I just went in here looking for some help getting started with lake fishing not knowing they are primarily a fly fishing spot. I was lucky enough to sit down and get a full run down of what I'd need, the best places to find fishing spots, where I can go to find certain gear, and what to do once I have it! An awesome family run business who are clearly passionate about what they do and supportive of people getting into fishing. It would have been easy to say they didn't have what I was looking for and call it a day, but they took the time out of their day to help me feel welcome and teach me what I needed to know. A fly tyer's paradise owned and operated by fly tying expert and author Charlie Craven himself! Charlie was there today and was more than happy to advise us on selecting flies for the specific lake we'll be venturing to tomorrow. Tying supplies are in abundance at this beautiful store, as is a wide select of all other gear you may need. While this store is a bit pricey, it is easy to see why this shop is a favorite among discerning Colorado anglers. Staff is extremely helpful, gear is top notch, the location is convenient if you're bound for the high country, and a number of classes are available. My only lament is the lack of women's gear, but this is a problem in the fly fishing industry in general! read more

Stopped by the shop last week in July (2019) during a long weekend visit from Phoenix. Haven't fished in 35 years since abandoning Wisconsin for the Sonoran Desert, forgot everything I never knew anyway, getting back into it and started following Mr. Craven's "Fly Tier's Bench" articles in Fly Fisherman magazine. Wonderful shop, customer friendly and beyond knowledgeable. Mr. Dave Cook did happily up-sell me on a DYNA-KING Pro vise from the $150 vise I was considering - for which I gratefully thank him. What a vise. It speaks seven or eight languages and ties by itself while I drink coffee and listen to Joe Bonamassa. I'm now a long distance mail-order customer from Phoenix most of the time, but highly recommend this shop for anyone interested in professional advice and quality products. We stopped in here the other day looking for some fishing gear. They didn't have exactly what I was looking for, but were really helpful all around. They've got a really cool store and have a large selection of most gear. We were greeted promptly. My only gripe about this place are the prices. They're expensive. You can find the exact same gear for less at other stores, but you can't find the same selection. They've got a really nice selection of nets here as well if you're looking for one of those. We didn't have a ton of time to stick around and shop, but we'll definitely be back in the future. Cool place! read more

Probably the best Fly shop in Denver. I have known and worked with Charlie for over 20 years. His shop is exactly what he always said every shop should be like. Comfortable, very well supplied(never out of black 6/0 thread or 9ft 5x leaders and tippet) and have a knowledgeable staff. Charlie is the best yet in the world and more importantly the best teacher. I had taken three classes before I took his and his class changed my approach and gave me an ability to tie anything I wanted to. Simply the best all around. Well it doesn't matter to the owner/ staff at Charlies Fly Box, because either way you'll be treated like a scum. If you know what you want they'll make you feel stupid for wanting it. If you are looking for advice they'll mock you for being inexperienced. The fly's are well made and their prices reflect that fact. All of the other products in the store can be purchased online or at other retailers for a fraction of the price (one fly tool at Charlies $12.95, Sportsman had the SAME TOOL $2.95) If you want to be treated like a bother for making the owner turn away from his computer to help you. And you like to pay too much money for everything, stop in to Charlies and prepare to feel like less of a person. read more

This place is up there as the best in Denver. Anytime I need advice or ideas when it comes to the tying bench, I go here. All of the staff are great and willing to help out. Both Greg and Charlie are full of knowledge and tricks. I try to pick their brains when I can. The shop has a great inventory of gear, carrying all of the major brands. The fly selection is pretty good as well. The primary reason I head here is for the tying materials. This is the most robust selection of materials I have ever seen. More times than not I head in with a list, and leave with far more than I need. I love the selection! read more

Great shop, huge selection but must have caught the employee on a bad day. I went in on a slow Thursday morning to purchase some Rio fly line. When I walked in I was greeted by the employee who was chatting it up with a guy who was on his lunch break. I scoped out the fly line until he acknowledged me again, then I told him what I was looking for, which he had of course (huge selection). I then asked if he could spool it up for me ($90 fly line). His friend said he was gonna head out and he looked annoyed and started spooling for me on their machine. While waiting I thought I'd chat it up with him about my upcoming trip to see if he had any suggestions. I asked specifically about trout and a few bodies of water I was considering. He answered all of my questions with a sharp "If I were you I'd go for carp". Cool, how about trout? It's gonna be a busy weekend, I'd go for carp. No help at all, oh well. He seemed annoyed that I drove off his friend with my presence so I decided to wander the shop and get some flies. I decided not to bother him with fly suggestions and filled my own container. He set me up, I purchased some flies and a few strike indicators. On my way out the door I noticed the Smith sunglass stand with a pair of sunglasses I have been considering. I stood there in plain sight of the employee for about 5 minutes while he sat on the computer. Not once did he acknowledge me or ask if I wanted to see anything. I didn't want to inconvenience him again, so I left........ keep in mind I was the ONLY person in the store the whole time. Must have been something really cool going down in internet land. Other than that one experience, it is a great shop. I have bad days too and am chalking it up to him being grumpy because he was at work and not on the water. Fair enough. read more

Disappointed. I have been shopping at Charlie's for years, actually the first true Fly shop I have ever stepped foot in. In just the last year I have spent close to $1000 there. My wife got me a gift card for Charlie's for Christmas because fishing gear is all that I ever ask for. Her car was broken into and her purse along with the gift card was stolen. She called and spoke with Dave who said Charlie would call when he got in which never happened. She called back and Charlie answered, He didn't care in the slightest about helping her. She asked if he could void the gift certificate and issue a new one but apparently they don't have the capability to do that. He then said he didn't want to be out of the $100 that the gift card was for and didn't want to check Id's of people using the gift certificates which they hand print who they are for on every one of them. I don't really care about the $100, honestly that's about enough to buy a small Handful of flies in that place. It's the way he treated her on a really tough day for her. I have Lots if Fishing buddies who shop here fairly frequently and I will be telling them about my experience. If you like overpriced gear and pathetic customer service this is the place for you! read more
