My parents love Nate's as it is one of their favorite places for seafood. However, I am not a seafood eater but I found myself impressed with Nate's non-seafood offerings. Let's start with the most impressive. My cousin ordered a ribeye sandwich. He might as well have ordered a whole ribeye just on a piece of bread because that is what he got! That will be what I order next time at Nate's! I ordered Nate's Hot Dog as it was already mid-afternoon and we were going to eat again in a few hours. This was the most delicious hot dog I've had in a while. The chili was thick and rich! The slaw made it a tangy treat! I chose the salad bar as my side and it is what you would expect from an old school salad bar with a few veggie choices, Captain Wafers, and some salad dressings. My stepson got the burger and the burger looked fantastic and humongous! He doesn't usually brag on things unless it was really good and he could not stop talking about it. My wife wasn't happy with hers though. She said her BLT had no mayo and she did not like the corn nuggets. My sweet tea was refreshingly sweet! The decor is something to behold as it has bits and pieces of Slocomb's history on the walls as well as TVs. Another visit to Nate's will be in my future! read more

Absolute best taste and value. Some will complain about the wait time when crowded but dishes are cooked fresh as ordered. Grilled salmon sandwiches and ribeye sandwiches are my favorites. Just order , you will be surprised. Better yet don't come just take my word for it then it won't be so crowded I have to go eat my favorite Mexican food. Too many things to list.......rude staff, no one wearing hairnets, took two bags of garbage out the FRONT door, my fish wasn't done AND had a hair in it. Nates is hot and sweaty buzzing with flies and rude staff and they didnt even have the food that was on the menu! No oysters, no ribeyes, no chicken we were like what? I always love going to Nate's even if it is a 20 minute drive because I live in Dothan. They have the best blackened grouper nuggets in this world!! They are never dry and your plate is always overflowing with so much food that I can never finish but don't let it go to waste.... Make sure you take leftovers home with you because it is just as good the next day. Their cheese curds and sweet potatoes are the best I can find around as well. My son loves their fried shrimp and ribeye!! People always complain about the wait time there but I promise you IT IS ALWAYS worth the wait. I always go there with the expectations of having a long wait because their food is so darn good and affordable. I don't know if the kitchen ran out of seasoning or what, but this was not it. Their food taste like catfish by Gerber Baby. After the first bite, my face involuntarily made a sad fish face. The onion rings might as well have just been onions. But the worst part, the worst part was how that massacred my boy the Hush Puppies. These had soggy centers with unnecessary ingredients for crunchy texture. 10 out of 10 would not recommend. God only know what a raw oyster from there would do to you. read more

I had a really bad experience with this place over a year ago but I wanted to go back to see if maybe it was just an "off" night bc this place stays packed. Always packed and I honestly have no idea why aside for maybe small town atmosphere and limited places to eat. Both times I've been here the food is not seasoned at all...like doesn't even taste like salt or pepper were even used at all. My son had the burger and fries tonight and I had the shrimp with onion rings..two things I've never seen messed up until now. Both were flavorless. I won't ever be back. I actually made a conscious decision to let some time pass before posting a review on our dining experience at Nate's Oyster Bar, just to see if I still felt as disappointed after the initial frustration had passed from visiting this establishment. I can now say with the upmost certainty that while the food didn't taste that bad. I would not recommend this establishment to anyone who is not a regular local customer who frequents this place. We were in town for the annual Slocomb tomato festival, with a party of five and it took us almost 2 hours to get our meals served. I watched numerous people who arrived after us get their food before we did, all of whom seemed to know and be joking with the staff. Needless to say I will not be going back any time in the near future, nor would I recommend this as a dining experience/nightmare for anyone else. read more

So we was a party of 5 Wanted to eat oysters since it is a OYSTER BAR was told no raw oysters and baked. None Then ordered fried chicken salad, fried shrimp salad and grilled salmon salad. Blackened Shrimp baskets, corn nuggets, cheese curds and fried onions. After waiting for 1 hour for the food we asked where it was and all of a sudden we get cheese curds and the two blackened shrimp and fried onion rings. After another 30 min we finally got the rest of the food. Wow! Food was so amazing we got the seafood platter and yum! We live down i On 30A on the beach eat seafood all the time. Even pay WAY more for WAY Less. They have a wonderful salad bar so fresh. Decided to try something different this weekend, took a drive to Slocomb after hearing about this place from a few friends. I have to say I was very pleased. The shrimp were fresh, jumbo and bartered with a light batter and fried perfectly. I had the baked potato and salad. The dressings and croutons, cocktail and tarter sauces were all homemade and very tasty. We also had the crab claws, they were also fresh and perfectly fried. I could have sworn I was in a dive restaurant on the coast. The staff were all super nice and attentive. Definitely a small town restaurant but to be honest that makes it even better. The last time I went here, it was SO good! Omg! The fish was SO fresh! I had grilled grouper and it was amazing!! This place doesn't have the greatest atmosphere, but that's part of the charm. nate's is a convenient place to eat with good food. however this is the second time i have got this one waitress who is extremely rude. today she clapped her hands and said chop chop to us getting seated bc we "were not moving fast enough". She is coming around to take orders and she snatches paper from my boyfriends hand and slams it on the table and says "son you are driving me crazy". she is a older looking lady who wears a little bun on top of her head. The first time i had her i asked for sauce and she pointed at the bar and rolled her eyes. My mom then asks for straws and she looks at mom and then looks at her apron and says "maybe if i had some". I looked at the reviews after eating here a couple times. I love this place. I have ate oysters at several places in the panhandle and they are right there with the places on the gulf as far as taste and quality. The best part is that they are much cheaper. To the people that had a long wait, that's possible during a possibly very busy time. I have not experienced that at all. The service was always amazing and the wait was not at all long. Not sure where to start. It's a country bar type atmosphere. It's one of the only places to eat in slocomb, al. Have been there a Few Times at lunch. I don't judge my first time I usually go a few times before I make my decision to go back or not. I usually get something quick like a hot dog and fries or sandwich. It's awkward to look at. I mean the waitresses are ok. Not great. The hotdogs are good my husband didn't care for their oysters that much. Honestly it's kinda dirty looking. Don't understand how they haven't had some bad grades from the health man. For such a big building it has so much potential. sadly I think it's the management. Seems like their is always a man and woman or some babies back there don't know if it's the owner or what. He never smiles....I have been a few times. And the thing I noticed most is that no one is ever smiling., when I dine in a restaurant I expect to see at least One smiling face. The only man I saw smiling was the nice man washing dishes. They seem to always be out of something. I'm a watcher so I watch people and they are always apologizing for being out of something.. So with that being said it's a large place with no matching chairs or tables no smiling faces and appears dirty... food isn't that great. At least not what I have tried. I really don't know what planet these other people come from. Nate's is awesome. The Ribeye is a bigger cut than you will find at most other restaurants and is always cooked well with an excellent flavor. I had the Captain's platter last time. It was excellent with huge shrimp. Oysters are always fresh and as good as Apalachicola or Cedar Key can provide. Price is LESS than anywhere I have found in Florida. Always quick, friendly service in a clean, quaint, small town atmosphere. All foods are prepared fresh and practically in front of you. Owner is present and oversees that it is done properly. Do not trust menu prices found online! Dozen raw oysters were market price which were 11.99. The fried crawfish tails were awesome and only 5.99. My husband and mother in law said the oysters were great fried and raw. Charming decor inside and service was on point. Would visit again. read more

Some of the best seafood you'll get in the area but there's burgers and such also. Lots of fried (you are in rural south Alabama...) but plenty of grilled choices as well. Looks like an old warehouse from the outside but nice and clean inside with lots of TV's for somewhat of a sports bar atmosphere but with big dining room style tables and chairs to give a feel like you're eating at home. The food is cooked in the same room as you eat which takes away any worries of an unclean kitchen or cook and I've always felt it's plenty of food for the money. It's usually the owner cooking; this is 100% a local family run business and they really seem like they care the times I've talked to them. I moved to Slocomb almost a year ago. I had driven by the place several times and seen the sign outside and thought it was just an "oyster" bar, and though I do love oysters, I never went in there. Robert is right about one thing, it is a metal building converted to a small town eating place, there are a couple of tables out front under the awning and I had noticed several what I figured was hometown folks sitting out there conversing together so I basically thought it was a meet and greet place for the guys to go to eat oysters and hang out. But then a friend of mine was telling me that a lady at work told him that her and her husband go there to eat quite a bit and she had wonderful things to say about the place. I figured it was worth a try since she works in Defuniak Springs Fl., lives in Samson Al., and drives to Slocomb just to eat there. So about 4 months ago, I tried it. I walked in and was shocked at what I saw. It was actually a really nice and very clean little restaurant. I would have never thought looking from the outside that it was so nice on the inside. I ordered the fried shrimp, corn nuggets and salad and my son got a roast beef sandwich that came on a Hoagie bun with gravy and melted cheese. They called it the "Nasty Nate". The reason they call it that is because it was so stacked with roast beef and gravy that if you didn't eat it with a fork, you would get it all over you :) My son is 15 years old and like most growing teenagers it takes a lot to fill him up and he usually cleans his plate. He almost wasn't able to eat all of it but he did, however, he wasn't able to clean his plate cause he had no room for the rest of his fries. Coming from a boy who loves Subway, he told me that Subway had nothing on that sandwich and Nate's became his new favorite place to eat. As for my shrimp and the corn nuggets...it was amazing. The shrimp are the jumbo shrimp and the are coated, seasoned and fried just right. The corn nuggets were sweet and golden and not over cooked. Many years ago I worked at one of the two most popular seafood placed to eat in Graceville Florida and I thought they had the best shrimp I had ever tasted. I am sorry, but Nate's might have them beat just a tad. Since my first visit to Nate's, I have told a few people about it. I met a couple of my girl friend's from work over there to eat and they too had the best things to say about it. One got the "Nasty Nate" and one got the stuffed shrimp and they loved it. I also invited my mom and aunt out to eat at Nate's. They ordered the steak and both raved that it was the best steak they had ever eaten. It was seasoned just right and cooked just the way they wanted it. The prices are really not much different than anywhere else. It is moderately priced, you get plenty of food and the food is awesome. I highly recommend Nate's. But remember, you can get on here and read a negative review and then read a positive one and if 30 more people follow behind me with a review it will be the same thing...some good, some bad. We are all different, have different taste and different expectations on what we want. The only thing I can tell you is to go try it out. What have you got to lose?
