Started off this morning smoothly! We booked an all-day trout trip and had a great time. Getting everything sorted out paperwork-wise was a breeze and we were on the road quickly. Have fished with Reed Ryan probably a dozen times on the Colorado and the Arkansas. Have also floated the Bighorn, N. Platte, Green & San Juan with recommended guides but have never had as good a guide as Reed. read more

Staff at the store was helpful..... but having an amazing guide like Mitch made the day. He was so patient with us as we learned and never seemed to mind untangling us, which happened often. Update: did this again a year later... disappointing experience. Guides took us to the Blue River in the middle of Breck, which any tourist could walk to in 5 minutes. Not their fault the fish weren't biting but also it's not a great place for beginners with all the pedestrians and bushes/snags around. Beginners in the group felt like guides used a whole lot of jargon without explaining, and got mad when people didn't understand what they were saying. I bought a full day wading trip. Mike Wallace was my guide and he did a great job. The day before I bought my license and ordered the lunch for the next day. Very professional a lot of good information about the next day. Mike worked it hard with, no kidding, 100 different fly combinations. Made a last minute reservation for a guided float down the Colorado River while visiting my sister in Denver for a long weekend. Jack Y was our guide and the trip along with Jack could not have exceeded my expectations more. He was an awesome person to go on a day trip down the river with on top of being an expert angler. My sister was a beginner and he taught her the basics and some tricks very well, enough for her to catch a small rainbow trout before I could catch anything! I ended up catching a ~16" brown trout towards the end, which made the trip that much better, but even just being out there floating was great! Overpriced and very rude. I have been to this shop a number of times and yesterday left an incredibly bad taste in my mouth. We came into the store, we were not greeted and then a man came and helped me and my friend who was super condescending. As a woman in a male dominated sport, I often feel uncomfortable asking for help and I really appreciate people who make me feel welcome. This man was actively trying to make me and my female friend feel stupid, and we are not beginners at this sport. We came in for a recommendation and left with a terrible experience. I will no longer support this fly shop and I'm incredibly disappointed in the way they treat their customers, especially as someone in customer care myself. read more

My friend and I went out with Grant last Friday and not only did she learn from him as a beginner, I learned that I had some bad habits from my previous attempts at fly fishing. Before we knew it we were out on the Blue River and struggling as tin horns but with Grant's guidance it started to feel all right. We both landed a fish, of course my first was bigger but it got away. Grant was chill not bossy and just made the whole experience very pleasurable. He also guided me with my purchase of a rig that did not break the band and was there for the set up of my Temple Fork rod (from Dallas) and Lamson reel. Ryan Wooten took me out on the Eagle River, near Eagle Co, Sunday Jul 18th for a 1/2 day wading trip. It had been a hot week and did get warm that day, so we had to quit a little early, but it was so much fun! Caught a 16" rainbow - a PB for me! Caught a fat little baby rainbow, and hooked another little one who spit it out right at the net. I hooked, for just a second, something else that looked to be even bigger, saw the big belly flash in the water, and that was it. Oh, what can you do!? I learned some more about nymph fishing, a Spey cast, and the click/guide knot that's going to be my go-to from now on. Ryan was awesome. Book an outing with him you will not be disappointed. I stopped in the shop a few times during my stay, and the guys in the shop were just as helpful too. I picked up some flies, and was able to pull a 19" rainbow out of the Blue on a dry during a little rain, and about 10-12" brown on a mercury midge in the shadow under one of the walking bridges. I didn't know about these reviews then, but I've gone out with Cutthroat Angler before (and hope to again in the future). Last time, July 2018, I went out with Matt Weiler, my first time fishing CO, for a 1/2 day wading trip in the Colorado River. I caught 7 browns, the first time catching browns for me, and he caught 2 showing me how to mend line. We stopped off at a place on the way back for some excellent local Jerky. Have a shadow box in my office from that trip. (I'll get one from my outing with Ryan up there soon too.) Cutthroat, can't wait until we hook up again! read more

I have walked out of that shop a couple of times only to feel excluded and defeated for learning a new sport. News flash: fishing is not just for men. I would not get one look, not a single ask if I needed help, or any engaging conversation as many fly shops do when asking (pretty normal and simple to share/answer) questions - those of which, all other local shops happily engage with and answer. It was not until I walked over to check out the Abel rods that someone actually wanted to talk to me. Imagine that - wanting to talk to a female when she has eyes on the "diamond case" at a fly shop. Sigh. I much prefer and highly recommend The Colorado Angler for amazing service as your local fly shop. Too bad, as I am a local and will continue to take guided trips and spend on gear. read more

My husband always wanted to learn to fly fish, so for this birthday I bought us a day with guide. They supply all the gear needed, and a lunch. Our guide Tim taught us the basics in the parking lot where we went to fish, then we were off to the river. What a great experience, we are hooked now!! Campy's Clinic 11/10 Highly recommended!! As a novice trout fisherman, but long time conventional angler I am always looking to learn as much as I can. Earlier this year I had a great experience with Cutthroat Anglers and guide Mitch on a Colorado River float trip. I knew if I had a chance I would try a walk / wade trip. I could not have been happier with my choice. Matt aka "Campy" was the guide for the day. Campy was a great teacher ,spent the morning getting a full-on personal skills clinic. It was great , reinforced the things I did know , and taught me many new tricks and skills. Then we went out and put all our skills to the test on the upper Colorado River. Such a great day to enjoy some sun, and soak up Campys knowledge. I asked him questions about nearly everything and he was more than willing answer with his years of experience. I learned the basics but more importantly with Campy's instruction and encouragement I am building a more solid foundation to incorporate more advanced skills and techniques. I got a few nice brown trout and my first mountain whitefish. ( as a fisherman and scientist that is #785 on my life list) I highly recommend Campy and Cutthroat Anglers, even during these trying times everything was safe, comfortable, and very well managed. I'll tell you what, I've had a lot of fishing guides in my day but my day with my son and Brandon as our guide on the Colorado is at the top of my list We threw hoppers and droppers caught numerous good looking browns had three doubles before the W showed up. With Brandon's expertise and overall knowledge of river history, geology and of course what bug our day was for me one of the best eight hours of guided fishing I've ever had. I had a wonderful experience over the course of three days: 1/2 day lesson, followed by 1/2 day wade with Morgan Long, a full day wade with Grant Chacosky and another full day wade with Matt Campanella. Where do I start? I'm not one to give a lot of reviews. From the start Cory was extremely helpful planning my trip asking me what kind of trip I wanted from wade to floating told him our back ground in fly fishing he said I got you covered. My son is just learning and been on several guiding trips with me and my daughter has never fly fished and I was a bit nervous about it. Cory explained don't worry we go it I said ok don't worry about me I'm an avid fly fisherman just focus on the kids. So day one our guide was Mitch Melichar with me and my son. All I can I say is first class. Mitch is a book of knowledge /patient/funny/ and his focus was to put you on fish and he did just that. My son landed the biggest rainbow (pig) it was. We caught so much fish and lost so much all good. The float was beautiful it rained/soft hailed/and sun came out and got a bit hot. Colorado river was spectacular. Day Two, it was me and my daughter and Mitch again floating the Colorado river. I was a bit nervous actually because she never fly fished before. Before we floated Mitch gave my daughter some fly casting lessons and how to set the hook. Day one was just amazing as day two. My daughter caught and netted a beautiful rainbow and lost the biggest rainbow I've ever seen on a fly, she had lots of hook ups and landed a white fish. I was able to land and net a lot of fish myself ton of browns actually. Couple days later I called back and wanted to fish again Ben the owner hooked me up with Mathew Campanella. Matt is the fish whisper we waded the eagle river. Matt is extremely knowledgeable teaching me how to read the water and how to fish the water before going to the honey hole. He's knowledge on nymphing and line control has made me a confident and better angler. I landed and netted a lot of fish and lost some. I can't wait to go back and fish with Matt again and get some amazing knowledge from him. Cutthroat anglers is first class and highly recommend.I've told all my anglers friends about them. I did a float of the Colorado River with John. I am an experienced angler and John called me ahead of our scheduled trip to find out what my objectives were for the day. I wanted to throw streamers and he taught me how to fish for the pigs with streamers and where to find them. I learned so much and can't wait to get home and try out my new skills. Came in Sunday morning and it will probably be the last time. I respect the stores appreciation for social distancing, but this is probably all that was done right. I was taking friends out for their first time and it was sadly embarrassing with how rude and short the staff was. I know when I come in, this store is a little pricier, but I'm okay with that... that's fly fishing. What I wasn't okay with was the utter lack of respect. Matt "Campy" Campanella was great. I've fished small streams in Pennsylvania for trout, lakes for bass. Regularly costal Atlantic off NC. Been to Alaska and Northern Ontario to fish.
