Bluestone is hands down the best restaurant for families in Evanston. Good service, decent food, and friendly atmosphere. We come here about once a week with the our 6 and 4 year old. Everyone knows our names ... How rare is that! They always have excellent specials. Some of out favorites on the regular menu - the BCO, meatloaf, chicken pot pie. The pizza is excellent as well, with a very thin crust. Good beers, too. Love that they now have temperance an Evanston brew on tap. After the family dinner hour, it also is a decent bar ... For the burbs anyway. Check the NU Wildcat basketball schedule if you come during basketball season. read more

Pretty terrible place overall. What went wrong? We went towards the end of a Saturday and they just screwed everything up. The drink order took 30 minutes, the food was sent out in 45 minutes after this, when they brought the pizza for my friend, part of it fell on the floor and she only had half a pizza. They offered to comp it which was nice, but after 45 minutes it was too much. On top of all that the burgers were not that great and the pizza was really bad. I've been here twice now. While the service and atmosphere are mediocre, the food is amazing. Each person's dish was top notch. My mom ordered the beef stroganoff, and the beef just melted in your mouth, not too heavy. The soups are amazing. Both times I ordered fish. The fish was never over done and tasted fresh; both times they were specials, and I wished I had enough room to finish it all. I couldn't believe how tasty the sauces were. In fact, from the six dishes I've sampled, all six were covered with sauces that were original and tasty. The servings are big. Even if you share there should be left overs. When you get big portions, they are typically big on starch low on protein but not here. If you are going for ambiance, it may not be your first choice, but for taste and affordability (considering the type of food), it's top notch. read more

This is a great sport for a casual meal with better than casual food. The atmosphere is upscale sports bar and there is outdoor dining along Central Street. I had the southwestern salad with grilled shrimp. The salad was large and flavorful--maybe slightly overdressed and the shrimp slightly overcooked, but not serious mistakes. My wife had the BBQ chicken salad which was just as good. The service was quick and friendly. There is a good selection of beers both in bottles and on tap. We were there on a weeknight and the place was full of families with kids. Given that it is a fairly loud and casual spot, the kids fit right in. This feels like a friendly neighborhood joint. I'm not sure if the host actually remembered us or not, but he sure acted like he did and that made us feel super welcome! The smoked wings were delicious! There were five of us and no one left hungry. Our server was attentive and our food came out hot and fast. It's not haute cuisine, but does not pretend to be. I live around the corner from Bluestone and have been there quite often. Here is my rundown... atmosphere: For a bar restaurant, it can get a little loud but nothing you can't talk over. servers: they are all nice and helpful and the food is generally served quickly. food: The menu items are hit and miss. I always stick with the hits but sometimes I stray. The Salads are fantastic. The wings are good. Pulled pork is not the best in town. Go to Hecky's for a better P.P. sandwich. The pizza are very thin and delicious. They do pour Guiness the right way which is nice. Love the Chicken Pot Pie. Parking: It's not great on that block but you can get something on the street within 3 blocks. read more

I really wanted to like this place and will definitely give it another try. The waitstaff is super nice and it is very family friendly. The downside is that the service is really slow. It took a while before anyone even came over to greet us, although they did acknowledge that we had to wait, so it was nice that they are conscientious of that, and all of our meals did not come together. We were pretty much done with our meals when the final one finally came. Also, there is a review here that the french onion soup is amazing. If I could give a negative star review I would. Family sat down, asked to move to two tables that were open because our party was larger, was told no. Then a bus boy harassed us about our party size and told us to "put our name in" for a new table and to move. Asked to talk to the manager.. apparently he's never practiced delivering a good experience for customers because he had no clue how to handle. Bluestone is a family tradition! Its truly a neighborhood place and many families, like mine, mark big events by having dinner or drinks there!! The atmosphere is warm and cozy! Its the perfect place after a football game in November and the outdoor patio makes it a fun destination in the summer! The food is also delicious and comforting. The Chicken Tortilla soup is a must have along with their burgers and pizzas. The pizza crust is so thin and the ingredients are so fresh that you leave satisfied, but not in a food coma! One of the bartenders is a thief. I went to this restaurant before a Northwestern football game and they had an outdoor patio made into a makeshift bar. I gave the bartender $20.00 for a $5.00 beer. As she was giving me change I told her to keep a dollar as a tip. She gave me four back. I told her I gave her $20 and she said I gave her $10. I am sure I gave her $20. She short changed me. I suggests she goes to mass and puts the $10 into the collection box. The rest of the experience was great. The waiter was awesome and the food was decent. However, I have to give this restaurant one star because the bartender steals from the customers. If you're in town for a Northwestern football or basketball game I would suggest going to a different spot. If you do decide to go here make sure they don't try to rip you off. read more

A solid place to eat but needs improvement. Service was great however I ordered the B.O.C. A meatloaf sandwich. It was decent but had WAY too much fat. It was more accurately description is pot roast sandwich with quality horseradish. I switched from fries to tater tots which was a decrease fro 4 to one. I came for drinks and desserts. Unfortunately the Margarita was very disappointing. It was not mixed properly, and the tequila and mix proportions were off. I had to send it back. I ordered the tres leches cake for dessert. When the waiter told me that the chef makes the tres leches from scratch everyone morning, I was really excited. Again, it was not as promised. We returned to the Bluestone and had a much better experience. My kids enjoyed the grown up Mac and cheese, and my husband had a BBQ chicken pizza that he really enjoyed. My burger with goat cheese was very tasty. I had the Bluestone margarita, which was delicious with just the right amount of salt. I didn't try it this time, but the fact that they have gluten free pasta on request is a nice feature. The service was attentive without being overbearing. Sorry, but this place needs some sort of overhaul. Service: Understaffed. The waitress was very sweet, but way overworked. One waitress for every table outside, which were all filled, is inadequate. Admittedly, it was a Friday, but it was commencement day for Northwestern. They had to know there would be a huge crowd. Food: "D" for quality and it's overpriced by about 20%. Ambiance: The outdoor seating is great and the interior looked nice. Other: The wine was $8.25 for a small serving. This place is a bustling bar packed with families with kids. Upon the Yelp reviews I ordered the smoked wings and the pot roast sandwich. The smoked wings were too salty for my liking and something I wouldn't order again. The pot roast sandwich was a pipping hot pile of meat that filled you up. The star of the meal were the sweet potato fries. I don't think I would be rushing back to this place but if I dine here again, sweet potato fries are what I am getting. read more

You know, at the end of the day, if you are looking for a good, honest place that can play to a diverse crowd with ease, Bluestone is a great choice. Is it the best place in Chicagoland to eat? Well Bluestone - you've lost a customer. I made the mistake of coming in on a "game day" but my first clue of how bad this place has become was there wasn't any purple or white to be found. Obviously folks in Evanston are avoiding this place like the plague, and I can understand why. The menu served on "gameday" is a collection of the worst bar food you could muster to sling out in a "pack em' in get em' out manner". When I inquired to my waitress if I could see the full menu, she smirked and said "sorry sir, it's gameday". Beer is also served in plastic cups - cute, but when I'm paying more than $7 for beer give me a glass. If I want the red solo cup, I'll stand with the wildcat faithful in the parking lot, who are obviously avoiding your place. Cozy look, but I found Bluestone crowded and noisy. I'd suggest making reservations, because the weekend dinner waits seem egregious. I ended up sitting at an uncomfortable bar table. The menu was boring American staples and the steak I had was obnoxiously chewy. The wings and other appetizer-ish favorites were good though and for lunch this might be a good place for kids. Worst services ever! We waited for a table for 20 mins which was fine it was a Saturday night. And we didn't mind waiting at all. When they called our name they asked if outside was good. I said no because it was getting cold and my children were cold. We were then told we had no choice since if we waited it would be another 35mins. We weren't given water and j had to ask 3 different times. Finally after the 3rd time we were given water that was room temp. We asked for crayons for our kids they never came, I have 2 kids with peanut allergies and told the waitress she said no worries she will let the cook know and as long as we don't order peanut butter and jelly we are good. My kids ordered Mac and cheese and sure enough as they were eating we found parts of another meal we didn't order in it. I will never eat there again read more

Went for dinner on Saturday night. Both the food and service were not good. We waited 10 minutes before we had to flag someone down to order our drinks. When we stopped the waitress we told her we had been waiting. Her response was "I know" and proceeded to take our drink orders. I ordered the Tinga chicken quesadilla. It tasted like chili. Not good at all. The waitress never came by to ask how our meal was. The quesadilla went uneaten. The bill took 15 minutes+ as the computers went down. We sometimes end up here when we want a meal with beer and don't want to go far. But if you are willing to drive, there are better places... In the winter I love their fireplace and laid back atmosphere...but the food is definitely mediocre, except for the burgers which are terrific...and I'll admit I am partial to the Southwestern salad. Otherwise, skip the other dishes (pizza is worse than awful, and everything else is just blah), and skip the margaritas (made from what tastes like a cheap mix and sold as a higher priced drink--how hard is it to make them fresh?). read more

This is a great spot for a low-key dinner. I would also like to commend them on the fact they have the friendliest and most gracious busboy of any I have ever met! Great food and a fun atmosphere. Salmon and ribs are excellent. Salmon is always properly cooked, seasoned right and very moist and juicy. French fries and other sides are all delicious. Nice salads too for you rabbits. I have eaten here many times and they never disappoint. They have many beers and alcohol choices and the prices are reasonable. You can sit outside under an umbrella on nice days and enjoy the quiet Central St scene. Many TVs in the place usually have sports on and it can get a bit loud when important games are on. There is a bar area and a dining room but the floor plan is open and you can see into each room. There is a fireplace which is usually on when the weather is right. I like the ambience as it is not too fancy and definitely not too casual. Dress code is causal and shorts and a T shirt work as well as dressing up in a suit. read more
