This spot is a true hidden gem with such a cute, welcoming vibe as soon as you walk in. We were greeted by Shelly, who was also our waitress, and her customer service was amazing--super attentive and detail-oriented without being overbearing. We started with a lemon drop martini, which was fantastic. Then came the Hot Crab Dip... and wow. Hands down the BEST crab dip I've ever had. Big, perfectly seasoned chunks of crab with a rich, buttery, melt-in-your-mouth texture--absolutely worth the hype. The Cajun deviled eggs were just okay flavor-wise, but the presentation was beautiful. For our mains, we tried the blackened redfish special topped with crawfish sauce over potatoes--so flavorful--and a basket of fried oysters with fries. The fries were fresh, thick-cut potatoes fried to perfection, which I always appreciate. For dessert, we had the bread pudding with banana rum, and OMG... so delicious. We also tried the beignets--definitely recommend eating those fresh and hot instead of taking them to go. They also offer brunch, so I'll definitely be back to try more. Went with a party of 6 and was seated immediately. Someone in our party has been before and swore how good the food was, but with a quick glance at my phone and the reviews on Yelp, I was pretty pessimistic about what I was going to find here. I ordered the Catfish BLT PoBoy, and wow, was it good! I didn't dissect the contents as another reviewer did to try each element individually, but as a whole, I really enjoyed this sandwich. As a matter of fact, I have catfish in the freezer now that I bought JUST to mimic this sandwich at home! The rest of the table really enjoyed their meals. Many had the soup / sandwich combos and they raved about what they had. My Father-in-law still talks about how the soup was some of the best he ever had. Where they lost a star was their service. They did have 4 other tables sat at the time, but once the order was placed, it was hard to find our server to get refills or even the check. This was my sister and brother in laws idea. Really not a bad hole in the wall. Quality was on par and one can pick up a drink. Ok, on the negative, some of the most delicious looking items are only provided for dinner or on Friday/saturaday. That being said, if you want a nice half a po boy and some good soup for chill prices, this is for you. I wanted to try their muffalotta or soft shell crab but only so much at one sitting. The corn and crawfish soup had some nice meaty bits, though one must like an onion hint with each bite. There seems to be some nights with some tunes and shrimp specials which might be cool. I can't comment on these 1-star experiences people seem to be having, but personally, I think food this good deserves at least 3 or 4 stars minimum. I had the seafood gumbo which blew my mind. Fried oysters, sausage, crab, chicken, shrimp, scallops... I might be forgetting some things... Now I'm just a northerner that doesn't know much about Cajun food, but I am a verified fatty and my expertise in this arena tells me that this is top notch eating. And they don't skimp you on the portion either. As for the service, I not only had great service but great company. I did cozy up to their small bar and planted myself among the employees however. The music, provided by one very talented man, was top notch. I can't imagine why the place wasn't filled with more people looking to grub. Might be location or might be something else, but if I ever become a local, this place will definitely become one of my go-to's. My word- it was GOOD! We found this place on Yelp, on the way to the beach, and really, on your way to the beach, almost nothing is bad :). But this little hole in the wall exceeded expectations and was delish! Po-boy catfish sandwich - perfectly fried without a bunch of heavy crust and the bread was fresh and just crispy enough for the po boy. The she crab soup was well seasoned, thick and plenty of she crab. The piece de resistance was dessert - beignets that were the best I've ever had! Hot, dusted in confectioners sugar, with a pillowy outside and a soft sweet center. We were fighting over who got the last bite. Nice service and the signs on the wall were hilarious. This has become my favorite restaurant in Dothan. It looks like a dive, but the food is off the chain! I generally don't care for fried food because there is usually more batter than seafood. Here, there is a light dusting of what I think is fine ground corn meal for just a bit of crunch. The tomato grits are the most amazing! They seem to go with everything. This is a great local hole in the wall. I had the shrimp remoulade, half a buffalo shrimp po boy, and fried green beans. Everything was great. they don't serve beer in house, but you can go to the bar next door for one and bring it back. I would definitely come back and try the fried green tomato po boy, or the fried egg plant BLT. We were there late, and the chef came out after our meal and asked us how we liked our meals and thanked us for coming. I LOVE a good "hole in the wall with great food", and Blue Moon definitely fits the bill! Our party of four shared two appetizers--Boudin balls and tuna dip, and they were both exceptional. We each had different entrees--grouper, shrimp, crab cakes--and ALL were SO good! It's a laid back atmosphere with great, personal service. Who knew this little hole in the wall would house a generous slice of New Orleans flavor? The intimate setting was complete with a bayou mural and kitsch covered walls, and the kind of porch lights that make you feel like you're at a craw dad broil on someone's back porch. I had the special, a creamy seafood dish with just the right amount of heat topped on a generous portion of angel hair spaghetti. I was in hog heaven!! My dining companions were equally pleased with their choices, including a whopping bowl of jambalaya and an oyster poboy, all at a very reasonable price. Get the house grits!!! I am not a fan of grits but it had to be one of the best things I have ever tasted. I also had the Parmesan Crusted Grouper and it was excellent also. They do have their liquor license now, but they are still working on getting a good set up. Great atmosphere! The staff is very helpful and courteous. And then, the waitress was so rude that she had the audacity to talk crap about my husband and me to another table next to us, simply because we asked for the check. Regardless of how busy a restaurant is, performing the basic duties of a server upon request should not invoke such bad attitude and poor class. There are about 12 tables; a few of which seat more than 4. My boyfriend & I were lucky enough to stumble upon this gem of a place on a Thursday night when The John Weaver Show was playing. I suggest you all take the time to look up his schedule & dine here when this magical 78 year old is playing! He can play the saxophone & watch the football game at the same time! Worth mentioning is that one lady was working the front of the store. She was attentive & kind. Our drinks were never empty & our table was kept clean. She explained the menu to us & suggested not only food to eat here but other restaurants in the area she thought we'd enjoy. Even the chef made an appearance, he was sociable & welcoming. While the people & service were exceptional the food was just as great. We ordered the boudin bites which we've never had before & were impressed by. The crunchy texture mixed with the spicy pork & rice is perfectly paired with remoulade & you can not leave before trying them. For our 'entrées' we shared a buffalo shrimp po boy, because we are basic, & a cup of the she crab soup. My only suggestion is to not serve the sandwiches with chip crumbs. Maybe switch it out with 3 bites or the sweet potato fries? Even the potato chips would have impressed me. Hell I'd have taken a pickle! We ended our meal trying the beignets because why not eat more fried food! Honesty, I'm sure one can not go wrong with the food they order here. The ambiance is really neat at this place. It looks like a dive bar, but that's part of the theme of the restaurant. I love the bayou wall mural, the kitschy decor, and cajun music. The food isn't great, but still pretty darn good especially for the price. My friend ordered the half soup half po'boy sandwich. His soup was the crawfish and corn chowder, and the catfish BLT po'boy. The catfish by itself was a bit bland, but with the sandwich as whole, very good. I had the cajun chicken pasta which is their spin on chicken alfredo. I was pleasantly surprised at how delicious it was; creamy, flavorful, and packs a spicy kick. I'll most likely order it again next time. We'd been here twice already. The first time I ordered a muffaletta which was just OK, but I think its because it was so olive-y. I like olives as an accompaniment than as the main event. As for the service, our server was nice and friendly, though I was on the fence between a couple items and wish she'd have given me more guidance. Blue Moon was on my list of places to try so we decided to go last night. It is a Cajun/creole restaurant on South Foster. When we walked in, I immediately loved the atmosphere. I have been to New Orleans several times and this little place definitely took me back. There was a gentleman playing the guitar and singing in the corner (Jimmy Buffet, Eagles, etc.) and he was actually not bad for a little whole in wall. I ordered the Fried Oyster Po' boy and my boyfriend ordered the jambalaya. My sandwich was delicious and the portion was huge. My boyfriend's jambalaya was nothing like the menu described. It was a bowl of overcooked rice with a tiny piece of chicken. We have never sent anything back, but we sent this back. The waitress was very sweet and apologetic and offered to bring something else, but we decided to split my sandwich instead. I would definitely recommend you try this little restaurant because my sandwich was great and I loved the atmosphere. From other reviews, there are some really good things on the menu. First I'll start with the positive: interesting decor, friendly server, menu that is different from most places. What is not too good at the Blue Moon Cafe is, unfortunately, the food. My husband is from Louisiana and makes gumbo and etoufee that is awesome so maybe I am spoiled. We ordered the lunch combo where you can get half a po' boy and a cup of soup. We both ordered the shrimp po' boy. My husband got the shrimp etoufee and I had the chicken and sausage gumbo. We enjoyed the po' boys. They are different than any I've had before because they have cabbage instead of lettuce. I wasn't expecting to like that when I saw it, but it was a tasty surprise. However, the gumbo was a disappointment. Now I am all for heat when it comes with flavor, but just heat for the sake of heat is not good. The gumbo was so spicy but other than that, there was no flavor. I don't think the roux was seasoned at all. It was too thick for my liking, and the celery in the gumbo was crunchy. My husband ordered the shrimp etoufee. I had a bite of that, and that too was bland. The shrimp were overcooked and the vegetables were crunchy. I so wanted to like this place- we both did. We had just gotten back from Louisiana the day before when we discovered the Blue Moon Cafe and we thought we had found something special. The menu was very short for a Cajun joint. I had cup of gumbo, and the bayou burger. The burger tasted like a breakfast sausage patty, but it wasn't that bad. The gumbo was a little overpowering, but I would eat it again. The atmosphere was very chill with a guy playing his guitar in the corner. Had the catfish po boy today and it was amazingly great. The fish was tender and crispy, not greasy or heavy. The atmosphere is funky, very NOLA. The sweet tea was as it should be. I tried. I really did. My husband and I met up with our friends on a Friday they were about half full maybe 5 tables seated I'll keep this simple. Sat down at 6:45pm. Waitress finally arrived at 7. Ordered drinks and food. Food arrived at 8:15 (never brought out the sides we requested). Drinks arrived at 8:40 - yes. AFTER the food. Asked for checks at 8:40. Checks arrived at 9 but none belonged to us. Waitress goes back to figure it out, instead talks to a friend. Correct check finally comes around 9:20 Takes another 25 minutes to get our cards back. The family behind us never got their food and was there since 7 as well. They were livid. We all were pissed. The manager didn't seem to care. Judging by our experience, the inept staff, and some really pathetic looking dishes around us , I'll go out on a limb and say that the people who run this place JUST DON'T CARE read more

Blue Moon is one of the only places I have been here that actually has personality and a unique identity and atmosphere. For that, I really enjoyed the place. Our server was sweet, attentive, and accommodating. I dig that you can byob or get your booze from the place next door. I was tipped off that this lunch restaurant does dinner on Friday nights and thought it would be a good night out. The place is Creole/Cajun - reflected in the menu and décor - and unfortunately the HEAT. It was uncomfortably hot in the place so we chose to eat on the back patio (which is shared with the bar next door). The food didn't quite live up to expectations - we had crawfish& crab fettuccini and Cajun chicken pasta. The recipes were a little bland (not so spicy) and a little boring. We have lived in the area for about 3 years and I have always been curious about this place, so we decided to check it out. We went on a Saturday evening and weren't exactly sure where to sit when we arrived. We figured out that it was a "seat yourself" kind of place and waited about 15 minutes for the server to come over. She was very friendly and apologetic, but clearly overwhelmed by a half full dining area and more people out back. She seemed to be the only front of house person they had working at the moment. Anyway, she brought some menus and I decided on the special, which was the captain's platter. Something about pan-seared grouper, fried shrimp, oysters, onion rings and green tomatoes sounded good, but wasn't executed quite how I imagined. They advertised it with a remoulade sauce, which was kind of just plopped around the plate. Also, their version of pan-seared and mine must be different, since their grouper was absolutely breaded and pan-fried. It was too much "blah" and not the "wow" I had hoped for. The platter was reminiscent of a greasy basket from a run of the mill seafood chain. It was advertised to come with salad and bread, neither of which I received. I was told that they're "probably out of salad". Oh well. My other half had the double decker BLT and they used the "ready made" bacon from a box. What's the point of offering a BLT if you don't even use fresh bacon? All in all, the place probably has potential but I wouldn't waste $24.95 on a special again or come back for dinner. Horrible Valentines Day Dinner. Did not get our salad and they did not subtract from the bill. Had reservations for 7:30 and didn't get food until 9:30. Waaaaaaaaaaaaaay over priced, $45.95 per person for a steak, 3oz lobster tail and 2 rolls. Drinks were extra. Our bill for 2 people was over $120. We will never go back!!!!!!! or recommend. One of my favorite places to go for lunch. I usually get 1/2 shrimp po-boy and a cup of red beans and rice. The bread on the po-boy is sooo good, topped with delicious fried shrimp, slaw, and remoulade sauce. The red beans and rice is warm and filling, with chunks of sausage in it. My only complaint about Blue Moon is that when you order soda you get exactly one can of soda. I drink a lot while I eat, so now I make a point to get tea when we go there. read more

I was surprised at the numerous options served at Blue Moon. I almost stopped at the door, but I'm glad I kept going. The atmosphere was quaint and pleasant. The inside seating was filled with southern paraphernalia. I thought it was nostalgic and a good atmosphere for the cuisine. There was even a romantic patio area with outdoor seating, if that's more to your liking. Our server was not the most knowledgeable about some of the Louisianan delicacies, but she got the job done, and was very accommodating. I ordered an eggplant po'boy without the bacon, and sweet potato fries. The fries were not to big, and perfectly crunchy on the outside while still moist on the inside. Nothing tasted packaged or sloppily made. Everything was fresh and flavorful. Finally, the beignets were sublime. The Blue Moon Cafe is an amazing find, especially for a vegetarian comfort-food lover. Not your average southern food restaurant, and I mean that as a compliment. My wife and I had lunch there today, we started with the She Crab Soup, the only relation this had to She Crab soup was the color, the taste was too tart, there was no crab and I think too much Sasafrass, either way it was not good. We then each had the Shrimp Efutee, and this was very different from any we have had in New Orleans, this was a soup, with balls of rice, and shrimp so few and small, these were smaller than pop corn shrimp, if that is possible, no relation to anythiing you would have in New Orleans. There is no draft beer, the sodas come in cans, and the only refills are on tea and lemonade. Hopefully dinner is better, but I tend to judge a business on how well it does the standards. Blue Moon fails in my estimation. read more
