Always up for an adventure this year's girl trip was to Evergreen, Colorado and a day of flying fishing. We signed up with Blue Quill for a day out in Chessman Canyon to hike and learn the basics of fly fishing. It was like all the reviews here say an amazing experience and we all agree we would do it again--kinda hooked on it however, what we want everyone to know is the professionalism of the people who are your guides. Mid-morning across the river we could see that a family was in trouble. Our guides--Chris and Cam--sprinted across the river to provide assistance. A angler was having a diabetic episode. They sprinted back to grab food supplies, check in with us and then back. There's a lot more to this story, a lot more, but the point we want everyone to know is this: when you are out of reach for the day in a situation that could take a turn for the worst you have to trust your guides. I signed up for the Blue Quill's Introduction to Fly Fishing Class based on a friend's recommendation. My goal was to learn enough to be comfortable fly fishing out on my own. The Blue Quill's instructors (Kerry and Michelle) were absolutely FANTASTIC. I didn't really know what to expect from the class, but I can say that Kerry and Michelle were extremely knowledgeable--not only about the sport itself, but about Colorado's rivers and fishing history specific to the state of Colorado. I can say with confidence that I would recommend this class to anybody looking to get into the sport. The class size was small enough that each of us in the class got plenty of 1:1 time with the instructors which was extremely helpful. Not only do you learn at the shop, but they also take you out fishing on Saturday for a full day of practice on the river. Every one of us either caught 1+ fish or at least got some on the line. I was intimidated going into this class, but Kerry and Michelle were completely unassuming, friendly and approachable. They also promise to be a resource for you in the future which is a huge plus. Finally, the shop itself is awesome as well. I'll definitely be purchasing my first fly fishing rig there. I was looking for a new activity to do with my mom during her visit this past weekend and thought of fly fishing. I've done it once and enjoyed it and she was open to the idea. I did some research on Anglers and prices and selected Blue Quill. The owner was really nice when we spoke answer questions and then booking our trip. Our assigned guide called me a few days before to confirm where we would meet and timing. Our guide took us to Deckers (40 minutes SW of Conifer) and after quickly getting our waders on we set out. We were on the water for 4 hours and I caught 4 fish and my mom 1. We both had a very good time and perhaps this is something we'll do again in the future. read more

Took their Introduction to Fly Fishing Class and it exceeded all expectations. We had Kerry Caraghar as our instructor with several other guides helping. They were all patient, informative and willing to take whatever time necessary to ensure that we were competent with the skills that were being taught. We ended up on the river on a Saturday morning and the fishing was great! We all caught fish, but the best part was how all the guides took the time to help make sure we were enjoying the whole experience. Another aspect that we appreciated was Kerry telling us what we NEEDED to buy to catch fish. This sport apparently has no upper limit on what you can spend. What we appreciated was that Kerry told us what the minimum gear was, and that helps immensely as we are now hooked but can ease into this sport without going broke. That night the club had around a hundred folks, if my memory is correct. He spoke for an hour or two about "Fly fishing western tailgaters tactics and patterns for the year round. Pat owns and runs the Blue Quail fly shop in Evergreen CO. The shop evidently runs guiding services well. Pat spoke of being able to "reading the water". And also spoke of a number of different fly patterns and where and the how to use some of the different patterns! One of the best parts, I felt like was the questions and answers sections at the end. We had a number of experienced flyfisherman & flyfisherwomen that asked some really bright questions. Pat has written a number of books covering fly fishing. Warning: The "101 Fly Fishing Class" costs a lot more than $150. On the second night of classroom instruction, you spend 80% of the class time shopping for "necessary" items. The minimum of items that you can buy that they deem "necessary" adds up to $250. This is a back door way for Blue Quill to get a lot more money from you that the advertised cost of the class. They are very hard sell about buying the gear. The second night is also a waste because you do not learn anything -- it is all shopping. They rationalize the practice by saying, we can keep the cost of the class at $150 because you buy basic gear from us. But no one attends the class expecting to pay at a minimum of $250 for the "necessary" gear for ONE day out on the water. Blue Quill should end this sneaky practice and clearly disclose the true cost of the class. read more

Sent inquiry via their contact us app. No reply. Tried again two days later. No reply. Received email on both occasions confirming inquiry receipt!! Finally after a week or so, received email from Jim that nothing received!! Sent my same inquiry back via email that same day. Now, some three weeks later, still have heard nothing. Terrible customer service!!! This site sells Simms waders and such. Would bet that if Simms knew about the lousy service, they would find some other company to represent them on line. Has anyone else out there had similar problems. Three months later. Guess they do no look at their bad reviews and make things right!! Am disappointed that Simms uses them to sell discontinued items. Simms is a top notch company. Have dealt with their customer service and they are the exact opposite of Blue Quill. read more

The Blue Quill is a very well stocked fly shop that has all the gear and advice you need. Jim is very helpful and the overall knowledge of the staff is very high. One time I had very leaky waders and needed to replace them fast. BQ didn't have my size, but Jim loaned me a pair for the weekend while the new ones came in. They are always putting on clinics and having great events at the shop. read more

I have not only been a huge fan of their store and all the great info that they provide anglers, but I have been through several of their classes and on several guided trips. I am always interested in learning new techniques and practices. BQA hits the mark! The first experience I had was Czech Nymphing class that they offered. The guide taught about fly selection, proper rigging, and the basic physics of the drift. The next day we hit the river. Not only did we catch a lot of fish, but any and all questions that I asked were answered in a very professional way. Not only did I learn a lot about nymphing, but I also learned a great deal about site fishing and mending line. A++ trip! The second experience was insane. I wanted to surprise my father with a guided trip. My dad had never fished for trout with a fly rod and we took the nymphing course. We ended up on a section of the North Fork of the South Platte. The guide asked me what my goal for the trip was and I said I just want to see my dad catch a fish and smile. They delivered. They spent extra time getting my dad up to speed for fly fishing for trout. Within three minutes on the river my dad hooked into a beautiful brown. The guides were incredible and very knowledgable. They took some extra time to teach us about flows, drifts, conservation, gear selection, and reading the water. A++ trip! Every experience after has been above my expectations. They do a great job teaching you what you need and making sure that you are properly prepared for a trip on the river. I would recommend this shop for anyone traveling to Colorado to do some fly fishing. read more

The staff at the Blue Quill are awesome. I do several guided trips per year with Pat Dorsey, and he is 1st class, no question about it. He's the second best thing to dynamite when it comes to finding fish. The shop is a full service outfitter and fly tying shop. They have an excellent website to purchase from, and its free shipping if you spend over $5. They carry some high-end equipment, but I can guarantee none of it is overpriced. Their customer service is only when everything is good but not when something is wrong. Spoke to 2 different staff members about heavy black stain on a brand new fly rod handle. One guy said they've always checked before shipping. The other guy said they just shipped the rod out straight out of the manufacturer's box and told me to take the problem straight to manufacturer. They continued blaming the black rod socks would give such stains and the rod that I bought was an introductory rod so the cork quality was only so so; well, now I've heard everything. The rod was Redington's flagship rod and I've bought many rods with black socks without stains. Just beware and make sure that you have some kinds of buyer protection plan with your credit card company. read more

I do a tremendous amount of fly fishing and spend alot of money each year on guided trips with local fly shops. This past fall I decided to book a trip with Blue Quill to Boxwood Gulch near Bailey, Co. My friend and I were told to be at the Conoco in Bailey, Co on the day of the trip at a specific time where we would meet our guide for the day and drive out to the private waters. On the day of the trip we drive the 70 miles to the Conco at the specific time and wait..... and wait... and wait...... The guide never shows up!!!!!! We call Blue Quill but it is Sunday and they are closed. I'm pissed off!!!! Because I know where the Boxwood Gulch ranch is my buddy and I drive out to the ranch to see what is going on. The entrance to the ranch is gated but we are able to get the attention of the ranch owner who is out on his 4 wheeler. Upon speaking with the owner we learn that he had closed all fishing at Boxwood Gulch earlier in the month due to low water flows on the River and high mineral content in the water. This posed a danger to the fish and he did not want people catching them and stressing them. I understood the reasoning. NOW WHY DIDN'T BLUE QUILL CALL US AND TELL US THE TRIP WAS CANCELED!! Granted I was mad but I was willing to give Blue Quill an opportunity to explain what happened and why I wasn't told the trip wouldn't be happening. I called Blue Quill the next week and spoke with the owner Jim Cannon. (remember this is the owner I'm talking to)... I explained the situation to Jim and he explained he had been out of town and would immediately look into the details and get back to me. OR NOT!!!! I guess Jim decided to go stick his head in some sand pile thinking that his business failure to his customer would disappear if he ignored them. Funny how its okay to waste my time and money but he can protect his time and resources with "cancelation" and "no show" policies..... Hey I realize mistakes happen, but what I didn't appreciate and have no tolerance for is guys like Jim who forget who put them in business in the first place and who keeps them there....... read more

Not very happy at all. I know reviews can be subjective, so take from this what you will. I wanted to purchase a new ESN style rod, and after some deliberation decided on a Echo Shadow II. I did shop around (as I have never bought a rod online before,) and after some deliberation (and advice) decided on Blue Quill.The shop had the rod in stock and seemed to have a good reputation, so decision made. I called before buying and asked if i could return the rod if i didn't like it. Now, I know typically return policies on rods can vary and most corner shops will not allow a return after use. However that is why I asked. I am not sure the word "use" implies one specific thing, but I told the rep (Brian) I was going to try it out and would be using the rod in competitions, so I assumed the word "use" implied fishing it. Other online retailers will allow a 30 day return, as we all know the pitfalls of buying something online. Now I was not able to use the rod for a couple weeks due to the bad weather here in MD, but this entire transaction occurred with a 3 week window from purchase to now. To make a long sermon short after I used the rod, I decided it was not for me (used one time) and of course after calling they will not accept the return. The problem I have is the rep I talked to (Brian) was not sure on the return policy at all, and he was the same rep who sold me the rod?! So then the Manager (Cody) get on with a stern unsympathetic voice and informs me they will not accept the return because it was used once to fish. I told him I reaffirmed the use of the rod before purchasing and was then told "nobody in this shop would have said that" Now think about it, nobody Really? Like nobody named Brian who didn't even know what the return policy was? The same Brian who told me I could try out the rod and return it, but failed to clarify what therms of use actually were? To make matters worse I placed the order online after speaking initially speaking with Brian, and told Cody this and the reply was "well how did you talk to someone if you placed the order online?" So obviously an ignorant statement like that immediately implied there was no intention on yielding any ground on the return. No mention of a possible store credit, no mention of maybe a model change (lower weight,) absolutely nothing. All sales are final! Cody also had no problems with me passing on my buying experience. Would I buy something from them again? probably not, but each persons experience will vary. I think Brian had a great attitude and just made a typical retail mistake. But with other online retailers who are larger and have much better return policies (i.e., Leland) I cannot recommend Blue Quill to purchase equipment. So word of caution to all, make sure you know the policies and don't leave anything to chance and make sure you are speaking to someone who actually knows what the policies are. read more

Over the past three months, I have ordered many fly fishing items on line from Blue Quill. On occasion, with reference to these purchases, I have had phone conversations with at least three different guys there about recommendations of the items I was considering. Very knowledgeable, without any push to purchase anything at all, or even purchase the more expensive item. They offer not only good verbal and email responses, but great prices (no taxes and reasonable or free shipping) and quick, responsive, no BS delivery. I had an occasion to check via phone for an on-line purchase and inquire about it's intended delivery and was super impressed with Cory for his handling of the matter. I suggest signing up for their loyalty program -- costs nothing, and points add up for dollars spent. Once you receive a coupon, you have an entire year to use it.
