Probably all the guides are knowledgeable but I'll go back to Sean if he is there. Lunch was great and the river was swift. Another phenomenal fishing trip with Vail Valley Anglers does not begin to describe our trip! For years, I bring friends to our house in Cordillera to fish each summer. This past week, 8 of us fished in 4 boats for several days with Will Watson, Greg Harvey, Jim Mallos, and Rick King we amazing guides!! we caught over 100 fish per day in the net (another 100 we got close but missed each day). Recently went on roughly my sixth trip with Vail Valley Anglers and specifically guide Shaun Twomey. Had an incredible day of dry fly fishing with Shaun, if you put the fly where he told you there were consistently fish. Shaun is punctual (important in the world of fishing), professional and provides a wealth of knowledge about both fly fishing and the water he guides. Even more importantly both Vail Valley Anglers, and Shaun specifically, aren't just trying to push you on the water whether or not the conditions warrant a trip. For example, I was scheduled to go on a float trip about 3 weeks prior with Shaun and he called it off because of run off that stretched unusually long this year. By doing that it was money out of his pocket but it saved me the time, effort and money for a trip that would have been poor at best due to the river conditions. In short I can't recommend Vail Valley Anglers strongly enough and ask for Shaun, I couldn't imagine a better way to spend the day. read more

Incredible Me and my husband have never ice fished before. I recently had a c-section and was unable to skii on our annual skii trip. My husband found vail valley anglers and suprised me with ice fishing, and it was one of the best experiences. What a wonderful time with Max guiding us this morning on the Eagle River in Avon. From beginning to end, we had an exceptional all-around experience. Max was patient, safety-conscience, and an excellent instructor. We learned so much about the native wildlife and the local ecosystem. Best of all, we caught several fish, including a cutthroat trout, that Max explained was very rare for the area. I would highly recommend Vail Valley Anglers and Max, especially, since our fishing experience was made most special by having such a knowledgable, experienced and patient guide who was determined to ensure we caught fish and left with a better sense of the Eagle River and surrounding area. Keegan and Vail Valley Anglers are TOP NOTCH! I had been fishing Co waters for a couple days and coming up with an empty net. What that tells me is I am doing something wrong. I was a walk in to the shop and requesting a guide trip for that day. 2 phone calls were made and I was set up for a guide trip at 10am. Keegan was on time and ready to get me on some fish. Not only that but he was able to tell me a great location to camp. We got on the water and was immediately on fish. We moved to their private waters and that is when it got REAL! Keegan worked his butt off to be sure I landed the fish I hooked on. Climbing boulders to free my line, talking me through keeping the fish on the line, to wading down stream to crossing the river to free up yet another wrap around a rock, to rushing back to be sure to net the fish for me. He explained what flies we were using and why, to what depth to set the rig. Where we fished is where I camped and I headed out solo the next morning and thanks to Keegan's info I was able to land some nice sized fish solo. So, ya, Keegan is amazing BUT the guys in the shop are equally amazing. I was on a road trip around CO and they gave me suggestions on other fishing locations, other guide shops and other campgrounds. They were spot on at every location, guide shop and campground. Fished with guide Ed Lawn from VVA on a float trip from Carbondale to Glenwood Springs, Sunday 7/10/22. Conditions were good, though the bite was challenging. After an hour or so of no fish seen among our four rafts, Ed tapped his 39 years of experience and made the game day decision to change up our technique in an unconventional way. We were going to use this for only a half hour or so and if it didn't produce, we would change it up again. Needless to say, I caught more fish than anyone in our party and we released many more than several in our party combined! It was a truly memorable day. Ed is the consummate outdoorsman with four decades as a fly fishing guide. His ability to interpret conditions and respond effectively to produce for his clients is exceptional . Everyone can catch fish on a hot bite. When things get tough, Ed's skill set puts him head and shoulders above the crowd. Book Ed Lawn if you want to learn more than you thought you knew, have a great day on the river and release a bunch of beautiful trout. He is as fishy as they come and a gentleman as well. read more

We fished with Jim Mallos of Vail Valley Anglers on 6/18/23. We fished the lower Eagle River from an inflatable drift boat. He is a very knowledgeable, personable and hard working guide. We have fished a lot and with many guides and he was great! We would fish with him again. He was very knowledgeable about this stretch of river and about fly fishing in general. Even at the end of the charter he was fishing hard and did not 'mail it in'. If you are fishing in this area you would do well to use this company and Jim Mallos as a guide! read more

Had an amazing guided full-day wade on the Eagle with Will Watson from Vail Valley Anglers. Conditions were tough. The water was high and a bit off-color but after a slow start to the day Will got me onto fish. He was very deliberate in locating where the fish were and patient with my mending and landing. The tips he provided ensured I caught and brought more fish to net that day and will pay dividends for the future. If you are looking for a guide who really knows the Eagle and has a generous, chill demeanor, I cannot recommend Will Watson enough. We fished the Roaring Fork this time, and have also fished the Colorado with VVA. Will made us feel comfortable and made sure we had a great time, but also taught us a LOT. We ended up pulling in close to 20 fish! (Will even held the fish for me because as much as I like to catch them, it's not my thing to hold them.) Casey challenged the guys in the second boat to throw streamers which resulted in a new skill and some big fish. I also really appreciated the care they took of the fish, ensuring hands were clean for holding them and they didn't spend much time out of the water. I know there are a lot of anglers out there but he deserves to be the number 1 fly fishing guide in the entire area. He has a great personality and is highly requested so please get your reservation in as early as possible. We caught 10 rainbow/brown trout on the Eagle river last week which was June 21 and he helped me step by step as he talked me through each move to make and he was always right. It is easy to find an angler in this area but not to find the best!! I also went Ice Fishing with him on Sylvan Lake last winter which was the best time I have ever done this. I have fly fished in Aspen and this gentle, expert with a great sense of humor offers everything one needs to enjoy your time and to learn is #1 in my humble book. I couldn't find on your site where to leave a review so am using Yelp.com. My friend Tom and I fished 3 days with Keegan Axtell this past week and had one of the best times ever fly fishing. We fished the Colorado, Eagle and Roaring Fork rivers. We caught some 17" to 20" in Browns and Rainbows. I had one on that took me down to the backing. Keegan was great he new the rivers and what flies to use. He had us both dry fly fishing and nymphing. My girlfriend and I stopped by the shop on a whim one day and talked with Brett who was very knowledgeable and friendly. I have always wanted to try fly fishing so we ended up booking a full day float trip for the next week and could not have been more pleased. Our guide James was incredibly knowledgeable and enthusiastic about our first fly fishing experience. James taught us a lot in a short time and we were casting and catching fish before we knew it. His calm, clear, patient and fun teaching style really broke down the mechanics of fishing and made it a breeze to learn a variety of casts and understand the different types of water. We had such a great time on our first trip we have since booked several more with James and Chris Woo; one with my 15 year old nieces. Our favorite trip has been the Colorado River float. The scenery through the canyons are absolutely spectacular. There where bald eagles, big horn sheep and as long as people continue to practice catch and release, plenty of fish. The Eagle float is equally as spectacular, we just felt a bit more "away from it all" on the Colorado. Took my boy on his first float trip for his 13th birthday. Our guide (Marc Barnwell) showed us the time of our lives- 35+ fish on the Colorado River. Mixed bag of browns, bows and cutties- caught on dries, nymphs and streamers. Marc knew the river like the back of his hand- had us rigged and positioned for every riffle and hole on the water. What an AMAZING company! Our group used Vail Valley Anglers during our incentive trip and boy did they deliver! Each couple got their own private guide and were taken to different parts of the river.
