Great coffee, worst pastries I've ever had. We bought 2 muffins and a croissant to go. She asked if we wanted them heated. We got them to the car and none of them were warmed. They looked great but when we buy into them, not only were they not warmed, they were so stale they were completely inedible. If we hadn't been headed out of town I would have gone back to get my money back because they weren't cheap. We threw them away at our next stop and ate the granola bars we had in the car instead. Bluff City Coffee is great. There is plenty of indoor seating, and they have outdoor seating, which is great here in Memphis where the weather if typically warm. They have a long menu of coffees, and they have plenty of signature items, as well. Their pastries and bagels are excellent, but make sure to get there early for the best selection. If you're not a coffee aficionado, they're also more than happy to translate your normal Starbucks order into something they have, and it will probably be much better quality. Love it! read more

Although the food and drinks are decent, this place smells terrible. I want to come here more often but am deterred by the fact that my clothes and hair hold the stench for the rest of the day. I went for breakfast with two friends on a Saturday when the Race for the Cure and River Arts Festival. Bluff City was busy to say the least. I ordered the turkey pesto quiche. It was okay, I feel like I could tell it was pre cooked and not fresh. My friend likes her yogurt, and another friend ordered a sun dried breakfast sandwich which she was such a fan of! Me too, a little jealous. I gave them three stars because they were so busy they were a little slow. And because the quiche had turkey lunch meat in it. read more

Just moved to Memphis and made my first visit here today - man was I disappointed! The employees were just so rude! I was walking by with my small dog and popped my head in to see if I could look at a menu outside and place an order to go. They just looked at me with total stink faces and then clearly started whispering and talking about me as soon as I turned around - bad enough that even another customer in the store came up to me after (more on that to come) I completely respect and understand the right for businesses, especially those serving food to not allow pets in their establishments - BUTTT 1. Just say that instead of having a stink face and talking passive aggressively about your customers behind their backs 2. If you don't want to serve me then just say so. But keep in mind even Starbucks will come to the door, take you order and bring you your drink when you're walking your dog in the morning. Again, I could see if they were busy, but they literally had 2 existing customers in there the entire time, with 2 employees working (1 of which just stood at the cash register the entire time doing nothing). After placing my order, I told them I would wait outside and asked if they would just like to knock on the door when the order was ready so I wouldn't have to come back in holding my dog. They said no it'll just be on the counter when it's done - seriously, you can't move 10 feet to the door, even though you don't want me in there?? Since I couldn't see the counter from outside I sat and waited for what seemed like a reasonable amount of time and then went in. As I was doing so, another customer that had witnessed the whole exchanged was up at the counter getting my order together for me bringing it over. She was so incredibly kind and told me how ridiculous the whole situation was and how she heard the whole thing and if they wouldn't move to get it she would. While all this is happening, that employee was still standing at the cash register staring with a stink face -- RME After all of that I got home and the bagel sandwich I ordered was wrong - agh, what can you do. I work from home and I've been wanting to find a great local place to work 2-3 days a week - this would have been a convenient spot, but I guess I've got to keep looking. read more

Maybe it's because we're from Seattle, but this place was a disappointment. I asked the Husband how his latte was. "Um, I think it might be the worst latter I've ever had." He described it as flavored milk, without much flavor. They serve Oregon chai, which even the barista acknowledged isn't very good (so why serve it?). Instead, I got a hot chocolate. They use Ghirardelli syrup, but it was still mediocre at best. Good customer service, but not worth the prices, which were a little more than average. read more

This is a great little coffee shop! They also have a great selection of breakfast sandwiches and homemade pastries. I had a non-fat, sugar-free vanilla latte and the turkey sausage, cheese, and egg sandwich on a poppy seed bagel. It was hot and fresh and absolutely delicious. Bluff City Coffee is a decent-sized, not overcrowded coffee shop in the South Main Arts District. It's honestly not revolutionary, but there aren't too many coffee shops in this area, so it's nice that it's here. I got an iced coffee (Americano), which tasted pretty standard. It wasn't bad. A little more expensive than Starbucks, though ($3.71 for a medium), which is a negative. The atmosphere isn't particularly special (in my opinion), which is kind of a wasted opportunity because they have pretty good branding and I think that they could really do a lot with the coffee shop. Anyway, come here for okay coffee. Nothing special to look out for, though. read more

Went in during River Arts Fest. They weren't taking credit cards but I guess that didn't matter because I couldn't get to the point of ordering. Neither my boyfriend nor I could smell coffee there was such a strong chemical smell that when you opened your mouth you could taste it. I left with a raging headache and no coffee. read more

There is no other way to say this -Bluff City Coffee is a cute coffee shop. I love that it is downtown on Main Street and that the prices are reasonable (with free wifi nonetheless). The staff is friendly and there are comfy chairs and tables for working on your laptop (much better than staring at my computer from my home office). There are yummy snacks and I can't get over the fact that my green tea latte is better here than my addiction, Starbucks. Will definitely be back! read more

I really do not like this place at all. I work on South Main very close to it and am forced to go there if I forget my lunch or breakfast, or need a place outside of the office for client meetings. The staff is awful. They always seem high and/or lazy. And, the worst part is that the owner is often sitting at a table in the back working - I don't understand how he does not realize this!!! I never get pastries because I have seen one too many flies in the pastry box. So. Gross. Also, they do not know how to make a decent cup of tea. I know it's a coffee place, but they don't know how to properly steep tea like other local coffee shops will do. Also, if you want iced green tea, they put the tea bag in hot water for maybe 10 seconds, then fill the cup with ice.... NO. Not how it is supposed to be done at all. I don't really love regular coffee, but I do love specialty drinks - anywhere but Bluff City Coffee. I've not had a Cafe Americano or Latte or frozen coffee that I like here. Honestly, I could get past most of the taste issues if the staff was better!! I get very frustrated when I go in there because they are so slow and seem not to care about the customer's time. Sometimes I drive inconveniently all the way to Starbucks on Second Street if I have to time in stead of having to deal with the people at BCC which is a good 1 minute walk from my office. Lastly, they stop serving the three gluten free options on the menu - cookies, granola bar and frittata. BUT they still have it listed on their menu as an item. So annoying. Sorry this is just a negative review, but you have to understand this does not stem from just one visit. It stems from 40+ visits over the past three years. Bluff City Coffee is a fun little coffee shop in the heart of the South Main Arts District, and it is now heading its way into my list of favorite coffee shops. In past experiences, things have not been just right. However, my latest experience has turned my opinion around. It's atmosphere is just as a coffee shop should be: quiet and relaxed. It does not have the comfy chairs that many places seem to have, but I overheard the owner explain why. He said that most of their customers are the grab-and-go type (like me) or are there to do business, and they wanted more of a place to fit these purposes. Therefore, when he took the place over a couple years ago, he replaced the cozy chairs with tables. The girl who made my coffee this chilly Monday morning has a great smile and was very nice. She can also make a mean cup of joe. I ordered a small skinny vanilla latte. It wasn't to sweet (*cough* Starbucks) and it wasn't so scalding hot that I had to wait 30 minutes to start enjoying it. I could sip its goodness immediately. If I lived Downtown, I would come here more often. However, it is pretty out of the way of most of my days. Whenever in the area though, I recommend stopping in to warm up. We all know winters by the river are colder than in the rest of the city. That's where this place comes in. read more

Came in on a Sunday afternoon. One person working there to take orders, get/make food, make drinks etc. 24 min to get a latte. Seriously. Everyone waiting for drinks was annoyed. I received a "compliment" from what appears to be the owner that I just deleted (I had options to accept or delete). It said "given the cameras and customer numbers question the extreme wait." Seriously? What would be my motivation to make that up? It was bad enough that my dad came in from the car thinking we had gone somewhere else. Had the owner actually checked the cameras or customer numbers he would have confirmed not questioned what I said. Almost a year later and I still love it! Visited this morning and left with a smile. I'm an in and out kind of coffee shop customer, which each time I've been to Bluff City Coffee I've had quick and fabulous service. I love the decor and feel of this place as well. Each time I'm in there I don't want to leave because it seems so inviting. The noise level has also been low when I've visited. Today though I tried the peanut butter granola bar - pure heaven. I think it may be better than a cupcake in my book (and I LOVE cupcakes!). So delicious! It also dawned on me that this place opens at 630am during the week, so for downtowners looking to bring pasty items to an early morning meeting - this place is a must try! I may be the last one to have made that connection, but it makes me happy knowing I have an early morning spot outside of a donut shot to grab treats for my early meetings! read more

I love this little downtown coffee joint. The location is great in the South Main area. An ideal Saturday morning- grab a coffee, do some local Memphis shopping (within walking distance) and hit up the farmers market. I had a latte there this past weekend. It wasn't too sweet, just the perfect amount of sugar and milk. The staff is friendly and while you're waiting you can catch up on all of the neighborhood gossip. I didn't try any of the food, but they have many selections of pastries and breakfast/lunch sandwiches. The window seats are the perfect place to enjoy your beverage and take in some people watching. Very convenient location. Friendly baristas, handmade yummy food - faves include the breakfast sandwiches & Nutella pop tart! During the weekends or if an event is happening in the area, it can get quite busy in here. Don't be dumb please. I like to stop in here on Saturday mornings and walk down to the Farmer's Market with a coffee. Sometimes I'll grab a latte or other drink as well. I always enjoy what I get and staff is always great! The space is small, not necessarily a place to come and sit and study for hours, but a great place to grab a cup of coffee when you are downtown. I'm so disappointed of this place. I was recommended to come here while in town for work. The woman who took my order looked as if it were painful to not look completely miserable. She was a blonde/violet with black frame glasses so beware. She was eating food and counting tips befire she gave me my coffee cake right from the bakery case. I gave her a tip to hopefully cheer her up. The woman who made my coffee was very nice. The coffee cake was disgusting and then I looked at it a saw why...mold on it!!! So gross. Bluff City Coffee seems to be the only option. And a good cup of black do they offer.
