wanna drink it's the best of both worlds. We will definitely be coming again. I also really liked how it was not super loud in there as you could really focus on your table in your games while listening to music in the background. They allow outside food as they do not serve their own, so it is really nice to experience some local food in the area. read more

Board games + beer?! Sounds like a genius combo. I absolutely loved this place. My friends and I ran into it while walking around in DC. We're the group of friends that gets together to play some games on the weekend while sipping on some drinks. When you walk in, the whole right wall is full of pretty much any board game you can think of. It's $2 to check out a game but you can use it for an unlimited amount of time.
