A mostly fantastic experience. Nice little fly shop. Guides will take you where you want but remember to pay accordingly. The Eagle and Colorado Rivers are optimum choices for this part of the state. If you're feeling a little more adventurous, opt for something toward Flat Tops Wilderness. Closer to Vail, you might try for brookies on the little creeks of the west slope of the Gores. Good service, plenty of quality flies (I don't understand the supposed art of making your own), experienced and knowledgeable staff. Remember to tip well when your adventure ends. read more

A friend booked a trip with her son in July - both new to fly fishing. They arrived to find out they were doing wading trip - current with pretty fast first of July - my 68 yr old friend fell and guide told her to wait, dry out her clothes and they'd be back in 30 min which turned into almost 2 hrs! Our guides took us to private waters were there were no others. Then they spent 4 hours teaching us the basics of fly fishing, staying close by, constantly giving us tips and feedback about our technique and being there for every fish we caught. My wife booked a full day "fun fishing trip"... my goal was to spend some time fly fishing, maybe pick up a few tricks, and catch a few fish. From the beginning of the drive, we were lectured about everything. I don't know if Johnny was having a rough day or month or year, but he yelled and scolded the entire trip. He accused us of breaking "his gear" and not "listening to him"... my wife stopped fishing after he started yelling about "how to land a fish". 2 seconds after yelling in her face he was apologizing. She stopped fishing after that. As this went on, I tried to make the most of our LOST MONEY TRIP, and kept fishing. It was my turn to get yelled at. After an hour of "you can't do anything", we got into a heated discussion which ended in nobody fishing the last hour of the trip. I appreciate that my son had a great day on the River but it was cut short. Our guide called the day prior to advise me that the fishing lesson would be cut short and some funds would be credited to my account since I'd paid for 3/4 days and not 1/2 day. My son enjoyed his lesson, so I tipped the guide $50. I never did receive that refunded money, though. That's the sole reason for 3stars. read more

My family was staying in Beaver Creek and I had an afternoon to get away and do some fishing. It was surprisingly hard to find a tackle shop who would rent equipment. I wasn't looking for a guided trip, I just needed a rod/reel and some waders. Minturn Anglers was the place for me. I basically told them I was completely new to mountain fly fishing and to set me up as if they were going out that day. And for around $100 I had everything I needed for a day of fishing. They had all sorts of equipment and thousands of flies to choose from as well as a knowledgeable staff who knew what was working at any given time. Had a very good experience with a guide through this outfit, but a bad customer service experience. On my guided trip, the guide messed up at the end of the day and offered a half off future trip. Wasn't necessary but I appreciated the offer. About 2 months out of trying to book again I emailed the guide and the shop a few times with no response. Finally I called the shop in minturn and explained the situation and the offer I had received. They explained that guide had left the country and no longer worked there, but the guy promised to call me back that night or the next day regarding the 1/2 off offer to see if they would honor it. I called again the next day with the same response from someone else, and sent 2 emails. Finally called again the day I was driving up to Colorado and told them I need a response because I need to book a trip. Was basically told no they would not honor it, and that was that. I understand not honoring it and that a guide made a promise who no longer works there, but they ignored my questions, emails, and phone calls for over a month, and then told me "sorry not going to do anything" without even asking if I would still like to book with them or maybe even offering a lessar deal which is what I was expecting to happen and hoped for. Again, understand that they could not honor it, but the customer service and not following up to just explain it to me was bad customer service. Need to work on returning phone calls and messages, even if it is bad news. It was upsetting they didn't honor the deal, but it was plain bad service for not letting me know and promising a return call that never came over and over. read more

I ordered a reel that was previously sold out... the very next day i received a call from Justin who was able to recommend me another reel and have it expedited to me... he was more than happy to recommend the gear to me and give his thoughts on any rod/reel and line combo i would inquire about. their knowledge fo the sport is covered in honest enthusiasm. these guys are actual fly fishermen who really love what they do. Months later, the reel i first enquired about became available so i called in again only to find it had already been sold out... We started out the week thinking about fishing as one of our activities for our vacation. We are an avid fishing family, and I have been a fly fishermen for over 30 years. Our local guides in Maryland had no clue who to contact in the Vail area, so we took suggestions from our concierge and Yelp. These guys are every bit as good as reported. I fish all over the world, with some of the worlds best guides, and this is one of the classiest outfits I've ever seen. We fished with Robert Gibbes and Andy ( who said this was his first summer in Colorado as a guide, but you would never know it). They were both very patient, professional, and knowledgable. In very difficult conditions, they put us on fish. We caught our first Colorado cutthroat and had a very good time. They were entertaining, thoughtful, and fun. I would recommend these guys without reservation. We will definitely be back, maybe later this week. They even told us where to fish the rest of the week near our resort! There must be so much water out here that they don't feel threatened telling anglers about their favorite river sections. Went on a 3/4 day trip with Tom Menas and couldn't have been happier. My girlfriend and I were both complete newbies and Tom was a great teacher and very patient. He took us to several great spots. And we even caught three fish! :) Tom is very knowledgeable and it was a real pleasure to be taught by someone who is so passionate about his profession. The equipment was good. Based on other reviews it doesn't appear that their guide services are as bad as their customer service. So...maybe choose to have them guide you, but don't fall for their fake online store. I ordered an extra spool from their online store. I immediately received a confirmation email on my order, but after two weeks and having received nothing, I contacted them. I called and left a message and a day later got an email, explaining that they were in Alaska and missed the order. Apparently their automated email confirmations mean nothing. It's a facade that your order "has been processed." Their solution was to send the spool two-day delivery. I said ok. Three days later I still had nothing. Apparently, their online store is not their inventory at all. In other words, you order a product that they might be able to get for you, but you are not ordering directly from their inventory. In my case, Lamson was out of the product I ordered and Minturn never had the spool available at all. It took a pseudo online inventory, a fake order confirmation, and three weeks time to unveil this scheme. They eventually refunded my money. I received an email that simply said "refunded youre money" - nothing else, not a name, apology, or anything. Too many good, honest fly shops and guide services in the area to waste your time with this dishonest bunch. read more

Best fishing shop I've come across. I'm fairly new to the fly game - as I come from the salt water. But have been in hundreds of shops along the east coast - Minturn Anglers is on a different level. Joe and team have been ridiculously patient in explaining the nuances and basics of the area to me without any condescension. I've been into a bunch of shops - many in the area and often feel like I'm being spoken down to for trying to learn more about the sport. Or, worse - taken for a ride with sub par gear recos. These folks however - will take the time to understand your skill level (with zero judgement) and inform you from there. I've been in nearly every day since I've moved here (with hundreds of questions about a new setup I'd like to buy.) They have taken the time each visit to address my questions and teach me about the rod and reel technology - not once did they try to oversell or even upsell me. They took the time to teach me, offered demos and then let me decide which setup was best for me. Maybe I've been jaded by other retail experiences, but trust me - these folks are above and beyond. They also have a great selection of gear and apparel - Sitka, Patagonia, Scott etc. Their prices are also competitive (if not below) online retailers and below other shops in the area. We sent our 9 year old son out with Mandy and he had such a great time he went back on Saturday! Minturn Anglers were great! They took care of everything from gear, boots, to drinks and snacks. All the staff was friendly and Mandy was great with our son staying close in the rivers to ensure safety. I would recommend their kids day camp to anyone with a kid who loves the outdoors. On Saturday my husband joined our son for his first fly experience. He had a great time and said Mandy knew all the good spots that he and our son could fish and they both caught a fish! I had the opportunity for my first fly fishing experience and, thankfully, did this with Minturn. Our guide was Scott Thompson, who was absolutely top-notch and I cannot recommend him more strongly. I went with my dad last Father's Day weekend. While my dad has been flyfishing for some time, it was my first experience. Scott made it absolutely painless and enjoyable. I had my first fish in within 20 minutes and reeled in 4 more by the end of the day. No exaggeration, I believe my dad caught about 20. Scott took care of every detail and made it awesome. I'm going to keep flyfishing, though it will be difficult to do it without the ease of both Scott's guidance and his overall hospitality. Will definitely be back. read more

I had an awesome experience with these folks last summer, and have been meaning to post about it. The staff were all fantastic. I bought my dad and I a Groupon for the 2 day class. Day 1 was learning about everything you could want to know about fly fishing, and Day 2 being spent fishing on the river. Both days were great! The classroom portion was fun, and taught us so much cool stuff. The 2nd day on the river was unreal. Our guide was Frank Curry, who was awesome. He knew exactly what he was doing, and helped each of us have a truly amazing experience. I actually didn't catch anything, but it didn't take away from the event at all. We had such a good time just learning different tricks and what not, that my dad and I both walked away feeling really good about the day. I would highly recommend these guys. We had an adventurous float trip with a wonderful, personable and talented guide Charley. Unfortunately, after a half hour of perfect weather on the Colorado River, the wind kicked up to a point where Charley spent half his time keeping the boat from spinning against the wind or rowing as hard as possible to make headway even with the river current helping. We caught 3 14-inch browns, a 15-inch rainbow and a small rainbow but had to bypass what was to be the best hole of the trip. Of course, no one can control the wind and our guide called it the worst he's seen this year, adding that if he knew it was going to be that bad he would have cancelled or rescheduled. That was after one cast blew right back into the boat. There was no chance to try any dry flies and we needed extra weight just to get the hopper or beaded flies into the water. It was not the time for my wife to try fly fishing for her first time so she enjoyed watching. The forecast called for winds to 10mph with stronger gusts but we had no idea it would whip down the river valley like it did. Charley stayed cool throughout but I'm pretty sure he didn't enjoy this trip. I'd try Minturn again but with a much more critical eye on the weather by both me and the shop. read more
