This place is adorable!! Definitely not what I expected to find in this part of Mesa. So happy to have found it. I thought for sure I'd be stuck looking for an Applebees for a quick drink. Not only was the mimosa amazing, but the food menu look fantastic as well! Cant wait to go back and try the food! read more

Board & Batten - BlackBerry Mimosa - New American Near Me - Mesa, Arizona

I have long debated whether to write this review or not, and have finally decided to go ahead and provide a warning to new customers that may choose to go to Board and Batten. I honestly, want to give the restaurant a 5 star rating, the food is honestly very good, the service is great and the drinks are well done. My reason for a 1 star review is simple, the restaurant fails on the most basic tenant of business -- satisfy the customer. When I eat out, I frequently make changes to the sides that come with my main course in order to comply with diet restrictions that I have. When I requested a "swap" of sides to go with my steak, my server's eyes bulged and he began to sweat, with a look of "oh, crap, here we go" on his face. He explained to me that the chef does not allow changes to the dishes as listed on the menu. The chef does not want to damage his artistic vision of the meal by swapping potatoes for steamed spinach with a steak, or some other customer chosen abomination. He went on to explain that if there is an allergy, the chef is happy to remove a side (and of course charge full price), but not swap or add (there are no individual sides on the menu). And so began my months long debate on whether to submit a review of the restaurant or not. I desperately want to support upscale restaurants in Mesa, and I appreciate an artist presenting his/her vision to the world. However, at the end of the day, my basic purpose in going out to eat is to spend time with friends or family, and to facilitate that interaction with a drink and a good meal. If you have any diet restrictions or food allergies, I recommend that you avoid Board and Batten, or be prepared to be limited to the house salad for your meal (you might get to choose the dressing). read more

Cute little place, tucked away in Mesa. My boyfriend and I stopped in for a drink. We were pleasantly surprised by the atmosphere inside and out. Had the short ribs and wife had the chicken pot pie. Pot pie is deconstructed and nicely presented. Great flavor and nice lunch portion. Short ribs were tasty and the mix vegs were properly cooked. Liked the fingerling potatoes too. Yummy, give it a try. read more

The brand new Board and Batten was superb. I went with 9 others. I think we got every entree but the fried chicken. I'm sure it's fabulous too, there was not one drop left on anyone's plate. We all (couples) ordered the bread In Terra cotta pot!!! Presentation A+. It tasted as good as it looked. Herb butter to slather on. Yum. Next my hubby and I split the caprese salad. Just perfect as a starter. I got the duck. Never had duck before but a friend had been at tasting opening and told me she would buy my dinner if I didn't like it. It was just like butter no fat, or gamey tasting. If I hadn't know what I ordered I would of thought it was a pork tenderloin.. the beef short ribs were a hit as well as the white fish and risotto. We are planning on using there gorgeous patio and fire pit area. Oana was our server and her joy for her job showed every minute of our time there. read more

Service was excellent, Lauren I believe. Ambiance is beautiful. Our chopped salad was nothing special. Small salad for the price in a white bowl with no eye appeal. Mainly lettuce with some rubbery chicken. I will give you another try and order something else next time. read more

Probably the best somewhat upscale restaurant bar spot in Mesa! Food is OUTSTANDING. We had the pastas, the grilled portabella (so good!), and a house salad which was light but delicious. Service is 10/10. Super cute place, well decorated, with both in and outside seating. They even have a fire and couch area. Can't wait to return. read more

Wonderful place! The food is excellent and the staff is very friendly. Sitting outside is a joy when the weather is nice.

Our dinner group had a wonderful time dinning there Wednesday evening, first time for all but two of us. Four of us had the Sonoran Pasta Co. Rigatoni, the tomato braised lamb was so flavorful (I was truly thinking of licking the bowl). All four of us just kept saying yum in between bites. The others had the Grilled Pork Chop, Flattened Chicken and the Beef Tournedos and they raved about the flavors and the quality. This truly is a hidden gem with a very attentive staff and fantastic chief. We will definitely be coming back and hope to sit outside in their charming courtyard. read more

First time here and the food was excellent! Staff kept up to date with our table wait time. Highly recommend

1st time here... wanted to try out a new place since I recently got a GC from there and we don't have a great selection in Mesa. Az anyway!!! I went Wednesday, July 24th @ 12pm. When we arrived there were already some people there as well as a big party. The server was super nice... but she was the only one taking orders. The hostess sat you down and that was all she did. It got super busy. Still only one server... but wait the owner was around BUT did not lift a finger to help the young server. The chef was even bringing everyone's food out!!! We asked for a craft of water like the other tables... no joke it was 3/4 empty. Had to ask the hostess to fill since we were not sure when we would see our server again!!! As for the food... my southwest salad was ok. It was a good portion. Chicken had no flavor to it at all!!! Then on to the "Filet" slider..... a glorified disgusting tasting burger. The owner said they grind up the filet!!!! It was so gross!! The ice tea was soooo gross too... how do u screw that up???? The only good thing was our entire meal was comp!! I have been to restaurants where the owner steps in and helps. No... not this one!!!! I don't think he has much experience in the food industry!!! Just an observation! read more

This place is 5 stars for ambience, service, and food! There was nice music, pretty white strung lights, and cute flowers on our table. Our server Anna was attentive, patient with us deciding, and made a great suggestion to try their date focaccia appy. That and the duck ragu pasta were DIVINE along with a glass of the madness and cures red blend! I can't wait till next time :) read more

We had never heard of this restaurant and a friend recommended it for our small group dinner outing. We were pleasantly surprised by the quaint but upscale feel of the building and patio. We started with drinks at the bar and the bartender was very nice and timely with our cocktails. Upon being seated we were immediately attended to and specials and recommendations were provided. We all ordered something different and everyone was very happy with their choices. The appetizers were all big hits with us except the charcuterie which was a little lacking in variety. The salmon on avocado toast was very nice and the bacon wrapped dates were a big hit! We ate outside on the patio which has great aviance and despite the very chilly night was nicely heated so we were all quite comfortable. Thanks for a great night out, Board and Batten. read more

First time at Board & Batten and YOU have to go too! It's the cutest little spot with amazing food. The olives appetizer plate is to die for. IT WAS AMAZING!! I've been wanting to try this place for a while. When you are walking up to the restaurant it's just lovely. Then the couches and fireplace on the patio made me want to come back just for cocktails But because it was a cool night we sat inside. Our server was wonderful. We had dates and also shrimp for the starters and they were fantastic. The cocktails were also good. The entrees were so good. One of us had the pork chop one had the lamb and two of us had the special which was pasta with shredded short ribs-really good. Then we had dessert and it was also a great finish to a great meal. The problem I have is that the minute we had our plates cleared the guy was there to take the plate away and it got so bad that he even cleared our water glasses so we were left sitting there with a total empty table. It felt like they wanted us to leave. It was still early in the evening, there were empty tables and the occupied tables were still eating and drinking. Our empty table made us feel uncomfortable and so we left. That's sad to me because we like to linger after our dinner and talk with our dinner companions. We were only at this place for 1 hour and 45 minutes total. I think we should have been able to linger a while longer.... I actually was expecting the guy to wipe the table down while we were still sitting there. Not sure we will be back read more

I got the duck risotto and my life has changed. This risotto was sooooo good I ate my whole plate, and I never do that. Also, I'm not a fan of caramel, I feel like it can get too sticky and sweet at times, but my grandma wanted to split the salted caramel thing. It was also amazing! I didn't get to see the dessert menu because grandma ordered it without a menu. It had a lemon bar taste to it, it's hard to explain, but I loved it! read more
