Maybe it was a bad idea thinking of grabbing a meal on one of the busiest holiday of the year. Fourth of July.... We normally don't mind grabbing a meal at the bar as we had our pup with us. Well, a table was at least an hour and half to two hour wait. Nope, not waiting for that. Sometimes you're lucky with open seating downstairs but as it was a holiday, it was pretty much full. Luckily we were offered a seat upstairs at the bar which was perfect. Still a view of the pier and people watching was a nice touch to dinner. Jack, believe that was his name took care of us. Starting off with some espresso martini which was perfect. And of course their mussels and chorizo as a starter. Broth was great and very flavorful. Perfect pair with the mussels and chorizo as well as the tomatoes. Entrees, the prawn linguines. Simple but very flavorful with nice big prawns. And the gemelli pasta with scallops and shrimp. Now this dish was amazing as well. Big meaty scallops and shrimp. Not those tiny bay scallops. Service was excellent at the bar upstairs. It's great meeting people as you're sitting next to them. Easily top 3 favorite meals.. ever! We made a reservation on Fourth of July weekend for an early dinner to catch the sunset and got so lucky and was sat outside on the top deck. The views were stunning! I would recommend trying to get a seat at least upstairs! Food was INCREDIBLE. OH MY GOSH. My mouth is watering just thinking about it! My boyfriend got the surf and turf and I got the lobster. Both came with this amazing side of potatoes that we keep talking about until this day! It's probably the best potatoes I've ever had, please never take that off your menu! Our seafood appetizers were incredibly fresh, I would recommend getting the sashimi scallops they were so good! Service of course was great. They work as a team so everything came out quick and we were always attended to even if our server wasn't around! Loved how kind and bubbly their staff is here! All the staff were friendly, and the bartender was knowledgeable, he recommended the Cali-Squeezed Blood Orange Hefeweizen, which turned out to be very refreshing. For food, I started with the crab cakes as an appetizer, then had the cioppino and pesto pasta for my main entrées. Everything tasted great, though I've had better cioppino elsewhere. We live in San Diego. We've hit a few of the Bluewater's around town. This one seems to be the best. It leans to the nicer side versus casual. Hostesses are always super friendly as are the servers. The food here may be better than in OB and Carlsbad. The clam chowder was bomb. My sand dabs (basic white fish) with white caper sauce was decent. 7/10. One downside is that the sides were ice cold, as in maybe they tried to serve the prior evenings portions cold and I had to send it back. They brought back piping hot sides maybe 2 minutes later. This may also be one of the more family friendly restaurants. Boosters, well trained staff. We don't let our kids iPad often but when we are meeting up with other family members and need a more social dinner we let them do art till food comes then iPads as they eat. Great spot. Happy hour happiness! I will remember the view and the quality drinks and eats as some of the best from our Santa Barbara trip. Arriving at 4, we joined a solo diner at the upstairs bar for happy hour and view. Unfortunately the specials aren't available on the patio, so we had our hostess redirect us to the bar. Service wore crisply pressed shirts but was unpretentious. The view is superb, right across the street from the beach. I started with the captain's Mai Tai, and it was large and strong and I truly didn't need another drink afterwards! Good humor on the enamel mug drink cup as well. Yo ho ho and a bottle of rum! Husband had an amber draft very value priced. Our charred edamame was delicious but deadly hot. I focused on eating the rich and cheesy crab and artichoke dip, which was a very large portion and served with tortilla chips. The blackened fish tacos were excellent, we both ordered the same dish. Two beautiful grilled tacos for $9 on quality corn tortillas, with a huge slice of fresh avocado on top. I am not always a fan of green sauce but the tacos did not need any more garnish. Service changed over before we left, there was a new bartender but no further drinks were required. Sign me up again matey, next time I am in town. This was my favorite place! read more

Came here on my last night of a Santa Barbara vacation. Close to the hotel and came with a recommendation. Dined a bit early on a Saturday (5:30pm) and was seated immediately. Place was cozy with a good atmosphere. Lighting a bit dark for me, but that's a personal preference. Service was very friendly and attentive. Bread was good. Our group of 4 dropped in without reservations for an early dinner on a Saturday. We were greeted with a smile and promise to accommodate our group. We sat at a nice table and promptly served. Very disappointing meal. The salmon was seriously overcooked which really shouldn't happen at a fish restaurant. All the sides on the plate were swimming in grease. After enjoying two good meals at the Bluewater Grill in the past several months, my third dinner ended up with both me & my husband having food poisoning, from what we surmised was the fish and chips we both had for dinner. I called the next day to let the manager know, as a courtesy, what dish we both ate, and around what time, so that she could ensure no other diner was affected. I was told to email the manager which I did, in the afternoon but by the evening I called again, because I hadn't heard back, and I thought this was information she might want sooner rather than later. After waiting 10 minutes on hold, the first thing that Sara, the manager, told me was that she "got my email but she was busy running around." Then she asks me if I had water or breakfast that day, because you know, so many of their customers have nothing better to do than call their restaurant and say they got sick on fish and chips... I reassured manager Sara that I was just calling so that no one else ate a bad batch of fish and was not looking for a comped meal, because I have no intention of ever setting foot in the Blue Water Grill, ever. Whatever good impression that I had of the BlueWater Grill on those first two meals went out the door, not because of the food poisoning, but rather because of how it was handled by a clearly frazzled and unprofessional manager Sara. Hire good people, because it's called Hospital Management for a reason. read more

Bluewater Grill, has branches at several different California beach and/or tourist towns and destinations. Since I visit Santa Barbara regularly (to savor their different culinary offerings), this restaurant was next on my list. It sits on a pristine location, diametrically opposite the Pier, with a captivating architecture (the lighthouse) that is integrated into its structure. There is seating inside and outside, but you must go upstairs, sit on the balcony to have mesmerizing views of the ocean, sniff the sea breeze, view the boats and Stearn's Wharf. I already had breakfast a few blocks away, but I was still longing, but only for Oysters. And that is what I ordered. First came the warm sourdough bread, crispy on the outside and tender on the inside, accompanied by soft butter. Lovely. Then my order, the Oysters Rockefeller, one of my favorite dishes, at any fresh seafood eatery. It comprised of four pieces, usual baked style, but in this case, overdosed with Romano Cheese, maybe with even added salt, that made it difficult to even taste the oysters. Creamy spinach was part of the recipe, nicely done, but there was zero bacon (on the menu). I could not finish the dish and ate only two of the four oysters. First time for me. When the staff asked how the dish was, I clearly explained my disappointment. They did not seem to care. Oh well. You win some. And you loose some. read more

Walked along the beach on the last day of my vacation, and wanted to find somewhere with good seafood. The 2 bigger name places I found were going to be swamped, and frankly I was hungover and not in the mood for bullshit. Since I was by the funk zone, did a quick search and realized that Blue Water Grill was open. Pretty big place with a nice balcony, so I sat outside up there. Service was very friendly and attentive. Vibe was very relaxed even if the menu/setup reflected clearly that they were a chain; not the most unusual thing for a seafood place, and they're at least CA-based, so glad I didn't judge the book by its cover. Got a whiskey and ginger-type cocktail that wasn't very well made. Would normally not order something like this, but didn't want beer (they mostly had IPAs) and didn't want something sweet. It was drinkable and I didn't want to be a pain in the ass solo, so ended up being too polite to send it back. For my main I got the sanddabs, which are a small whitefish, which came with scalloped potatoes, spinach and a lemon caper beurre blanc sauce. This was really upscale hangover food, and I mean that in a good way. The sanddabs was superb with no fishy flavor whatsoever and was complimented well by the sauce. There was a huge portion of potatoes here however they were very good too. With a more measured amount of spinach, this made for a hearty meal. I was skeptical but would come back here in a heartbeat. May be a local CA chain, however very pleasant food and atmosphere. Just maybe stick to beer. read more

As a full time RV'er we always save Wednesday dinner nights for eating out in the city we are visiting for the week. We love to support local and try new places. We were all craving some seafood but my daughter and I really wanted a good lobster roll. This was one of the only places that had a WARM lobster roll on the menu. We were SOLD so I went ahead and made reservations. Upon arrival we were greeted promptly by a manager because the hostess was seating the group that walked in prior. He confirmed our reservation and took us to a nice, quiet table. The lights were just right, not too bright and not too dark. My husband and I ordered some drinks and our kids enjoyed the "shark attack" drink. Jack made the presentation of this drink so much fun for the kids. His service was ABOVE AND BEYOND. He let us play a few round of the game we brought as we like to play cards or dominos as a family and came back to take our order and checked on us often. As I said we travel all over, this restaurant was clean, cozy and clearly well taken care of. The servers were treated well from what I could see and that extended onto the service they provided to us guests. 10/10 JACK hit the mark! We were able to secure a table on the patio upstairs facing the ocean, which made the food so much more delicious than they already are. Couldn't decide between the Manhattan style or New England Clam Chowder so we ordered half and half. Both were delicious! Then we started on the crab cakes, which was nice, and lemon pepper Mahi Mahi, which blew me away with how tender and delicious it is.
